Northern Counties Cup report and all the Tain results

Strathpeffer minnows upset
big fish Murcar Links

By ROBIN WILSON
Defending champions Nairn brushed Elgin's first team aside on the first day of the Northern Counties Cup at Tain Golf Club while the second team of minnows from Strathpeffer Spa caused the biggest upset defeating the Murcar Links first squad in the first round.
Newcomers to the Nairn first team, Fraser Fotheringham and Neil Howitt, were two-hole winners over Elgin's Andrew Rollo and Derek Ramsay while previous winners of three golf medals in the past 10 years, Neil Hampton and Robert Smith, now playing as second couple in the team competition, were six-hole winners over Elgin's two Steven Milne's.
The other Nairn winners from last year Alec Scott and Steven MacDonald, now playing first couple in the second team, find themselves facing their old team mates this morning in the third round when with Gordon Morrison and Peter Saggers they beat Inchmarlo and Nigg Bay (2).
Hosts Tain escaped a second round exit in extra holes against Peterhead. Local first couple club champion Munro Ferries and partner James Cameron were three-hole losers to Peterhead's Darren Watson and Ian Forman while second couple Billy Ferries and Peter Renwick levelled the tie with a three hole win over Garry Forman and George Cordiner.
Ferries and Cameron birdied the second extra hole of sudden death to take the club through after Renwick and B. Ferries escaped a half at the 20th from playing out of a lateral hazard.
First Couple Michael McNab were Strathpeffer's shock one hole winners over Cruden Bay's Anthony Bews and Ian Galbraith with the second string couple of greenkeeper Michael Wilson and senior club member Philip Bannerman holding Chas Mcken and K. Nelson.
Royal Aberdeen's strong first team pairings of Mark Halliday and Bill Barclay and Allan Reith and Steven Buchan both won by two holes in the Aberdeen derby game against Deeside.
