Molinari holds off Willett to win Italian Open

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Francesco Molinari held his nerve in a final-day battle with Danny Willett to claim a historic victory at the Italian Open.
The home hero recorded a closing 65 to get to 22 under and beat Willett by one shot, becoming the first Italian to win his national Open twice since the event became part of the European Tour in 1972.
The 2006 champion also became the first Italian to win any European Tour event twice as he claimed his fourth win and his first since the 2012 Reale Seguros Open de España
Followed by an enormous gallery, Molinaro turned in 31 and held a four-shot lead with six holes to play but Masters Tournament winner Willett is made of stern stuff and went birdie-eagle on the 13th and 14th to cut the gap to one.

There were nervy moments from both players in the closing stretch but Molinari held on to become the second home player to win their national Open in as many weeks after Joost Luiten's victory at the KLM Open.
"It's been a rollercoaster," he said. "It's amazing to see this amount of people out here supporting me.
"I had the ideal start, I couldn't start any better. When I birdied 12 I got four shots [clear] and thought maybe I could relax a bit and I got punished straight away. Coming in I had nothing left, I was just playing with my soul.
"I was hitting horrible shots but somehow I managed to bring it in."
Spaniard Nacho Elvira and England's Chris Paisley shared third at 18 under, two shots clear of English pair Richard Bland and David Horsey.
Molinari put his approach on the first to 15 feet and holed a curling right-to lefter for an eagle and a two-shot lead.
Willett responded with a birdie on the second but Molinari followed him in from five feet and sent the home crowd into raptures once more.
An approach to tap-in range on the fourth from Willett cut the gap to one but Molinari holed a 15-footer on the sixth and then chipped to two feet on the ninth to turn with a three-shot lead.
Willett missed a golden chance to apply the pressure after putting his approach to three feet on the 11th and Molinari punished him on the next, putting his tee-shot to six feet and moving four ahead.
There was a two-shot swing on the next, though, as Molinari left his second shot short of the green and missed from three feet with Willett making a birdie.

Molinari picked a shot back up on the 14th but Willett hit a stunning second shot to 12ft for an eagle and all of a sudden, the gap was cut to one.
Both men were ragged off the tee on the last but Molinari produced a sensational approach and Willett a brilliant clutch putt for a pair of pars that sparked emotional celebrations.
Elvira finished with a 65 while Paisley recorded a 68, with countrymen Bland and Horsey signing for rounds of 69 and 65 respectively.
Spanish duo Jorge Campillo and Alejandro Cañizares were then at 15 under alongside England's Tommy Fleetwood, Scot Scott Jamieson and Frenchman Alexander Levy.

Wright missed chance of new Brora record

By ROBIN WILSON
Jeff Wright (Forres) ticked off another successful season when he won the inaugural North District Champions of Champions tournament played over James Braid's classic links at Broraon Sunday.
Most of the district's champions were in attendance and also entitled to take part were individual club champions although the representation of these was disappointing, just 13 champions accepting the invitation from a possible 61 – Jonathon Keith (Inverness), Kieran MacKay (Tain), Darren Hexley (Golspie), Alan Larnoch (Wick), John Dingwall (Kinloss), David Borthwick (Kingussie), David Pearson (Royal Dornoch), Bryan Fotheringham (Forres) Douglas Thorburn (Thurso) Kevin Bartlet (Strathpeffer Spa), Jordan Milne (Elgin) Steven Rendal (Kirkwall)  and Chris Gaittens (Fortrose and aRosemarkie) were those who played.
The North executive will continue with the competition in the hope it will rise in stature as it will entitle the winner qualification into the prestigious annual Scottish Champion of Champions' event.
Earning his place into next season's Scottish event is the Brora winner from Sunday, Jeff Wright (Forres). His participation at Brora was the reward for winning the North's 72 Hole David Blair Championship last month at Inverness.
At Inverness Wright broke par in three of his four rounds and at Brora, playing the course for  the first time, he broke par twice, two 66s for an eight-shot win over his club mate and Forres club champion, Bryan Fotheringham.
Fotheringham is a joint course record holder at Brora, his 65 set earlier in the season in the James Braid tournament with Chris Mailley (Royal Dornoch). Wright just missed matching the record in the first round with his five birdie and one bogey card of 66 (34-32) but in round two he had a new record in his grasp at seven under par with just two holes to play.
Wright was one under par through six holes and two under after nine before staring his inward half by almost holing his second shot from the rough at the 10th hole. His eagle did come at the par five 11th hole after holing from twenty feet and he proceeded to seven under par with successive birdies on the 14th and 15th holes.
Parring the 16th, he missed the green with his second to the 17th to take a bogey 5 but still only required a final hole par three to set a new record of 64.
Unfortunately Wright's  tee shot came up short and ended up in the deep hollow below the green. Like so many other before him his half-hit wedge rolled back to his feet for him to result in the inevitable double bogey 5 for his second 66 in two halves of 33.
Forres champion, Fotheringham, bogeyed the last three holes in his opening 71 (33-38) but broke par in round two with a 69 ((34-35). His improved second round claimed second place on 140 aggregate count back over the North's Under-18 Order of Merit winner Jamie MacKintosh (The Nairn) (69-71). He pipped the North Order of Merit winner John Forbes (Inverness), also 69 and 71, the separation going down to their final six holes, MacKintosh 21 to Forbes' 23.

Dumfriesshire beat the odds - and Aberdeenshire

- to win Scottish title for first time

Jim Burns of "Scottish Golf" and the happy Dumfriesshire team and officials.

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Dumfriesshire unexpectedly beat Aberdeenshire 5-4 in the title decider between the two 100% winning sides on the third and final day at Aboyne Golf Club today.
And so a county with only 10 golf clubs from whom to choose their team were crowned Scottish women's county champions for the first time since the champions of the South Division were admitted to the finals in the 1972.
The Doonhamers gained what proved to be the decisive edge by taking the morning foursomes 2-1 when Sammy Leslie and Shannon McWilliam were the only home winners.
Aberdeenshire needed to take the afternoon's six singles by a two-point margin to overturn the deficit and win the title for the first time since 1986.
With three singles to finish, the overall score was level at 3-3 with Aberdeenshire ahead in two of the ties still to be settled.
Shire county champion Sammy Leslie, one up after 14 on Jordana Graham, could not hold her opponent at bay over the closing holes and Graham's one-hole victory tipped the sales in Dumfriesshire's favour.
Mirren Fraser, only 17, got the winning fifth point by beating Carol Wilson 4 and 2, and Dumfriesshire could afford to lose the last singles tie to finish, Donna Pocock beating Katie Malcolm  by one hole.
The joint MVPs of the tournament with six wins out of six apiece were the Dumfriesshire pair of Gemma Batty and her foursomes partner Jordana Graham. Mirren Fraser, only 17, was not far behind with 5.5pt out of six.
All in all a splendid performance by the South of Scotland champions.
Midlothian finished third, thanks to a 5.5-3.5 win over Dunbartonshire and Argyll today.
D and A did not win a match over the three days.

"Beef" Johnston now two off pace in Web.com

Tour's Finals event

FROM ESPN.COM
After scorching the Hillcrest Country Club course with opening rounds of 63 and 66, Andrew "Beef" Johnston could manage only a 70 on Saturday, falling from a two-shot 36-hole lead to being two shots off the pace after 54 holes of the second Web.com Tour's Finals event.
With 18 holes to play in Boise, Idaho, the jovial, burly, bearded Englishman is alone in fourth place, two shots behind co-leaders Michael Thompson and Scott Stallings and one shot behind Miguel Angel Carballo.
“It was slightly frustrating for me today," Johnston told PGATour.com. "I just felt like I did everything very average.”
After the conclusion of the four-event Web.com Tour Finals, 25 PGA Tour cards will be awarded. Johnston tied for 28th in the first event, and stands to move up significantly if he remains high on the leaderboard.
Johnston, who burst into the golf world's consciousness by winning this year's Spanish Open and placing eighth in The Open, made as many bogeys - four, including one on the 18th hole - as he did in the first two rounds. He was even par for the day when he went to the 15th hole. He drove just over the back of the 293-yard par-4, left his eagle chip just short and tapped in for birdie, smiling and giving the crowd a thumb's up.
At the par-5 16th he hit his drive a mammoth 386 yards, but missed the green from 174. Still, he was able to get up and down for birdie and close within one shot of the lead.
After parring the par-3 17th, he pulled his drive into the left rough on the closing par-4. He was able to muscle an iron onto the fringe, but he needed three more strokes to finish.
Johnston was asked about the possibility of making the 2018 European Ryder Cup team. “Chaos!" he exclaimed. "I’d love it, man. I’d have loved to play in this one in the States. I think it would have been really difficult for you guys,” he joked. “That’s what you want to do. You grow up watching it and you want to be a part of things like that.”

Paul Broadhurst in second place at Pebble

Beach behind Kevin Sutherland

PEBBLE BEACH, California. -- Kevin Sutherland birdied four of his last six holes at Pebble Beach for a 4-under 68 and the second-round lead in the US PGA Tour Champions' Nature Valley First Tee Open.
The 52-year-old Sutherland had an 8-under 135 total for a one-stroke lead over Paul Broadhurst, the Englishman who won the Senior British Open at Carnoustie in July.
From Sacramento, Sutherland is winless on the 50-and-over tour after winning once on the PGA Tour. In 2014, he set the senior tour record with a 13-under 59 in the Dick's Sporting Goods Open.
"This is always a special place to me," Sutherland said. "Being a northern California guy, Pebble is the mecca of golf for northern California golfers. The whole Carmel/Monterey area is always a special place, so to win any tournament here is quite an accomplishment and will definitely feel great."
Broadhurst followed his opening 66 with a 70 at Poppy Hills.
"Really enjoy the course," Broadhurst said. "Played it on Wednesday with Bernhard Langer in practice and really, really enjoy the course. Played a lot harder today. It was pretty calm on Wednesday. Today, it's quite a bit of wind out there, so makes it tricky."
Some players were unable to finish before dark. France's Jean Van de Velde was the top player still on the course at 3 under with two holes left.
Playing in the morning, Sutherland began his run on the par-4 fourth and also birdied the par-5 sixth, par-3 seventh and par-4 ninth. He played his opening nine in even par with two birdies and two bogeys.
"If you can get Pebble early, it's always great," Sutherland said. "Even on a good day, it's always nice to get Pebble early because the greens are a little softer and a little bit fresher as far as not as many spike marks and stuff. Any time you can get out there early at Pebble, it's great."
Woody Austin and Greg Kraft were tied for third at 5 under. Austin had a 69 at Poppy Hills, and Kraft shot 68 at Pebble Beach.
Langer was 4 under after a 69 at Pebble Beach. The 59-year-old German star leads the over-50s tour with four victories this season.
Vijay Singh was even par after a 68 at Poppy Hills.
John Daly was 5 over after his second 74, this one at Poppy Hills. Colin Montgomerie is not playing in this event.
