CHLOE SLIPS TO 3rd IN PORTUGAL, SHANNON jt 9th AFTER NIGHTMARE PAIR OF 8s

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Stirling student Chloe Goadby from St Andrews fell back from the pole position to third place after a third-round, nine-over-par 81 in the 88th Portuguese women's international amateur golf championship at West Cliffs Golf Resort, Obidos today (Friday).
Chloe is now lying joint third on 228, four strokes behind the new leader, England's Annabell Fuller who had a par-matching 72, the best of the day, to jump into a three-stroke lead from Germany's Aline Krauter.
The newish course at West Cliffs seems to be too tough for the majority of the competitors. Even leader Annabell is EIGHT OVER PAR after 54 holes.
Aboyne's Shannon McWilliam had a nightmare round of 82 which included 8s at the par-4 11th and par-3 16th in halves of 38-44. She has dropped to joint ninth on 234.
Hannah McCook (Grantown on Spey) moved past her compatriot into seventh place on 232 with a round of 75.
England's Sophie Lamb had her first competitive hole in one at the fifth hole (118 metres). She also had an 8 at the par 5 seventh and a 7 at the par-4 18th in halves of 38 for a 76.
Sophie is now in sixth position on 230.
The field has been cut to the leading 40 and ties after 54 holes, which meant that the 41 players with three-round totals of 244 and better will go forward to Saturday's final round.
Among those who are now on the sidelines are Lily May Humphreys, the 15-year-old British girls and English women's amateur champion who had been making a good case for a Curtis Cup place in June with her form prior to this event.
Scotland's Eilidh Briggs (T53 on 248) was also a non-qualifier without showing anything like her best form.
Jennifer Saxton (T66 on 252) was another Scot who missed the cut.
According to some sources, the Nations Cup team event was decided over three rounds. If this is the case then England's Annabell Fuller, Sophie Lamb and Lily May Humphreys won the title with a best two from three total of 454.
Scotland's Hannah McCook, Shannon McWilliam and Eilidh Briggs finished second on 464 and Spain A were third on 465.
All of these statements subject to the Nations Cup being over three and not four rounds.
