World ranking cannot help James Byrne

get into Arizona State University team

By COLIN FARQUHARSON

James Byrne is ranked the 42nd best amateur golfer in the world - and the leading Scot - but he cannot get into the Arizona State University team of five since the 2009-2010 US college season started!
Is the 20-year-old from Banchory, who had a super summer golf season back home, worried about this state of affairs? Well, not really as he says in the following E-mail:
"I simply didn't play well enough to make the initial starting five for a tournament at Chicago, and with the Arizona State team winning the event, (and going from strength to strength), I've not really had a chance to push anyone out.
"We only play three events in the fall season though and it's been a long summer so I'm not too disheartened. I am playing in the Argentine amateur championship in three weeks' time and also the Dixie Amateur (won by Gavin Dear in 2008) in Fort Lauderdale just before Christmas.
"So I still have plenty golf to play. In the spring we have nine college tournaments, so hopefully I'll be much fresher after a good rest and I'll put some better numbers up.
"You might also like to know that my team-mate and room-mate, Scott Pinckney, who played in Scotland over the summer with me, has finished in the top eight in all three events this autumn in high-quality fields. He puts his improvement down to being able to control his trajectory better after playing in the wind and rain for two months in Scotland!"

NICKY MADDISON FINISHES 7TH IN
KANSAS DESPITE ROUND OF 86

Nicky Maddison, who has had such a good first season for Hutchinson Community College, had an uncharacteristic opening round of 14-over-par 86, which killed his hopes of winning the Kansas Junior Colleges' event at Falcon Ridge Golf Club, Lexena.
The Newcastle student, pictured right, a former winner of one of the St Andrews open summer events, was more like his old self with a 74 in the second round, equalling the best in the tournament by anyone. His total of 160 saw him gain seventh place in a field of 50, which was not a bad finish after the trials and tribulations of his first round.
Miles Christensen (Johnson County) was the winner with 77 and 74 for 151.
Major consolation for Maddison was that Hutchinson CC (632) won the team event ahead of Johnson County (637) in a field of 20.

SCOTS DOWN THE FIELD IN GEORGIA

Clayton State University, Atlanta students Neil McBride from Glasgow and Kevin Duncan from Ellon finished 87th and 88th respectively in a field of 96 for the Bobcat Invitational college event over three rounds at Cuscowilla, Eatonon in Georgia.

James Byrne slips from first

to 4th on last day at Sawgrass

Banchory's James Byrne let the chance of a first victory on the United States college circuit slide away from him over the final round of the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational at Sawgrass Country Club, Ponte Vedra Beach in Florida today.
Byrne, 20, led with a first-round 68, shared the lead after a second round 73 and dropped down to a final placing of fourth in a field of 84 with a disappointing last-day effort of five-over-par 77 over the 6955yd, par-72 course for a total of two-over 218.
Byrne never really recovered from a morale-sapping double bogey 6 at the second even though he did birdie the long fourth. Bogeys followed at the sixth and seventh before he gained his second and final birdie of the day, at the long eighth, to be out in two-over 38.
On the inward half, Byrne could not get a single birdie and had bogeys at the 11th, 12th and 14th for 39 home.
The Scot finished four shots behind the winner John Peterson (Louisiana State) who had the best final round of 70 for 214.
Although in the end it was a disappointing finish for James Byrne he was still the leading Arizona State player and he still finished three shots ahed of Newcastle's Chris Paisley (Tennessee) who is in the GB&I Walker Cup squad.
Louisiana State not only provided the individual winner they also won the team title by the commannding margin of 28 shots from runners-up Arizona State with Georgia Southern third and Georgia State foufrth. Tennessee were fifth.

Jordan Findlay is still
suffering in last place

Scots Michael Stewart from Irvine and Fraserburgh's Jordan Findlay are at opposite ends of the leaderboard after two rounds of the Bank of Tennessee @ The Ridges college tournament at The Ridges Golf & Country Club, Jonesborough, Tennessee.
Winner of the Scottish boys' match-play championship this year before he started a four-year golf scholarship at East Tennessee State University, Stewart (pictured above) is chasing his highest finish so far in his fledgling career on the American college golf circuit.
He shot four birdies, including three 2s, and only one late bogey in a second-round, three-under-par 69 over the 7147yd course for a 36-hole tally of two-under-par 142 to be sharing fourth place with England's Chris Paisley, a student at Tennessee University. Paisley has scored 72-70.
Darren Blair (North Carolina State) leads with one round to go at four-under-par 140 (71-69).
Meanwhile former British boys' champion Jordan Findlay, in his fourth and final year at East Tennessee State, is languishing in last place in a field of 75.
He had a nightmare 93 in his first round, which included par figures at only three holes, and though he did slash 10 shots off that in the second round for an 83, his 36-hole tally of 176 is a total of 32 over par. Jordan was not selected for the East Tennessee State University team for this tournament. He is playing as an individual.

ADAM LINDSAY LYING SIXTH IN MIDWEST
COLLEGIATE CHAMPIONSHIP

Banchory's Adam Lindsay, a student at Iowa Wesleyan University, will start the final two rounds of the Midwest Collegiate Conference championship in sixth place - in the spring!
It must be a unique tournament that has its first two rounds in October and its last two rounds several months later, but that's the format.
Adam had a pair of 73s for two-over-par 146 over the 6987yd, par-72 course at Finkbine Golf Club, Iowa City.
The leader is Adam White (St Ambrose) with 68 and 71 for 139.

JAMIE BLAKE'S 71 OVER PGA NATIONAL
Jamie Blake from Arbroath, a student at Post University, New York State, finished in a share of 44th place in the Nova Shark Invitational college tournament over the PGA National course at Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
The even was abbreviated by rain to two rounds and Jamie just wasn't himself with a first-round 84 but his second round of one-under-par 71 was the second lowest return of the day. To score that low over such a famous course (6,806yd from the tees they were using) was a fine achievement.
Another Post University Scot, David McGregor from Helensburgh, scored 83 and 81 for 164 and a share of 66th place.
Winner was Chris Carlin (Barry University) with 70 and 72 for 142.

JACQUELINE TOP SCORES FOR GRAND CANYON
Jacqueline Sneddon from Meigle, a student at Grand Canyon University, Arizona, top scored for her college team with scores of 78 and 80 for 158 and joint seventh place in the Sonoma State Women's Invitational tournament.
It was a tough women's course, measuring "only" 5816yd but with a par of 73. Jacqueline finished six shots behind the winner, Chelsea Helget (Sonoma State) who shot 75 and 77 for 152.
Grand Canyon University finished third in the team event, their third top-three finish of the autumn college golf season.

ROSS LEEDS MAKES TOP 20 IN TEXAS
Ross Leeds from Glenfarg, a student at Odessa College, Texas finished 18th in the Odessa College Inviational over a long course of some 7,338yd with a par of 72. Ross shot 78, 72 and 73 for a creditable seven-over-par 223 total.
Team-mate Mark Penny took the individual honours with rounds of 69, 72 and 70 for five-under-par 211.
Odessa finished second to Midland College in the team event.

Scots students go cross country to
watch last day of Ryder Cup

Scottish newcomers to the US college golf scene as students at Davis & Elkins College, West Virginia, Alasdair Forsythe from Glasgow and Calum Grant from Linlithgow made the trip across country - the United Stages is a BIG country - to watch the last day of the Ryder Cup match at Louisville, Kentucky.
"I think it was a great team bonding trip, a chance to see some outstanding play/players, electric atmosphere, amazing venue, etc," writes Scott D Goddard, Assistant Dean of Students & Head Golf Coch at Davis & Elkins, in one of his regular news latters.
For some so far unexplained reason, Calum Grant is not being allowed to play in college golf tournaments by the NCAA.
Mr Goddard refers to the situation without throwing any light on it:
"Calum Grant continues to deal with the NCAA concerning his eligibility status. Currently I’m working in concert with Mr. Shaw to get to the bottom of the issues. As soon, as we have news I will pass it along. Please keep Calum in your prayers. The NCAA is beating him up a bit," writes Mr Goddard.
Alasdair Forsythe has already played himself into the No 1 slot in the Davis & Elkins College golf team.
For their next tournament, Mr Goddard writes:
"We will be wearing Adidas polos with khaki shorts/pants on Monday and Ralph Lauren polos with khaki shorts/pants on Tuesday. I will need a little more time to ponder the line-up. I would like to see if Calum will be cleared to compete before making my decision. This is what I’m thinking currently: Alasdair Forsythe (1), Cory Dillinger (2), Bobby Dalton (3), ? (4), ? (5).
In their most recent tournament, the Hal Hansen Invitational at Clarion Oaks, Clarion, Pennsylvania, Davis & Elkins finished 13th of 18 teams behind Ohio Valley, the team winners by seven shots. Gavin Stirling from Glasgow was a member of the title-winning Ohio Valley University team.
Gavin also finished on the same joint 22nd mark as Alasdair Forsythe. Gavin scored 79 and 74 for 153 - 12 shots behind the joint winners (J C Beecroft, Ohio Valley: 70-71 & Jared Schjmader, Clarion, 74-67). Alasdair Forsythe had scores of 74 and 79.

Grant Carnie pipped in
play-off at Babson Park,
Florida by Englishman

Grant Carnie from Ellon, a junior (third-year) student at Brevard College, North Carolina, was beaten in a play-off for the 15th annual Webber Intercollegiate golf championship at Babson Park, Florida this week.
Grant, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, had tied on two-under-par 214 with Englishman Craig Isabel (Webber University) from Stanford-le-Hope after 54 holes over the par-72, 6,861yd course. Carnie had rounds of 74, 69 and 71 to Isabel's 71, 68 and 75.
Carnie could have won the title at the first extra hole. He had a birdie putt of some 15ft but missed it and the hole was halved in pars.
The Scot drove into a fairway bunker at the second extra hole and took two shots to get out of the sand but finishing up holing a 25ft putt for a bogey 5. But Craig Isabel two-putted for a winning 4.
"The playing conditions were very difficult with high winds and Grant was one of only two players to post a score under par," said Brevard College head golf coach David Nelson. "I was very proud of Grant. He seems ready to play at a very high level this year. He currently boasts a 72.6 stroke average in tournament play. That is far and away the best I've ever had here and equal to the best average in the Conference last year. I anticipate he will make the NCAA play-offs (regional and National) as an individual if he keeps this up."
Carnie's Scottish team-mates, Tom Rennie from Deeside Golf Club and Craig Galloway, East Calder, West Lothian finished 63rd and 72nd respectively with totals o 235 and 237.
Webber student Andrew Hay from Westhill came joint 36th on 227.

St Andrews boys'
open champion
Nicky Maddison
makes flying
start in America

Winner of the St Andrews boys' open championship this past summer, Nicky Maddison, 18, has made a sensational start in United States college golf.
A freshman student, alongwith Dale Middleton from Coventry, at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas, Nicky this week won Jayhawk Conference No 2 tournament, obviously the second in a series of stroke-play events arranged for the colleges/universities in the Jayhawk Conference.
It was held at Quail Ridge Golf Club at Winfield, Kansas over a 6,826yd course with a par of 72 and Nicky tied for victory at two-under-par 142 with Anders Engell (Dodge City CC). Nicky had rounds of 74 and 68, his second round including six birdies and two bogeys. Engel had a pair of 71s.
Dale Middleton came third in a field of 48 on 144 with rounds of 70 and 74.
Not surprisingly with such two high finishers, Hutchinson won the team event by a big margin of 31 strokes.
Nicky, pictured above with the Merchants' Cup as St Andrews boys' open junior champion this year, and Dale have only been there a few weeks but already Hutchinson has won team titles in two out of three tournaments. They were fifth in the other.
Nicky was Hutchinson's top scorer in two out of the three events and tied third in the other. His individual placings have been sixth, ninth and joint first.
Nicky, a member of the City of Newcastle Golf Club and Northumberland County, had a very good season before he left for the States. He is the Northumberland Under-21 match-play champion and Under-18 stroke-play title-winner. He was also junior county captain and is undefeated in any junior county match singles since first being selected three to four years ago.

Rory Hie quits US college and may
try for Euro Tour player's card

One of the leading amateurs on the US college scene, Rory Hie is not returning to the University of South Carolina after the summer holidays for the final two years of his golf scholarship.
Instead he is turning professional and has not ruled out coming over to the European Tour Qualifying School.
Ranked No 6 in the R&A World Amateur Rankings, Hie would be exempt from Stage 1 of the qualifying process.
“I just feel it is time for me to move on,” said Hie, who won the Dogwood Invitational this summer after tying for second at the NCAA West Regional and finishing T-13 at the NCAA Championship.
Although he has not turned professional yet, Hie said he would do so in the autumn and enter the US PGA Tour Q-School, where he is exempt from pre-qualifying because he made the cut last month at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational on the Nationwide Tour.
"If things don’t work out in either of those, I will probably go to Asia and play the Asian Tour,” Hie said. “I’ll just have to see what happens.”
Hie said he has not signed with an agent and is “still trying to decide whether I need one or not.”

Neil Howitt decides not to go
back to United States

Neil Howitt from Nairn has informed Davis & Elkins College, West Virginia in the United States that he has decided not to return after the summer break. Howitt had a good 2007-2008 season on the American college golf circuit.
Davis & Elkins College will have one Scot returning - Graeme Robertson, a sophomore (second year) student from Stirling.
And there will be a new Scottish face on the Davis & Elkins roster for 2008-2009. He's Alasdair Forsythe, a freshman from Glasgow.
Scott Goddard, the Davis & Elkins golf coach, is heading for Scotland next April on a talent-spotting trip. Presumably he is going to watch the 2009 Scottish boys' match-play championship.

Adam Lindsay named
to Ping NAIA
All-Region team

PRESS RELEASE FROM IOWA WESLEYAN COLLEGE
The Iowa Wesleyan College men’s golf team received yet another honor from its 2007-08 season when Adam Lindsay, a junior year student from Aberdeenshire, Scotland, was named to the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Ping NAIA All-North Region team.
Lindsay is one of just 60 NAIA golfers to make one of the all-region teams and one of 15 named to the All-North Region team. It is the second straight year IWC has placed a player on the GCAA Ping regional teams, as Jordan Crampton (Senior-London, Canada) was named to the team after the 2006-07 season.
Lindsay had a strong junior (third year) year in which he led IWC in low scoring in the fall season and finished second individually at the Midwest Collegiate Conference meet in the spring. He finished the year with a stroke average of 74.8 and posted five top 10 finishes, including the lowest round by an IWC golfer all season (66 at the William Penn Statesmen Fall Classic). He also was named to the MCC all-conference first team.
His presence on the GCAA Ping regional team made IWC one of just two MCC schools to be represented on the All-North Region team. St. Ambrose University placed four golfers on the regional team.
“‘Scottie’ has had great success while at IWC,” said Tigers Head Coach Ted Peetz. “He is well deserving of this honour, and we look forward to him having continued success in his senior year.”

Banchory's Adam Lindsay honoured with Midwest
Collegiate Conference team nomination

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY IOWA WESLEYAN COLLEGE
DES MOINES – Iowa Wesleyan College was well represented on the Midwest Collegiate Conference all-conference men’s golf team, which was released today by conference sports information director Molly Brown.
IWC placed a pair of golfers on the conference’s first team, as both Jordan Crampton (Sr.-London, Ontario) and Adam Lindsay (Jr.-Aberdeenshire, Scotland) received all-conference honors. In addition, Tiger Head Coach Ted Peetz was named the conference men’s golf Coach of the Year.
Crampton and Lindsay both tied for the IWC team lead this season with five top-10 finishes each. Lindsay led the team in the fall and for the season was the Tigers’ lowest scorer with an average of 74.8 strokes over 23 rounds. Crampton finished with an average score of 76.3 over 23 rounds.
The two also both finished high in the MCC championship tourney last month, with Lindsay placing second and Crampton tying for third. In addition to the conference award, Crampton was also honored on Thursday as a Daktronics NAIA Scholar Athlete in men’s golf.
“Adam and Jordan are very deserving of this honor,” Peetz said. “They’ve been great leaders and players for our team for a number of years. They embody what it means to be an all-conference player.”
Peetz received the honor as Coach of the Year after the Tigers capped a strong spring by finishing second at the conference meet. IWC placed no lower than third in any of its five spring meets and finished in the top four in 12 of 13 meets for the year.
The Tigers also received votes in several national polls over the season. The three votes the team received in two separate polls, including the most recent Golf World/Nike Golf NAIA poll, were the most received in the program’s history.
“This honor is a reflection of my players,” Peetz said. “This year’s group of guys was the best I’ve coached and made my job easy. I appreciate this honor and am humbled by it.”

Kevin Chappell and UCLA
claim NCAA honours

James Byrne had an early finish to his NCAA championship campaign after he and other members of the Arizona State University Golf team failed to qualify for the final day's play at the NCAA Division 1 college golf championship over the 7,450yd. Kampen course at Purdue University's Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex, Indiana.
With only the players from the top 15 teams of a starting field of 30 going through to the final day’s play, the Sun Devils, after battling strong winds, scored a total of 52 over par and were left disappointed, missing out on 15th place by three strokes and tying for 17th place with Illinois.
The all-British/Irish team of players at East Tennessee State University also failed to advance, their total of 59 over par left them tied for 22nd place.
UCLA, led by the individual winner, Kevin Chappell, captured their second national golf title – and first since 1988. UCLA closed with an 18-over 306 for a 42-over 1,194 total and hung on for a one-shot victory over defending champion Stanford, which closed with a final-round best 302.
The University of Southern California team, which battled its city rivals from start to finish, was another shot back at 1,196 after a 305.
Chappell won the coveted title with rounds of 69, 73, 68 and 76 for 286. He had three shots to spare from Spaniard Jorge Campillo (Indiana) and Nick Taylor (Washington).

James Byrne has an 81 in third
round of NCAA championship

Two suspensions of play for lightning meant that the third round of the NCAA Division 1 championship was not completed on Friday at the Kampen course in the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Indiana.
Kevin Chappell (UCLA) is the leader in the clubhouse and certain to still be ahead of the field when the fourth and final round begins after the third round is completed.
He has shot 69, 73 and 68 for a six-under-par tally of 210, which is great scoring over a course measuring the best part of 7,500yd.
Kevin leads by four shots from Kyle Stanley (Clemson) and Nick Taylor (Washington).
Banchory's James Byrne (Arizona State) did not had a good third day. He totted up an 81, obviously his worst of the three rounds so far. Ironically, James kept a double bogey off his card, which he was not able to do in rounds one and two, but he had only one birdie, at the 15th, in halves of 41 and 40.
Of the players who have completed three rouonds, James is sharing54th place on 233 with his scores of 78, 74 and 81.

James Byrne has disappointing
78 in NCAA Div 1 championship

Banchory's James Byrne, a student at Arizona State University and the only Scot in the field for the season-ending American college golf circuit highlight, the NCAA Division 1 championship, shot a disappointing opening round of 78 over a long Kampen course (7450yd, par 72) at the Brick Boilermaker Golf Complex at West Layfayette, Indiania (Wednesday, USA time).
James, pictured righy by Cal Carson Golf Agency (all rights reserved), birdied two long holes, the fourth and the sixth, but had a double bogey 5 at the short 17th and also dropped shots at the fifth, seventh, ninth, 11th, 12th and 18th in halves of 37 and 41.
The 19-year-old is in joint 70th place in a top-class field of 155 players behind Kevin Chappell (UCLA), the pacemaker on three-under-par 69.
James's dad Paul can give us an insight into the day's play:
Spoke to James last night. He said it was the most difficult test he’s faced on a golf course! Nevertheless, he and his team felt they stuck in there reasonably well given the very tough conditions. The wind speed dropped quite a bit for the p.m.starters, however this didn’t seem to have a big affect on the team scores.

The Golfweek team ref
http://www.golfweek.com/story/balicki-ncaa-rough-052808 are saying that the course is set up as challenging as any major. Even with the monster length, at just under 7500 yards, the fairways are tight and the first cut of rough around the fairways and greens is 5 inches and waist high a few yards in. After his practice round, James had forecast that the average score for the field in round 1 would be 77 – It was 78.9!

ASU tee off today in the afternoon group, unfortunately they won’t have a weather advantage, as the wind speed isn’t expected to get much above 10 mph all day. However, with three rounds to go, the guys will be going all out to catch the leaders. After the third round, only the top 15 teams will go forward to play the final round. ASU are currently tied for 17th but only 5 shots back from 10th place. We can expect to see many changes in team positions as the tournament progresses. With the calmer weather I expect scores will be marginally better but the course will be taking few prisoners.

Next year the tournament format is to be changed. After three rounds the top teams will play each other in matchplay to find the winning team (the individual winner being announced after round 3). They haven’t decided yet but they will probably use a modified matchplay/strokeplay format to allow the players to play all 18 holes. The matchplay rounds are to be televised I believe. PAUL BYRNE

We did set new scoring records at our Regional Tournament and Conference Tournament. We also won eight tournaments and were ranked No. 2 for the year.
Will has been selected to be our Captain of next year’s team and he will be one of the best, I know.

William Bremner from Edzell, a first-year student at John A Logan College, Illinois, scored his first win on the US men's college circuit - in his college's only Spring Invitational tournament.
William, pictured above, beaten finalist in last year's Scottish boys' match-play championship, strung together rounds of 71 and 73 for a par-matching 36-hole total of 144 in very difficult conditions.
He won by two shots from team-mate Patrick Scheil who had rounds of 73 75.

John A Logan (610) won the team title by five shots from runners-up South Mountain from Phoenix, Arizona.
John A Logan college head golf college Tom Ferris commented:
"William Bremner's even par total for two rounds was an outstanding performance in extremely diffiult conditions. We layed the course from the 7,200yd markers but, because of the strong winds and rainy conditions, it played more like 7,500yd.
"Patrick Scheil, whom William beat into second place, is currently ranked No 1 in our division."

ARIZONA STATE IN PAC-10
CHAMPIONSHIP VICTORY

Banchory's James Byrne played a major part in helping Arizona State University to win the Pac-10 Conference college golf team championship at Meadow Club, Fairfax in California (on Wednesday USA time).

Honeck won the individual championship with a birdie at the first play-off hole.

He was the only player in the quality field to break par and he did it with a superb inward half of 31, birdieing the 10th, 12th, 13th, 15th and 16th.
He had earlier birdied the first but dropped shots at the sixth and ninth in an outward 36.
That super score propelled Byrne up among the leaders to joint second place on three-under-210 with one round to go. He is one of five players only one shot behind leader Kevin Chappell (UCLA).
Mark Lamb from Haddington, like Byrne a former winner of the Scottish boys' open stroke-play championship and now a student at Arizona University, is back in joint 50th place on 227 after rounds of 74, 75 and 78. He had a double bogey in his first round and again in the second.
