British Masters report and final totals

Noren wins from Wiesberger and Westwood

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Alex Noren won the British Masters supported by Sky Sports by two shots to secure his third European Tour title of the season.
The Swede, who has also tasted victory at the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open and Omega European Masters this year, produced a closing 69 at The Grove to finish on 18 under par, two strokes ahead of nearest challenger Bernd Wiesberger.
Home favourite Lee Westwood finished third after posting a superb final-round 67 to reach 15 under.
Play was suspended early on Sunday due to flooded greens but the fourth round got under way at 10.05 local time, with some players starting at the tenth tee.
Beginning the day with a three-shot lead, Noren made the perfect start to his fourth round, notching birdies at each of his first two holes to climb to 18 under.
Noren dropped his first shot of the day at the eighth after narrowly missing his ten foot birdie putt.
The 34 year old then saw his advantage reduced to a single shot when he carded another bogey at the 11th.
And he dropped into a share of the lead when Austrian Wiesberger holed his 12-foot birdie putt at the long 15th to join him on 16 under.
But Noren regained the outright lead immediately, notching a birdie at the 15th to get back to 17 under.
After safely parring the next two holes, Noren finished with a tap-in birdie at the last to clinch his seventh European Tour title in all.

Scottish students' tournament final totals at Fairmont St Andrews

Stirling students Maclean and Batty retain Fife

titles at Fairmont St Andrews

The final round of the 12th BUCS/SSS Fife Tournament was underpinned by low scoring and, almost, a dry day. With valuable Order of Merit points available, not to mention the title itself, players brought their best game to the Torrance course.
Stirling students Chris Maclean (pictured right) and Gemma Batty repeated their wins of last year in the tournament.
The women’s competition saw the final group extend their gap to the rest of the field with very solid golf from each of them. Lieve van Veggel (St. Andrews) shot a level par 74 to finish the tournament in 3rd place at twelve over.
Sinead Sexton (Stirling) had another very solid level par round and at one stage was only one shot off the lead.
However, a bogey on 15 ended her challenge and she finished in 2nd place on nine over.
The winner of the competition, edging Sinead by 2 shots, was Gemmy Batty (Stirling), pictured left. Gemma’s two under front nine featured four birdies and a solid one over 38 coming back was enough to secure herself the title, her second Fife Tournament success in a row.
The set up of the front nine saw a number of the leading men’s players attempt to put pressure on overnight leader Chris Maclean (Stirling). While the back nine, and some very challenging rain, put paid to the majority of the challengers, John Murphy (Maynooth) recorded a round of the day 70 to move himself up to 5th place. Alasdair McDougall (Stirling) had a third solid round, a 73 leaving him at four over and in fourth place.
The first of the podium positions was taken by Matthew Myers (St Andrews) who was one of three players to shoot one under 71s, his leaving him three over for the tournament.
However, the overnight top two players worked hard to see of those challengers and while Sean Flanagan (Maynooth) was never quite able to put real pressure on the leader, he did enough with a par at the last to secure second place at two over par.
The winner, and stand-out player since his two under 70 in the dark on the first day, was Chris Maclean, who shot another under par round, with a 71 to leave him one under for the tournament and retaining the title he won last year.

East Tennessee State are in third place at 13 under par.
But Charlotte are not doing so well. They are two OVER par and in 11th of 15 place.

Langer's four-birdie finish for two-stroke seniors' lead, heads for fifth win of season

CARY, North Carolina (AP) Bernhard Langer birdied the final four holes for his second straight 5-under 67 and a two-stroke lead Saturday in the US PGA Senior Tour Champions' SAS Championship.
Langer had a bogey-free round at Prestonwood in the regular-season finale. The 59-year-old Florida-based German star leads the tour with four victories and earnings of $2,512,659. He won the 2012 event and tied for third the last two years.
''I played pretty steady golf throughout the whole day,'' Langer said. ''Had to be very patient in the middle of my round because just the putts didn't go in. I didn't hit my irons really close, had a few chances here and there, but just didn't make anything. Then toward the end I hit the ball really well. Hitting irons a little closer and finally made some good putts coming in.''
Langer is tied for second with Lee Trevino with 29 career victories on the 50-and-over tour. Hale Irwin is the leader with 45.
''Two shots is nothing,'' Langer said. ''You can lose two shots in one hole. You make a bogey and the other guy makes a birdie and it's gone. You still have to have the mindset of going out and playing hopefully the best round or one of the best rounds of the day.''
Larry Mize and first-round leader Doug Garwood were tied for second at 8 under. Mize had a 69, and Garwood followed his opening 65 with a 72. Jeff Sluman (67) and Senior British Open winner Paul Broadhurst (69) were 7 under.
The top 72 players on the money list after the tournament - and one player in the top 10 in the event but outside the top 72 for the season - will get spots in the Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs opener - the PowerShares QQQ Championship at Sherwood in California on Oct. 28-30.
Langer began the late with a 12-footer on the par-4 15th, and got up-and-down for birdie from over the green on the par-5 16th.
''Driver, 3-wood straight at the pin and rolled through the green into the rough and had a very tough pitch because it was straight downhill,'' Langer said. ''Played it pretty decent, got it to about 5 feet.''
He added 14-footers on par-3 17th par par-4 18th.
''That was nice because I hit a good putt, but it didn't turn until the very, very end and just snuck in on the high side,'' Langer said about 17. ''That was nice to see that one turn in. And then 18 was a perfect putt, went right in the middle.''
Defending champion Tom Lehman was tied for 10th at 4 under after a 68.

Paul Casey, Martin Laird in the mix as Safeway Open round 3 still to finish

Johnson Wagner leads the Safeway Open after the third round was suspended due to rain.

In the midst of his third straight consecutive round of solid golf, Johnson Wagner moved into the lead at the US PGA Tour's Safeway Open as the third round was suspended due to rain.
Round three at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, California will resume at 7:40 a.m. local time Sunday.
Wagner moved into a one-shot lead over Patton Kizzire and 36-hole leader Scott Piercy after a birdie at No. 12 got him to 15 under overall.
Kizzire got off to a hot start in his round, making five birdies in his first eight holes to vault up the leaderboard. He cooled off after making the turn and posted just one birdie and one bogey on the back before rain ended his round with Kizzire on the 17th hole.
Piercy, who scorched Silverado for a course-record 62 and then posted a second-round 67, never got it going Saturday. He managed just one birdie and one bogey, sitting at 1 over through 15 holes for his round before the rain came. Piercy was one of just two players in the top 15 to be over par in his third round.
Wagner is looking for his fourth PGA Tour victory, but his first since the Sony Open in Hawaii.
Phil Mickelson posted a 3-under 69 for the third straight day and kept himself within striking distance at 9 under, six shots off the lead. Justin Thomas is also at 9 under after shooting a 6-under 66 in his third round to share 10th with five other players.
Paul Casey is in fourth, two shots off the lead, and was 1 under through 15 holes Saturday.
Scotland's Martin Laird is lying fifth, 12 under par overall. He has played 16 holes of his third round.
