Scot Walker finishes third

YOUNGEST EVER WINNER (16)BOF

BRABAZON TROPHY

Yorkshire 16-year-old Ben Schmidt became the youngest-ever winner of the Brabazon Trophy today, finishing on 13-under par and winning by five shots at Alwoodley Golf Club, Leeds.
Schmidt pips major winners Sandy Lyle
and Charl Schwartzel who were ]
respectively 17 and 18 when they won
the English Men’s Open Amateur Stroke Play - one of the most sought-after titles in international men's amateur golf
“Being the youngest makes it even more special,” said Schmidt, who was under par in all four rounds of the championship, scoring 69 64 69 69.
“I’m just so pleased I got over the line, it takes a very long time to play the back nine when you’re in the lead!”
The teenager, from Rotherham Golf Club, is the second successive Yorkshire player to win the Brabazon, following Nick Poppleton’s success in 2018 – and the third in the last four years.
Schmidt, who was cheered by the large crowd of spectators as he signed off with a par on the 18th, said: “This means so much. It’s nice to keep it in Yorkshire and it was awesome to see so many supporters, friends and family.
“I’m just so glad I managed to keep the lead from day two, that’s probably been the toughest part, but I got it done and it’s just amazing!”
This was Schmidt’s first appearance in the Brabazon and he took advantage of an exemption gained when he won the 2018 English Boys’ County Champion of Champions tournament.
His first goal was to make the cut and he did that in style, taking the lead after the second round when he shot seven-under 64. He held on to the lead after round three, but it was cut to one shot when Cornwall’s Harry Hall set a new course record 63.
The two players were paired together for the final round with Schmidt setting out 11-under par and Hall (West Cornwall) 10-under.
Hall, 21, made a blistering start, with two birdies in the first three holes to overtake Schmidt. But the teenager took the lead again when he holed a 25-footer for birdie on the fifth, while his rival bogeyed the hole.
The players were back on level terms after Schmidt bogeyed the short ninth with an uncharacteristic three-putt. But that was his last mistake. He played the difficult back nine in two-under par, while Hall dropped three shots over the closing holes.
The youngster had a four-shot cushion as he played the last and his winning margin was extended when Hall’s par putt horseshoed out of the hole.
“I played the back nine really well,” said Schmidt. “Those last five or six holes are really tough and I didn’t do any damage, I hit the centre of the greens and gave myself chances with the putts.”
Schmidt, a member of the England boys' squad, also won the George Henriques Salver awarded to the leading GB and I player aged under 20.
Hall was championship runner-up on eight-under par, while Scotland’s Euan Walker was third on seven-under after a closing 66.

SCOT FERGUSON FINISHES CREDITABLE THIRD

GUIDO THE GRET CHALKS UP

FOUR-STROKE VICTORY IN

BELGIAN KNOCK-OUT

Guido Migliozzi claimed his second European Tour win of the season with a four shot victory over Darius van Driel in the final of the Belgian Knockout.

The Italian only came through the Qualifying School in November and now has two victories in just 20 events after his triumph at the Magical Kenya Open presented by Absa in March.
He laid down a marker on day four at Rinkven International Golf Club with a win over Bernd Wiesberger in his quarter-final and then defeated Scotsman Ewen Ferguson in the last four.
Van Driel beat Matthew Southgate and Grégory Havret en route to the final on Sunday in Antwerp but the Dutchman could not match Migliozzi's three under par total.
Ferguson beat Havret by four shots in the play-off to claim third place ahead of the Frenchman.
In the second staging of this event with its innovative format, Migliozzi finished in a tie for fifth in Section A after 36 holes of stroke play and then beat Pedro Oriol, defending champion Adrian Otaegui and David Law in his first three knockout matches over nine holes of medal match play.
The victory moves Migliozzi to 21st on the Race to Dubai Rankings Presented by Rolex, into the top 100 on the Official World Golf Ranking, and makes him the second 2018 Q School graduate to win twice on the 2019 Race to Dubai after Kurt Kitayama.
Player Quotes
Guido Migliozzi: "I'm feeling very good. I managed very well this afternoon, all the shots.
"It's been great playing like this with such great players. I'm playing solid and I will try to continue this quality in the future.
"He (Van Driel) played very solid, we played together on the Challenge Tour and it's been a great match. He's a good player."
Darius van Driel: "It's a great week. Best birthday present it could possibly give me, except for the win of course.
"I knew he was long (with the driver) but you've got to hit it straight and that's what he did on four out of the five holes. That put some pressure on me and forced me to make birdies. It didn't happen but I gave it my all. He played great.
"My focus is still on the Challenge Tour. I'm flying to Switzerland on Tuesday, we'll see how it goes there, see what tournament on the Challenge Tour is during the BMW. I'm hoping to play in Germany but we'll see how it goes.
"My whole family is here so we'll probably have some drinks and have dinner afterward."

Law out but Ferguson still in the Belgian KO mix

Round three report
Bernd Wiesberger continued his incredible comeback to advance to the quarter-finals of the Belgian Knockout at Rinkven International Golf Club.
After an opening 76 in Antwerp, the Austrian carded a 64 on day two to sneak into the medal match-play stages and won three matches on Saturday as he looks for a second consecutive European Tour win. He will next face Italian Guido Migliozzi, who needed two extra holes to beat Aberdonian David Law in his last-16 match.
In the other quarter-finals, another Scot Ewen Ferguson will face Gavin Green, Matthew Southgate will take on Darius van Driel, and Marcel Siem goes head to head with Grégory Havret.
Wiesberger missed seven months of last season with a wrist injury but if he can come through three more rounds of nine hole stroke play knockout, he will have two wins in seven days and six European Tour titles.
Green and home favourite Thomas Detry had made just one bogey each coming into their last 16 match and while they both kept that record intact, Green made three birdies to Detry's two.
Scot Ferguson trailed Nacho Elvira after five holes, with the Spaniard birdieing the first, but Elvira bogeyed the sixth and Ferguson holed a ten footer on the seventh and took advantage of the par five eighth to win by two shots. Dutchman Van Driel was made to battle for his last 16 victory, birdieing the last from eight feet to beat Dane Jeff Winther by one shot.
Southgate bogeyed the first and birdied the second and that was enough to hand the Englishman victory over Leon at level par, as the Chilean made three birdies and four bogeys. Frenchman Antoine Rozner also made three birdies and four bogeys in his nine holes, allowing Siem to emerge as a relatively comfortable victor after birdies on the second, third and sixth from the German.
South Africa's Burmester and Frenchman Havret did not make a birdie between them in their last 16 match but Havret's single bogey on the first was followed by eight pars as Burmester made two bogeys and a double.
Player Quotes
Bernd Wiesberger: "We got it done. We had a really strong opponent this afternoon and he kept finding a last putt, it was good to get that over the line.
"I played quite steady, nothing fancy, picked up a couple of shots every now and then when I needed to and made sure I wasn't going to give him any free shots. I kind of plugged away.
"It was not quite the start to the week we wanted but we found something yesterday and a couple under par steadily today as well. We got our games in nice and tight, it's working very well out there.
"We need to make sure we don't lose our focus, in this format you don't want to be behind early in the game and just make sure 100 per cent focus is on the next shot."
Marcel Siem: “I am very happy with my game. Antoine (Rosner) is a strong player and I knew if I made one mistake, he was going to get me, so quite a bit of pressure. That format is unbelievable. Usually if you play match play you can be a lot more aggressive when you are two up. If you make a bogey and he makes a birdie, then you are all square, so on this golf course it is pretty tough mentally.
“I started with a new coach about six weeks ago just before Morocco and he got me back to my old swing a little bit, and renewed my follow though. I am staying behind the ball instead of having a reverse pivot and being too handsy on the impact, and that helps me a lot, especially under pressure hitting good shots.
Thomas Detry: "I'm very sad, very disappointed. I played some great golf, I made one bogey the whole day. I left one putt short at 17, he made it, that's golf, we move on.
"It was great, fantastic. Thomas Pieters came out as well and watched me, all the Belgian juniors, Belgian crowd, it's just fantastic. At this venue especially, with a tree lined course, when the crowd get going, it's pretty amazing.”

Heather MacRae wins Women's PGA Professional Championship amid cancer fight

Heather MacRae
Heather MacRae won the Women's PGA Professional Championship by two shots at Trentham Golf Club

Women's PGA Professional Championship final leaderboard
-2 H MacRae (Sco); S Dickens (Eng), A Gray (Eng); +1 H Kavanagh (Ire), H Tottman (Eng); +3 S Walton (Eng), M Tulley (Eng), A Nicholas (Eng), J Rigby (Eng)
Scotland's Heather MacRae has won the Women's PGA Professional Championship two weeks before she is scheduled to have cervical cancer surgery.
MacRae, 35, clinched the 36-hole tournament by two shots at Trentham Golf Club, finishing two under par.
Topping the 26-strong field secures her place on the Great Britain and Ireland team for the inaugural Women's PGA Cup, which takes place in Texas during October.
And MacRae earns £1,000 in prize money.
English pair Suzanne Dickens and Ali Gray were tied second on level par, with Hazel Kavanagh of Ireland and England's Hayleigh Tottman a further shot back.
MacRae will return north next week to compete in the Tartan Tour's Northern Open at Newmachar, then Paul Lawrie's Scottish Par-Three Championship the following week, before undergoing the operation she hopes will remove the cancer.
In a newspaper interview this week, the Scot described being diagnosed in early March as "completely unexpected".
"I'd never felt fitter. But every time I would go and get results it just seemed to be one thing and then another thing and another thing," she said.
"I had a scan four weeks ago and they told me it wasn't as bad as they first thought. I had a couple of weeks of relief. And then I went back to Glasgow again for more checks and was told, 'it's not great'.
"I feel like I have just been on autopilot for weeks. I'm expecting when, fingers crossed, it's all done and dealt with, it will hit me. Just now though you have to get on with life."
