Jack Currie, Jasmine Mackintosh win Junior

Champion of Champions' play-offs

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Jack Currie (Greenock) and Jasmine Mackintosh (Hazlehead) won the Scottish Junior Champion of Champions' boys' and girls' titles, both after play-offs, at The Duke's Course, St Andrews.
Currie and Callum Bruce (Duff House Royal) tied on level par 71, Bruce running up a double bogey 7 at the 11th but finishing strongly with birdies at the 13th, 14th and 18th to force a play-off.
Currie, pictured right, who had only two deviations from par, a birdie at the third and a bogey at the 11th, won the sudden-death play-off.
Graeme Greer (Carluke) finished third on 72.
It was the same story in the girls' competition.
Jasmine Mackintosh and Jennifer Rankine (Haggs Castle) tied with two-over-par 73s. Jasmine (pictured below) birdied the first, 14th and 18th in halves of 37-36. Jennifer birdied the 14th and 17th but bogeyed the eighth, ninth, 10th and 18th in halves of 38-35.

Three players tied for third place on 74 - Louise Duncan (West Kilbride), Kirsten Brown (Strathaven) and Joanne Free (Gullane).

Balmore finish 2nd, only one shot behind European Men's Club Trophy winners in Portugal

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
The Balmore Golf Club, Glasgow trio of Chris Maclean, JamesWilson and Neil McConnochie, Scotland's club champions this year, finished second, only a shot behind the winners, St Germain en Laye (France), in the European Men's Club Trophy championship over 54 holes at at Aroreira Golf Club, near Lisbon, Portugal today (Saturday).

Maclean, pictured, one of the highest-rated players in the field with a handicap of +3.1, tied with Germany's Nicolai Von Dellingshause (handicap +4.1) for first place in the individual standings. Both men finished on eight-under-par 208.
A team's lowest two individual scores counted each round and Balmore had tallies of 143, 136 and 139 for a total of 14-under-par 418.
St Germain en Laye scored 137, 135 and 145 for 417.
Germany's Hubbelrath finished third on 421.
The winning team each year is allowed to defend the title the following year which explains why France had two teams in the field. Defending champions Racing Club de France finished joint fifth on 431.
England's Hayling Golf Club (442) finished 13th; County Sligo (Ireland) 16th on 447, and Radyr (Wales) finished 19th with a 449 total in a field of 23 teams
Chris Maclean had rounds of 70, 69 and 69 for 208.
James Wilson, who plays off +1.8, shot gross scores of 78, 67 and 70 to be placed joint 10th on one-under 215. Pity about that first round!
Neil McConnochie, who has a handicap of 1.3, finished tied 26th in the individual standings with rounds of 73, 73 and 76 for 222.
Only his first round was a counting score.

Paul Lawrie sharing fourth place in Portugal

Masters after rounds of 66, 66 and 65

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Anders Hansen announced his retirement at the Portugal Masters in 2015 but 12 months later here he is, firing a brilliant nine-under-par 62 to take a share of the lead into the final round of the tournament at Victoria Clube de Golfe, Vilamoura.

The 46-year-old Dane, pictured, hung up his spikes after 419 events and three wins as he finished in a tie for 22nd last season, although the door was always open for a return as he is exempt due to his place in the top 40 on the career money list.
This week is his fifth event of 2016 with his European Tour Membership secured but, even if he were to win, the Dane would not consider making a full-time return, and a win would be no mean feat with a hungry and impressive group occupying the upper echelons of the leaderboard.
Mikko Korhonen is playing for his card at 116th place on the Race to Dubai, and the Finn signed for a 64 to sit alongside Hansen at 18 under, a shot clear of three-time Major Championship winner Padraig Harrington.
Defending champion Andy Sullivan, fellow Englishman Chris Paisley and Scot Paul Lawrie (66-66-65) are sharing fourth place at 16-under-par 197, a shot clear of another Scot in Marc Warren (63-65-70).
Birdies on the first, second, fifth, 11th, 12th, 14th, 15th, 17th and 18th resulted in Hansen's second 62 in 1,499 rounds on Tour, and he revealed he will not feel any pressure going into the final day.
"I didn't really have a strategy," he said. "Just go out and play and just try to enjoy it and hit good shots and it turned out alright.
"When I decided to retire it was a full retirement and then the top 40 career money-winners' table came in, so I had to play five this year and that's why I've been doing this.
"I'm very, very happy with my life. I'm very happy where I am and there is no re-think about starting playing golf again, I'm very happy the way it is.
"It probably helps a little bit because it doesn't really matter to me either way. It is what it is. I'm not going to come back and play full-time. That decision has been made so I'm just enjoying being here.
"It's nice to know that I can still do it, even though I'm not playing too much golf anymore. It's a strange feeling to go out and shoot nine under in my position, it really is."
Korhonen birdied three of his first five holes and while he dropped a shot on the sixth, the 36 year old bounced back with a birdie on the seventh to turn in 32.
Further gains followed on the 11th, 13th, 15th and 17th to put him in pole position to make the top 111 and retain his playing privileges, although he was not allowing complacency to sneak in.
"I just go one day at a time, one shot if I can, and try not to think about it," he said. "Of course it's in the mind but I do not think about it too much.

"It was great. I played solid, putted well. Nothing special but a really good round.

"So far, so good but tomorrow to go, so we'll see."

Harrington hit the front as he turned in 31 but two birdies and two bogeys saw him reeled in on the back nine as he signed for a 67.
Following on from his stunning 61 on Friday, Sullivan appeared out of sorts and was level par for his round after 13 holes in favourable conditions and on a course with little or no rough. A hat-trick of birdies from the 15th then fired him up the leaderboard before a closing bogey.

Paisley had six birdies in a blemish-free 65, while Lawrie signed for the same score with the help of an eagle on the 12th.

Warren battled to a 70 with a hat-trick of bogeys from the ninth stalling his progress, and he was a shot clear of countryman Stephen Gallacher, Spaniard Nacho Elvira, Swede Jens Fahrbring, American David Lipsky and England's Callum Shinkwin.

Trevor Fisher Jnr at 13 under, Jason Scrivener at 12 under, and Graeme Storm and Oliver Fisher a further shot back will all face a nerve-wracking final day as they battle to keep their cards.

Daniel Young finishes T17 as Matt Wallace

chalks up sixth win of Alps Tour season
Matt Wallace with the Alps Tour Grand Final trophy. Picture by Tristan Jones

Englishman Matt Wallace from Moor Park, Hertfordshire completed a sensational Alps Tour season by chalking up his sixth victory in the Grand Final over 72 holes at Miglianico Golf and Country Club, Italy.
Wallace, who wins promotion to the Challenge Tour alongwith the others in top five of the Alps Tour Order of Merit, plus a cheque for 9,750 euros, had rounds of 63, 70, 66 and 68 for a 17-under-par total of 267.
He won by one shot from Frenchman Richard Jouven who scored 67, 66, 69 and 66 for 268. He earned 6,500 euros.
Scot Daniel Young from Perth, slipped down the leaderboard with a one-over-par closing round of 72 to finish T17 on nine-under 275 with rounds of 71, 65, 67 and 72. He earned 1,007 euros, considerably less than he would have received had he been able to maintain his second and third-round scoring standard.
Wallace crushing the Alps Tour opposition all season like nobody before: six victories and, icing on the cake, and the most important, this one:
“It has been hard because I knew everybody will attack from all guys looking for the Challenge Tour card. And my objective was to win the tournament indeed. This was the most difficult victory of the year,” said Wallace.

Runner-up Richard Jouven smiled too in this sunny evening. It is his best performance in a professional tournament since he turned pro at the beginning of the season.

Some second places strongly look like victories:
" I tried to do not think that I was fighting against Wallace today. As I didn’t play with him, it was easier. But it is true that the guy intimidates us, he is so good in all aspects of the game. And yes, it’s almost a victory for me,” said the Frenchman.
In a clubhouse corner this evening, the only sad face is Franck Daux, who said "ciao” to his dream of playing on the Challenge Tour next year, having missed out on the last card by 25 points - a fate made all the more difficult to swallow as he shot -6 today to finish 14th in the final  tournament. This is a cruel scenario because Daux had been in the top five all the long Alps Tour season.

The one who came to take the fifth spot, on his native soil, was Federico Maccario. The Italian finished fifth, four shots behind Wallace.
“Today has probably been the longest day of my career. During the first three days it was ok. But today, I feel that the last five or six holes were never ending,” said Maccario

Enrico Di Nitto, Federico Maccario, Tom Shadbolt and Victor Perez will play next season on the Challenge Tour along with Matt Wallace, who, whenever he had the opportunity, was a great ambassador for the Alps Tour.
The winner this evening, the celebrated and admired, Matt Wallace leaves the Alps Tour with his trophy but his heart is a little heavy: “The Alps Tour will remain in my memory forever. For the friends I met, for the countries I visited. I've played on the European Tour, I've played on the Challenge Tour but I never experienced such an atmosphere as there is among the players on the Alps Tour.”

Matt Wallace is the image of the Champion. His victory today is the image of his season.

Russell Knox sharing second place, four off

lead at Kuala Lumpur

ASIAN TOUR NEWS RELEASE
Kuala Lumpur: India’s Anirban Lahiri romped to a four-shot lead at the CIMB Classic today, firing a brilliant seven-under-par 65 in the third round to set himself up for a maiden US PGA Tour title.
The reigning Asian Tour number one enjoyed another birdie binge with nine on his card against a double bogey at TPC Kuala Lumpur to lead from defending champion Justin Thomas of the United States and Scot Russell Knox, who shot a 71 and 68 respectively in the US$7 million tournament sanctioned by the Asian Tour and US PGA Tour.
Japanese star Hideki Matsuyama battled to a 69 to share of fourth place with Americans James Hahn (69) and Derek Fathauer (68) while the day’s low round belonged to current Asian Tour Order of Merit leader Scott Hend of Australia, who sizzled with a 63 to move up to joint 17th position.
Two back at the start of the day, the 29-year-old Lahiri was delighted he finished the day with four birdies over his last five holes as he erased the disappointment of dropping shots late in his opening two rounds.
“It's very important. Obviously it was on my mind today, it was on my mind since I finished my round yesterday actually. I was determined to keep my focus right through the 18 holes,” said Lahiri.
With his best finish to date on the US PGA Tour being tied fifth at the 2015 US PGA Championship, Lahiri is hoping to join countryman Arjun Atwal as the only Indians to win on the US PGA Tour but he knows he must go low again on Sunday.
Title-holder Thomas birdied his closing five holes after being four-over through 12 holes to stay on Lahiri’s coat=-tail. “It was really just terrible golf for the first 13 holes. It was a very weird feeling. I just put myself so far behind the eight-ball,” said the 23-year-old, who is ranked 35th in the world.
“It was great to have that finish. I gave myself a chance. I hope I can ride the momentum into tomorrow. Anirban is playing great. It's the best I've seen him play. He just made it look so simple. I didn't realise he made nine birdies until we finished,” said Thomas, who won last year’s CIMB Classic with a tournament record of 26-under-262 last year.
World number 20, Knox, a winner twice on the US PGA Tour victory, is prepared to launch a final day charge after failing to hit his stride for much of the third day. “I didn't feel great over the ball. So it was a bit of a struggle. My body just didn't feel as good as yesterday.
“This is a course where you've got to play great on the last day to win because there's going to be people that do it. I need to be super aggressive tomorrow,” said the Florida-based man from Inverness.
