Royal Porthcawl bites back as five share

Five players share the lead on one-over-par 143 after the second round of the Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex as Royal Porthcawl Golf Club was battered by wind and rain on Friday.
Bernhard Langer was victorious on the Welsh links in 2014 by a record 13 strokes, finishing with an 18 under par total, but conditions this time round were a different prospect as just one golfer in the 144-man field, Santiago Luna, carded an under par round.
Langer, who is seeking a record-setting tenth Senior Major victory, carded a three over par round of 74 for a one over par total – his first round over par in six played at Royal Porthcawl.
“It was much harder this morning than yesterday,” said Langer. “It was blowing 25 (mph) with rain; it was just miserable.
“The first two hours or so, the wind was blowing strong and it was raining on top of it. It was just very difficult to do anything. The first hour or two was probably as brutal as I’ve seen it; and I’ve been many places and seen a lot of things.
“I’m still in a good position. There’s a lot of golf to be played yet.”
Fellow former Ryder Cup Captain Tom Lehman from America carded a round of 72 to finish one over par, joining compatriots Steve Flesch and Billy Mayfair, and Argentina’s Mauricio Molina in a share of the lead.
As one of 16 Major Champions in the field, Lehman is one of five former Open Championship winners hoping to add the Senior Claret Jug to their trophy cabinet – Tom Watson achieved this feat first in 2003 and then won in 2005 and 2007.
“Golf is about momentum, and if you can get off to a good start in bad weather and you can find some kind of rhythm where you’re plodding along, making pars, and managing, then you can deal with conditions like that.
“I drove the ball well, put myself in places where I could get it on or near the green and chipped it and putted fairly well.”
In sixth place on two under par is American Clark Dennis, who has been in superb form on the European Senior Tour, finishing tied fourth, third and fifth in his last three regular tournament starts.
Mike Goodes, Peter Lonard and David McKenzie are four under par, one shot ahead of a clutch of players in a share of tenth place, including local favourite Phillip Price, the most recent winner on the Senior Tour, two-time Senior Major Champion Roger Chapman and 2010 Ryder Cup Captains Colin Montgomerie and Corey Pavin.

Ian Angus wins NE District seniors title over
home course at Duff House Royal
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Local knowledge paid off for Duff House Royal Golf Club's one-handicap member Ian Angus when he won the North-east District seniors championship over the Banff course with a scratch round of three-over-par 71.
Angus had a birdie at the par-5 12th and bogeys at the third, sixth, 14th and 17th in halves of 36 and35.
Angus, who won the title at Insch in 2012 and finished fifth last year, had a shot to spare over joint runners-up, clubmate Mike Jenkins, winner in 2004 and 2005, and Donald Smith (Portlethen).
Jenkins had halves of 34 and 38 ... a double bogey 6 at the 16th ruined his chance of heading Angus.
Smith was ahead of the field when he turned in 33 but it went pear-shaped for him on the inward half with bogeys at the 12th, 13th, 15th, 17th and 18th.
There was a field of 71 competitors, the majority from the Duff House Royal club.
Marshall Leisure continued their sponsorship of the over-50s tournament.

Chester leads European Open before rain ends play early in Germany
Ashley Chesters (pictured by courtesy of Getty Images)
Ashley Chesters posted a flawless 67 to grab the clubhouse lead before the second round of the weather-affected Porsche European Open was suspended due to fading light.
Chesters and fellow Englishman Jordan Smith were tied at the top of the leaderboard on eight under par when the second heavy downpour of the day forced play to be halted due to a waterlogged course at 12.59pm local time.
Upon resumption of play after close to a four hour delay, the 27 year old maintained his composure to finish his round with a par at the long ninth for a second successive bogey-free round to set the clubhouse target at nine under par.
That left him one stroke clear of Siddikur Rahman, who completed his round on Friday, and Richard McEvoy and defending champion Alexander Levy - both of whom were still out on course when play was suspended for the day at 20.52pm.
Smith meanwhile sits a further shot back at seven under alongside Sweden’s Jens Fahrbring after a run of five birdies on the back nine pushed him up the leaderboard, while a further eight players are tied at six under including overnight leader Julian Suri.
Players will complete round two when play resumes at 8am on Saturday morning with round three not commencing before 11am.
Player Quotes
Ashley Chesters
“I definitely didn’t hit it as well off the tee today but the putting made up for a lot so that was nice. I’ll do a bit of work on the range later and hopefully sort the driving out and get away tomorrow.
“I didn’t even realise I had gone bogey free today, it didn’t really come into my head on the way around so, it’s always nice to keep the bogeys off the card, it’s the easiest way to get a good score.
“It’s a completely new experience, tomorrow is going to be totally new to me but the whole year has been a learning experience for me. I seem to have learnt a lot so far so I’m guessing tomorrow is going to be the same.”
Siddikur Rahman
“I am so happy, especially today because my short game was very good. I holed many long putts today and that’s why I played so good and managed to make a better score.
“I’m very fortunate that my short games has been very good and because of that I managed to score otherwise it is a very long course for me. I am playing quite good, I’m doing everything I’m supposed to do and I think everything is coming smoothly.
“I am excited for the weekend and really looking forward to the weather being good."
Jordan Smith
“I’m loving the course out there and playing good, so I’ve just got to go into the weekend and give it my best.
“I was in a good flow, I would have loved to have get the two holes done and dusted there but obviously you can’t really help the weather, so you just have to come in and relax, take your mind off things and get started again.
“I had a good year last year and the target this year was to keep my tour card, which I managed to do pretty quickly, so now the next aim is to win an event.”

cut in Swedish Challenge
Pedro Oriol maintained his position at the top of the leaderboard with another excellent showing at the Swedish Challenge hosted by Robert Karlsson.
The Spaniard took a slender lead into the second round at Katrineholms Golfklubb, after an eight-under-par 64 left him one clear of the rest of the field.
Starting at the tenth, the 31 year old continued his fine form with two birdies in his first five holes, moving further ahead of the chasing pack.
Further gains at the first, fifth and eighth were offset by a bogey at the ninth – which meant Oriol signed for a 68 to move to 12 under par overall.
Heading into the weekend with a two-shot lead over England’s Jack Senior and tournament host Karlsson, Oriol is fully confident he can continue to lead from the front.
“I played pretty good,” said Oriol, who currently sits in 15th place in the Road to Oman Rankings.
“I didn’t play the par fives as well as yesterday – I only made one birdie – but everything in my game was working well again.
“I think the wind was very different today. It was blowing in the opposite direction, and that definitely made things trickier.
“After the first two days I am feeling confident and just need to stay focused on my game and trust myself as I have done really well so far.
“I would love to play with Robert over the weekend. It would be the perfect situation as there will be lots of people watching us – and I enjoy playing in that environment.”
Alongside Oriol and Senior – who made two birdies and six eagles en route to a stunning 63 – in the final group out tomorrow will be former European Number One Karlsson.
The 11-time European Tour winner carded a seven under par 65 in front a jubilant local crowd – and admitted it was his best score at his home course.
Only two Scots - Jack McDonald on 140 (68-72) and Ross Kellett on 141 (69-72) - made the cut. Bradley Neil missed out after a second-round after a 77 for 144 - two shots too many.

Binning, McBain and Forsyth tie for Balgownie
victory and earn £1,475 each
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
The last scheduled Grampian-Houston pro-am at Royal Aberdeen produced a three-way tie for first place between Sam Binning (Mearns Castle Golf Academy), Greg McBain (Newmachar) and Alastair Forsyth (Mearns Castle Golf Academy).
The trio each shot two-under-par 69s by different routes and earned £1,475 apiece.
It was Binning's first win of the 2017 Tartan Tour, McBain's second and Forsyth's fifth.
Binning should have an £1,850 first prize all to himself because he was four-under-par standing on the 16th tee ... and bogeyed that hole and also the 18th.
McBain too bogeyed Balgownie's testing last hole - especially when the wind is blowing - after birdieing the third, sixth, 14th and 17th.
Forsyth had an eagle 3 at the sixth and birdies at the second, fifth and short 17th.
Mark Hillson (St Andrews for Golf) finished outwith the individual prizelist with a 77 but he led the D F Communications amateur trio to victory in the pro-am team event with a best ball score of 11-under-par 60, which earned Mark £200.
His amateur partners were Craig Forsyth (11), Stuart Forsyth (15) and Jim Leighton (14).
Graeme Brown, Gavin Hay, Graham Fox and Michael Patterson, the pros associated with the next four teams - all on 61, also earned £200 each.

ROBSON WINS SENIOR SOUTH OF
SCOTLAND OPEN BY ONE SHOT
SCOTLAND OPEN BY ONE SHOT
Nick Robson (Meldrum House) won the Scottish Seniors Golfing Society's South of Scotland Open at Powfoot by one shot from Stewart Henderson (Hamilton).
Overnight leader Robson added a level par round of 71 to his opening 74 for a total of 145. Henderson shot a best of the day 70 to add to his first round of 76, for a total of 146. Third place went to Jim Graham (Lochmaben) on 151 (76, 75).
The players had to contend with heavy rain and high winds on day one, and although there was very little rain today, a strong wind made scoring very difficult.
Robson bogeyed the third, fifth and seventh but picked up birdies at the fourth, fifth and 14th for his round of 71. Henderson bogeyed the 6th and 12th, but birdies at the second, third and 14th gave him a round of 70.
Nick Robson won the Scottish Seniors Match-play Championship at Alyth two weeks ago, and today's win takes him to the top of the SSGS Order of Merit table with a 60 point lead over Graham Bell (Downfield), who was unable to play at Powfoot. Stewart Henderson moves up to third place in the table.
There was a three way tie on 147 for the bronze medal, awarded to the player with the best net total, between Jim Emslie (Royal Aberdeen) (4) (75-72), David Taylor (St Andrews New) (3) and Jim Graham (Lochmaben) (2)
The Order of Merit is sponsored by McCrea Financial Services.

NEWS RELEASE SUMMARY
Sam Connor carded a final-round 68 to win the Matchroom Sport Championship by seven shots on 20 under par on a dry and windy day at Luton Hoo Hotel, Golf and Spa in Bedfordshire.
Connor (Alsager Golf and Country Club) made this his third EuroPro title, after two wins in 2015, and led from start to finish on the final day.
Jonathan Thomson (Rotherham) and James Simpson (Close House Golf Club) came closest to challenging Connor, carding fantastic -7 and -6 final rounds respectively, both ending the tournament on -13. It wasn’t enough to stop Connor though who responded to a putting foul challenge on the 5th, which wasn’t upheld, with three consecutive birdies.
“I feel really good, it’s not really sunk in that I’ve won yet.”: said Connor, who wins £10,000 as well as a brand new Motocaddy S3 PRO electric trolley with lithium battery, Bushnell Pro X2 Range Finder and Bolle sunglasses.
On the putting incident on the 5th he said: “It wasn’t even a thought in my mind at the time. It wasn’t until Jack [Colegate] (Deangate Ridge Golf Club) told me he thought I double hit it. But it didn’t affect my mind set.”
“It was a mental test and one that I overcame in that situation, I handled it really well and focused on my game. My long game has been average this week for me but my putting and short game has been off the charts all week; it feels good to putt so well for three days.”
Connor, who bogeyed just one of his 54 holes this week, said: “It’s been coming for a while now, I’ve worked really hard and it is nice to get a bit of payback for it.”
Connor climbs to eighth on the tour rankings, from which the top five at the end of the season earn promotion to the Challenge Tour. With this win he will now receive an invite to the Challenge Tour event held at Luton Hoo Hotel, Golf & Spa.
He said: “It’s a really nice venue and I’m really looking forward to playing here again.”
Highlights of the Matchroom Sport Championship will air on Sky Sports Golf on Tuesday, August 8. The HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour continues with The Nokia Masters at Mannings Heath Golf Club, Wednesday, August 2 – Friday, August 4.

Italy’s Andrea Romano wins Carris Trophy
with play-off birdie at West Sussex
Italy’s Andrea Romano won the Carris Trophy in a play-off at West Sussex Golf Club, on a day that combined triumph, drama and disaster.
The triumph belonged to Romano after he conjured up two magnificent up-and-downs. The first was on the 18th to tie with Jean Bekirian of France on eight-under par. The second was to birdie the first play-off hole and win the English U18 boys’ open championship.
“I was really nervous,” said the 17-year-old as he relived his winning putt of around 20ft. “I can’t believe this, it’s my first international championship and I hope not the last.
“I think it will change something in my life after this. In my next tournament I think I will be more aggressive. I would like to win another tournament.”
The drama was provided by the top quality golf of the three players in the final group. Romano, Bekirian and England’s Robin Williams (Peterborough Milton) made a flying start to the final round when they all eagled the first hole.
They followed up with plenty of birdies on the front nine, notably three in a row from Williams which meant he was five-under after five holes and sharing the championship lead with his playing partners on eight under.
The 15-year-old slipped back a couple of shots as he played to the turn, but was still right in contention as he stood on the 12th tee, where the disaster unfolded.
To his enormous credit he played the remaining holes in level par and said afterwards: “My luck wasn’t with me today, but I tried my best and gave it my all – and it was just one hole that messed it up. Overall the week has been great, I handled myself well and I’m looking forward to next week and the English amateur.”
Williams’ misfortune left Romano and Bekirian, 15, to fight it out for the championship. They were both eight under as they left the 12th green but on the next the French player dropped one behind when his approach was bunkered. The combination of the bad lie and the heather-covered bank meant he had to play out wide of the pin.
However, he came straight back, holing 15ft putts for birdie on both the 14th and 16th to take a one shot lead. On the 18th his drive caught a fairway bunker and he couldn’t reach the green so the advantage swung to Romano who was perfectly positioned in the fairway. He tugged his second left and short of the green, but his perfect short game touch secured the par, while Bekirian had to settle for a bogey.
Italy also won the Nations Cup, thanks to Julien Paltrinieri, who finished third overall, and Giovanni Manzoni and Kevin Latchayya, who tied seventh. They were nine-under par, with the best two scores counting over the first two rounds, and six ahead of runners-up England.
Bekirian won the salver presented by the Hazards Golfing Society for the best U16 score, while Williams won the Malcolm Reid Salver for the best combined score in the Carris and Peter McEvoy Trophies.
The best English player was Jack Cope (The Players Club, Gloucestershire) who finished fourth on two-under and commented: “I just struggled to hole the putts but overall I’m pretty satisfied pretty happy.”
Fifth place was shared by Taylor Stote (Enmore Park, Somerset) and Williams.
Scotland's three entrants, Scottish U18 champion Eric McIntosh (Bruntsfield Links), Darren Howie (Peebles) and John Paterson (St Andrews New), all finished inside the top 20.
McIntosh had rounds of 66, 68, 68 and 71 to finished T10 on 273 - nine behind the play-off pair.
Howie (67-73-69-66) and Paterson (66-70-71-68) shared 17th place on 275.
Both McIntosh and Paterson had double bogey 6s on the final day.
Howie's 66 (32-34) included five birdies.

HUTCHEON POINTS TO PAUL LAWRIE INFLUENCE AS
HE TARGETS 5 DEER PARK MASTERS WINS IN ROW

HE TARGETS 5 DEER PARK MASTERS WINS IN ROW
By CRAIG DENNETT
Reigning Deer Park Masters champion Greig Hutcheon has named 1999 Open Champion Paul Lawrie as the biggest influence on his career as he aims to capture his fifth consecutive win at the event, his sixth overall.
Hutcheon, pictured with the trophy last year, who will battle it out as one of 50 PGA
professionals in the Tartan Tour event, worked as ‘the helper’ at Banchory Golf
Club’s professional shop at the same time Lawrie was serving as the club’s
assistant pro, and says it was Lawrie’s work ethic that really stuck out.
“I used to watch how he practised and how he worked and I
tried to copy him,” said Hutcheon. “Without that and his guidance throughout my
career, I don’t think I would have got to where I am today.
“It has helped me to have a great career in golf. I’ve
played over 100 tour events between the European Tour and Challenge Tour and
I’m still making a living playing the game I love.”
Now attached to the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre, Inchmarlo, Hutcheon’s name
is linked to Deer Park forever , thanks to his magnificent round of 63 that still
sees him holding the title of ‘course record holder’, and it’s a place he
always looks out for when the Tartan Tour fixtures calendar is announced at the
start of each year.
“When I first came to Deer Park to play in the Masters, I
had never played the course before and I didn’t even get the chance to play a
practice round,” recalls the 44-year-old.
“I went out on that first day and shot 63. I fell in love
with the course early on, although there’s only one way your scores can go
after shooting the course record [laughs].
It’s a good problem to have. It’s a great golf course with a lot of fantastic
golf holes. It deserves a whole lot more credit than it sometimes receives.”
Playing consistently well at Deer Park means Hutcheon always
arrives with confidence. While he says he’s learned ‘when to be brave and when
to be more conservative’, the Aberdeenshire native admits he isn’t heading into
this year’s event with as high expectations as in previous years.
He said: “This year has been a real struggle for me. I’ve
had this niggling left hip injury that is a result of wear and tear. I’m
44-years-old, so I’m a bit past my peak and my start to the season has been
fairly poor.
“I’m not coming into the week expecting to win, especially
with some fantastic young guys in great form out there. I’ll do my utmost to
lift that trophy once again but, if it’s not me, I think Paul O’Hara will be
the one to watch.”
The Deer Park Masters will be staged on Tuesday and Wednesday next week, August 1 and 2 with 50 PGA professionals and over 300 amateurs taking part in
the biggest pro-am event on the Tartan Tour circuit.
