England name three for Skandia Junior
Open in Sweden this month

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH GOLF UNION
Stiggy Hodgson, winner of three trophies already this year, plus his Surrey colleague Gary King and Jonathan Bell from Kent have been selected to represent the English Golf Union in the Skandia Junior Open in Sweden at the end of this month.
All three have played in overseas events before but this will be their first involvement in this championship, which also has a girls' competition, and is being played at the Delsjo Golfklubb, near Gothenburg from May 23 to 25.
Hodgson, 17, from the Sunningdale club, is enjoying a superb start to 2008 with victories in the McEvoy Trophy and the Selborne Salver which helped him lift the Hampshire Salver for the best aggregate from the latter and the Hampshire Hog.
He has also finished runner-up in the Berkhamsted Trophy and tied second to King in the Surrey Under-18 Championship, while last year he was equal third in the Berkshire Trophy and helped Surrey win the boys' county championship.
Bell, 16, was English Under-14 champion in 2004. He has twice finished in the top three in the Douglas Johns Trophy and last year he finished sixth in the South-east junior championship and ninth on the Carris Trophy. The Royal Blackheath lad also represented the EGU in the Dutch Junior Masters.
King, 17, who has been capped at Under-16 and boys' levels, was another member of Surrey’s victorious boys' county championship team last year. That success formed part of a triumphant 2007 for the former Surrey Under-14 champion. He finished equal first in the South-east boys' qualifying, runner-up after a play-off for the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters and was a quarter-finalist in the British boys' championship.
He was also a member of the England four-man team that won the Honda International Junior Championship in Japan. King has also tasted success this season, winning the Surrey Under-18 title and the Hampshire Hog after a play-off and finishing third in the McEvoy Trophy.
The Skandia Junior Open is a 54-hole tournament with a cut after two rounds, the leading 48 players and ties going on to contest the final round. The Delsjo course, which measures around 6,300 yards with a par of 71, is cut through a forest with narrow fairways and many doglegs. England squad:
Jonathan Bell (Royal Blackheath).
Stiggy Hodgson (Sunningdale).
Gary King (Tyrrells Wood).

TEE OFF FOR COUNTY FOURS
The first two ties in the 2008 County Foursomes team event took place last week over the Schawpark course in wet conditions, indeed it was touch and go on Thursday evening when a course inspection had to be made prior to the tie.
Holders Braehead had a tough opening tie against home club Alloa. Early exchanges on the first two matches were fairly even, but in the last match the Alloa couple fell well behind and could not overtake their opponents, leaving Braehead as the overall winners.
All matches play 18 holes and the aggregate of holes up and down decide the match result
RESULT (Alloa names first)
Ian Ross & Alan Hyem lost to Scott Moffat & Mike Rust 3 holes
Phil Dempsey & David Milloy beat Ross Benvie and Scott McChristie 2 holes
Jamie Aitken & Andre Scotland lost to David Finlayson & James Muir 4 holes
BRAEHEAD won five up.

In the second tie, a strong Tulliallan team had an easy win over Tillicoultry
RESULT (Tulliallan names first)
Steven Horne & Mark Crichton beat John Gullen and Scott Hunter 6 holes
Bob Stewart and Sandy Horne beat David Finlay and Andrew McPherson 3 holes
Gordon Lyons and Martin Scott beat Jim Malcolm and Keith Watson 5 holes
TULLIALLAN won 14 up

In the semi-finals this week, Braehead play Alva and Tulliallan play Dollar.

DOUBLE WHAMMY FOR DOLLAR

IN COUNTY BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP

The 2008 event over Tillicoultry Golf Course attracted a good entry with 19 junior boys (Under-14) and 16 senior boys (Under-18).
Special guest was Michael Niven who presented the trophies on the Golden Jubilee of his own boys' championship wins from 1957 to 1959. A special thanks must go to the filled rolls provided by David and Janet Baird for the competitors.
In the senior boys section for the Mossman Trophy, it was Dollar’s Steven McPherson who triumphed, taking the title on the inward half from Braehead’s John McPherson.
Steven’s birdie 3 at the 17th proved crucial, and countered John’s birdie at the 16th. Home player Scott Hunter took the top handicap prize

RESULTS
SCRATCH
S McPherson (Dollar) 71 (better inward half).
J McPherson (Braehead) 71
G Dowie (Alloa) 73.
HANDICAP
S Hunter (Tillicoultry) (6) 66.
J Salmond (Alloa) (5) 68.
S Clark (Braehead) (6) 68

The junior boys play for the Drysdale Trophy dating from 1961 and among its many winners is football pundit Alan Hansen in 1970.
It was Dollar again with Gary Chalmers reversing last year's result and taking the silverware by one shot from Alva’s Reyner Kennedy with Lawrence Allan, the holder, in third place.
Gary was heading for a score that would have equalled the senior boys' best, but he slipped up on the last two holes, dropping four shots to par but still good enough to take the 2008 title.
He will now have his sights on the County Junior match-play title to equal Lawrence Allan’s achievement in 2007.
As in the senior boys, top handicap prize went to a home player - Grant Carmichael.

RESULTS
SCRATCH
G Chalmers (Dollar) 75.
R Kennedy (Alva) 76.
L Allan (Alva) 77.

HANDICAP
G Carmichael (Tillicoultry) (20) 62.
R Millar (Alva) (13) 64.
D Hunter (Alloa) (25) 65.

NO JOY AT LYTHAM TROPHY
Local elite golfers Callum Macaulay and Scott Borrowman had no luck at the prestigious Lytham Trophy, held over Open Championship course Royal Lytham St Annes.
In tough conditions, neither made the cut of 147 after two rounds, Callum scoring 152 ( 71, 81) and Scott 162 (83,79).
Both will be hoping for a bit better form in a succession of elite amateur events coming up in the next couple of months.

2008 SCOTTISH MID AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
The older (over 25!!!) County elite golfers may be interested in the 2008 event which is being played at the up market Dundonald links course in Ayrshire from the 14th till 16th June.
There is a stroke play qualifying with 16 going forward to match play and the entry fee is £40 with a closing date of the 15th May.
The handicap limit is 5.4 although it will fall no doubt as the event should be popular.
Entry forms are available from the Scottish Golf Union or downloaded from their web site.

PROVAN SALVER

The Clackmannan county team’s hopes of taking the 2008 Provan salver evaporated in the warm spring sunshine at Schawpark. Against a strong Perth and Kinross side, the county lost
4-3 with one halved match.
Clackmannan needed a strong performance that would better the Fife performance at Dunfermline, but in the end the task was out of reach when Fife took their match 5-2 with one halved, and became the Provan Salver winners for 2008.
Perhaps there was an omen on the first tee when seven out of the eight Clackmannan tee shots missed the fairway, only tail ender Ian Ross finding the centre with much acclaim from the spectators.
Top performances for the Wee County came from Mike Rust with the best result of the day. Mike stood two up after eight holes and with steady golf, never let talented youngster Danny Harrison back into the game.
Darren Hulston, with a solid par at the last, took his match, and Alloa player Ian Ross showed how to deal with pressure when he hit a four iron at the last to 5 ft to win. John Maxwell was up most of the way, but allowed his opponent to escape with a halved match.
MATCH RESULTS
(County names first)
Ross Benvie (Braehead) lost to Malcolm Davidson (Craigie Hill) 2 and 1.
Steven Horne (Tulliallan) lost to Nicky Barr (Craigie Hill) 2 and 1.
Jamie Aitken (Alloa) lost to Mark Rose (Pitlochry) 3 and 2.
Andre Scotland (Alloa) lost to Eric Lindsay (Blairgowrie) 3 and 2.
John Maxwell (Tulliallan) halved with Danny Young (Craigie Hill).
Darren Hulston (Dollar) beat Steve Carruthers (Blairgowrie) 1 hole
Mike Rust (Braehead) beat Danny Harrison (Crieff) 5 and 4.
Ian Ross (Alloa) beat Tom McLevy (Blairgowrie) 2 holes.

Clackmannan county selectors will now be pondering their selections for the first round of the Scottish area team championship in three weeks.

MICHAEL BONALLACK TROPHY
As reported last week, the European team who played Asia-Pacific at Valderrama contained two Scots - Wallace Booth (Comrie) and Tulliallan’s Callum Macaulay.
It was another milestone of achievement when Callum played all his matches at the No. 1 position for the European team.
In the four-balls and foursomes he was paired with Wallace in the Ryder Cup format of the event.
On Day 1, Callum and Wallace were hit by two birdies at 16 and 17 to lose the four-ball match to the New Zealand pairing of James Gill and Danny Lee.
However, in the afternoon foursome they had a comfortable win against the Japanese pair of Yuki Ito and Naoyuki Tamura.
On Day 2 Callum and Wallace were rested in the morning, but in the afternoon foursomes they took revenge on the New Zealanders whom they beat 3 and 1.
The Day three singles saw Callum suffer another steal from the Japanese player in the top singles match. Two birdies again at holes 16 and 17 turned the match to Yuki Ito who halved the last for a one hole victory.
The overall result of the match was an emphatic win for the Europeans over the Asia Pacific golf team to take the Bonallack Trophy.
Callum now moves to the prestigious Lytham Trophy this weekend where all the top golfers compete in the first major event of the 2008 Amateur season. Selectors will be out in force, looking for the 2008 talent.

COUNTY BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP
It’s the turn of the Clackmanna county junior golfers to make their mark in competitive golf when the 2008 championships visit Tillicoultry on May 4.
In the senior boys' section, 24 boys will be competing with Alloa’s Grant Dowie trying to defend his title, while in the junior boys' section for the Under 14s, 21 hopefuls will be playing and in this section Lawrence Allan will be defending his title, with his strongest opposition coming from Dollar’s Gary Chalmers.
The talking point of the draw is the continuing strength of boys' golf at Alva. No fewer than 20 out of the total entry of 45 will represent Alva Golf Club.
As well as competing for the titles and prizes of the day, the boys will be trying to qualify for their match-play championships which take place during the following week.
Scott Clark, Lawrence Allan and William Nelson will all be trying to defend titles against stiff opposition.
Play starts at 08.30 for the senior boys and 11.15 for the juniors.
County president Sam Kinnaird is looking forward to the event.
“We have a good entry this year and there should be some outstanding golf that is worth watching. Hopefully the weather will be kind “

Paul Shields and Kyle Smith finished joint first at the second SGU Junior Tour event of the season at Irvine Golf Club.
Shields, a finalist at the Scottish boys championship just a few weeks ago - he missed out to eventual victor Michael Stewart, winner of the first Junior Tour event at Kingsbarns - was determined to follow the national championship with an early season title win.
The Kirkhill player, a member of the winning side at the Boys Quadrangular in his first team event of the season, bagged three birdies in his first round to finish three over on the tough links course, one of the Open qualifying venues in 2004.
With a trio of birdies in his following round, Shields’ one over par 72, the lowest round of the day matched only by one other competitor in the field, Tom Blennerhassett from Dalmahoy, propelled him to the top of the leader board. However, Kilmarnock Barassie’s Smith - a former winner of the George MacDonald Memorial Bowl for the leading Under-16 player at the Scottish boys' stroke-play when it was hosted at Monifieth - achieved two consistent rounds of 73, buoyed by sinking a 20ft putt at the last which saw him share the spoils with Shields.
Tom Blennerhassett finished three shots adrift of the leaders on seven over par, while Inchmarlo player Chris Robb finished in fourth place on eight over.
The next Junior Tour event will be hosted at Whitekirk Golf & Country Club on May 4.

Stiggy Hodgson wins Peter
McEvoy Trophy play-off

Stiggy Hodgson (Sunningdale) won the Peter McEvoy Trophy at Copt Heath Golf Club this evening.
He beat Eddie Pepperell (Drayton Park) at the first hole of a sudden death play-off.
They had tied on two-over-par 250.
The leading Scot was England-based Stuart Ballingall. He finished sixth with rounds of 71, 36, 71 and 75 for 253.
Sam Binning (Ranfurly Castle) dropped out of the title chase over the last two rounds in which he scored 78 and 74 to finish joint eighth on 254.
New Scottish boys' match-play champion Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) had a good last round of 71 in difficult conditions, a cold easterly wind coming in from a different direction than on the first day.
But it was too little, too late by Michael. He finished 27th on 261 with scores of 73, 38, 79 and 71.
Colin Thomson finished 35th with rounds of 74, 36, 80 and 74 for 264.
If the Copt Heath club ever get round to putting up the final totals on their website - still not up at 11pm Thursday night, we shall tell you what they are on this website.

MICHAEL STEWART IS NEW
SCOTTISH BOYS' MATCH-PLAY
CHAMPION

Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) will enroll at East Tennessee State University in the autumn as Scottish boys' Under-18 match-play champion.
Michael, picture right by courtesy of Tom Ward, won the title at Southerness Golf Club on the Solway Firth today, beating Paul Shields (Kirkhill) by 8 and 7 in the 36-hole final.
After an evenly contested 15 holes in the morning, Stewart was only one up. But he made his winning move by birdieing the 16th, getting an eagle at the 17th and a winning par at the 18th.
Stewart had surged into a four-hole lunchtime lead and there was no way back for Shields when Stewart went five up at the second hole of the second round.

Buchanan Castle Golf Club Junior Open Day

clubgolf Press Release

Buchanan Castle Golf Club, which joined forces with the national junior golf programme, clubgolf, this year to encourage children and their families to play golf, is holding an Open Day for juniors this Sunday (30 March) between 11am and 4pm.

Recognising an absence of facilities in the area, the Club, near Drymen, has developed a six-hole course, which it plans to increase to nine, and a dedicated short-game area.

“Over the last season we have created a six hole Academy course, set up for juniors and we will develop another three, so ultimately we will have a nine hole par 3 course with holes from 60 to 240 yards,” said Keith Baxter, the Club’s professional.

“We’ll have a driving range as well this summer and we already have planning permission for covered bays too.

“It will be ideal for the kids and will give them a place they can come and develop their game without being intimidated on a big course. We hope this will create an environment where they can relax and enjoy it, remain playing golf and become full members.”

By joining forces with clubgolf, Mr Baxter can offer young golfers, particularly primary school-aged children who have experienced the programme’s introductory game, firstclubgolf, in school, a golf coaching programme which could take them right up to area coaching level.

This Sunday’s Open Day is an opportunity to welcome children and families, giving them a taste of what the Academy has to offer.

“The Open Day is primarily for children coming through the schools looking to progress, but if people come that are a bit more established or that are complete beginners we will be delighted to see them,” said Mr Baxter.

“We’ve started an Academy membership so children can join the wee course and use the practise facilities and the clubhouse. There’s coaching included in the first year’s membership so we can encourage and educate them.”

For information on Buchanan Castle GC and this weekend’s Open Day please contact the pro shop on Tel: 01360 660330.

Scottish Golf Union Press Release

Six Clubs Short-listed For Junior Awards

Six of Scotland’s golf clubs have been short listed for the final of the inaugural Dunfermline Building Society Junior Club of the Year Awards with the winners to be announced at the Scottish Golf Dinner later this month.
North-east clubs Alford and Inverurie were selected for final nomination, alongside Turnhouse GC from Edinburgh, Greenock Whinhill, Reay Golf Club in the north of Scotland and Ayrshire club, West Kilbride.
Nominations from 50 golf clubs across Scotland were received by the Scottish Golf Union’s judging panel, who were left with the difficult decision of which clubs to leave out.
“The standard of entry has been excellent, demonstrating the high level of commitment many of our clubs have towards encouraging junior participation and growing the game in their communities.” said Andy Salmon, Development Manager for Scottish Golf.
“Whilst we have short listed six golf clubs, all those who were nominated can all be very proud of their efforts and will undoubtedly become the benchmarks for other clubs to follow. All the entries we have received are reflective of the positive attitude Scottish golf has towards youngsters in the game.” he added.
Following the launch of the Awards in December by leading Tour professionals Peter Whiteford and Clare Queen, clubs have been working hard to complete their nominations, based on their efforts to encourage juniors, provide improved facilities, harness links to their local community and develop talent at their club.
Graeme Dalziel, Chief Executive of sponsors Dunfermline Building Society, was delighted to see the Awards prove so popular in their first year:
“We are very proud to sponsor the Junior Club of the Year Awards and support grass roots golf in Scotland. Much of the hard work done by volunteers in our clubs goes unnoticed and these Awards will help recognise the fantastic efforts of so many people.”
“Dunfermline Building Society’s commitment to junior golf in Scotland will hopefully encourage even more youngsters to get involved in golf across our communities and support the great work being done both locally and nationally.”
The judging panel will select the winning club over the next two weeks, with the announcement of the Junior Club of the Year made at the Scottish Golf Dinner on Friday 28 March in Glasgow.
The winning club will be presented with a cheque for £1000 for their junior section, which will be awarded by former European Tour star Dean Robertson alongside Graeme Dalziel. The five-runners up will each receive £300, with all clubs represented by their junior convenors at the event.
Dunfermline Building Society’s Fairway Saver account, which also supports golf clubs in Scotland, has already attracted nearly 2,000 new customers, with £500 given to any club who signs up 50 of their members.
