of World Amateur Rankings

Scotland can be proud of their world and European team championship status but the R&A World Amateur Golf Rankings suggest that the balance of power in the UK amateur game has shifted England's way.
England and Scotland don't have a top 10 player, but the English do have Stiggy Hodgson (14), Matt Haines (15), Chris Paisley (20), Tommy Fleetwood (22), Darren Renwick (23) and Jamie Abbott (31) rated ahead of the leading Scot - Colville Park's Ross Kellett in 34th place in this week's revised rankings.
If you count Matthew Nixon (No 38), who won the British boys' title at Royal Aberdeen in 2006, there are SEVEN English amateurs ranked ahead of the only other Scot in the top 50, Arizona State University student James Byrne from Banchory. James is No 42.

Manassero new world No 1

amateur, and Kellett takes

over as top-ranked Scot

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Matteo Manassero, the 16-year-old British amateur champion from Rome, moves from No 2 to No 1 in today's updated R&A World Amateur Golf Rankings.
The other significant move, from a Scottish point of view, sees Ross Kellett (Colville Park), picture by courtesy of Tom Ward Photography, surge past James Byrne (Banchory & Arizona State University) into No 25, his highest ever position and one which makes him the leading Scot in the rankings for the first time.
Byrne remains at No 40.
The R&A WAGR is calculated on a 52-week cycle which reflects players' form and finishes over the whole year not the past week.
Thus, Manassero has not gone from No 2 to No 1 because he won an event last week. He didn't.
Similarly, American Peter Uihlein's victory in Dixie Amateur championship must have contributed to him going up to two places to No 4.
But James Byrne finished eighth in the same Dixie Amateur while Ross Kellett was not in the top 20 - but Kellett's ranking is improved by 16 places but Byrne marks time.
Do I understand this? No. Can I explain it? No.
The new top 10 rankings with the players' "movements" up or down in brackets are:
1 Matteo Manassero (Italy) (+1).
2 Victor Dubuisson (France) (-1).
3 Nick Taylor (Canada) (no change).
4 Peter Uihlein (US) (+2).
5 Morgan Hoffman (US) (no change).
6 Bud Cauley (US) (-2).
7 Matt Hill (Canada) (no change).
8 Russell Henley (US) (+1).
9 Blayne Barber (US) (-1).
10 David Chung (US) (+2).
Selected rankings:
14 Stiggy Hodgson (England) (-1).
15 Matt Haines (England) (no change).
19 Tommy Fleetwood (England) (no change).
21 Chris Paisley (England) (no change).
22 Darren Renwick (England) (no change).
25 Ross Kellett (Scotland: Colville Park) (+16).
29 Jamie Abbot (England) (-1).
Other Scottish rankings:
40 James Byrne (Banchory & Arizona State Univ) (no change).
165 Glenn Campbell (Blairgowrie) (-1).
173 Mark Hillson (Craigielaw) (-2).
202 Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck & East Tennessee State Univ) (no change).
229 James White (Lundin & Stirling Univ) (no change).
277 David Law (Hazlehead) (-3).
343 Steven McEwan (Caprington) (+42).
426 Philip McLean (Peterhead) (-2).
523 Fraser McKenna (Balmore & Southeastern Louisiana Univ) (-2).

Comment from former Walker Cup player Gavin Dear
(who almost made the top 10 during his amateur career)

Hi Colin,
The reason for Ross Kellett moving up the rankings will be the fact he now has a divisor of 83. The rankings, for some reason. have a maximum divisor of 80, roughly meaning the more you play the higher you will be.
For Ross that means his points average is 996.25. When divided by 80, it should be 960.2 (divided by 83). That would put him back in 42nd place behind James Byrne. Hopefully that clears it up, it's a rule which I don't think should be in the system, because I always felt it gave an advantage for the guys that played the most rounds, but there you go.
Cheers,
Gavin Dear

Comment from former Scotland amateur international

Bryan Fotheringham (Forres):

Hi Colin
As far as the World Amateur Golf Rankings go, not one player I have spoken to fully understands how they work. I once had a shot of trying to understand them but got lost and decided to not bother with them.
As you have pointed out guys do well one week and either don't move or go down, and on the flip side, guys do poorly, finish way down the list or miss cuts and move UP the list.
It's a baffling system and one I don't get. Guys turning pro constantly doesn't help and it needs simplifying.

Cheers

Bryan Fotheringham

Comment from R&A staff man Andy McDonald
who compiles the weekly R&A WAGR:

WAGR operates on a 52-week cycle. It is not just about current form as players' scores that are good, bad or indifferent are assessed over the 52-week period. Our web site has very good information on how WAGR operates.
Since I took over from David Moir, one thing has become clear and that is that players, coaches, etc do not fully understand how WAGR works (that is not a criticism). This I hope to address in 2010.
Best wishes for 2010.
Andy McDonald

Byrne must wait a week for Dixie Amateur placing

to work its way into R&A World Amateur Rankings

This week's R&A World Amateur Golf Rankings updating does not include the Dixie Amateur which finished on Monday (US time).
That means that Banchory's James Byrne, who finished joint eighth in a quality field, will have to wait until the Week 52 revision before he widens the gap between himself and Ross Kellett (Colville Park), the only other Scot in the world's top 100 amateurs.
Byrne goes down one place to No 40 this week with Kellett No 41, having also gone down one place.
Kellett finished three strokes behind Byrne in joint 28th place in the Dixie Amateur.
To find the third Scot in the world amateur rankings one has to go down to 164th position and former Scottish amateur champion Glenn Campbell (Blairgowrie) who has gone up seven places, as has the next Scot, Mark Hillson (Craigielaw) in 171st position.
The top 10 remains unchanged with France's Victor Dubuisson and Italian wonder teenager Matteo Manassero giving Europe a 1-2 ahead of two Canadians and six Americans who make up the top 10.
England has five players in the top 22 - Stiggy Hodgson (No 13), Matt Haines (No 15), Tommy Fleetwood (No 19), Chris Paisley (No 21) and Darren Renwick (No 22).

Scots ranked in the top 500 are:
40 James Byrne (Banchory) (-1).
41 Ross Kellett (Colville Park) (-1).
164 Glenn Campbell (Blairgowrie) (+7).
171 Mark Hillson (Craigielaw) (+7).
202 Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) (+6).
229 James White (Lundin) (+5).
274 David Law (Hazlehead) (+5).
385 Steven McEwan (Caprington) (+4).
424 Philip McLean (Peterhead) (+6).

ROSS RISES 24 PLACES BUT

BYRNE IS STILL TOP SCOT

Ross Kellett's very good performance in qualifying for the match-play as the No 4 seed and then going all the way to the final before losing in the Argentina men's open amateur golf championship has seen him rise 24 places in the R&A's latest World Amateur Golf Rankings.
The Colville Park player is now No 41 but Banchory's James Byrne, who lost earlier in the Argentina event, is still the leading Scot in the rankings in 39th place. The Arizona State University student has gone down three places.

Another Frenchman, Victor Dubuisson, is still No 1 although he failed to survive Stage 2 of the European Tour Qualifying School at the weekend. Amateur scores in professional events do not count.

James Byrne top Scot in R&A World

Amateur Rankings for first time

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Banchory's James Byrne, 20, now in his third year as a student at Arizona State University, has become the top Scot in the latest R&A World Amateur Golf Rankings for the first time - due in part to a quirk of the points allocation system.
Byrne has gone up 14 places in the re-ranking to No 42 while Ross Kellett (Colville Park), who had the honour of being the top-ranked Scot when Gavin Dear turned pro, has gone down three places to No 53.
Byrne himself explained the situation in an E-mail to me:
"The rankings run on a 52-week running total, and we are now into Week 43. Last year, during Week 43, I played in a junior college tournament in San Diego to get some competitive golf in, and I was disqualified for signing for a wrong score in the final round. I only scored 11 points.
"Since that tournament has now been pushed out of my year-long total, I have consequently moved up the rankings. In Week 44 last year, I played in a similar tournament and scored very poorly. I placed well down the field and scored just 12 points, so there will be a similar change next week too."
Latest top 10 in WAGR:
1 Nick Taylor (Can) 1311.69, 2 Matteo Manassero (Ita) 1301.52, 3 Victor Dubuisson (Fra) 1272.50, 4 Matt Hill (Can) 1192.42, 5 Morgan Hoffman (US) 1179.69, 6 Bud Cauley (US) 1177.19, 7 Russell Healey (US) 1160.00, 8 Nicol Van Wyk (SAf) 1135.71, 9 Peter Uihlein (US) 116.92, 10 Stiggy Hodgson (Eng) 1080.36.
Selected rankings:
12 Tommy Fleetwood (Eng) 1072.92, 13 Matt Haines (Eng) 1042.86, 19 Darren Renwick (Eng) 103.467, 20 Chris Paisley (Eng) 1010.20, 28 Jamie Abbott (Eng) 974.47, 29 Matthew Nixon (Eng) 97.43.
Scots in top 500 of WAGR:
42 James Byrne 938.71.
53 Ross Kellett 923.94.
156 Glenn Campbello 797.92.
174 Mark HIllson 785.25.

Former Scottish amateur stroke-play and match-play champion Kevin McAlpine (Alyth) has shot up 245 places from last week to No 442.

CANADA’S NICK TAYLOR WINS THE

MARK H McCORMACK MEDAL

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE R&A
Canada’s Nick Taylor will become the third recipient of the Mark H McCormack Medal, the award given by The R&A to the top-ranked golfer in the World Amateur Golf Ranking at the end of the amateur season and following the European and US Amateur Championships.
The 22-year-old from Abbotsford, British Columbia, has had a truly outstanding season. Taylor ascended five places to the top of the Ranking in June after heading the US Open sectional qualifying at Tumble Creek, Washington, at which the First Team All-American finished two shots clear of the largely professional field, and claimed one of the two places available.
He maintained his form in the US Open itself at the Bethpage State Park. In the process of achieving an impressive 36th-place finish – the low amateur – on Bethpage’s Black Course, Taylor shot a second-round 65, the joint-lowest score by an amateur in the Championship’s history, to make the cut in tied-seventh position.
He followed his Bethpage performance with a win at his next tournament, the Salahee Players Championship in Sammamish, Washington, before finishing runner-up at the US Public Links Championship at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Oklahoma.
Having only just completed his junior year at the University of Washington he has rewritten the school’s record book, becoming Washington’s first Pac-10 Player of the Year, registering the most collegiate victories in a single year (4), the lowest 54-hole total (198) and the lowest third-round score (63).
Taylor has topped the World Amateur Golf Ranking for 13 Weeks.
Sixteen-year-old Italian, Matteo Manassero, who this year became the youngest-ever winner of The Amateur Championship as well as becoming an Open Championship Silver Medalist, finished runner-up to Taylor as the world number two.

Two Scots within top 10 GB&I players

in new R&A World Amateur Rankings

If the selectors of the GB&I team for September's Walker Cup match at Merion Golf Club were to pick their line-up of 10 for the United States this week and rely solely on the R&A World Amateur Golf Rankings then there would be two Scots in it - Murrayshall's Gavin Dear, who is ranked No 16, and Ross Kellett (Colvile Park) who has leaped 25 places up the rankings this week to No 80 and is the 10th player from Scotland, England, Ireland or Wales in the WAGR.

Scone man 15th in this week's R&A WAGR

Gavin Dear closing in on world

top 10 ranking target

This week’s R&A World Amateur Golf Rankings show that Murrayshall’s Gavin Dear has risen to his highest position yet – 15th – and that Mark Hillson (Craigielaw) and Banchory’s James Byrne have surged up the rankings by 77 and 44 places respectively over a one-week span.
After he had won the Craigmillar Park Open in April, the 24-year-old Dear from the Perth village of Scone said that his target was to make the top 10 of the R&A WAGR for the simple reason that it would exempt him from playing in the early stages of the European Tour Qualifying School process.
Dear. pictured above by Cal Carson Golf Agency, is quite emphatic that he will turn professional in September, hopefully after playing for GB&I in the Walker Cup match that month at Merion Golf Club, USA.
“I’m nearly in my mid-20s. I can’t delay any longer in turning pro after this amateur season,” says Gavin.
Byrne, winner of back-to-back SGU Order of Merit events – the Tennant Cup and the East of Scotland Open, has gone up from 204 to 160 in the world rankings.
Hillson, the only Scot to make the last eight of the British amateur championship, has surged 77 places to No 178.
Byrne and Hillson have now risen in the Scottish rankings to third and fourth place behind Gavin Dear and Comrie’s Wallace Booth, displacing two men who are in the Scotland line-up at the European amateur team championship this week, Paul O’Hara (Colville Park) and Michael Stewart.
O’Hara is currently in 192nd position and Stewart is 240th.
There are 15 Scots in the top 500 of the R&A WAGR. You can argue both ways on that statistic. That’s a fairly good achievement for a country with a population of only five million.
The other side of the coin is that Scotland is the Home of Golf and we probably have more male amateur golfers percentage wise than a lot of bigger countries – and we should have twice as many in the top 500.
You pays your money …
The world’s top 15 amateurs, as calculated by R&A staffer David Moir who is so heavily involved in working out the weekly rankings, based on tournament returns from all over the world, that he had to cancel a guest appearance at the Scottish golf writers’ championship prizegiving meal at Fairmont St Andrews late Tuesday afternoon, are:
1 Nick Taylor ( Canada ) 1300.00.
2 Morgan Hoffman ( US ) 1243.08.
3 Matt Haill ( Canada ) 1235.19.
4 Sam Hutsby ( England ) 1147.89 (+3 from last week).
5 Matteo Manassero ( Italy ) 1146.15 (+3).
6 Nicol Van Wyk ( South Africa ) 1144.00 (+3).
7 Rickie Fowler (US) 1138.67 (+3).
8 Mike Van Sickle ( US ) 1116.39 (-2).
9 Stephan Gross ( Germany ) 1104.29 (-4).
10 Cameron Tringale (US) 1087.72 (+2).
11 Erik Flores (US) 1087.14 (+2).
12 Victor Dubuisson (France) 1056.86 (+4).
13 Matt Jaeger ( Australia ) 1051.25 (+1).
14 Brian Harman (US) 1051.02 (+1).
15 Gavin Dear ( Scotland ) 1047.37 (+2).

Other Scottish player rankings:
91 Wallace Booth (Comrie) 865.38 (+5).
105 Ross Kellett ( Colville Park ) 847.62 (-13).
160 James Byrne (Banchory) 791.94 (+44).
178 Mark Hillson (Craigielaw) 776.79 (+77).
192 Paul O’Hara ( Colville Park ) 769.23 (-2).
240 Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) 736.21 (-4).
249 Steven McEwan (Caprington) 731.65 (-4).
284 Scott Borrowman (Dollar) 706.25 (-4).
285 Glenn Campbell (Blairgowrie) 706.25 (-10).
340 James White (Lundin) 674.60 (+8).
386 Philip McLean (Peterhead) 648.10 (+17).
421 Keir McNicoll (Carnoustie) 625.33 (+35).

Gavin Dear climbs 12 places to No 16

in R&A World Amateur Golf Rankings

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Murrayshall's Gavin Dear, runner-up in the weekend Bidwells Scottish open amateur stroke-play golf championship, is getting closer to his ambition of making the top 10 in the R&A World Amateur Golf Rankings.
Because he missed the cut in last year's "Scottish," Dear's performance at Murcar Links pushed him up 12 places to 16th in the updated rankings issued this evening by R&A staff man David Moir.
"If I can make the top 10, then I can skip the early stages of the European Tour Qualifying School process," said 24-year-old Gavin who lives at Scone, Perthshire.
Tommy Fleetwood, the Lancashire 18-year-old who won the Scottish stroke-play shot up 36 places from 60th to 24th in the rankings.
Wallace Booth (Comrie) suffered the reverse effect from Dear. Wallace won the stroke play title last year so he has plummeted 21 places to No 68.
The only other Scot in the top 100 is Colville Park's consisistent player Ross Kellett who is 92nd, down seven places from last week.
Banchory's James Byrne, the Arizona State University student who tied for fourth place at Murcar Links, improved 34 places to No 292.
Those players in the top 10 rankings who have entered the Open and are not otherwise exempt gain exemption from the Regional Qualifyng and go straight into Local Final Qualifying at Glasgow Gailes, Kilmarnock Barassie or Western Gailes on July 6 and 7.

McEwan, Campbell improve

world rankings with

'Brabazon' performances

Steven McEwan's joint fourth place finish and Glen Campbell's share of 11th place at the weekend's Brabazon Trophy saw them improved their standings in today's updated R&A World Amateur Golf Rankings.

McEwan, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, has gone up by 29 places to No 101 while Campbell has made one of the biggest leaps, up 59 places to No 247. The winner, Irishman Niall Kearney, jumped 47 places to No 64.

The other "big" Irish weekend winner, Irish Open champion Shane Lowry, improved by 10 places to No 6.
The world's top 10 (code explanation: if a player has improved by one position from last week, he will have +1 after his points score, if a player has gone down one position, he will have -1 after his points score; if there is no + or -, then he will be in exactly the same position as last week).

Gavin Dear's Irish win hoists

him up to No 25 in the world

Gavin Dear's victory in the Irish open amateur stroke-play championship at the weekend promoted him 17 places in the latest R&A World Amateur Golf Rankings.
The 24-year-old Murrayshall Golf Club, Perth man from Scone is now 25th - 20 places above the only other Scot in the top 50, Comrie's Wallace Booth who finished second at Royal Dublin on Sunday.
Booth has moved up from 59th to 45th.
Dear, winner of the Craigmillar Park Open earlier in the Scottish season, would dearly like to make the top 10 of the WAGR before he turns professional in late September. Victory in the upcoming Scottish open amateur stroke-play championship at Murcar Links would be another huge step in that direction.
Booth will, of course, be defending the title he won in last year's weather-shortened 54-hole championship at The Duke's Course, St Andrews.
Apart from Dear and Booth, there is only one other Scot ranked in the world's top 100 amateurs - Ross Kellett (Colville Park) who moves up five places in the rankings to No 91 after making the final day of the "Irish."
The biggest Scottish mover in the WAGR is Troon's Michael Stewart, a first-year student at East Tennessee State University, Johnson City. His first win on the US college circuit in the Atlantic Sun Coference championship sees him improve 38 places to No 172.
On the downside, Keir McNicoll (Carnoustie), runner-up in last year's Irish open amateur stroke-play but who missed the cut at the weekend, drops 61 places to No 278. Paul O'Hara (Colville Park), winner of the recent Edward Trophy but another who was eliminated at the halfway stage at Royal Dublin, drops 64 places to No 294.

Ross Kellett and Glenn Campbell the big Scots
movers in R&A World Amateur Rankings

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
The big Scottish movers in the latest R&A World Amateur Golf Rankings are Ross Kellett (Colville Park) and Blairgowrie's Glenn Campbell.
Kellett, who finished joint 14th in the Lytham Trophy, goes up 27 places to No 95 - giving Scotland three players in the top 100. Gavin Dear (Murrayshall), who finished joint 18th in the Lytham Trophy, has dropped five places to No 42 while Wallace Booth (Comrie), joint third at Royal Lytham. has gone up 11 places to No 58.
Glenn Campbell came joint 35th in the Lytham Trophy but that was enough to push him 28 spots up the world rankings to No 305.
The biggest Scottish "faller" was Paul O'Hara (Colville Park), winner of the Edward Trophy at Glasgow Gailes the previous weekend. He missed the Lytham Trophy cut and has dropped 57 places to No 229.

James White leaps up 53 places

in R&A world amateur rankings

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Edward Trophy winner Paul O'Hara has jumped 17 places in the R&A World Amateur Golf Rankings this morning to No 172.
But Ross Kellett, long-time leader at Glasgow Gailes over the weather-hit weekend and who eventually finished third behind play-off participants O'Hara and James White, has made an even bigger leap up the rankings.
The Colville Park man is now 122nd, an improvement of 25 places in one week.
But the biggest surge by any Scot in the re-rankings is that of new Scottish universities champion and past Scottish boys' match-play champion White, pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency, who has gone up 53 places to No 323.
Well done, James! Some consolation to the Stirling University student after losing to Paul O'Hara at the second extra hole of the Edward Trophy event which was reduced to 54 holes after lightning forced the abandonment of Saturday's second round.
Would the Edward Trophy 1-2-3 have been any different over 72 holes? We'll never know.

The highest ranked British or Irish amateur is Sam Hutsby of England in the No 7 spot.

Even though he has not played competitively since his Edinburgh 72-hole open success, Gavin has dropped from No 33 last week to No 38 this week. Explanation? Five or six players have earned WAGR points in tournaments around the world and jumped ahead of the Scot.

Craigmillar Park victory lifts

Gavin Dear to 33 in rankings

Craigmillar Park Open winner Gavin Dear from Scone has improved seven places in the R&A World Amateur Rankings with his victory in the weekend 72-hole event at the Edinburgh venue. Murrayshall member Gavin is now No 33. The only other Scottish player in the top 100 is Wallace Booth (Comrie) in 60th position, a drop of three places from last week.
After his victory on Sunday, his first in a 72-hole tournament, 24-year-old Dear, pictured right, said he would be turning professional in late September but before then he had two targets.
"I want to make the Walker Cup team (for the match at Merion, Pennsylvania, September 12-13) and I want to get into the top 10 of the world amateur rankings before I leave the amateur ranks," said Dear.
"At 24, I cannot delay much longer than this year so I will be entering the European Tour School qualifying process. Even if I don't make it through that, I will still turn pro and go to some of the satellite tours in the States.
"I spent four years at Lynn University, Boca Ration in Florida so I have a lot of contacts out there. I won't stick."
This week's R&A World Amateur Golf Rankings:
1 Danny Lee (NZ), 2 Scott Arnold (Aus), 3 Jorge Campillo (Spa), 4 Stephan Gross (Ger), 5 Morgan Hoffman (US), 6 Sam Hutsby (Eng), 7 Rickie Fowler (US), 8 Reinier Saxton (Net) 9 Nick Taylor (Can), 10 Mike Van Sickle (US).
The WAGR will play an important part in the selection of the GB&I team for the Walker Cup match so we have listed all the Scottish, England, Welsh and Irish players in the top 200:
19 Shane Lowry (Ire), 23 Chris Paisley (Eng), 33 Gavin Dear (Sco), 34 Luke Goddard (Eng), 43 Tom Sherreard (Eng).
