Ninety six percent of the area’s Primary 5s – 1,246 children – have been introduced to the programme this year through firstclubgolf.
One local youngster who was inspired by the Tom Watson experience was Maybole 13 year old Stephen Maxwell, who is part of the clubgolf programme at Maybole Golf Club.
“Today was great,” he said. “I learnt how to handle the grip and hit the ball straighter. I hit the ball a lot further than I can normally.
“I only started playing golf this year but I’m really enjoying it. I’ve started playing every day, now I just want to get better.”
Meanwhile the clubgolf coaching area at this week’s Championship is set to provide 250 short lessons for juniors.
clubgolf will run two bays specifically for children aged between nine and 14. A further two will be available for members of the public to book.
Said clubgolf Project Manager, Torquil McInroy, “The Senior Open Championship has made Scotland its home for a few years now, and I’m naturally delighted that clubgolf continues to work closely with this major event to promote junior golf in Scotland.
“Today was a great opportunity for children on local clubgolf programmes to meet and learn from a true golfing legend and I’m sure the experience will encourage all of them to keep playing, inspiring some to higher levels of achievement in their own golf.
“clubgolf has seen spectacular growth over the past year, and I’m grateful to the European Tour for their support in helping to make that happen.”

Rob Eyton-Jones
clubgolf Media Manager
Official clubgolf wesbite:

http://www.clubgolfscotland.com/

Published by scottishgolfview.com

BOOKLESS LEADS BY FOUR SHOTS AT
HALFWAY AT BLAIRGOWRIE

Overnight leader Mark Bookless (Sandyhills) has stretched his lead to four shots at the halfway stage of the firstpointusa.com Scottish boys' open stroke-play golf championship over the Lansdowne course at Blairgowrie Golf Club.
Bookless couldn't match his opening 67 but a two-under-par 72 for a seven-under-par tally of 137 leaves Scottish boys' match-play champion Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) with a six-shot gap to close over the final 36 holes.
Bookless turned his Tuesday form on its head. This time he mastered the outward half with birdies at the first, second and eighth to turn in 33, an improvement of four shots. But a double bogey 6 at the 10th kind of knocked the wind out of him and though he birdied the 13th and 16th he would drop another shot, at the 18th, for 37 home, which was seven shots more than he required in the first round.
Colin Thomson (East Renfrewshire) moved into second place on 141 with a 68, one of half a dozen boys to break 70 on the day. Highlight of his card was an eagle at the eighth and he also had birdies at the first, ninth, 13th, 15th and 16tth in halves of 33 and 35.
Kyle McClung (Wigtownshire County) is in third place on 142 after a 69.
Stewart's task on the final day is not a mission impossible by any means but his task could have been a shade easier because he bogeyed the 17th and 18th in a 73 for 143.

SECOND-ROUND TOTALS
Par 144 (2 x 72)
137 M Bookless (Sandyhills) 67 70.
141 C Thomson (East Renfrewshire) 73 68.
142 K McClung (Wigtownshire Co) 73 69.
143 M Stewart (Troon Welbeck) 70 73, S Binning (Ranfurly Castle) 68 75.
144 P Shields (Kirkhill) 71 73.
145 D Law (Hazlehead) 75 70, A Dalgliesh (Haywards Heath) 71 74, T Sharkey (Helensburgh) 73 72.
146 J Hendrick (Pollok) 73 73, K Smith (Kilmarnock Barassie) 71 75, T Blennerhassett (Marriott Dalmahoy) 77 69, L Johnston (Dumfries & Co) 77 69, T Weworski (US) 74 72, C Robb (Inchmarlo) 73 73.
147 C Baird (Bothwell Castle) 77 70, R Storrier (Downfield) 74 73.
148 D Young (Craigie Hill) 79 69, C Corbett (Dumfries & Galloway) 75 73, S Connell (Inverness) 76 72, J Robertson (Turriff) 71 77.
149 D Ramsay (Elgin) 78 71, J Treasurer (Inverness) 74 75, D Ryan (Ealing).
150 D MacAndrew (Royal Aberdeen) 75 75, O Huish (North Berwick) 81 69, A Dunton (McDonald Ellon) 77 73, F McKenna (Balmore) 71 79, C O’Neil (Pollok) 76 74.
151 G MacDougall (Bishopbriggs) 76 75, S Bolton (Magnolia Park) 78 73, I Allan (Hopeman) 77 74, F Clarke (Westhill) 77 74, A Graham (Crow Wood) 73 78, I Redford (King James VI) 79 72, S Clarkson (Ilkley) 76 75, S McLaren (King James VI) 76 75, E Markley (US) 76 75, A Reid (Paisley) 79 72, F Moore (Glenbervie) 75 76, G Stirling (Caldwell) 76 75.
MISSED THE CUT
152 M Dickson (Gullane) 78 74, J Rhind (Uphall) 80 72, L Bickerton (Spain) 74 78, S Ballingall (Dunston Hall) 77 75, C Trahan (Royal Aberdeen) 76 76, G Wright (St Andrews) 76 76, P McPhee (King James VI) 77 75, P Scanlan (Hamilton) 73 79, D Kay (Dunbar) 80 72.
153 A Lauder (Paisley) 77 76, M Reid (Downfield) 77 76, P Ramsay (Elgin) 78 75. His 66 included a double bogey 6 at the 14th so he had to shoot seven birdies in all to compensate for that blunder. He also dropped a shot at the 15th but finished up with a bag of seven birdies.
Also on 66 are David Broadfoot (Dumfries & County) and Euan Little (County Tipperary).
FIRST ROUND
Par 70
64 But that inspired run gave him a five-under-par round of 67 to lead the field.
Sam Binning (Ranfurly Castle) tucked in behind Bookless with a 68, spreading his five birdies more evenly - at the first, third, sixth, 12th and 17th in halves of 34. He had only one bogey as well, at the fourth.
Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck), bidding to pull off the rarely achieved Scottish boys' match-play and stroke-play doube, could feel well satisfied with a two-under 70 which gives him a platform from which to launch a challenge over the next three rounds.
Stewart had birdies at the first, 12th, 15tgh and 1`7th in halves of 36 and 34. Ian has signed an initial contract of 3½ years from the 1st July and got off to a winning start first time out at the recent Russian Seniors in Moscow.
“When I began our search for a player, I wanted to get somebody iconic who had the respect of the golfing public around the world. As soon as I heard Ian was available I knew he was exactly what we were looking for," said Simon Millington, Forgan's chief executive officer.
"Ian will work closely with us on product development to help keep us at the cutting edge of golf club technology and has been instrumental in making sure the online custom fitting system gives golfers of all standards clubs built to their exact specifications.
Ian Woosnam said:
“I’m delighted to be associated with such a respected and innovative brand as Forgan. I’m a strong supporter of using custom-fitted clubs to improve your game. The online custom fit service from Forgan is remarkable. It’s definitely a step in the right direction for the industry and will allow more golfers to realise their true potential.”
His highly distinguished professional career has seen Woosnam win more tournaments worldwide than any other contemporary British player – 46 to date. The Welshman was the first golfer in the world to win more than £1million in prize money in a single year and was world No 1 for 50 weeks.
In 1991 he claimed his most famous victory in winning the Masters at Augusta, beating Jose Maria Olazábal by a single shot.
Woosie was also the first player to win the World Match-Play Championship in three different decades and has proudly represented Wales in 14 World Cups, winning in 1987.
Having played in eight Ryder Cups, the pinnacle came when winning as captain in 2006 when Team Europe claimed victory in the competition by a record-equalling score of 18½ to 9½ points. This was also the first time Europe had achieved three successive victories.
About Forgan of St. Andrews
Forgan of St. Andrews, the world’s oldest golf brand, established in 1860, very quickly earned itself a reputation for quality and innovation. The next few years saw the company go from strength to strength and it was granted a Royal Seal of Approval when Robert Forgan was appointed official club maker to the Prince of Wales. Forgan clubs from that era are still some of the most collectable clubs in golf.
Now owned by Sports PLC, one of Europe’s leading online retailers, Forgan has continued its pioneering approach in the golf industry to become the first manufacturer to offer an online customised golf clubs service from its websites - www.forgan.co.uk in the UK and www.forgangolf.com in the USA.
All golf clubs from Forgan are manufactured to the highest quality and specifications, featuring state-of-the-art technology and materials applied throughout the new 2008 line-up. In the UK last year he finished high in the English Amateur and South of England Stroke Play, while so far this summer he has reached the last 32 of the Amateur Championship before losing to England international Chris Wood and finished runner-up in the Tillman Trophy.
Robinson, 19, was a semi-finalist in last year’s English Amateur at Royal St George’s. This year he has met with considerable success, winning the Formby Hare and the Pines Trophy while finishing runner-up in the Southport & Ainsdale Bowl and the Scottish Youths Open Championship. The England Under-21 Squad member has also been fourth in the Bernard Darwin Salver and fifth in the Lancashire Championship.
Wainwright, 22, is also enjoying a fine 2008 after being named in the England ‘A’ Squad. Having been top scorer for England in the Costa Ballena Tournament in Spain in January, he finished runner-up in the individual rankings in the Midland Qualifying and third in the Selborne Salver, Hampshire Hog and the Hampshire Salver.
In 2007, the Gainsborough player reached the last 16 of the English Amateur, was third in the Lagonda Trophy and fourth in the Selborne Salver.
The Czech Amateur is a 72-hole stroke play event with a halfway cut to the leading 70 players and ties with a further cut after the third round to the leading 40 players and ties. England Schools champion and Somerset boy champion Matt Kippen has a 7.10am start along with Andrew Terry from Manchester and Sussex-based Daniel Casey.
A total of 288 leading players will descend on the EGU headquarters in rural Lincolnshire seeking to join a long and exclusive list of English champions.
The English Amateur adopted a change of format last year at Royal St George’s which proved a winner with players and officials alike. Instead of straight match play from the start, as had been the practise for many years, two rounds of stroke play qualifying, one over the Hotchkin Course and the other over the Bracken, will be staged over the opening two days.
From that, the leading 64 players and ties will go forward to the knockout stages over 18 holes on the Hotchkin. Six days of quality golf is guaranteed with every member of the Elite and A Squads and most of the Under 21 and Under 18 Squads competing, thereby producing a line-up of internationals.
A total of 398 players filed entries with the cut-off coming at scratch, just 16 players off that handicap getting in, the rest being balloted out to a reserve list. This will be the sixth time the Championship has been staged at Woodhall Spa.
In 1967 Michael Bonallack was crowned champion followed by Mark James in 1974. The 1984 winner was David Gilford, Ian Garbutt took the title there in 1990, while another Bristolian, Mark Sanders triumphed on the last occasion in 1999.
The Championship starts at 7am on Monday, July 28 and culminates with the 36-hole final on Saturday, August 2.
Latest scores and news updates can be found on the EGU website http://www.englishgolfunion.org/-
Published by scottishgolfview.com

Tommy Fleetwood to captain
England in Boys' Home
Internationals at Royal Co Down

PRESS RELEASED ISSUED BY ENGLISH GOLF UNION
Lancashire’s Tommy Fleetwood, winner of all his matches in last year‘s tournament, has been selected to captain England in the Boys' Home Internationals at Royal County Down, Northern Ireland from August 5 to 7.
A year ago, at Machynys Peninsula in Wales, Fleetwood completed a clean sweep of his six matches as England regained the title they lost to Scotland in 2006. Fleetwood, 17, from the Formby Hall club, has enjoyed a highly-successful career over the past four years.
After finishing runner-up in the English Under-16 championship for the McGregor Trophy in 2005, he was capped at Under-16 level against Scotland while in the following two years he again faced the Scots and was also capped at that level against Spain.
He made his debut at boys' level in last year’s European boys' team championship in Denmark and also represented GB&I against Europe in the Jacques Leglise Trophy.
Last year, Fleetwood also won the Southport & Ainsdale Bowl, finished runner-up in the Lancashire championship and third in the North of England Under-16 championship. He was also a member of the four-man England team that won the Honda International Junior Championship in Japan.
He went one better in the Lancashire championship this year, winning the title at Formby, while he finished runner-up in the British Amateur championship at Turnberry and was a member of the England team that finished third in the recent European boys' team championship in Slovenia.
Over the past decade, England have won the Boys' Home Internationals title nine times. In last year's championship at Machynys Peninsula, England won 34 of their 45 matches in the round robin series to win the R&A Trophy ahead of Ireland.
Published by scottishgolfview.com

The Pride of Peterhead - that's the Junior

Pennant League winning squad

NEWS FROM RAB DUNCAN
Peterhead Golf Club Junior Convener.

Pictured above are the victorious Peterhead Golf Club junior golf squad, winners of the Aberdeen and District Junior Pennant League.
They defeated Hazlehead in the final at Kings Links, Aberdeen. The contest could not have been any closer and ended when Peterhead secured a 1/2 point on the 17th green of the final match to seal a 3 1/2 - 2 1/2 victory.

The result was all the sweeter after losing last year's final to Deeside on a count back. Had this year's final ended 3-3, Peterhead would again have lost on the count back so the last pairings from both clubs played out their last four holes in front of a crowd in excess of 100 spectators, knowing the overall result of the final rested on their shoulders. That's pressure!
Peterhead Golf Club only joined the Aberdeen & District Pennant League in 2006 and the whole club is extremely proud that the team bounced back from last year's heartbreak to win against a really strong Hazlehead team.

The caption for the picture is (you can enlarge the image by clicking on it):
Back Row: Mark Lawson, Jamie Reid, Matthew Wiseman, Lewis Cruikshanks, Paul Young, Lewis Davidson, Philip Lemon, Sean Skinner.Front Row: Mark Stainton, Ross Gordon,Christopher Thomson (capt), Kevin Park, Charles Cross, Alexander Innes, Scott Porter.

Missing : Adam Duncan, Glen McNiven, Jaime Cook.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

E-MAIL COLIN WITH YOUR JUNIOR NEWS AND PICTURES

If you have news from the junior membership - boys and girls - at your club, and would like it published on www.scottishgolfview.com or www.kirkwoodgolf.co.uk, all you have to do is E-mail it to Colin@scottishgolfview.com

Images to go with the words are welcome as well.

Published by scottishgolfview.com

Hundreds expected for clubgolf
junior coaching at Senior Open

clubgolf, Scottish golf’s junior golf programme which recently announced spectacular figures for the numbers of children it introduced to the game this year, will provide up to 250 short lessons for juniors at this week’s Senior British Open Championship at Royal Troon Golf Club (July 24-27).
So far this year clubgolf has introduced 33,466 Primary 5 children to the game in school. Thirty one out of 32 local authorities now offer its introductory game, firstclubgolf.
Schools in South Ayrshire are ahead of the game. Ninety six percent of the area’s Primary 5s – 1,246 children – have been introduced to the programme this year through firstclubgolf.
Judging from these statistics, junior coaching at the Championships – taking place in the players’ practice area - will be hugely popular. clubgolf will run two bays specifically for children aged between nine and 14. A further two will be available for members of the public to book.
The icing on the cake for juniors at the Championships this week will be a clinic hosted by the legendary Tom Watson on Wednesday (between 11.30am-12.30pm), which will be attended by 116 local children, 60 of whom are participating in clubgolf programmes.
Said clubgolf Project Manager, Torquil McInroy, “The Senior Open Championship has made Scotland its home for a few years now, and I’m naturally delighted that clubgolf continues to work closely with this major event to promote junior golf in Scotland.
“clubgolf has seen some spectacular growth over the past year, and I’m grateful to the European Tour for their support in helping to make that happen.
“Last year at Muirfield our coaching clinics proved very popular, and I’m sure they will be in high demand once again at Troon.
“The Seniors provides a chance for any young golfer to see some first class golf up close. The opportunity for these kids to rub shoulders with the top players is something that will live in their memories for many years to come, and I’m sure will be the reason for many of them to keep their own golfing progress on track.”
Published by scottishgolfview.com

201,000 attended 'really great'
Open at Royal Birkdale

FROM THE R&A WEBSITE
Despite the appalling weather that prevailed for much of the week, 201,000 people attended the 137th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. This puts the attendance in the top three of all time for an Open held away from St Andrews.
"I think getting over 200,000 people in this week was a fantastic achievement, given the weather, the commercial environment and the Tiger Woods situation," said Peter Dawson, Chief Executive of The R&A.
"All credit to golf fans in this part of the country."
Dawson also paid tribute to Padraig Harrington's willingness to put something back into the game, and added that the Championship had run very smoothly with very few problems coming his way during the week.
David Hill, Director of Championships at The R&A, also praised the golf fans of north-west England not only for their hardy attendance, but also for their impeccable behaviour and their purchasing of fish and chips in record numbers: an estimated 30,000 people enjoyed fish and chips at Birkdale this week.
For all that, it was the excitement of the golf tournament itself that will be most remembered, with all talk of the absence of Tiger Woods being forgotten long before the drama came to a conclusion on Sunday.
Michael Brown, Chairman of The R&A Championship Committee, summed it up perfectly. "I think it will come to be seen as one of the really great Opens," he said. "It was thrilling and compelling golf in exceptionally challenging conditions."
Published by scottishgolfview.com

Harrington pays tribute to
Torrance the 'genius'

FROM THE SPORT.SCOTSMAN.COM WEBSITE
By Mike Aitken
Padraig Harrington, the two-time Open champion, yesterday hailed Bob Torrance, his swing coach, as "a genius" and the best teacher of the game to be found anywhere in the world of golf.
Ten years after the men first met on the range at Loch Lomond, the partnership between the tireless Irishman and the shrewd Scot has helped to mould the first European golfer to win more than one major title since Jose Maria Olazabal.
Long renowned in his amateur days as an outstanding chipper and putter, Harrington was smart enough to work out after turning pro that he needed to overhaul his swing if he wanted to improve.
In perhaps the most successful swing re-design on this side of the Atlantic since Nick Faldo had his action taken apart by David Leadbetter, Harrington paid tribute to the 75-year-old Scot for turning him into one of the game's best ball strikers of the past decade.
"Bob is the best swing coach in the world," Harrington, 36, insisted at Birkdale the morning after he'd become the first European player in 102 years to successfully defend the Open title.
"You can see his genius in the way he can analyse any swing. He's spent his whole life examining the golf swing and his knowledge of cause and effect is just incredible."
Harrington also works with Dr Paul Hurrion, the biomechanics expert, who confirmed that everything Torrance sees naturally "with his own eye and his genius" is backed up by computer analysis and scientific evidence.
Published by scottishgolfview.com

<img style="FLOAT: right; Because I had to break off in the middle of the tournament - reporting on it from the tournament website - and go down to Southport for the R&A Junior Open last week, I lost track of it ... and, worse than that, although I found the tournament website again, quite unbelievably it did not have a recap on the final totals!
But, thanks to the R&A's David Moir, the man who organises the World Amateur Golf Rankings and, to that end, gathers in open tournament scores literally from around the world, I can now plug the gap in our service of reports and scores.
So, here we are:
Frenchman Cambis won by nine strokes
Robert McKnight from the Caprington club, Ayrshire, finished joint second with Englishman Jason Palmer on 269 - nine shots behind the all-the-way-leader, presumably a Frenchman, Guillaume Cambis.
Cambis shot 63, 65, 65 and 67 for 260. Not quite sure what the par was. I know it is a shortish course but that is still very good golf indeed.
McKnight (picture above by Cal Carson Golf Agency), scored 65, 68, 67 and 69 for 269, the same total as Jason Palmer (Kirby Muxloe, Leicestershire), the 23-year-old Midland open amateur champion, who scored 68, 68, 66 and 67. Farren Keenan (Sunningdale), who played four years on the American college circuit as a student at the University of Texas, finished fifth on 272 with scores of 68, 70, 66 and 68.
In sixth place was another representative of the English Golf Union, Billy Hemstock from the Teignmouth club in Devon. Billy scored 68, 66, 72 and 67.
James White (Lundin), the 2006 Scottish boys' match-play champion and Stirling University student, slipped over the last couple of rounds to finish joint 25th on 283 with scorfes of 67, 70, 75 and 71.
Matthew Clark (Kilmacolm), the third Scot in the international field, tied for 32nd place with scores of 67, 71, 72 and 75 for 285.
Cambis won the men's title by nine shots and Linn Gustafsson from Sweden did even better in the women's championship. She won that by ELEVEN shots!
Linn completed her freshman year in May at Texas State University. She comes from Ekero in Sweden.
Her scores in the Chiberta Grand Prix women's championship - once won by Kirsty Fisher, I recall, were 78, 73, 68 and 66 for 275.
Runner-up on 286 was one of the Derrey sisters from France - Stephanie, with 70, 73, 72 and 71 for 286.
Joint third on 288 were the halfway leader Marion Ricordeau, who had a disastrous last round of 81 (for 288) which undid all her good earlier work of 68, 68 and 71, and Fanny Bernard.
LEADING TOTALS
MEN
260 Guillaume Cambis (France) 63 65 65 67.
269 Jason Palmer (Kirby Muxloe) 68 68 66 67, Robert McKight Since then Stewart has graduated to top men's events like the St Andrews Links Trophy, finishing runner-up to Keir McNicoll (Carnoustie), and competing with distinction for Scotland in the recent European men's amateur team championship.
That does not mean it's a one-horse race over the four rounds at Blairgowrie. One could make out a case for at least half-a-dozen challengers, such as David Law (Hazlehead) who won the North-east District boys' championship a few days ago, Paul Shields (Kirkhill), Oliver Huish (North Berwick) and the King James VI trio of Paul McPhee, Sam McLaren and Ian Redford.
The championship is sponsored by firstpointusa.com, a leading sports scholarship consultancy, providing assistance to boys and girls seeking to pursue playing and academic careers and United States colleges and universities.
Michael Stewart enrols at East Tennessee State University in the autumn.

Published by scottishgolfview.com

Hi Ho Silver! The support I had from the fans was brilliant and playing with Ian Poulter in the final round was superb as he played so well.
“I didn’t feel under any pressure but it was another tough day in the wind,” added the 6ft 5in man from Long Ashton who won the admiration of the fans.
Starting the final round on eight over par after rounds of 75, 70 and 73, and with his father Richard as caddie, Wood kept his game under control in the blustery conditions and managed to find three birdies.
With Poulter in with a great chance of picking up the Claret Jug, the pair seemed to inspire each other but although Poulter matched Harrington’s 69, he had to settle for second place four strokes behind the Irishman.
With only two amateurs making the cut, the silver medal was a straight fight between Wood and Tom Sherreard, former boy cap and an England ’A’ Squad member, from Kent.
