Pavan overcomes Harrington to win

Czech Masters, Jamieson joint 4th

Andrew Pavan claimed his maiden European Tour title in spectacular style at the D+D Real Czech Masters, as a back- nine birdie blitz - which included a monster putt at the par three 16th - helped the Italian topple three-time Major champion Padraig Harrington.
It was a thrilling battle between the two playing partners, who shared a three-shot lead heading into the final day at Albatross Golf Resort, and Harrington appeared to be cruising to a 16th title when they reached the turn.
The Irishman was three shots clear but Pavan turned the tide with a stunning inward-half performance. The 29 year old picked up shots at the tenth and 12th holes to close the gap before Harrington almost holed out from the tee at the par three 13th, a birdie 2 seemingly closing the door on Pavan.
But a birdie from Pavan at the 14th paired with a bogey for Harrington at the 15th meant they were all square with three to play.
The crucial moment came at the 16th as the Italian sank a 30ft putt for a birdie two and the outright lead. Another birdie at the 17th meant he held a two-stroke advantage on the 18th tee, parring the last for a five-under 67 and a two-stroke victory on a 22-under total.
The win moved Pavan to 39th in the Race to Dubai Rankings presented by Rolex.
Scott Jamieson's fourth-round 70 was the worst his scores but his total of 15-under-par 273 was good enough only to share fourth place.
Player quotes:
Andrea Pavan
“It's amazing, it's massive. I've won four times on the Challenge Tour but it was a long time ago. I'll enjoy this one because it's really hard to get and I'll just keep working on the stuff that seems to be working and enjoy the success.
“I'm going back home tomorrow and we're having a second baby, a little girl is coming on Wednesday. We're really excited about that and I can't wait to celebrate with my family.
“Padraig has got so much experience, such a great player and he played lovely. The putt on 16 was massive. It could have easily gone both ways. He was ahead of me most of the day but after I got ahead I stayed aggressive, which I’m pleased I did because it came down to the last.
“I was a little bit nervous to start with and then you make a bogey on the second. Then I settled down, but I’ve been playing well the last couple of weeks. In golf you never know, you just have to keep pushing and I hit a lot of good tee shots and gave myself birdie chances.
“On the 17th I was getting a bit emotional, just trying not to get ahead of myself. I think playing against Padraig, knowing how good he is, it kept me grounded and in the moment a bit more, knowing he could easily birdie the last two.
“I was really trying to birdie the last two. It’s just amazing. It’s going to take some time to sink in.”
Padraig Harrington
“It was a good contest, no doubt about it. I obviously don’t feel like I lost it, Andrea won it for sure. He played great coming home and holed the decisive putts. I get my fair share of wins but it wasn’t my day today.
“To shoot 20 under par on any golf course, you’ve got to put some numbers together so I’m happy with that, Andrea just finished really well. He played lovely golf all day to be honest and made those birdies. It’s a pity but I’ll settle for this most weeks.
“I’ll give myself plenty of chances to win and I know it’s a numbers game, some weeks it will be my turn for the putts to drop and hit the right shots at the right time.
“I play well on this style of golf course, with flier lies and on these types of greens I can get up and down a lot. It frees me up so I can go for plenty of pins and make birdies. I know I can get up and down from most of the lies. It’s very similar to where I won the Portugal Masters, the right type of golf course for me.
“I don’t feel I have an issue playing against these younger guys, I feel I can certainly keep up with them and I have some good things in my own game. Even from a week like this, you learn more when you get in contention.
“I’m seeing things about my game that I can improve and work on. I’m in a nice place, I just have to keep doing the good stuff and hopefully there’ll be more tournaments like this ahead.”
Gavin Green
“I played solid today and gave myself a lot of looks, unfortunately some putts didn’t drop on the back nine. I made some putts in the middle but it is what it is and it was a very positive week.
“I’m really happy and proud with how I handled myself out there. It was fun playing with Scott (Jamieson), we both had no dropped shots. I knew I had a bit of a cushion in third place so I wanted to go for the pin at 18th and it came up a little short. I hit a really good putt and it was nice to finish like that.
“I’m close to keeping my card so it’s definitely positive. There are a couple more events coming up so hopefully I can have a couple of good finishes and I’ll be happy.
“It was fun to have my dad on the bag and some of my buddies are here so we hung out a lot and it’s nice to have a top three from the week.”

Aussie Fowler wins Willow Senior

Classic by two from Gary Orr

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Peter Fowler won his first Staysure Tour title in three years as he emerged victorious at the Willow Senior Golf Classic at Hanbury Manor Marriott Hotel and Country Club.
The Australian, now a six-time winner on the European over-50s circuit, started the day in a four-way share of the lead on nine under par and carded his second consecutive round of 69 to finish on 12 under, two strokes clear of Clark Dennis and Gary Orr.
The lead changed hands on numerous occasions throughout the day, with Roger Chapman, Phil Golding, Santiago Luna and Miguel Ángel Martín all staking their claims for the title.
A birdie on the par four 14th hole proved crucial, however, as Fowler moved one stroke clear of the pack. His fourth birdie of the day, on the 18th hole, rubber-stamped his sixth Staysure Tour title – his first since the 2015 ISPS Handa Seniors PGA Championship.
“It’s hard work getting your game into shape for you to win,” said Fowler. “There’s lot of younger players coming through and I’m glad I stayed on top today.
“I played with Miguel, and when he started birdie-eagle, I knew it would be a tough day. I was just trying to keep my game steady; I only had one bogey which was good. I didn’t see a leaderboard until the 17th green and I thought a couple of pars would do it – I birdied the last which gave me that two-shot gap. It was a good feeling.”
Fowler, one of the most consistent players on the Staysure Tour, has recorded tied second, third, sixth, eighth and tenth finishes so far this year. He has also finished inside the top ten 21 times in 44 starts since his last victory.
“I pride myself in staying in good shape and being reasonably consistent,” said Fowler. “We all have bad days, but I try and keep those to a minimum. That’s what I try to do all year round.
“If you keep knocking on the door and putting yourself in some sort of position it might jump you up, it makes me feel really good about what I’m working on.”
Chapman, Stephen Dodd, Golding and Martín shared fourth place on nine under par. Gary Wolstenholme carded the lowest round of the day, a six under par 66, to share eight place with James Kingston and Luna.

THE EUROPEAN TOUR - CELEBRATING GOLF. WORLDWIDE.
About the Staysure Tour
The Staysure Tour, formerly known as the European Senior Tour, is the men’s professional golf tour for members aged 50 and older. In 2018, the Staysure Tour Schedule will feature a minimum of 16 tournaments across four continents.
Five years after the first edition of The Senior Open, won by Neil Coles in 1987, more than 60 professionals called for a formally-structed Tour, which was then created in 1992. Many of the pioneering champions who played on the European Tour during the 1970s, 80s and 90s make up the Staysure Tour’s active membership which, in 2017, included eight Ryder Cup Captains, 29 former Ryder Cup players, nine Major Champions and 73 European Tour winners.
Former Ryder Cup Captains Colin Montgomerie, Sam Torrance and Ian Woosnam are among the winners of the John Jacobs Trophy, which is awarded to the golfer who finishes first on the Staysure Tour Order of Merit each season. Former Ryder Cup player, the late Tommy Horton is the record winner of the Trophy, winning his first in 1993 and four consecutively from 1996-99.
United Kingdom-based insurance company Staysure became the first ever title sponsor of the European Senior Tour on January 2, 2018 at the start of the Tour’s 27th season. The deal includes the incorporation of a new headline event, the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship.

GODSMAN WINS NORTH OF SCOTLAND

OPEN AMATEUR TITLE

Moray Golf Club member Kyle Godsman won the North of Scotland Open amateur stroke play championship for the David Blair Trophy by six strokes over 72 holes at Nairn Golf Club over the weekend.
Hopeman-based Godsman, pictured, virtually won the prestigious tournament with one score - a brilliant second round of eight-under-par 64 on Saturday.
That beat Fraser Fotheringham's course record off the blue tees, and lifted Kyle clear of the field. Godsman solidified his pole position with Sunday rounds of 74 and 70 for a five-under final total of 283.
Success in the David Blair Trophy tournament was a change of luck for Godsman who had lost TWO play-offs in this event - at Elgin in 2014 and last year at Royal Dornoch.
Home course member David Sanderson finished second on 289. He had two double bogeys in his final round of 73 - a 5 at the short fourth and a 7at the par-5 18th. But he did birdie the fifth, seventh, 10th, 12th and 17th in halves of 38 and 35.

Newmachar's Mark Rae and Steve Gauld win Simmers Trophy

Sutherland's 12-under 60 only one shot off his

Champions Tour record

SNOQUALMIE, Washington -- Kevin Sutherland shot a 12-under 60 on Saturday in the Boeing Classic, birdieing the final four holes to finish a stroke off his own PGA Tour Champions record.

Needing an eagle on the par-5 18th for another 59, Sutherland made a birdie after missing the green with a 3-iron approach. He was tied for the lead with Ken Tanigawa at 14-under 130.

"I birdied 16, I go, 'You birdie 17 and you eagle 18, you're there," Sutherland said. "But it's easier said than done -- eagles just don't happen all the time. But I gave myself a chance, hit a really good drive. ... I didn't hit a great 3-iron. It would have been nice to hit one up there and give yourself at least a putt at it and that didn't happen."

In 2014, Sutherland became the only player to break 60 in the history of the 50-and-over tour, shooting a 13-under 59 -- with a closing bogey -- in the Dick's Sporting Goods Open.

"One of the lessons I did learn from Endicott was that there was this feeling that you actually had won something before the tournament was over, and I did not play well the next day," Sutherland said. "So, I'm going to take a little bit of that with me."

On Saturday at The Club at Snoqualmie Ridge, Sutherland played the back nine in 7-under 29, also birdieing Nos. 10, 12 and 13. He opened with three pars in cold conditions, then birdied No. 4 and Nos. 6-9.

"I hit it very close to the hole on five holes on the front," Sutherland said. "I hit it about a foot 3 feet on 10 and then about a foot on 12. Then I started hitting good shots, but they were going to like 15 feet and I started making those, too. So it all worked together. There wasn't a shot that I didn't hit well out there today until the last hole, and that 3-iron, I just came out of it a little bit."

He didn't dwell on missing a chance for another 59, and he did break the course record of 61 set by Scott Simpson and Tom Jenkins in 2006.

"Trust me, I'm not even remotely disappointed with the day," Sutherland said. "It's all positive. Yeah, shooting a 59 is just, for me, was once in a lifetime. Just to have an opportunity to shoot it again was just a treat, so it's all good."

Sutherland won the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship last year in Phoenix for his lone PGA Tour Champions title. He won the 2002 World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship for his only PGA Tour title, beating childhood rival Scott McCarron in the final at Las Costa.

Tanigawa shot 64, closing with a birdie in a back-nine 30.

"Always hope for the best, prepare for the worst," Tanigawa said. "You just go out and play, and it added up to that -- and it's pretty cool that it did. "

Scott McCarron was third at 11 under after a 67.

Scott Dunlap (66) was 10 under, a stroke ahead of Scott Parel (70), Tom Pernice Jr. (70) and Kent Jones (70).

Bernhard Langer shot his second straight 68 for his 11th under-par round in a row at Snoqualmie Ridge. The German star won the event in 2010 and 2016.

Hometown star Fred Couples remained 1 under after a 72.

Darren Clarke and Chris DiMarco were well back in their Champions debuts. Clarke was even par after a 76, and DiMarco 5 over after a 75
