Bradley Neil regrets having to miss Blairgowrie tournament in memory of Barrie Douglas
By GORDON BANNERMAN
BRADLEY Neil admits he let his head rule his heart in accepting a late invitation to join the field at the Volvo China Open.
The 22-year-old European Tour rookie jumped at the chance of playing in Beijing. The Far East call-up prompted a change of plans and he will miss cheering on youngsters playing in a three-day event at Blairgowrie Golf Club in memory of mentor and former Scotland boys team captain Barrie Douglas, pictured below.

More than 80 of the country’s top young players at U18 and U16 level line-up tomorrow through to Sunday at the “Barrie Douglas Scottish Junior Masters,” backed by Tayside law firm Blackadders and a string of other companies.

The inaugural tournament is being staged in memory of Perth family man Barrie, who took ill and died, aged 69, at last year’s European Boys Team Championship in Spain.

“I would love to have been at Blairgowrie but I have a job to do. Barrie would have been first to understand,” said Neil. “It is so appropriate that the Junior Masters event should bear Barrie’s name. He was such an influential figure in Scottish and British golf for so long, for many years before he took me under his wing.“The help he gave youngsters pushing to break onto the national scene, like Wallace Booth, Gavin Dear, Kevin McAlpine, Danny Young, myself and many more, was invaluable. He helped countless juniors improve their game.
“With its history and location Blairgowrie should have an annual tournament. It’s fitting we now have a competition at the club where he was a member and in his memory, supporting local juniors and youngsters from further afield.
“I’m sure it will grow and grow, just like the Henry Cooper event has down south. This is a fitting legacy and hopefully I can help out in years to come.”
Neil missed the cut in Morocco last time out, hard on the heels of posting a disappointing final round at the Open de Espagna, where he went into the final round as a top 10 contender. But he insists his debut season on Tour is a learning curve.
“I have played practice rounds with top players like Justin Rose, Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott and Sandy Lyle but Madrid was different because it was for real.
“I was soaking it all in and it was a great experience playing with Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnston, who had huge support from the galleries. He was very supportive.”
Scottish Golf national boys coach Spencer Henderson is delighted that the Scottish Junior Masters field includes leading Order of Merit contenders at both U18 and U16 level.
“Barrie was a true friend of amateur golf in Scotland and was passionate about developing young players,” said Spencer.
“Members of the Foundation established in his memory quickly decided that the best way to remember Barrie was to establish a tournament bearing his name.”
The family feel to the tournament staged over the Lansdowne course is being encouraged by a Saturday fun golf evening with hot dogs sponsored by Carbon Financial Partners, who back European Tour pro Richie Ramsay.
Support sponsors include GS Brown Construction, A and J Stephen, The Blue Group, T’Go, GS Group, McLeod Glaziers, Dental Technique, Club 300, Barclays Bank, Decorum Decor and the Gibson family.

Daxing Jin of China
Daxing Jin of China.
Beijing, April 26: Homegrown talent Daxing Jin raised the local cheers when he signed for a flawless eight-under-par 64 to lead by one shot in the opening round of the prestigious Volvo China Open on Thursday.
The 25-year-old Jin, who is making his fifth appearance in his National Open this week, is thrilled to return with a bogey-free round highlighted by six birdies and an eagle at the Beijing Topwin Golf and Country Club.
Japanese hotshot Hideto Tanihara stole the limelight by driving home a new Volvo XC90 T5 Momentum, thanks to an ace on the par-three 16th hole in the CN¥20,000,000 (approx. US$3,178,000) event, which is the oldest professional golf tournament in the country.
Matt Wallace of England, who claimed his breakthrough win in India last month, carded a solid 65 to share second place with Nino Bertasio of Italy while in-form Scott Vincent of Zimbabwe stayed two shots off the pace in tied-fourth alongside Alexander Bjork of Sweden.
The 24th edition of the Volvo China Open is tri-sanctioned by the Asian Tour, European Tour and the China Golf Association. It is staged for the third successive year at the Topwin Golf and Country Club..
Players’ quotes:
Daxing Jin (Chn) - First round 64 (-8)
I played really well today. I’m really happy with my form and I have to say I would give myself 100 marks for today’s round. I hardly give myself 100 marks when I play in tournaments but today was really good I thought.
My strategy today was just to hit the greens in the regulation and I did that for 17 of the 18 holes, and the one I missed I managed a par, so that was great. My putting was good too. I made three long putts out there. I am really pleased.
I don’t want to give myself too much pressure. It’s still very early. I will continue to do what I have been doing for the next three rounds. I will just keep targeting fairways and greens out there and then give myself chances for birdies.
On the eighth hole, I was about ten yards from the pin with my second shot and I saw Scott (Jamieson) make eagle from a similar position so I had confidence that I might chip it in. I read the line from Scott’s shot and holed it.
It wasn’t very windy out there today and it was a pretty smooth round for me. I was targeting two or three-under today but I did better than that. I am really happy. I will aim to make the cut first but I don’t want to think about it right now.
I don’t think there’s much advantage playing in the morning. I think the conditions are pretty much similar out there.
I’ve been relaxed coming into this week because I don’t have too much expectation but I’ll just keep playing one stroke at a time, one day at a time and see how it goes for me.
Matt Wallace (Eng) - First Round 65 (-7)
I made a couple of bogeys which were from a couple of swing errors but overall, I am swinging it great. I have been trying to shorten my swing for a while and that’s been my main swing thought coming into this week which helped massively.
I have never really managed to do it till last week when I found something and it’s a weird feeling. I feel like I am swinging it halfway but I am actually striking it better and not losing any distance.
My ball was slightly in the rough and I just hit a nice fade into the green with my three-iron and it turned out perfectly. Had a right-to-left putt from seven- feet and rolled it into the hole for eagle on the eighth.
I had a bogey on the fourth hole so it was a nice comeback. Birdied the last hole as well, just played it left-to-right the entire hole and the green slopes left-to-right. Hit my nine-iron into the green and had about six-feet for birdie.
I had a great group today and it was nice to catch up with Alexander Bjork and Julian Suri who I haven’t seen in a while. He was making a couple of birdies and I was making some too and we were rubbing off each other which was good.
This is my first full year on tour, I really like the country and I love the golf course and the weather was perfect today. I drove it well today which was key, setting it up nicely on the fairway so I can get it close on the green.

Henderson and Taylor share lead at Seniors' Spring meeting at windy Powfoot

By ALASDAIR MACGREGOR
The Scottish Seniors Golfing Society season got under way with the first
round of the 36-hole spring meeting attracting a field of 126 to Powfoot Golf Club on the Solway Firth.

Conditions were very difficult with a strong wind and a couple of heavy showers leading to  high scoring.
The best rounds of the day were a couple of three-over-par 74s from Stewart
Henderson (Hamilton), the 2017 Order of Merit winner, and David Taylor
(St Andrews New).

Henderson birdied the seventh but bogeyed the third, 10th, 14th and 18th.
Taylor had a very steady round of 15 pars and three bogeys: at the third, 16th and 18th.
At the halfway stage, they jointly lead by one shot from a group of four
players who scored 74 - Gary Tough (Edzell), Gordon MacDonald
(Glenbervie), Jalil Aman (Grangemouth) and Jim Devaney (Clydebank and
District).
Taylor, playing off three, also leads the handicap event with a net 71. Jim Devaney (Clydebank and District) is second with a net 72, and there are five players on 73.

and Ireland Curtis Cup team for USA
The R and A today announced the Great Britain and Ireland team to face the United States in the 40th Curtis Cup match which will be played at Quaker Ridge, New York fState, from June 8 to 10.

An eight-player team and one non-travelling reserve have been selected for the 2018 match with five players from England featuring alongside two Irishwomen and one Scot, 18-year-old Shannon McWilliam (Aboyne) from Torphins (pictured below).

With five players aged 20 or under, it is one of the youngest GB and I teams chosen for a Curtis Cup match.

“The players selected will now have a wonderful opportunity to perform on the international stage in one of the world’s most prestigious events and I’m sure that they will give their very best as we attempt to retain the trophy against a talented team from the United States.”
Ireland’s Leona Maguire, currently the number two golfer in the Women’s WORLD AMATEUR GOLF RANKING™, will turn professional next month and has ruled herself out of contention for selection, while England’s Isobel Wardle, who was also named in the provisional GB and I squad, has decided to focus on undertaking her school exams.

MacIntyre settles quickly in pro ranks: watch out for his

performance in this week's Turkish Airlines Challenge

CHALLENGE TOUR NEWS RELEASE
Anything new takes some getting used to, but Robert MacIntyre has taken to life as a professional golfer like a duck to water.
The Scottish left-hander from Oban will make just his second pro start on the European Challenge Tour this week, at the Turkish Airlines Challenge at Gloria Golf Club after a strong amateur career.
He first appeared on Europe’s top developmental tour as an amateur in 2016, competing in the SSE Scottish Hydro Challenge hosted by Macdonald Hotels and Resorts and the Irish Challenge.
Further starts at the Andalucía Costa del Sol Match Play 9, Le Vaudreuil Golf Challenge and the Vierumäki Finnish Challenge, which included an excellent five under par second round of 67, followed in 2017, a year in which he also represented Great Britain and Ireland in the Walker Cup.
MacIntyre competed twice on the MENA Golf Tour in 2017, based in the Middle East, and finished tied third in Jordan’s AYLA Golf Championship before recording his first professional victory at the Sahara Kuwait Golf Championship, winning by two shots thanks to rounds of 65-66-65 in the three-day event.
The left-hander ended 2017 with a tie for 42nd place on his European Tour debut at the Joburg Open and made his first Challenge Tour appearance of the year at the Belt and Road Colourful Yunnan Open earlier this month, finishing tied seventh.
MacIntyre believes his performance in China was the best he’s played for two years and can see his hard work in the off season coming to fruition.
“It was my second time in China,” he said. “I played in the Youth Olympics a few years before and I knew the troubles I was going to have when I got out there, but it was the same for everyone.
“The golf was probably the best I’ve played in two years and it’s going in the right direction.
“I’d been struggling tee to green for the past two years but I’ve worked a lot with my coach back home and it’s paid off so far. I’ve got to keep it going.”
This week’s Turkish Airlines Challenge will provide the 21 year old with his first taste of action in the country but he feels comfortable in Antalya, partly thanks to his fellow players.
“I just take golf as it comes,” MacIntyre said. “You don’t know what’s around the corner but I just prepare as well as I can and hopefully the week works out.
“I’m comfortable where I am and I travelled with a good group of guys, so everything’s in the right place for me.
“It’s been pretty good on Tour so far. I’ve not had to do simple things like find a place to do my washing. It’s been a week on and a week off so it’s not been too bad yet in that respect. So far, so good!
“I’ve never been to Turkey for golf before. A lot of the guys are raving about the course and it was my first time playing it on Tuesday – it was really good.”
The Glencruitten-born player has highlighted good putting as one of the keys to success at Gloria Golf Club and has a clear plan in his mind as to what he wants to achieve.
“I think your short game has got to be especially good to contend out here,” he said.
“The top guys are going to be holing a lot of putts – the greens are really good so I think putting will be important this week.
“I just want to secure my place on the Challenge Tour and then take it from there. I’ve got to stick to everything I do because it’s worked so far, that’s why I’m here, and hopefully it can take me even further.”
