Rhys Enoch ends winless spell at Boavista on Algarve Pro Tour.

Rhys Enoch captured just his second win as a professional at Boavista Golf and Resort, near Lagos, with two solid rounds of 65 and 67 for a tournament total of 10 under par and a 2 shot winning margin over Josh Fagan in the Algarve Pro Tour 36-hole event on November 28-29.

It was Enoch’s first professional win since 2012 at Bowood, on The Jamega Tour and he said he was delighted to get “The Monkey” off his back and win again.

Enoch led “wire to wire” with a first round 6 under 65 to establish a one-shot lead over Billy Spooner and the veteran Michael Watson.

Tucked in behind Spooner and Watson on 4 under were Luke Groves and former European Tour winner David Dixon.

After a stuttering start Enoch settled down and turned in 2 under par but a rampaging Groves got to nine under par to lead Enoch by one and it was game on.

The back nine of any tournament produces drama and Groves, after starting with a birdie, imploded in spectacular fashion dropping 4 shots over the final 8 holes to post a tournament total of 6 under par.

Meanwhile Enoch cruised through the back nine and a birdie on the penultimate hole gave him a 2 shot cushion over the Josh Fagan, who had earlier carded a 7 under par 64 to post an 8 under par total.

A solid par at the last saw a mightily relieved Enoch home and dry against a strong field of players which should boost his confidence for his forthcoming Challenge Tour campaign.

Australia’s Peter Fowler carded a season's best seven under par round of 65 at Constance Belle Mare Plage as he took a one stroke lead at the MCB Tour Championship, the final event of the 2017 European Senior Tour season.

The 58 year old, a former winner of the John Jacobs Trophy, arrived in Mauritius with an outside chance of topping the Order of Merit for the second time and birdied three of the last six holes to finish the opening day one stroke ahead of defending MCB Tour Championship winner Barry Lane, Mark McNulty and Thaworn Wiratchant, who each carded six under par rounds.

Fowler started the day with four birdies on the first six holes, making the turn in 32, and his late flourish saw him take sole possession of first place.

“I’m really pleased, that’s the best I’ve putted all year,” said Fowler. “I was happy with my rhythm around the course. I think you could shoot lower here, but it depends on how you’re rolling your putts on these grainy greens – it’s not easy.

“It’s not a long course, but it’s tricky. The greens are small, and you have to be accurate both off the tee and into the greens.

“Competition here is tough. I played with Paul Broadhurst today, and there’s David Frost and Tom Lehman here too. They are hardened campaigners.”

Lane and McNulty both fired bogey free rounds, with Lane eagling the 18th hole to share second place.
“The shot I hit into the last was magnificent,” said Lane. “I had 220 yards into the wind, and I told my caddie it was a perfect five wood, but I had to hit it perfect; thankfully I did and then I rolled the putt in.
“I haven’t felt well today at all. I’ve got an awful cold, but you need to go out there and enjoy it.
“I just hope I feel better tomorrow. I love this course and I play it nicely. I putted beautifully today and got up and down when I needed to.”

McNulty, playing in just his fourth regular Senior Tour event, was equally pleased with his round.

“I’m chuffed with the way I played,” said the Irishman. “I putted nicely, and I’m happy with the round. The weather is beautiful here, and that score has given me a good base to work with.”

Order of Merit leader Clark Dennis shares fifth place with André Bossert after a four under par round of 68. Philip Golding, who has an outside chance of winning the John Jacobs Trophy, is one of six golfers in a share of seventh on three under par.

Flying Finn Pulkkanen sets 14-under-par clubhouse target at Joburg Open

Tapio Pulkkanen fired an impressive 64 to set the clubhouse target at 14 under on day two of the Joburg Open at Randpark Golf Club.
The Finn missed his first cut as a European Tour regular at the UBS Hong Kong Open but he was in no danger of that in Johannesburg as low scoring continued to be the order of the day for the field of 240 over two rain-softened layouts.
Pulkkanen was playing the Firethorn Course after firing an opening 65 on the Bushwillow Course and he stayed bogey-free for the week to lead by two from South Africa's Erik van Rooyen.
England's Daniel Brooks was then at ten under, a shot clear of countryman James Morrison.
Pulkkanen - the 2017 Road to Oman winner - had finished his first round with two birdies and he carried that momentum onto the Firethorn, starting with six in a row to turn in 30 and get to 12 under.
He broke a run of four pars with a 15-foot putt on the 11th and got on the par five 12th in two to make another birdie before saving par on the next after putting his tee-shot behind a sapling. Six closing pars then saw him set the target at 14 under.
Van Rooyen also made a fast start with four birdies in a row but he bogeyed the sixth to sit at ten under at the turn. He made another gain at the 13th but Pulkkanen's lead was briefly three shots before Van Rooyen holed from the fringe on the 16th.

Brooks birdied the first, third and fourth and while he dropped a shot on the eighth, another gain on the ninth saw him turn in 33. He made another birdie on the 13th and when he hit a smart approach into the 16th he was into double-figures.
Morrison had birdies on the fourth and sixth but a bogey on the third to turn in 35 and made a closing birdie to sign for a 70.
Indian Shubhankar Sharma was also at nine under after playing his first ten holes on the Bushwillow in six under.
Englishman Marcus Armitage was at eight under after a bogey-free 66 containing four birdies and an eagle on the 14th.
German Sebastian Heisele was also at eight under after a 71 alongside South African Jaco Ahlers, with both players having played the Firethorn.
Norwegian Kristian Krogh Johannessen signed for a 66 on the Bushwillow with Matthew Baldwin completing the group six shots off the lead having played his first eight holes on the Firethorn in one under.
Dane Jeff Winther signed for a 66 on the Bushwillow to sit at seven under

Is this USA public course with three, six, nine and 18-hole loops the way that golf must go?

Arlington Lakes, an innovative public golf course in Illinois

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Scotland is, quite  rightly, proud of its status of being the "Home of Golf" but, as a golfing nation, are we too set in our ways?
I think that if golf were "invented" in 2017-2018 it would be a nine-hole game because 18 holes can take so long to play and, unless you are retired, people don't have the spare time they might have in days gone by for a sporting pursuit.
The R and A, in the last year or two, have been pushing the idea of nine-hole golf and organising such an annual event.
To get to the point, I stumbled this week upon a very interesting article on the American Society of Golf Course Architects' website.
It highlighted the fact that in the state of Illinois at Arlington Heights there is a trail-blazing club/course that is perhaps the way that golf must go to retain its popularity with the public.
I quote from the website:

Arlington Lakes Golf Club, is a 5,400-yard public course designed for a niche market of juniors, seniors and newer players ... providing golfers with the option of playing three-hole, six-hole, nine-hole and 18-hole loops.

In the post-World War II era the R and A encouraged more and more golf courses - the 18-hole variety - to be built.
Fast forward to 2017 going into 2018 and perhaps the R and A should be using its influence to persuade developers to build courses such as they have at Arlington Lakes.

What do you think?
