Thanks to a late surge, Scott Piercy can still find his name at the top in Napa, California. With a mid-day rain delay that went on for nearly three hours,
second-round play didn’t finish Friday at the Safeway Open. But that
didn’t faze Piercy.
The 37-year-old lost his two-shot lead as he got into his round in
the late afternoon at Silverado Resort and Spa’s North Course but then
seized it back, by pitching in for eagle at the par-5 ninth and
following up with a birdie at the par-4 10th.
Suddenly he had surged back to 14 under and two ahead, and after two
more pars darkness descended. With play suspended at 6:21 p.m. local
(Pacific) time, Piercy was left with six holes in his round, but he
retains a two-shot lead.
Of course, he’s likely on the hook for more than 36 holes over the
weekend. Piercy will resume his second round, as will all competitors
yet to finish Friday, at 7:45 a.m. local time Saturday.
Joining him in the early Saturday rise will be Johnson Wagner, who
grabbed the lead from Piercy with four front-nine birdies and added
another at No. 11 to move to 12 under, but was steamrolled as he made
three straight pars from there before having to go in due to darkness. Paul Casey, who finished the 2015-16 season in the USA with two runners-up and a
fourth, continued his hot streak with an opening 8-under 64 and five
birdies in 12 holes Friday as he ended the day 11 under (solo third)
with six to play.
Among those who made it to the clubhouse, Bill Haas leads the way at 8
under and Phil Mickelson is not far behind. The left-hander finds
himself in a tie for 10th overall at 6 under after a second straight 69.
Defending champion Emiliano Grillo completed 36 holes in 5 under and
is T-19 entering Saturday. After a disastrous Day One, Justin Thomas has
rebounded with a 4-under score through 12 holes. At 1 under overall, he
is one off the projected cut line with six holes to play.
Piercy, who opened in 10-under 62 Thursday for a two-shot lead,
actually missed the cut at this event last year. He’s going for his
fourth career US PGA Tour victory. SCOREBOARD
