In the midst of his third straight consecutive round of solid golf,
Johnson Wagner moved into the lead at the US PGA Tour's Safeway Open as the third
round was suspended due to rain.
Round three at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, California will resume at 7:40 a.m. local time Sunday.
Wagner moved into a one-shot lead over Patton Kizzire and 36-hole
leader Scott Piercy after a birdie at No. 12 got him to 15 under
overall.
Kizzire got off to a hot start in his round, making five birdies in
his first eight holes to vault up the leaderboard. He cooled off after
making the turn and posted just one birdie and one bogey on the back
before rain ended his round with Kizzire on the 17th hole.
Piercy, who scorched Silverado for a course-record 62 and then posted
a second-round 67, never got it going Saturday. He managed just one
birdie and one bogey, sitting at 1 over through 15 holes for his round
before the rain came. Piercy was one of just two players in the top 15
to be over par in his third round.
Wagner is looking for his fourth PGA Tour victory, but his first since the Sony Open in Hawaii.
Phil Mickelson posted a 3-under 69 for the third straight day and
kept himself within striking distance at 9 under, six shots off the
lead. Justin Thomas is also at 9 under after shooting a 6-under 66 in
his third round to share 10th with five other players. Paul Casey is in fourth, two shots off the lead, and was 1 under through 15 holes Saturday. Scotland's Martin Laird is lying fifth, 12 under par overall. He has played 16 holes of his third round.
