Jimmy Gunn T33 after wind drops in Bahamas


Dornoch exile Jimmy Gunn is in T33 position after two rounds of the Web.com Tour event in the Bahamas.
The players had to contend with 40mph winds in the first round.
Gunn has scored 79 and 72 for 151 - nine strokes behind the leader by four, American Nicholas Thompson with rounds of 75 and 67.

Players with 36-hole totals of 156 and worse did not survive the cut.

Lawrie, O'Neil sharing 18th place with

 

par 72s on Algarve

Scots Craig Lawrie and Conor O'Neil are joint 18th with par 72s after the first round of the 36-hole Algarve Pro Tour event, the Duvalay Classic over the Quinta do Lago South course.

Lawrie was the steadier of the two with birdies at the 12th and 14th cancelling out early bogeys at the third and fourth.

O'Neil had four birdies - the fourth, 15th, 16th and 17th - but he also had four bogeys, at the first, fifth, 13th and 14th.

A third Scot in the field, Deeside amateur Benjamin Henderson had an 86 for a share of 69th place.

American consortium

The Dunvegan Hotel, St Andrews one of the most iconic 19^th holes

in the golfing world, has been sold to Forth Bridge Capital LLP,

 a consortium of golfing enthusiasts from Canada and the USA. 

Former owners, Jack and Sheena Willoughby, who owned and managed the business for the past 23 years, will maintain an interest in the Hotel and, as partners, assist the new owners going forward. From a customer, employee and patron’s perspective it will very much be business as usual.

The Dunvegan has hosted legends of the game, sports, screen and politics and has helped shape great golfing and entertainment memories for golf enthusiasts from around the world. This tradition will continue to be central from all perspectives.

Having been owners for the past 23 years, it's obviously a bittersweet time for us hence we were always hoping to find buyers of a likeminded nature to ourselves to take the Dunvegan into its next 'era'.  There is no doubt we have accomplished this goal as the new owners are all golfers and are well known to us and to the Dunvegan.”

Normally the Web.com Tour offers really low scores, with winners often delving into 20 under and better.
But, we don’t think that’s going to happen this week.
The 2017 Web.com Tour season commenced Sunday with the Bahamas Great Exuma Classic at the Emerald Reef Course. Yes, the first round is indeed on a Sunday, and it’ll be that way next event, too.
But that’s an extremely minor storyline compared to what actually happened out there Sunday. This course DESTROYED these golfers. Like destroyed to the point that even the USGA might be saying, “That’s a little much.”
Winds were whipping at Emerald Reef, apparently at 40+ mph, which went a long way in creating Sunday’s brutal conditions. Just ask Kyle Thompson.
Round 1 was suspended due to darkness, but there was still plenty of time for this course to bully golfers Sunday.
As you can see below, three players FAILED TO BREAK 90. And there were 16 rounds of 85 or worse on the par 72.

That is 16 of 65 players who finished Sunday coming in at 85 or worse. Wow.
Thompson actually had the tied for third best round in the clubhouse … at 4-over 76.
The best round on the day went to Tom Lovelady, who posted a 72. At this point, that score is a miracle. He leads by two (over Abraham Ancer) among those in the clubhouse.

The Web.com Tour’s Kevin Prise is on site this week and posted a field scoring average earlier this afternoon that is frankly unfathomable.

Oh, and, as of 3:12 p.m. ET, there was a hole out there where nobody had made a par yet.

The leaderboard (which has been wonky today) shows three players tied for the lead at 1 under early in their first rounds, which they will resume Monday morning.
There were 46 rounds of 80 or higher on the day. From the leaderboard snippet above, you can see that the highest round went to Byron Smith at 23-over 95.
The scoring average for the day for those who finished their rounds at this U.S. Open on steroids?
82.11.
Wow. No more words.

 

Cameron Carnegie wins PLF Winter Series event at Lossiemouth

Kemnay's Cameron Carnegie won the Paul Lawrie Foundation Winter series first event of the year over the New Course (par 68 with course shortened due to Winter Rules) at Moray Golf Club, Lossiemouth on Sunday.

Competitors were treated to a near flat calm and seasonally warm temperatures of around 12 degrees centigrade.
In the Scratch section, Carnegie's 72 scooped the first prize ahead of Logan Gillies (Nairn GC), who also carded a 72 but lost out owing to Cameron's superior back nine score. Steven Pears (Nairn Dunbar) was next best on 74.
Padraig Murray (Royal Dornoch) romped to victory in the handicap section of the competition as his 63 (78 less 15) was four shots better than second-placed Calum Daun's net score of 67 - 72 less 5). 

Finlay Wickenden (Nairn GC) returned a level par effort of 68 (78 less 10) for 3rd place.

Jim Furyk favourite to be USA Ryder Cup captain in 2018

The United States Ryder Cup captain for the 2018 match against Europe in Paris will be named on Wednesday, January 11 at 8.30 pm UK/Ireland time.
The red hot favourite for the post is Jim Furyk who played in nine straight Ryder Cup matches between 1997 and 2014 and was an assistant to Davis Love III, the USA captain at Hazeltine last year.
