STAGE SET FOR EXCITING SUNDAY FINISH TO MAJOR CHAMPIONSHIP

RORY McILROY STILL LEADS BUT JUST

AHEAD OF THE PACK AT US PGA
    • FROM THE US PGA TOUR WEBSITE

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky -- Bernd Wiesberger quickly did the maths.
Just over 8 million people, roughly the population of New York City, live in Austria, where he was born, and about 100,000 of those play golf. So Wiesberger figures there will be about 90,000 people pulling for him on Sunday when he plays with Rory McIlroy in the final pairing of the final round of the 96th US PGA Championship.
The interest level worldwide, though, is sure to be a lot higher, given the calibre of the leaderboard and the closeness of the competition.
McIlroy, who is bidding to win his second straight major, only tops Wiesberger by one at 13 under, and another 16 players will begin the final 18 holes at Valhalla within six strokes of the lead.
That cast includes Rickie Fowler, who tied for second at the last two majors and fifth at the Masters, and his good buddy, Phil Mickelson, a five-time major champion, playing with the colorful millennial in the penultimate group. Fowler is alone at 11 under while Mickelson another stroke back, tied with one more of the game's rising stars in Australia's Jason Day.
It's a far cry from the last two times the game's best players convened to determine a major champion. McIlroy took at six-stroke lead into the final round at Royal Liverpool and Martin Kaymer was five ahead at Pinehurst No. 2 in the U.S. Open in June..

"I would say that leaderboard is the most jam-packed it's been, maybe since the start of the final round at the Masters," Fowler said. "This one's out there for the taking, for sure.
"Anyone can go out and post a number tomorrow. With the way the golf course is playing, it's not out of the question that someone can go shoot 8 or 9 under; being five, six, seven shots back, post early and you never know what can happen.
"It's wide open and someone is going to have to play some good, solid golf tomorrow to win."
You can be certain McIlroy will. Even on Saturday, the world No. 1 managed to shoot his second straight 67 without "really having some of my best stuff," and he responded to Wiesberger's brief challenge on the back nine with three birdies in his last four holes.
Valhalla, which is hosting the PGA this week for the third time since 1996, will certainly have a say in Sunday's outcome. But not necessarily in the way many majors are decided with the course yielding birdies grudgingly and distributing bogeys, doubles and others with apparent delight.
The Jack Nicklaus design may have a sub-air system under the lush Kentucky bluegrass but the fact remains that the course has absorbed several heavy downpours over the last 48 hours and it's soft. The cumulative scoring average is less than a stroke above par, and you can bet the contenders will be in full attack mode on Sunday when there is a 60 percent chance of rain.
"You don't get that opportunity every time you play a major," said former Open champion Louis Oosthuizen, who is tied at 9 under. "It should be fun."
But no matter what McIlroy's lead is -- or even if he's trailing, as he was by three last week when he overtook Sergio Garcia to win the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational -- the 25-year-old is supremely confident right now. He's already won three legs of the career Grand Slam by a combined total of 18 strokes.
"The guys got pretty close to me at The Open Championship," McIlroy said. "They got close to me again today, and I was able to respond like I did on the back nine.
"It's not the biggest lead I've ever had, but I'm still in control of this golf tournament and it's a great position to be in going into tomorrow."

HIGHLANDER KYLE GODSMAN IS LYING SECOND, A SHOT OFF PACE

BARRY HUME LEADS INTO LAST TWO

ROUNDS OF LEVEN GOLD MEDAL

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Reinstated amateur Barry Hume (Haggs Castle) leads this weekend's SGU 72-hole Order of merit event, the Leven Gold Medal, at the halfway stage.
With rounds of 72 and 68 for two-under-par 140, the Haggs Castle man, pictured right, a former Scottish amateur champion who had a short lean spell in the pro ranks, leads by one shot from Kyle Godsman, who has recently completed four years on the US college golf circuit as a student at the University of South Carolina-Aiken.
Hopeman-based member of Lossiemouth's Moray Golf Club, Godsman (pictured left) has had rounds of 72 and 69.
It's deja vu for Hume who showed good form last week in reaching the semi-finals of the Scottish amateur championship at Downfield, having won the title at his peak as an amateur in 2001. And since then he has won the Bothwell Castle Quaich Open with a six-under-par total over 36 holes.
No doubt that Barry has the experience, the ability and  temperament to stay in front over Sunday's final two rounds. He's done it all before  - unless one of his challengers puts together two sub-70 scores over the second half of the tournament.
With most of the Scottish stars otherwise engaged in the last day of the Euroepan amateur championship at The Duke's, St Andrews, Hume must be a hot favourite to score his first Order of merit tournament win in his second coming as an amateur.
The cut fell at 12-over-par 154

NORWEGIAN CHALLENGE REPORT AND SCORES

CAN HEBERT HOLD ON TO THE LEAD

THIS WEEKEND?

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
For the second week running, Benjamin Hebert will enter the final day of a Challenge Tour event as the man to catch after the Frenchman overtook long-time leader Florian Fritsch on the third day of the Norwegian Challenge.

Fritsch had a day to forget on the greens as he slumped to a one over par round of 73, but Hebert’s serene progress continued with a 69 for a 15 under par aggregate total.
Having also led by three strokes after three rounds of last week’s Azerbaijan Golf Challenge Open, Hebert (pictured above) now finds himself in an identical position on the eve of the final day of the €175,000 event at Miklagard Golf Club.
But the 27 year old from Brive, who already has three Challenge Tour titles to his name, is hopeful of learning from the mistakes he made in Quba seven days ago, when the title slipped from his grasp after a closing round of 76.
In a bid to ensure that history does not repeat itself, Hebert will pick up the phone and formulate a strategy with his coach Olivier Leglise, who also coaches his compatriots Grégory Bourdy and Romain Wattel.
Hebert said: “I called Olivier on Monday and we talked about where it went wrong for me last week. So I will definitely call him tonight and talk about my strategy for tomorrow.

"Last Saturday I probably thought about it too much, but tonight I will try to get a good rest and then come out in the morning ready to go from the start.
“I will continue to be aggressive, that’s for sure. I got off to a slow start last week and never really recovered, but this time hopefully it will be different. The key here is to find the fairways off the tee – if I can do that, I should be OK. I’m putting very well so if I can make some birdie chances, I feel confident of taking them.”
In contrast, Fritsch struggled to judge the pace of the greens on a frustrating day for the German, who already has three runner-up finishes to his name.Fritsch made five bogeys, due largely to a putter which turned distinctly cold on a breezy day in Kløfta, on the outskirts of the Norwegian capital Oslo.
The Munich native said: “I actually played pretty well and was reasonably happy with the way I struck the ball, but just putted extremely poorly. I made four or five three-putts and didn’t make enough birdie putts, which tells the story of the round.

"Probably 80 per cent of my game was working well, but that 20 per cent makes all the difference.
“I was leaving almost every putt short, which was so frustrating because I had the pace of the greens perfectly for the first two days. But I won’t be spending any time on the practice green tonight, I just hope I can get my speed back tomorrow.”

ENGLISHMAN MAKES HISTORY WITH VICTORY AT THE DUKE'S

CHESTERS SCORES REPEAT WIN IN

EUROPEAN AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE SGU

Shropshire's Ashley Chesters today became the first player to claim back-to-back International European Amateur Championship titles – and with it the chance of a return trip to The Open Championship.

The 24-year-old Hawkstone Park Golf Club member, who was the first English player to win the European title since 2004 when he triumphed at El Prat in Spain 12 months ago, held his nerve to retain the crown, this time over the breezy Duke’s Course near  St Andrews.

Having triumphed in the All Square Golf-sponsored event, Chesters now has the opportunity to return to the ‘Home of Golf’ and line up among the game’s greats once more at next year’s Open over The Old Course.
Chesters has already tasted the experience of the world’s oldest Major Championship, having played at Royal Liverpool last month.

Chesters, though, has a decision to make as he has been thinking of a move into the professional ranks and intended to go to Qualifying School next month.
“I’m going to have to have a think,” said Chesters. “The Open at St Andrews would be hard to turn down, and it’s one of my favourite courses. I enjoyed Hoylake so much, as The Open is special. I’ve had worse problems (to think about).”

First played for in 1986 and won in the past by such stellar names as current Open champion Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia, Stephen Gallacher and Victor Dubuisson, Chesters has now gone one better in winning the European Amateur for a second time.

Among the 18 groups who returned early on Saturday morning to complete their third rounds after yesterday’s weather delay due to torrential rain, thunder and lightning, Chesters finished his remaining 12 holes and posted a fine two-under-par 69 to hit the front on three under par after 54 holes in Fife, securing a three-stroke lead.

On a pleasant final afternoon – despite gusts of wind that reached 30 mph at times – Chesters produced a steady closing round, holding off the challenge of German Max Roehrig, Gary Hurley from Ireland and Italian Enrico Di Nitto.

Chesters “hardly hit a bad shot” over the opening 16 holes of his final round, securing a five-shot lead with two holes to play, thanks to birdies at the 15th and 16th.
However, he four-putted the par-3 17th for a double bogey, before making bogey on the last to see his winning margin cut to three. On a demanding final day, he played 30 holes in total.

Chesters posted a two-under-par winning total of 282, the only player to finish under par, three ahead of Roehrig and Hurley on one over par, with Di Nitto fourth on two over,

Craigie Hill’s Daniel Young finished as the leading home player on six over par in a share of 15th spot.

England international Chesters, who represents Hawkstone Park Golf Club, added: “I played well all day, until those last two holes, but I knew I had some shots in hand, thankfully. There are a lot of good names on the trophy and to have won it twice is amazing.”
