Feeling comfortable, Jordan Spieth continues
stellar play at Dean and DeLuca Invitational
“I feel very comfortable over the ball this week,” said Spieth, who followed an opening 3-under 67 with a second-round 66 on Friday at Colonial Country Club.
At seven under through 36 holes, Spieth was one off of Webb Simpson’s clubhouse lead when he wrapped up play. (Bryce Molder, though, had just started his round and was one of several players who will return early Saturday morning local time to finish his first round. On the par scoreboard, Molder leads and Spieth is tied third, two behind him.
Spieth actually called Thursday’s round in tougher conditions a better performance, but his follow-up on Friday was still impressive.
He recovered nicely from a three-putt bogey on his first hole, the par-4 10th, making birdies at Nos. 11 and 13 before turning in even-par 35.
On the front side, Spieth came alive as he adjusted to the speed of the greens. He birdies Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 5 as part of an inward 4-under 31. Two of those birdie putts came from outside of 14 feet, including one from 20 feet at the par-4 second hole.
“Stress-free again,” Spieth said of his round. “I mean, I think I hit 18 greens today. … At No. 18, I was on the fringe, and No. 3 I think I was on the fringe, but those are putts. I mean, that’s good ball-striking as statistically anybody can do.”
Spieth closed the Nelson in 4-over 74 last Sunday to go from the final pairing of the final round to a T-18 finish.
He had missed the cut at The Players the previous week, too. All of that was after his final-round collapse at the Masters.
But Spieth said he felt “locked in” on the range Friday and it appears the World No. 2 is returning to his elite form.
“I’d say it’s up there close to if I want to have it 100-percent trust by major time, it’s creeping up,” Spieth said of his comfort level with his swing. “Big step up from last week. It’s getting close.”
