Lamb’s 67 leads at the 

English men’s amateur

Northumberland’s 20-year-old Matty Lamb shot five-under 67 at Formby Golf Club, Lancashire, to lead the first round of qualifying at the English men’s amateur championship today.

He’s one ahead of Kent’s Jensen Hull - who gave himself an excellent 18th birthday present with his 68 - and Northamptonshire’s Callum Farr. 

After his round, young Hull, from Hever Castle, said he would celebrate his birthday this evening with dinner with his dad, but he added: “I won’t be drinking!” 

Instead, like leader Lamb, he’ll be planning for Wednesday’s second round at Hesketh Golf Club. 

Lamb, pictured, has been coming into form as this championship approached, and proved it when he went out in five-under 32.

 “I holed a good putt to birdie the first and that got me in a good frame of mind for the rest of the day. I gave myself good chances and holed a few putts,” 

He slowed down a bit on the back nine, but balanced a bogey with a birdie to come home in level par for a 67. 

Hull was also pleased with his day’s work. “It’s been a good day,” he said. “I was a little bit more consistent than I have been, hit the ball better, holed a few putts and stayed patient.” 

He had five birdies, including one of the 13th, where he got up and down from 195 yards away on the 14th fairway. He also had an eagle on the par-517th which he reached with a driver and a six-iron. 

Farr (Northamptonshire County), meanwhile, played his first round at Hesketh where he started with a birdie. Four more followed, together with a string of pars, until he dropped his only shot of the day on the 18th. 

Lamb, Hull and Farr are among a field of 288 competitors who are all aiming to be inside the top 64 and ties after Wednesday’s second round. That’s the number of players who will qualify for the match- play knock-out stages at Formby, ending with the 36-hole final on Sunday. 

The cut looks like being a low one after 49 players equalled par or better today. 

Among the others who made a good start were Brabazon Trophy winner Nick Poppleton (Wath), who is just back from GB and I duty at the St Andrews Trophy match against the Continent of Europe in Finland.

He’s on three-under, alongside another England international, Jake Burnage (Saunton), Sam Bairstow (Hallowes) and George Raitt (Whetstone).

SIXTH TITLE IN GREIG HUTCHEON’S 

SIGHTS AT DEER PARK MASTERS

Five-time champion Greig Hutcheon (pictured) battled the toughest conditions on a windy first day at the 2018 Emtec Group Deer Park Masters to sit two shots clear at the top of the leaderboard overnight with an impressive score of five-under-par 67.

Hutcheon was awarded an honorary membership of Deer Park last year in recognition of his achievements in this event and he got off to the perfect start with an eagle on the par-4 first hole after finding the green with his opening drive. That good form continued throughout the rest of his round and he now sits in a strong position as he targets a sixth title in just 15 years since the Emtec Group Deer Park Masters was first staged.

The Paul Lawrie Golf Centre man will face stiff competition for the trophy, however, as North Lanarkshire Leisure’s Paul O’Hara is just two shots back on three-under-par and he will be looking to mount a serious challenge on day two.

2017 PGA Cup winner Chris Currie has enjoyed a lot of success at Deer Park recently, having claimed the first Tartan Tour Order of Merit title of the season at the Livingston venue in May this year. He found himself at the top of the leaderboard once again alongside West Linton’s Gareth Wright after the morning wave of players and both will be looking to bridge the three-shot gap between themselves and Hutcheon on Wednesday

The Deer Park Masters continues tomorrow when all 50 PGA professionals return to the acclaimed West Lothian lay-out for their second round with a further 150 amateurs taking part in the biggest pro-am event on the Tartan Tour circuit.

Philip Brown wins Angus boys' stroke-play title but loses first match-play tie

Monifieth's Philip Brown won in the Angus boys' stroke-play championship at Letham Grange's Glens course with rounds of 67 and 72.
There were only 14 entries compared with 40 in recent years.

Brown later lost by one hole to Jamie Miller in the first round of the match-play championship. The final, between Miller and Rory Bain will tee off at 9am tomorrow (Thursday).
Ewan Wheat (Royal Montrose) was officially placed second to Brown on a card countback against Joel Thomson (Royal Montrose). They both finished on 141 with scores of 73 and 68.
Thomson was the winner of the handicap championship.
Finn Coull (Royal Montrose) won the Under-14s' championship.

 NEW CHAMPIONSHIP OFFICE AND ELECTRONIC SCOREBOARD PARKS-UP AT MEN’S AMATEUR

 

SCOTTISH GOLF NEWS RELEASE 

Technology’s growing role in sport is being embraced by Scottish Golf as a new mobile Championship Office incorporating an electronic scoreboard debuts at the Scottish Men’s Amateur Championship in Blairgowrie this week.

 

With the capability to support all events covering the length and breadth of the country, the new technology will greatly enhance the event experience for players, clubs and supporters alike.

 

The main feature of the new office is a fully integrated 2m x 1m electronic scoreboard which will be used to provide greater scoring visibility as well as display key event and sponsor messages on-site.

 

The Championship Office will provide a more consistent, efficient and sustainable approach to scoring at all Scottish Golf championships.

 This will prove an economic long-term investment and in turn reduce the need to produce plastic name strips and paper draws, as users are encouraged to use their mobile devices for live scoring updates.

It will also offer up a raft of opportunities for both current and prospective sponsors as well as encourage greater social media engagement. 

The technology will also integrate the current tournament system, providing deeper insights into key areas such as pace of play and scoring, where officials and volunteers are already using tablets to monitor play and input scores while on course. 

Fraser Munro, Head of Events, said:

“Our new championship office and electronic scoreboard is another really positive development for our events and shows Scottish Golf are positioning themselves at the forefront of technology, which is undoubtedly going to play an increased role in our sport going forward. 

“It can only be good for the image of golf in Scotland, helping us engage with and attract more young people to golf as well as providing a greater level of support for our clubs, particularly around championships. 

"As it rolls out across the country in the coming months we look forward to seeing it help players and spectators and enhance the overall event experience.”

Scottish men's championship report, scores from Blairgowrie

Eric McIntosh's 64 equals Rosemount record for a clear lead after first Qualifying Round

Eric McIntosh (Bruntsfield Links), the 2016 Scottish U18 boys champion, showed the capacity field a clean pair of heels with a course record-equalling score in the first stroke-play qualifying round of the Scottish men's amateur championship at Blairgowrie Golf Club.

US college student McIntosh, pictured left, shot a 64 over the par-72 Rosemount Course, finishing the day three clear of Andrew Thornton (Lundin) and Andrew Davidson (Charleton) who also played their first rounds over the Rosemount Course.
Davidson had a hole in one with a 52 degree wedge at the short 15th, the "Wee Dunt."
The Lansdowne course, which is also being used, has the same par of 72 but has an SSS of 73 and the CSS for this course today was 74, compared with 72 for the so called "easier" Rosemount lay-out.
The leaders over the Lansdowne course shot 69, including one of the North's leading hopes, Kyle Godsman (Moray).
The players switch courses for their second Q round and then at the end of the 36 holes, the 64 players with the lowest aggregates will go into the match-play stages.

SCOTTISH GOLF SUMMARY OF OPENING DAY AT BLAIRGOWRIE

Bruntsfield’s Eric McIntosh, 19, leads the field after today’s opening round of the Scottish Men’s Amateur Championship at Blairgowrie.

The 2016 Scottish boys' champion, who is currently in the US attending Northwestern College, carded an 8-under par course record-equalling 64 on the Rosemount Course and is three shots clear of Andrew Thornton (Lundin Golf Club) and Charleton’s Andrew Davidson on 5-under.

It was all smiles for Davidson towards the end of his round as he aced the 15th hole, Wee Dunt, with a perfectly executed 52-degree wedge.

The now joint Rosemount Course record holder, host club member Glenn Campbell, is also in the field this week and returned a solid level par 72 to sit in a share of 37th place. Campbell won the Scottish Men’s Amateur Championship 13 years ago at Southerness.

On a day where the scoring was lower on the Rosemount Course, Stuart Blair (Royal Musselburgh), Sean Marc (Broomieknowe) Kyle Godsman (Moray) and Michael Brodie (Alyth) returned the joint lowest scores of the day on the Lansdowne course with 3-under par 69’s.

The field of 264 golfers will resume tomorrow for the second round of stroke-play qualifying, with the top 64 players progressing to the match-play stages.
