David Law, Duncan Stewart have disappointing final day

Four late birdies give Jordan Smith second

Challenge Tour win of 2016

FROM THE CHALLENGE TOUR WEBSITE
A dramatic late surge on the back nine gave Jordan Smith a second European Challenge Tour win of the year at the Ras Al Khaimah 2016 Golf Challenge and secured him the Road to Oman top spot heading into the season finale.
The Englishman made four birdies in five holes to take a one-shot lead down the last hole at Al Hamra Golf Club, Muscat in Oman and a safe par meant the 23-year-old edged José-Filipe Lima into second place with a final-round 66 and an overall total of 20 under par.
The win returns Smith to Number One spot in the Rankings – meaning his caddie will wear a golden bib at the NBO Golf Classic Grand Final next week – and Smith was delighted to match his early- season victory in Egypt with another trophy in similarly hot conditions.
“I’m over the moon to be honest, really happy,” he said. “I missed the last two cuts but I knew my game was there or thereabouts and I actually played really well last Friday in China so I wasn’t far away.
“I just came out this week and relaxed, took my mind of things, and gave it my all, and it all paid off today – the course suited my eye and I really enjoyed it, and of course I’m delighted with the end result.
“It feels very similar to that win in Egypt – Ras Al Khaimah and this course remind me a lot of that week, which is probably a good thing. I sweat just as much as anybody else but the heat seems to suit me.
“I did something similar a year ago, winning late to win the Order of Merit on the EuroPro Tour, and I’m really targeting that top spot in the Road to Oman Rankings now.
"I got my caddie the gold bib for next week at least, so that’s the first job done and he’s happy about that!
“I think we’re going to go into Dubai tonight to celebrate a bit, have a few drinks I’m sure
“I definitely want to win the Rankings but I’m just going to go out there in Oman, not think about it too much about finishing on top, I’m just going to go out there and play my game.
“To be honest I never expected a year as good as this one so early into my Challenge Tour career. I knew my game was in the right shape to compete and that win early on just boosted my confidence and it’s gone pretty well since!”
Lima’s outstanding weekend rounds of 66 and 65 took the Portuguese player into outright second and lifted him into the top 16 of the Rankings at the timeliest moment of the year, with European Tour cards decided in seven days’ time.
Former Dubai resident Johan Edfors was right at home as he closed with a 67 to take third place on 17 under par, with his fellow Swede Marcus Kinhult and Spaniard Pedro Oriol sharing fourth place to secure top 70 spots on the Road to Oman and secure their Challenge Tour status for next season.
SCOTWATCH: David Law and Duncan Stewart had a disappointing final day which saw both of them drop out of the top 10. Aberdonian Law finished T11 with a fourth-round 72 for a 13-under-par aggregate of 275 after earlier scores of 68, 69 and 66. He earned 5,706 euros.
Stewart earned 2,758 euros for a share of 24th place after a last-round 75 sent him tumbling down the list of final totals. The Grantown on Spey man's earlir rounds were 68, 69, 66 and 75 for 278.
Grant Forrest closed with a par 72 which, in a low scoring tournament like this one, meant he too lost ground and earned a lesser payslip than he would have done if he had scored in the 60s today. The Craigielaw man earned 2,187 euros.
Scott Henry from Cardross also totalled 279 with rounds of 66, 73, 70 and 70.

Matt Kuchar makes hole-in-one, doesn't

win car prize because of ridiculous rule

161029-matt-kuchar.png

A rich PGA US Tour star not getting to keep a shiny new car is the height of a first-world problem. But what happened to Matt Kuchar at the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai today still falls under the category of highway robbery.
Kuchar made a hole-in-one on the par-3 17th in the third round, just a few feet away from a Cadillac that's on display as a prize for such a shot. So why is the car staying in China and not being shipped to Kuchar's driveway? Because of some fine print.
Apparently, the shot had to be at least 200 yards for any player to win the vehicle. And on Saturday, with the tee moved up because of course conditions, the hole was  playing only193 yards. What a dagger!
The rule was posted before the start of the round. It had nothing to do with the organisers of the tournament.
The problem was the hole-in-one insurance proviso that was established before the tournament. But really? A 193-yard ace is no good? That's rough.
Kuchar shot 68 and is tied for eighth place through three rounds at nine under. Hideki Matsuyama is 17 under and has a three-shot lead over defending champ Russell Knox.
The AP's Doug Ferguson talked to Kuchar and his caddie, John Wood, after. Although the pair were disappointed, at least the odd situation didn't totally catch them by surprise.
"Don't worry about a hole-in-one today," Wood joked with Kuchar before he hit his shot. "We don't get the car."
But still. . .
"I was teased by this beautiful car sitting there that's not to be mine," Kuchar said.
Yep, you got robbed, Kuch. But something tells us you'll be OK.

Rory McIlroy pulls out of Turkish Airlines

Open without giving a reason

Rory McIlroy has withdrawn from next week's Turkish Airlines Open, the first of the European Tour's three Final Series events.
No reason was given by the four-time major winner's manager when he informed Tour officials of the decision today but it is a reasonable assumption that the recent rocket attack in the Turkish holiday region of Antalya was a contributory factor.
McIlroy is currently contesting the WGC-HSBC Champions in China and had spoken of his desire to win at least one of his last three events this season - in Shanghai, Turkey and Dubai - to try to win the Race to Dubai for a third year in succession.
The 27-year-old world No 3, who is more than a million points behind Race to Dubai leader Danny Willett, was set to be the star attraction at the Regnum Carya Golf and Spa Resort in Antalya after Tiger Woods pulled out - the 14-time major winner saying he needed more time to work on his game after a long injury lay-off.

Earlier this month, European Tour officials investigated reports that the southern Turkish holiday resort region of Antalya was hit in a rocket attack.
Turkish media reported that two rockets were fired from a mountainous area close to the highway linking the city of Antalya to the resort town of Kemer.

Leader Bradley Neil crashes in final Spanish

round and finishes fifth

Two shots ahead of the field with 18 holes to play, Blairgowrie's Bradley Neil plummeted to fifth place as a result of a disastrous closing round of six-over-par 78 - 14 strokes more than he took in his second round at the Spanish Evolve Tour's Pre-Q 54-hole event that ended at Bonmont Golf Club, Tarragona today (Saturday).

Neil, pictured left, won many tournaments as an amateur but he has lost the knack since turning professional. Mental pressure? Who knows? But it is sad to see such a talented young player not fulfilling his great potential in the pro ranks.
Christian Braeunig from German was the winner by two shots with rounds of 68, 68 and 70 for 10-under 206.
Welsh amateur David Boote finished second on 208 (68-68-72).
Wallace Booth finished fourth with rounds of 76, 65 and 70 for 211 - one ahead of Neil whose three rounds were 70, 64 and 78.
Bradley did birdie two par-5 holes, the seventh and the 14th but he had six bogeys and a double bogey 7 at the par-5 17th in halves of 38 and 40.
Jamie Savage, the third Scot in the field of 20, finishe dninth of 20 with rounds of 72, 72 and 73 for one-over 217.

Second-placed Knox says he won't give up

WGC title without a last-round fight

Shanghai: Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama continued to spearhead the Asian challenge after storming ahead with a flawless four-under-par 68 in the third round of the WGC-HSBC Champions in China today.

Despite the chilly conditions, Matsuyama never looked likely to relinquish his overnight lead as he stayed cool under pressure by marking his card with four birdies to head into the final round with a three-shot cushion, courtesy of his three-day total of 17-under-par 199.

Defending champion Russell Knox from Inverness  matched Matsuyama’s 68 and took second place with his 202 total while American Daniel Berger is third on 203 at the US$9.5 million Chinese showpiece, which is also the most lucrative event in Asia.

Matsuyama stands on the brink of becoming the first Japanese to win a World Golf Championship but he knows he cannot get ahead of himself just yet.

Winning? Hopefully we can talk about it tomorrow. All I want to do now is to do my best tomorrow and hit one shot at a time,” said Matsuyama.

The Japanese, who broke into the world’s top-10 on the Official World Golf Ranking this week, is up against some of the world’s best players at the Sheshan International Golf Club and will be hoping to wield his putter like a magical wand on the day that would matter most.

“You know, the weather and the pin placements will dictate what type of golf I play. But I mean, everyone is so good. I know I'm going to have to make some birdies.
“So the key for tomorrow's round I hope not to make any bogeys and putt really well like what I’ve done today,” said Matsuyama.

Despite trailing the Japanese by three shots, Knox is resolute about putting up a stout defence of his WGC-HSBC Champions title, although he is impressed with the way Matsuyama has been playing.
“I'm not going to give up my title without a big fight tomorrow. I look forward to every minute tomorrow and see what happens.

“The way Hideki played today, he's probably going to play similarly tomorrow. He's an extremely aggressive iron player, and when he's on, he's as good as anyone. I'm going to have to be foot down, be aggressive and try and catch him,” said Knox.

Berger meanwhile believes he has to continue to stay grounded as he heads into the final showdown with Matsuyama and Knox in the final group.

“I’m trying to keep expectations down and have some fun while keep doing the same thing I've been doing the whole week,” said Berger.

Winless Greg Owen in joint 2nd place on US

Tour behind rookie Murray

JACKSON, Mississippi (AP) -- Grayson Murray and his caddie had a discussion before his final hole that centred on playing it safe or using his driver.

It was a short conversation.
"Driver, man," Murray said as he recounted the conversation. "Let's try to make birdie."
Turned out to be another good decision in a day full of them. After a solid drive on the 416-yard par 4 and a nearly perfect wedge from 89 yards, the 23-year-old US PGA Tour rookie made a short birdie putt for a 7-under 65 and a two-shot lead in the Sanderson Farms Championship on the US PGA Tour
Murray started his day with a bogey at No. 10, but then made eight birdies to take a two-shot advantage over Greg Owen (pictured above) and Seamus Power. The leader was at 12-under 132.
Owen, a 44-year-old Englishman who has never won a tournament on tour, has shot back-to-back 67s to put himself in contention.
"It's a good start - I'm happy," Owen said. "It's nice to get out this year and get back playing and playing decent and holing some putts. But there's a long, long way to go."
Irishman Power had a 69. Lucas Glover (69), Trey Mullinax (70), Graham DeLaet (69) and Brandon Hagy (68) were three strokes back.
Kevin Streelman had a two-shot lead after shooting a 63 in the first round, but struggled to a 73 to fall four strokes behind Murray. Cody Gribble was one of the big movers, shooting a 63 to pull within four shots.
But the story on Friday was about Murray, who is on the US PGA Tour just a few years after a nomadic college career that included stops at four universities- Wake Forest, East Carolina, UNC Greensboro and Arizona State.
Now he's leading a tour event going into the weekend in just his third career tournament.
"We practise to get in this position," Murray said. "We don't practise to make cuts, we practise to win golf tournaments. I know I have the game to win a golf tournament."
Murray said he expects plenty of competition over the weekend with 13 players within four shots of the lead. Nearly ideal conditions at the Country Club of Jackson have led to plenty of birdies.
"There's a lot of good players, there's a lot of birdies to be made on this course," Murray said. "But there's also some bogeys if you're not in the fairways. So just keep it in the short grass, give myself as many chances as I have done on the first two days.”
