Steven Stewart first-round leader in Leven

Gold Medal with a five-under 66

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Steven Stewart (Clydebank and District) set the pace in the 72-hole Leven Gold Medal tournament with a first-round, five-under-par 67.
That edged him one stroke ahead of three players - Kieran Cantley (Liberton), Anus Carrick (Douglas Park) and Euan McIntosh (Turnhouse).
Stewart had seven birdies on his card with halves of 33 (one under par) and 33 (four under par).
His gains came at the third, short seventh, 11th, par-5 12th, 14th, short 15th and 17th. He bogeyed the eighth and the 18th.
Cantley also had seven birdies in halves of 31 and 36. He had his bag of birdies between the third and 14th.
Carrick had an eagle 3 at the sixth but gave the two-shot gain back by bogeying the eighth and ninth. He had six birdies in a bogey-free inward half of 31.
McIntosh's only bogey came at the 15th in his halves of 31 and 36.
Leven Gold Medal, or to give it is "proper" title, the Amateur Golf Medal, is the oldest amateur stroke-play tournament in the world of golf.
The tournament, organised by the Leven Golfing Society over the Leven links in Fife, was first played in 1870 and its winners included Lee Westwood in 1993 and Andrew Coltart in 1989.
