ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates – Keith Pelley has issued his strongest message possible since taking over as chief executive in August 2015: give up European Tour membership in future and you can forget about becoming Ryder Cup captain or vice-captain.
Forever.
Four players will gain automatic selection from an enhanced European points list, with tournaments immediately before the match carrying more points.
Starting from the 2018 BMW PGA Championship, Race to Dubai points and world points will be multiplied by 1.5. That dynamic helps the Tour maximise most of the new events on the Rolex series.
So should the fact that no points will be available from tournaments that clash with Rolex Series events. It should mean Bjorn gets players who are performing at their best just before the match.
“For example, if a player right now at age 33 is playing on both tours and plays in the Ryder Cup, and then decides for whatever reason that he is eligible to play on the European Tour but he decides to just play the PGA Tour and gives up his membership, then he is no longer qualified to become a vice-captain or a captain of the Ryder Cup team.
“Just like you couldn’t be President of the United States if you are not a U.S. citizen, we felt it was important that not if you’re just living in America, you have to have some ties to Europe.
“You have to actually embrace what’s happening on the European Tour, and you have to be conscious of the young players and what’s coming up and developing relationships with them and we felt that was very important.”
The regulation comes into effect from 2018 onwards.
