Russell Knox finishes 16th in the Bahamas

Matsuyama wins Hero World Challenge as

Tiger proves toothless in final round

FROM THE US PGA TOUR WEBSITE
NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) -- Hideki Matsuyama of Japan won for the third straight time Sunday, holding off Henrik Stenson over the final few holes to win the Hero World Challenge.
Matsuyama, who started the final round at Albany with a seven-shot lead, never let anyone closer than six shots heading to the back nine. The final nine holes were a struggle, however. He closed with a 1-over 73 to win by two shots with a total of 18-under-par 270.
Matsuyama's earlier rounds were 65, 67 and 65.
Stenson shot 67, 71, 66 and 68 for 272.
A double bogey on No. 10 and a three-putt bogey on the easy 14th by the Japanese player allowed Stenson to get within three shots with four to play. Stenson three-putted the 15th for par and couldn't apply any more pressure.
Tiger Woods, in his first tournament in more than 15 months, shot 76 and finished 15th. His earlier scores were 73, 65 and 70. His final total was four-under-par 284.
Russell Knox, the Florida-based Scot from Inverness, had scores of 69, 72, 71 and 74 for 16th place on two-under 286.
The tournament's starting field consisted of 18 players, which was reduced to 17 when Justin Rose withdrew after the first round.

EDINBURGH-BASED AMERICAN WINS

LPGA TOUR PLAYER'S CARD

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Edinburgh-based American Beth Allen and England's Mel Reid finished tied 6th and seventh respectively at the LPGA Final Qualifying School and their top-20 positions earned them promotion to the lucrative American lady pro circuit in 2017.

Allen, pictured, had rounds of 71, 72, 68, 68 and 72 for a total of nine-under-par 351 for the golfing marathon over five days.
She said before the final round that she would not be deserting the Ladies European Tour where she has become a leading player.
She wanted LPGA Tour playing rights so that she would have somewhere to play competitively when there was no LET tournament.
Reid scored 69, 64, 75, 72 and 72 for 352.
World No. 2 amateur and GB and I's Curtis Cup star, Bronte Law from Cheshire, finished in a tie for 24th, just two shots off top flight qualification.
Bronte had rounds of 75, 68, 73, 70 and 72 for a total of 358.
Other British players who made the final day but finished outwith the all-important top 20 were former Curtis Cup player Stephanie Meadow (T27) from Northern Ireland, and England's Hannah Burke (T44) and Felicity Johnson (T55).
All three Scots in the starting field, Gemma Dryburgh, Sally Watson and Kylie Walker, missed the cut after four rounds.
Meadow was already guaranteed Category 17 (conditional) LPGA Tour status for the 2017 season before beginning the Final Q School but she needed to finish in the 20 to secure Category 12 (full) status. She missed the top 20 by three shots with rounds of 73, 70, 73, 73 and 70 for 359.
Burke shot 73, 75, 69, 69 and 77 for 363 while Johnson had rounds of 765, 66, 71, 77 and 74 for 364.
American Jaye Marie Green emerged on top after finishing on 13 under par 347 with scores of 68, 68, 67, 70 and 74.
Iceland's Olafia Kristindottir finished second on 348.
There were three Americans in the top four, Angel Yin and Sadena Parks sharing third place on 349.

Rookie Detry delighted with third-place

start to European Tour career

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Rookie Thomas Detry was delighted with his start to life as a European Tour player after finishing third at the Alfred Dunhill Championship.
The Belgian, who finished 15th in the 2016 Road to Oman rankings to secure his card for 2017, carded an eagle, four birdies and two bogeys in his fourth-round 68 to get to 13 under par.
And Detry was happy to make a strong start to the new season.
He said: "I'm very pleased with my start on the European Tour.
"It's a big boost. The season is long but starting like that is obviously fantastic.
"Starting like that releases the pressure a little bit, knowing that I'm up there already.
"I've put some points on the board and I've just got to keep doing what I'm doing.
"The card is not secured yet so I've just got to keep playing well."
After opening his round with a bogey on Sunday, Detry bounced back immediately with a birdie at the second.
The 23 year old then fired an eagle at the sixth to reach the turn in 33.
He dropped another shot at the tenth but made gains at the 12th, 13th and 15th to climb up to third place.
Detry is close friends with fellow Belgian Thomas Pieters and admits he is motivated by the Ryder Cup star's rapid rise.
Detry added: "He's been playing some fantastic golf.
"It's only motivating - you just want to go and join him and Nicolas (Colsaerts) as well, join them both at the top.
"It's amazing to see how fast everything went for him."

Scott Jamieson's weekend surge takes him to share of fourth

Stone rock solid as he wins Alfred Dunhill

Championship by seven shots

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Home favourite Brandon Stone claimed his second European Tour title in style with a seven-shot victory at the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa.
The South African produced a closing 67 at Leopard Creek Country Club to finish the week on 22 under par and secure his second trophy of the calendar year after winning January's BMW SA Open hosted by City of Ekurhuleni.
Richard Sterne finished alone in second on 15 under after posting a bogey-free 67 in his final round, while Belgium's Thomas Detry was two strokes further back in third.
Stone began the day three shots clear of the chasing pack, but he had company at the top of the leaderboard early on Sunday after Charl Schwartzel - a four-time winner of this event - notched three birdies in his opening six holes to join his countryman on 17 under.
But, after safely parring his first five holes, Stone made a gain at the sixth to regain the outright lead.

And with Schwartzel dropping a shot at the seventh and Stone, pictured above, rolling in his 15 foot birdie putt at the same hole, the 23 year old's lead was back to three strokes.
Stone carded a bogey at the eighth to slip back to 18 under, but bounced back in style, holing his bunker shot at the tenth to make his third birdie of the day.
He added another birdie at the 11th before saving par at the next to keep the momentum going.
Stone then made further gains at the 13th and 14th to get to 22 under and open up a six-shot gap.
And when Schwartzel carded a triple bogey at the long 15th, Stone found himself seven strokes ahead of nearest challenger Sterne.
Stone dropped his second shot of the day at the 17th before finishing with a birdie at the last to move to 22 under.
Sterne made a strong start to his final round, picking up shots at the first and third on his way to covering the front nine in 33.
The 35 year old then made three further gains on the back nine to jump up to second.
Scotland's Scott Jamieson posted a pair of three-under 69s to claim a share of fourth place on 12-under-par 276 in the final totals. He earned 40,300 euros.
David Drysdale slipped back with a final round of 73 to finish joint 10th on 278 and earn 18,580 euros.
