an opening round of 64 at the Swedish Challenge

 

Having finished in the top 20 in four of his last five starts on the European Challenge Tour, the Spaniard sits in 15^th place

 

in the Road to Oman Rankings.

 

The 31 year old immediately went about extending that fine

 

run by making two eagles in his first four holes at

 

Katrineholms Golfklubb.

 

Back-to-back birdies at the eighth and ninth were followed by consecutive gains at the 13^th and 14^th, meaning Oriol

 

overtook clubhouse leader Erik van Rooyen at the top of the

 

leaderboard.
 

After a birdie-bogey finish to reach eight under for the day,

Oriol believes his game is in great shape – and is full of

confidence for the rest of the week.

Bradley Neil returned to his form groove, breaking 70 for the umpteenth time over the past month or two. His five-under 67 has him in joint fifth place.

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS

A birdie blitz on the back nine saw Julian Suri join Richard McEvoy at the top of the leaderboard in Germany as the first round of the Porsche European Open reached its conclusion.

Afternoon starter Suri, who is currently second in the Road to Oman Rankings on the Challenge Tour, took advantage of all four of the par fives on the back nine at Green Eagle Golf Courses as he fired five birdies in his last eight holes to get to six under par and grab a share of the lead in Hamburg.
McEvoy, who recently won the SSE Scottish Hydro Challenge, had held the outright lead for most of the day after posting a flawless 66 in the morning.
Defending champion Alexander Levy, Charl Schwartzel, Stuart Manley and Chris Paisley sit in a tie for third on five under with opening rounds of 67. 
Levy, who currently sits in 19th position in the Race to Dubai Rankings, fired five birdies in the final six holes of his first round to get to five under, while afternoon starter Paisley mixed seven birdies with two bogeys in his first round.
Craig Lee and Stephen Gallacher are in the top 10, thanks to both hitting the 68 mark.

It's that man Langer again! Senior Open leader

with a 69 at Royal Porthcawl

Some things never change!
Returning to the Royal Porthcawl links in South Wales where he won the Senior Open championship by 13 strokes in 2014, Florida-based Germany Bernhard Langer is setting the pace with a first-round, two-under-par 69.
He leads by one shot from England's Carl Mason and Argentina's Mauricio Molina.
Colin Montgomerie is one of seven players on the par-71 mark.

Hay and Dennett win PGA Super-60s

Scot John Hay, pro at Waterlooville Golf Club near Portsmouth, and his amateur partner from the same club, Rob Dennett, won the PGA Super-60s 36-hole tournament at Wollaton Vale Golf Club today.
They had better-ball rounds of 63 and 62 for a 17-under-par total of 125 which enabled them to win the title - and £1,250 for Hay - by five strokes. 
Hay turned 60 last week.

THE EUROPRO TOUR CUT AT LUTON

Only three Scots of the 16 in the starting field survived the cut in the EuroPro Tour event at Luton Hoo Hotel golf course.

Daniel Kay (Renaissance) made it with three shots to spare after rounds of 70 and 69 for 139 and, eight shots behind leader Sam Connor (67-64 for 131), he has a chance of a decent cash prize if he can get under the par of 73 again in the final round.

Paul Lawrie's nephew, Sean Lawrie, shot one of the day's lowest rounds, a seven-under 66 - an improvement of 10 strokes - to qualify for the final round on the limit mark of 142. Lawrie had an eagle 3 at the par-5 16th and birdies at the second, fifth, sixth, seventh, 12th and 18th in halves of 32-34. He bogeyed the short 15th.

The only other Scottish qualifier was Neil Fenwick (Dunbar) with a pair of 71s for 142.

NEWS RELEASE

Sam Connor commands a two-shot lead on 15-under-par ahead of the final round of the HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour’s Matchroom Sport Championship at Luton Hoo Hotel, Golf and  Spa in Bedfordshire.

 

The Alsager golfer (Alsager Golf & Country Club) carded a superb second-round 63, nine under par, to assume the top spot two shots clear of Jack Colegate (Deangate Ridge Golf Club) in second place.

 

Connor said: “I started off pretty solid but had to make some good shots in bad weather to stay in it. On my back nine I really got into a groove. I felt like I couldn’t have scored much better on those nine holes today.”

 

Carding his back nine in 30 including a fantastic eagle on the 8^th Connor is looking forward to tomorrow.

 

He said: “These guys are good and will be shooting low scores again tomorrow so it doesn’t change my mind set at all. I’ve just got to play the same way, I’m feeling confident and relaxed because I played well.”

 

Colegate carded an impressive -7 for the round to finish the second day on -13 overall, but it wasn’t enough to clinch the top spot from Connor, who ended the day with five birdies and two eagles.

 

Scott Fallon (North Middlesex) sits a shot behind Colegate on -12 for the tournament and a further two golfers in the form of Luke Johnson (King’s Lynn Golf Club), and James Ruebotham are close behind Fallon; both 11 under par heading into the final round.

 

Elsewhere, Luke Jackson (Lindrick Golf Club) eagled his last two holes of the round to make the cut at -4 for the day; and two-time winner on this year’s tour Chris Lloyd (The Kendleshire) is -9 overall.

 

A cut to the leading 51 professionals and ties has now been made, with those four under par or better proceeding to play the final round, after which the winner will take home £10,000 from a £50,000 fund.

Masters after a 73 in Norway

Cameron Gallagher (Longniddry) and Aidan O'Hagan (Old Ranfurly) shot scores of 73 and 77 respectively in the first round of the European Young Masters at Oslo Golf Club, Norway.
Home-land player Mikkel Antonsen spread-eagled the field with a brilliant round of nine-under-par 63 to lead by four strokes from Norwegian compatriot Bard Bjornevik Skogen, Conor Gough (England) and Ireland's Luke O'Neil.

French teenager tames the winds

 to lead the Carris Trophy 

 

French teenager Jean Bekirian takes a one-shot lead into tomorrow’s final round of the Carris Trophy after an exciting third round on a blustery day at West Sussex Golf Club.

The 15-year-old is six-under par after his best day yet in the English U18 boys’ open championship, carding a bogey-free round of three-under 65. “Today is moving day – and I moved,” he said.

He’s being chased by Italy’s Andrea Romano, who soared up the leaderboard with his five-under 63, the low round of the championship so far.

England’s Robin Williams (pictured) is also firmly in the mix. He joined the lead on six-under after a brilliant spell on the back nine when he had three birdies in four holes, but slipped back to three-under with dropped shots on 16 and 17.

“It was disappointing,” said the 15-year-old boy international from Peterborough Milton. “All through the front nine I knew things were going to turn out good and I was just waiting for the one thing to click. I made a good birdie on 12 and the putts started to drop.”

He added more birdies on 13 and 15, but then found trouble in the heather on 16 on his way to a double bogey and failed to get up and down for par on 17. “I didn’t really focus and stick to my game plan. I kept trying to push and make more birdies and that was my mistake,” said Williams.

However, he’ll be in the final group tomorrow and says: “I’m not far behind, anything can happen.”

In the group ahead of him, the lead changed hands between Italy’s Julien Paltrinieri, who was six-under at the start of the day, and Bekirian. Paltrinieri started well and got to eight-under, but his score slipped as he caught bunkers and missed greens in the gusting winds. He ended the day tied with Williams in a share of third place.

Bekirian, meanwhile, was drawing on the experience of playing in the wind which he gained in the recent Scottish U16 championship. “It was very good practice,” he said as he described how he learned to play a shot without spin.

It stood him in very good stead as he conjured up birdies on the first two holes and on the 15th, alongside some fighting par saves.

“This is my best day of the competition, I had three birdies and no bogeys, that’s very good. I hit a lot of greens and the chipping was very good for par.”

The round of the day came from Romano, the Italian U18 champion. He started the championship with four-under 64, dropped back in the second round with 72, but came storming back with today’s 63.

He got off to a fast start with birdies on the first two holes and reached the turn at three-under. He had another birdie on the difficult par three 12th, which he described as a bonus, and yet another on the 15th where he holed from 30ft. The tricky 16th cost him a shot after he tangled with the heather, but he had a chip-in birdie on 17 and finished with a steady par.

“I shall just be focussed tomorrow and believe in it. It’s my character, I never give up, I always believe.”

 

Two players are two-under: Italy’s Kevin Latchayya and Scotland’s Eric McIntosh; while the Netherland’s Jerry Ji is one-under. England’s Jack Cope (The Players Club, Gloucestershire) and Ben Quinney (Bearsted, Kent) are both level par.

McIntosh lying handy with one round

to go in Carris Trophy

Scottish boys match-play champion Eric McIntosh is in joint fifth position, four shots behind the French leader, Jean Bekirian, with one round to go in the English U18 boys' open amateur tournament for the Carris Trophy at West Sussex Golf Club.
McIntosh has had rounds of 66, 68 and 68 for a two-under-par total of 202 over the par-68 course.
John Paterson (St Andrews New) is sharing 21st place on 207 with scores of 66, 70 and 71.
The only other Scot in the big field, Darren Howie (Peebles), is T31 with rounds of 67, 73 and 69 for 209.

Calum Scott (13) gets first Scotland cap in boys' home internationals
 

 NEWS RELEASE FROM SCOTTISH GOLF

Calum Scott, the 13-year-old from Nairn, has been rewarded for his recent outstanding form with a call-up to the Scotland side for the boys’ home internationals.

The scratch player, who won the Global Golf Post Scottish U16 boys' championship  at Fairmont St Andrews earlier this month, will tee up in the Under-18 team event three months before his 14^th birthday - a notable achievement.

Scott, pictured, is enjoying sibling rivalry with his older brother Sandy, a European amateur team winner at men’s level last year, and is looking forward to pulling on the Scotland shirt at St Annes Old Links, Lancashire from  August 8 to 10. 

The Highlander, joined by another 13-year-old in Aidan O’Hagan (Old Ranfurly) in the Scotland boys’ team, said:
“I’m delighted to have been selected at boys’ level, having played really well over the last couple of months and winning my first national event in St Andrews.
"Playing in the boys’ home internationals has maybe come a little earlier than expected, but I can’t wait to play at this level. I like to have some friendly rivalry with Sandy and I’m enjoying my golf, playing with a lot of good pals around my age with low handicaps at Nairn. We push each other on, practising together and playing a lot.”

Sandy Scott has been selected for the Scotland men’s team for their home internationals at Moortown Golf Club, Leeds from  August 16-18, with the side also featuring Carrick Neill Scottish stroke play champion Liam Johnston (Dumfries and County) and another Walker Cup contender in Craig Howie (Peebles).

Top-ranked Scots Robert MacIntyre (Glencruitten) and Connor Syme (Drumoig) are both unavailable, having earned qualification for the US Amateur Championship at Riviera GC from August 14-20. 

For the first time this season, the winners of the Scottish men’s, women’s, boys’ and girls’ amateur championships secure automatic spots in their respective Home Internationals sides, with Hannah Darling (Broomieknowe), Greg Dalziel (Airdrie) and Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies) sealing their places.

 

The girls’ and women's home internationals both take place at Little Aston Golf Club, Sutton Coldfield in the English Midlands from August 9 to 11.  

 

The men’s side will be finalised after next week’s Scottish Amateur Championship at Prestwick with two places still available.
