RECORD DESPITE A DOUBLE-BOGEY

Craig Lee equalled the Murrayfield course record with a seven-under-par round of 63 in the Bell Lawrie/Murrayfield Golf Club pro-am today.
Lee came to the par-5 last needing a birdie to beat the record but had to be content with a par figure.
Amazingly, his scorecard included a double-bogey at the sixth where he lost a ball.
He had nine birdies in all - at the first, second, fourth, seventh, eighth, 12th,14th, 15th and 16th in halves of 31 (three under par) and 32 (four under par).

Saggers had the halfway lead after a super outward half of 31. More birdies followed before the the 15th and 16th holes cost him the championship. A visit to the pond at the short 16th was followed by two lost balls at the next holes to drop seven shots against the par of 3-4

MEN'S HOME INTERNATIONALS

SCOTLAND RETAIN RAYMOND TROPHY
BY BEATING ENGLAND 10-5
Scotland have retained the Raymond Trophy as winners of the men’s home amateur international matches at Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club in South Wales.
It is the first time the Scots have won the title two years in a row since the 1981-82.
They beat England far more easily than was anticipated – 10-5 after taking a 2pt lead in the foursomes.
England had lost the foursomes in their first two matches with Wales and then Ireland – and come back strongly in the singles for overall victory.
But Scotland’s strength in depth meant there was no weak tail for the English to mop up on the third day.
Richie Ramsay, promoted to the lead-off singles, responded with a 3 and 1 win over Ross McGowan after being two down at the turn.
Scott Jamieson, one up after nine, lost by 2 and 1 to the Walker Cup youngster Oliver Fisher.
Glenn Campbell, the most successful player for Scotland over the three days, beat Jamie Moul by 1 hole after being square at the turn.
Lloyd Saltman, “batting” No. 4, won by 2 and 1 over Gary Wolstenholme who lost two of the first three holes.
Scottish match-play champion Kevin McAlpine lost by 3 and 2 to Walker Cup player Robert Dinwiddie 3 and 2.
Scott Henry, who came on to his game over the last three sessions of play, beat Ben Parker by 2 and 1 after being one up at the turn.
Keir McNicoll went down by 6 and 4 to Adam Gee who was four up at the turn.
Jonathan King, who had not been having the best of home series, came good in the end when his country needed him. He beat Paul Waring by one hole after being two down on the seventh tee.
John Gallagher, the third most successful Scots player during the week, halved with Gary Boyd after being four up on the seventh tee.
George Murray, a great man to have in the tailgunner’s position, won by two holes against Ed Richardson.
Wales beat Ireland 8-7 to relegate the Irish to the bottom rung of the final table.
Scottish skipper George Crawford was, understandably, elated in his post-match comments.
“I always felt we could do it,” he said. “I was confident but there is always a premium on putting. You also need a little luck and we got the breaks at times, especially against Ireland. But this is a great boost for Scottish golf on the back of Richie Ramsay’s win in the US Amateur.”

EUROPEAN SENIOR MASTERS

SAM HAS A NIGHTMARE START AT WOBURN
Pre-tournament favourites Sam Torrance and Mark James face a massive salvage job after finishing the first round of the European Senior Masters at Woburn on a combined total of nine over par.
James, who beat Torrance in a play-off to win this event last year, had just one birdie in an opening round of four over par 76 to end the day 10 shots off the lead held by Spain's José Rivero, who had a brilliant 66.
Faring even worse was Torrance, the European Seniors Tour No. 1, who faces a massive challenge following a 77 that contained five birdies, four bogeys and three double-bogeys.
James said: "If I don't shoot 66 or better tomorrow then I am toast and I'd say Sam is in the same position. I can't believe the pair of us scored like we did: you would have thought that one of us could have ground out a level par round."
Torrance has made a habit of starting slow this year, but it has not prevented him from winning four times - and twice in the past two weeks.
"Everything went wrong today. I seem to like setting myself even bigger challenges," said Torrance in reference to starting with a 76 at last week's Charles Church Scottish Seniors Open and then coming through to win by one.
The Scot's troubles today started when he blocked his first tee shot into the trees and made bogey. Worse was to follow at the next. After flying his seven-iron approach over the green, Torrance was faced with an atrocious lie and in trying to move a nearby twig, his ball moved and he was penalised a stroke before going on to make a double-bogey 6.
Sam never recovered from this horror start and eventually signed for a five over par 77, which leaves him languishing in 58th place in a field of 73 golfers.
Lenzie's Mike Miller, who followed up his third place finish in the Charles Church Scottish Seniors Open at Dalmahoy with a round of 73, shares the honour of being the leading Scot with Eyemouth's Craig Maltman.

- BUT WE DON'T THINK IT'S ALL OVER !

Scotland took a 3 ½-1 ½ lead over England in the morning foursomes in the title-deciding clash on the third day of the men’s home amateur international matches at Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club, South Wales.
But let’s not be too hasty in thinking that means Scotland are home and dry as winners of the Raymond Trophy for the second year in a row.
England have lost the foursomes to Wales and Ireland on the first two days and come through to win the matches by making up the leeway in the singles.
Scotland’s winning pairings were Richie Ramsay and Scott Jamieson (by 2 and 1 over Moul and McGowan); John Gallagher and Keir McNicoll (by 3 and 1 over Lewton and Parker) and Kevin McAlpine and Scott Henry ( by 4 and 3 over Richardson and Boyd).
Ireland lead Wales 3-2 after their foursomes.
