Only four Scots make the cut on EuroPro Tour
NEWS RELEASE BY NICK TEALE
Jonathan
Caldwell shot a seven-under-par second round to lead the Clipper
Logistics Championship by two shots on eight under par at Moor Allerton
Golf Club, Leeds today.
The
Northern Irishman, attached to Clandeyboye, finished second to Chris
Gane after a play-off at Army Golf Club last month and a consistent
season on the HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour means he is in a
position whereby a win
would see him leap into the top five on the Race To Desert Springs,
from which the top five at the end of the season earn a 2017 Challenge
Tour card.
He
is trailed by one stroke by last year’s winner of this event, Mark
Laskey (Brocket Hall/Team Honma), who has carded rounds of 68 and 67 on
the par-71 course for a tournament score of seven under.
Ashton
Turner (Kenwick Park Golf Club) and Alex Wrigley (Hartlepool Golf Club)
share third on six under, two back, with three golfers on five under.
Only four Scots beat the cut at 143 - Louis Gaughan (68-72 for 140 and T21), Conor O'Neil (70-71 for 141 and T27), and John Henry (73-69 for 142) and Paul McKechnie (70-74 for 142), both tied 35th.
The
Clipper Logistics Championship is the final regular-season event before
the Matchroom Sport Championship at Desert Springs Resort in Spain in
October. Only the top 60 on the Race To Desert Springs Order of Merit
receive an
invite to the big-money tour finale meaning this was the final
tournament for those outside of that position to move up the rankings.
Zack Saltman (Archerfield Links Golf Club) was 60th before this week’s tournament, but having missed the one-over-par cut looks set to be dislodged.
Sandeep
Grewal was one behind Saltman on the tour rankings but as one of three
players at five under this week has assured himself an invite to the
Tour Championship, provided he completes the tournament.
The
Clipper Logistics Championship concludes on Friday, with the final
round to be filmed for a two-hour highlights package which will air on
Sky Sports on Tuesday, October 4. Live scoring is available at
www.europrotour.com and spectator entry is free of charge.

Nairn start Northern Counties Cup defence with big-margin win over Eriskay
Nairn, despite lacking two of last year's title-winning team,Sandy Scott and Bruce Thomson, made an impressive start to their defence of the Northern Counties Cup at Royal Dornoch Golf Club today.
The team of four chalked up the double foursomes match-play tournament's biggest winning margin in years, beating Eriskay by 15 holes.
Moray, on the other hand, had one of the toughest matches, against Murcar Links. The match went right down to the last pair on the last hole where Kyle Godsman holed a 10 foot putt to put the Lossiemouth men through.
Nairn Dunbar, last year's beaten finalist, advanced by beating a strong Duff House Royal team by three holes.

Sandy Lyle defends World Hickory Open title at Panmure on October 11-12
NEWS RELEASE
On October 11, the world’s top hickory golfers will tee off in the LinkedGolfers World Hickory Open, including the first British winner of the Masters and 2014 winner of the World Hickory Open, Sandy Lyle.
“I’m
really excited to be returning to the World Hickory Open,” said Sandy
Lyle, who won the 2014 title when the two-day tournament was last held at
Panmure, near Carnoustie.
“I was a relative hickory novice when I first played
in this tournament two years ago but I’ve now been playing with
hickories for almost five years so I’m looking forward to testing my
hickory skills across Panmure’s historic fairways and greens once
again.”
Sandy
will be joined at Panmure by several other previous winners of the
World Hickory Open, including hickory specialist Paolo Quirici from
Switzerland; Rick Valentine, Director of Golf at Loretto School Golf
Academy; and last year’s winner, Norfolk-based golf professional Andrew
Marshall.
“There are several other golf professionals, hickory experts
and low handicap golfers who can’t be ruled out of becoming the overall
champion,” stressed Lionel Freedman, co-founder and chair of the World
Hickory Open.
As
well as the trophy for the overall winner of the World Hickory Open,
the Archie Baird Trophy will be awarded to the best amateur.
“The past
winners of this trophy – Rymer Smith from Buckinghamshire Golf Club and
Cliff Martin of Bel Air Golf Club in Los Angeles - will both be
competing in this year’s World Hickory Open, along with many other
excellent amateurs,” added Lionel. “As in previous years, the Archie
Baird Trophy will be as hotly contested as the overall title.”

Connor Syme 66 and Grant Forrest 68 in first round
Scotland lead Men's World Amateur Team
Championship in Mexico
RIVIERA MAYA, Mexico -- Connor Syme, pictured below, shot a 6-under 66 to help Scotland take a one-stroke lead over Australia after the first round of the World Amateur Team Championship for the Eisenhower Trophy.
Walker Cup player Grant Forrest added a 68 at Iberostar Playa Paraiso to give Scotland a 10-under 134 total, with only the best two scores counting for the three-man teams. Robert MacIntyre had a non-counting 69.
"The players know they have a good chance to do well here, and they are all pretty highly ranked in the world," Scottish captain Claire Queen said.
"It's been a really good first day, and that will give them more belief for the remainder of the championship."
Syme, 20, topped the individual standings along with Ireland's Paul McBride and Poland's Adrian Meronk. A range keeper at Drumoig Golf Centre near St Andrews, Syme won the 2016 Australian Amateur.
"The key was to get it right off the tee, and then it would give you some chances," Syme said. "There's a few par 5s you can get up on in two, and my strength today was accuracy off the tee, so I had a lot of good opportunities."
Cameron Davis led Australia with a 67, Harrison Endycott had a 68, and U.S. Amateur champion Curtis Luck shot 69, also opening at Iberostar Playa Paraiso, which is in the course rotation with Mayakoba El Camaleon.
"We've come here with high expectations," Australian captain Matt Cutler said. "We told the guys not to look at the scoreboards because on Day 1 there are two different courses, and it can change so quickly."
Spain was third at 8 under at Iberostar Playa Paraiso. Mario Galiano shot 67, Manuel Elvira 69 and Ivan Cantero 71.
"It is important to post a good score early because of the weather, because it is so hot," Spanish captain Luis Mendez said. "Playing in the morning is an advantage, and you have less hot weather."
Ireland are tied fourth on 136 after rounds of 66 from Paul McBride and a 70 from Stuart Grehan. Jack Hume (75) had the non-counting score for Ireland.
The two-time defending champion United States are tied for seventh at 5 under. Oklahoma's Brad Dalke opened with a 67 at Mayakoba El Camaleon, Stanford's Maverick McNealy had a 70, and Texas' Scottie Scheffler a 73.
"I was a little nervous before this round because this is such a huge event," Dalke said. "We want to defend it for a third time. I was nervous, but once I got out there I felt comfortable."
England are tied 11 on 139 with a 69 from Alfie Plant and a 70 from Scott Gregory. Jamie Bower (73) had the non-counting score.
Wales are T34 on 144 with a 69 from David Boote and a 75 from Josh Davies. Owen Edwards (76) had the non-counting Welsh score.
