Now McIlroy misses Memorial Tournament
Rory McIlroy has withdrawn from next week's Memorial Tournament, his last scheduled warm-up event for the U S Open, due to an ongoing rib injury.
McIlroy suffered the problem in the off-season after extensive practice sessions as he tried to decide on new equipment following former supplier Nike's withdrawal from the market.Scott Jamieson tied for the lead at Wentworth
but Paul Lawrie, Russell Knox miss cut
Scott Jamieson recovered from a nightmare start to his second round to claim a share of the halfway lead in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, an event he labelled the "pinnacle" of his season.
Jamieson followed a bogey on the first with a double bogey on the third, but birdied seven of the next nine holes -- including four in a row from the ninth -- to add a 70 to his opening 67.
That left the 33-year-old from Glasgow on seven-under-par 137 alongside Belgium's Thomas Pieters (68-69) and Italy's Francesco Molinari (67-70) on top of a crowded leaderboard, with Germany's Max Kieffer a shot behind after shooting a 68 for 138
Open champion Henrik Stenson (68-71), Lee Westwood (70-69), Branden Grace (68-71) and 2015 winner Byeong Hun An (70-69) are a shot further back on five under, while Masters runner-up Justin Rose eagled the last to make the cut.
Jamieson narrowly retained his card in each of the last two seasons by finishing 106th and 107th on the Race to Dubai, but can afford to focus on securing a second European Tour title after two top-four finishes in 2017.
"This would be up there with the Scottish Open," Jamieson said.
"I'm not in any of the majors this year so this is as big as it gets. This is the pinnacle of my season.
"It's huge, it's our flagship event. It would start opening up doors that have been closed for a few years. You want to challenge yourself against the world's best and we don't get to do that every week, but we do this week. Hopefully I can take a few of them down."
Speaking about his round, Jamieson added: "I'm delighted, especially with the way it started.
"My ball was plugged in a bunker on the third and I thought it would take a good shot to get it on the green. Then I didn't get up and down and at that point I would have bitten someone's hand off for around level par.
"The last thing you need to do is panic. There are birdies out there if you hit some good shots and I've been playing well. Making birdies is something I've always thrived on. That's where you get the buzz."
The £5million renovation of the West Course has helped persuade Stenson to make just his second appearance in the event since 2010, a stark contrast to Westwood's 24th visit in succession.
"It's nice to play a golf course where you've got to use your brain," said Westwood, who was second in 2000 and 2011.
"I've played patient and sensible golf and approached it a bit like a major -- playing away from certain pins, taking irons off some tees.
"It's hurting golf going to courses that are 7,600 yards, where the caddies can just hand you the driver on every hole and walk forward.
"I like the way the course is set up this week, nobody can have any excuses. The course is really fair and consistent, you don't get too many bad lies or bounces. For a few years it drove people mad.
"I've played well here in the past and had a couple of chances and just need to finish it off."
Ian Poulter labelled his putting "pathetic" despite a 69 which was a seven-shot improvement on his opening round, the 41-year-old carding 16 pars, one birdie and an eagle on the 12th to finish one over par.
That was a total matched by former Masters champion Danny Willett after a 73, while Rose and defending champion Chris Wood finished a shot further back.
Rose looked set to miss the cut after shanking a fairway bunker shot out of bounds on the sixth to run up a quadruple-bogey, but produced a grandstand finish with an eagle from 10 feet on the par-five 18th

Six Scots make the cut in Czech Challenge, but Craig Lawrie, McDonald and Forrest fail
EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Tapio Pulkkanen and Julian Suri, two of the in-form players on the 2017 Road to Oman, continued to shine at the D+D REAL Czech Challenge today, each shooting second rounds of 65 to share the halfway lead on 12 under par.
Six Scots beat the cut which fell at three-under-par 141 with Bradley Neil, Ross Kellett and Jack Doherty making it through to the weekend with nothing to spare. But there was disappointment for Jack McDonald, Grant Forrest and Craig Lawrie who missed the cut. Peter Whiteford shot the day's lowest score of 64 and is T9 on 136 - four off the pace
Near-perfect scoring conditions at Golf and Spa Kunětická Hora made for a feast of birdies on Day Two, with Pulkkanen making seven in a bogey-free round and Suri mixing one dropped shot with eight gains as they both improved on their opening 67s.
Suri spoke before the tournament of the confidence he had found in his game and the American, currently second in the Rankings, vowed to remain on the attack over the weekend.
“I feel good with my swing and I’m playing well so there’s no reason to doubt it,” said the 26 year old.
“You just hit your shots and today the wind was down so it was definitely more accessible, especially the whole back nine
“I don’t have a whole lot of lay-up in me so there’s going to be a lot of drivers and just keep pulling the trigger – me and my friends back at home have this motto of ‘shoot or shoot,’ it’s a basketball analogy, so I’m just going to keep on shooting.
“I’m an aggressive player and I’m confident in what I can do so I’m not going to back off from that. Any course really suits you when you’re playing well, you’ve just got to hit the shots and that’s usually all it boils down to – hopefully I can keep doing that this weekend.
“Once I’m out there on course I do look, but I know that if I execute the way I want to I can birdie just about any hole out here, so the leaderboard isn’t that much of a worry.”
The man from Florida was playing alongside Ireland’s Gary Hurley who played some scintillating golf of his own, also carding a 65 to move to ten under par and into a share of fourth place.

South Africa’s McClatchie leads the Brabazon
from Craig Ross and Jack Singh Brar
|
South Africa’s Kyle McClatchie scythed through the jostling for top spot at the Brabazon Trophy with a record-equalling 66 at Woodhall Spa Golf Club, giving him the halfway lead on 10-under par.
Joint second are Craig Ross (Kirkhill) and England's Jack Singh Brar.McClatchie was three-under yesterday and seven-under today, having holed a pitching wedge for an eagle two on the outward half, added another eagle on the back nine and also collected six birdies as his putter grew steadily hotter.
McClatchie (pictured top) will celebrate his 20th birthday on Sunday and he hopes he’s putting himself on course to a very special present, but he quickly says: “It’s still early, but this is a good position for the last two rounds.”
He heads a highly competitive field in the English men’s open amateur stroke play championship.
England’s Jack Singh Brar (Remedy Oak) and Scotland’s Craig Ross are snapping at his heels on nine-under, while another Scot, world number six Robert McIntyre, is a further stroke back.
English amateur champion Dan Brown (Masham) shot 68 today to get to six-under and move into the top five. Behind him, there’s another nine Englishmen among the top 11 and ties, including fellow internationals Alfie Plant (Sundridge Park), Jake Burnage (Saunton), Sean Towndrow (Southport & Ainsdale) and Gian-Marco Petrozzi (Trentham), and the overnight leader Todd Clements (Braintree).
While the sun shone brightly again, the general consensus was that today’s breeze made conditions tougher, especially when coupled with firm, fast greens. But it certainly didn’t stop some serious tilting at the top.
Ross, the 2016 South African amateur champion, was another very low scorer with his second round of six-under 67. It hadn’t looked so promising when he was two over after three holes, but a run of five birdies from the fifth changed all that. “When I holed on five it got things back on track and then I just started to roll in some putts.“This course is all about getting the tee shots right and I just tried to keep giving myself chances and see what happened.”
Singh Brar, who is looking for a double after his Lytham Trophy win earlier this season, moved to join Ross over the closing holes. He was level par after 12, then birdied 14, 15 and 18. “I played really nicely, probably better on the front nine than yesterday, I just didn’t hop on the birdie train, or only for a couple of stops,” he joked, referring to yesterday’s 67. “I’m in the hunt and it’s nice to be headed for the weekend.”
Ominously, MacIntyre made progress while reporting a struggling day. “It was a lot different for me,” he remarked after adding 70 to his opening 68.
“It was playing tougher because of the wind and I felt the greens were a bit firmer and faster. I just kept holing 6ft return putts and I scraped my way in there. I hit probably 14 greens today and struggled a bit to judge the swirling wind.” Nevertheless he dropped just one shot and amassed two birdies and an eagle.
“I hit the ball a lot better off the tee today and I was really solid on the back nine where there’s a few flags you don’t want to miss on the wrong side,” said Brown. “It all feels good and I couldn’t ask for much more really, having had a few days off with injury.”
After today’s round the field was cut to the top 60 players and ties who managed scores of four-over and better, with a total of 63 competitors going forward to the final 36 holes this weekend.
Among those who avoided the drop was world number eight Connor Syme.
The Scot couldn’t find a birdie on the first day when he scored five-over 78. Today, he set himself a target of three-under, but was two over after three holes. He finally got a birdie on the 6th and promptly holed a 145-yard pitching wedge at the seventh for an eagle two. Three more birdies and a bogey followed and he exactly met his target, finishing the 36 holes on two-over.
“There are positive signs, I’m playing well and now I’ll be trying to get myself in contention over the next two rounds,” he said.
Less fortunate was Ben Chamberlain of Wales, who missed out by one shot, despite a hole in one on the 5th – the fifth of the championship on the hole. It was Chamberlain’s sixth ace, four of which have been in competition.

McDowell has a 66 on US PGA Tour
FROM SKY SPORTS.COM
Colonial debutant Graeme McDowell carded a four-under-par 66 to trail the leaders by one stroke after the first round at the US PGA Tour's Dean and DeLuca Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas on Thursday.
Americans Kelly Kraft, J.T. Poston and Derek Fathauer lead on 65, but most of the big names made acceptable starts at Colonial Country Club, with Jon Rahm shooting 66, Phil Mickelson 67, Sergio Garcia 69 and Jordan Spieth 70.Northern Ireland's McDowell has always missed the tournament because it invariably clashes with the European Tour's PGA Championship at Wentworth.
But he kept hearing from other players that his game would be suited to the Colonial Country Club that favours shotmakers rather than long hitters, and with no Ryder Cup this year, he decided it was the perfect time to find out.
"It's a real classic old-school golf course," the 2010 US Open champion, McDowell, told PGATour.com after taking advantage of his morning tee time to notch four birdies.
