Aberdeenshire start county finals with a win
over title rivals Midlothian
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Hosts Aberdeenshire took a big step towards winning the Scottish women's county championship on home turf at Aboyne when they came from behind to beat Midlothian, on paper their strongest rivals, 5.5-3.5 on the opening day.
In the other tie, Dumfries-shire, inspired by +2 player Gemma Batty (Moffat) beat Dunbartonshire and Argyll 7-2.
Midlothian took the foursomes 2-1 but Aberdeenshire, even without the services of Shannon McWilliam (Aboyne) and Rachel Polson (Kemnay) made up the deficit by winning the singles 4.5-1.5.
Sammy Leslie, Carol Wilson, Donna Pocock and Jasmine Mackintosh were afternoon winners for Aberdeenshire who face Dumfries-shire on Saturday.
English-born student Gemma, whose ambition is to play for Scotland through residential qualification, won both her foursomes (in partnership with Jordana Graham) and her singles.
Dumfriesshire shaded the foursomes 2-1, then took the singles 5-1.
