Syme lying 5th but Irish eyes are smiling

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Drumoig's Connor Syme has done well to be in fifth place with a round to go in the Irish men's open amateur golf championship at Royal Dublin Golf Club.
But the leading Scot has seven shots to make up on the long-time Irish leader, Colm Campbell (Warrenpoint), if he is to follow in the footsteps of Jamie Savage as a winner of this prestigious tournament.
Syme has had rounds of 74, 68 and 67 for seven-under-par 209, which is good scoring but a long way behind Campbell's 68, 68 and 66 for 14-under 202.
Another Irishman, Jack Hume (Naas) is lying second, two off the pace on 204, after rounds of 67, 72 and 65.
