FOUR-WAY TIE FOR DESERT SPRINGS LEAD
Four players share the five-under-par lead after the first round of the HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour’s season-ending Matchroom Sport Tour Championship at Desert Springs Resort in Spain.
Haydn McCullen was the first to sign for an opening-round 67 and he was soon joined in the clubhouse by Joe Dean. James Maw, winner at Hawkstone Park, became the third player to reach five under and in the final group of the day Curtis Griffiths carded six birdies before dropping a shot at the last to make it a quartet of leaders after 18 holes.
Five players are just a single shot back on four under, including three of the season’s previous winners; Richard James (Aberdovey Golf Club), Jonathan Caldwell (Clandeyboye) and Chris Gane (Lefthandedgolf at Silvermere).
Griffiths (Wentworth) sits third on the Race To Desert Springs Order of Merit, from which the top five after this week’s Tour Championship will earn a Challenge Tour category for 2017. With £20,000 going to the winner in Spain, all those who had earned the right to play in the season closer know that a victory could catapult them into the promotion positions.
For Griffiths, a win isn’t a necessity and his strong start to the tournament makes him a clear favourite to finish inside the top five. Maw (Rockliffe Hall) lies seventh on the money list and would be disappointed if a top five finish at Desert Springs wasn’t enough to move up significantly up the standings.
McCullen (Delamere Forest) is searching for his first win of the season and will have to find it if he is to earn progression to Europe’s second-tier tour via the EuroPro.
Dean (Hillsborough Golf Club) is in contention to take home the Rookie of the Year trophy and began the week 11th on the Race To Desert Springs but needs a minimum of a top two finish to move into the Challenge Tour positions.
The Matchroom Sport Tour Championship continues with round two on Thursday before Friday’s final 18 holes, which will be filmed for a two-hour highlights package to air on Sky Sports on Tuesday, November 1 and networks worldwide.

M and H Logistics Scottish PGA championship at King's Course

Paul O'Hara, Gareth Wright share lead

going into final round at Gleneagles

PGA NEWS RELEASE
By NATHANIEL SYLVESTER
Paul O'Hara and Gareth Wright are locked together at the top of the leaderboard heading into the final round of the £50,000 M and H Logistics Scottish PGA Championship at Gleneagles.
On 13-under-par, the pair are two ahead of Louis Gaughan, with Sam Binning a further two strokes back as the event's 100th staging heads for an exciting conclusion on the King's Course.
Wright, the 2014 winner, briefly lost the lead he'd held since opening with a stunning 62 before picking up two shots in the last three holes as the West Linton professional signed for a 68.
"I'll take that today as I went down with the lurgy after I went back to my hotel yesterday afternoon," said Wright, who failed by the narrowest of margins to make the cut in last week's British Masters at The Grove.
"I felt hot, cold and sweaty out there and have lost the feeling in my arms. I was really out of sorts for a bit early on the back nine and I don't know if that was down to feeling tired."
The Welshman insisted he was unconcerned about having seen his sizeable advantage from the first round whittled away by the dangerous O'Hara over the last two days.
"No matter whether you start with level-par or nine-under, the aim is to give yourself a chance of winning heading into the last round and I'm happy to be that position going into tomorrow," said Wright, a member of last year's history-making Great Britain side in the PGA Cup in California.
"I've played steady golf to shoot one-under and three-under over the past two days and I'm certainly looking forward to the final round."
O'Hara, winner of both the P and H Championship at The Renaissance and the Scottish Young Pros at West Lothian earlier in the year, signed for six birdies as he recovered from being one-over early on to post a 66.
"I played pretty steady again, hitting fairways and greens most of the way round," reported the 30-year-old, who is attached to North Lanarkshire Leisure and based at Lochview Golf Centre in Coatbridge.
The three-time Scottish Amateur Championship finalist had a chance to hold the outright lead heading into the final circuit but "over-borrowed" with a seven-foot eagle attempt at the last in picturesque Perthshire.
"This is a prestigious tournament and it would be one of my biggest wins if I can pull it off tomorrow," added O'Hara. "I've won a lot of tournaments over the years and I'm happy with my position with a round to go."
Gaughan, who is bidding to join Eric Brown and Bernard Gallacher in taking this trophy back to Bathgate, ensured the final day won't necessarily be a straight shoot-out between the joint-leaders as he carded a 68.
Out in one-over, the 23-year-old dug deep to come home in four-under, with a par save at the 14th, where he made eagle with his second ball after losing his first one, proving just as important as birdies at the 10th, 12th, 17th and 18th.
"I think that's the first time I've been in a final group and I both enjoyed it and felt quite comfortable," said Gaughan, who is hoping to use the experience he gained from being in challenging positions in both the P and H Championship and the Northern Open earlier this year to good use on the last day.

It seems unlikely that both O'Hara and Wright will fall away but, if they do, then Binning is still in the mix after he carded a 68 at the venue where his grandfather's ashes were scattered on the 14th hole.
Robert Arnott, who won the Senior PGA Professional Championship at Foxhills earlier in the year, carded the day's best score - a seven-under-par 64 that ended in style with an eagle-3 at the last.
"It was quite a surprise as I've been popping tablets like you never know for a sore back and hip," said the 53-year-old Bishopbriggs Golf Range pro of his eye-catching effort.

Flawless Heraty claims emotional win at Sahara Kuwait

REPORT BY VIREN VARMA
KUWAIT CITY — With thoughts of his ailing father occupying his mind, Joe, Heraty kept his composure to win the inaugural Sahara Kuwait Championship, providing a fitting climax to a fantastic week of golf at the MENA Golf Tour’s inaugural event in the city today.
The 25-year-old Englishman from Leeds closed with a bogey-free,  five-under 65 to finish at 13-under par, two clear of his compatriot Daniel Owen, who signed for a brilliant six-under 64 to climb up the leaderboard.
It was Chile’s Matias Calderon, who made the biggest move, firing a brilliant 62 that matched the course record set on Monday by Heraty as he shared the leading amateur award with Brazil’s Tiago Lobo.
In a reflection on the rising standards of amateurs on the MENA Golf Tour, the South American duo joined England’s Jordan Garnish in a tie for third overall on 10-under.
It was young Heraty, whose father was diagnosed with brain tumour last week, who took centre-stage with a flawless round to get over the line for his maiden win on the MENA Golf Tour.
“This is for you, Dad,” an emotional Heraty said after receiving the winner’s trophy and a cheque for $9,000 from Yousef Abdulaziz Al Qatami and Wael Abdulrahman Al Welayti, both members of the Sahara Kuwait’s golf advisory committee.
“It feels just unbelievable at the moment to what I have achieved. It was a tough week, but I managed to keep my emotions in check. Made lots of birdies and didn’t hit any disastrous shots,” said the Yorkshireman.
England’s Owen also went bogey-free, picking up two shots on the front nine and four on the back nine, his flawless round showing it’s just a matter of time before the Bahrain-based professional inscribes his name on the MENA Golf Tour trophy.
Young Lobo was equally delighted to share leading amateur award with Calderon, whose course record-equalling 62 was studded with nine birdies and one bogey.
“It was a pleasure to play on this course which was set up nicely. I drove the ball well and created lots of birdie opportunities with my wedges. I may not have struck the ball that well in the final round, but managed to hole more putts which kept the round going,” added the 18-year-old Sao Paulo native who is based in Dubai.

The MENA Golf Tour travels to Oman next week for the Ghala Open to be held in Muscat from October 24 to 26. The event will be followed by the season-ending Tour Championship a week later.
