Yorkshire and Gloucestershire pull away at English county finals
Yorkshire and Gloucestershire pulled away from the field today after both won their third day matches in hot sunshine at English Women’s County Finals at Waterlooville Golf Club, Hampshire.
The Northern champions scored their third straight win, beating Buckinghamshire 7-2 and have amassed 6pts in the championship race. Gloucestershire are chasing them hard and after beating Surrey today, also by 7-2, have 5pts from two wins and a draw.
In the day’s other match Norfolk and Staffordshire halved. They both have 2pt, as do Surrey, while Buckinghamshire have one.
Yorkshire won two foursomes and five singles and their play today was notable for a string of big wins. Afterwards the team revealed their secret. It’s chocolate!
Each day the biggest win, morning and afternoon, is rewarded with a bar of chocolate and competition within the team is intense. So far Alison Knowles is leading the sweet stakes with four bars. She and Olivia Winning have picked up three from their foursomes wins - scoring 7/6, 6/4 and 5/4 - and this afternoon she collected a fourth from her 7/6 singles win.
Hannah Holden and Rochelle Morris have also claimed their rewards, while county champion Megan Garland (image © Leaderboard Photography) is pushing hard for a bar.
Team captain Dawn Clegg confirmed: “Chocolate is the incentive and it works extremely well!”
She went on: “They have been tremendous today, focussed and very intent on the job in hand. They are just amazing.”
Gloucestershire’s captain Andra Knight was equally pleased with her team’s performance which keeps them right in the hunt. "We were absolutely delighted,” she said. “To win is great but to win 7-2 is a fantastic result. It was wonderful to watch such excellent golf, particularly from Alex Giles who played a very tough opponent.”
Gloucestershire won all three foursomes games and their international player, Bethan Popel, quickly added her singles point with a 5/3 win. Giles (pictured left) followed up with a gritty win on the 18th secure the team’s victory.
“I had no idea that I would win the match but it’s pretty cool to have got the point for everyone,” she said. Further wins by Becky Gibbs and Ebonie Lewis extended the scoreline.
Norfolk and Staffordshire repeated their result of yesterday with another halved match – with a definite touch of déjà vu as Debbie Warren again decided the overall result for her team.
Staffordshire held the early advantage after winning the foursomes 2-1, but Norfolk were hot off the blocks in the afternoon. Amelia Williamson and Ellie Brown won the first two games 5/4, Tracey Williamson added her point on the 16th and Amy Taylor won the last to halve her game.
But once again, Norfolk were thwarted in their efforts for an overall win. Staffordshire’s Morgan Thomas stopped a fightback from her opponent to win 2/1, then, and in the decider, Debbie Warren won the 16th, 17th and 18th to finish two-up.
“It was almost exactly the same finish as yesterday, I was one down with three to play both days. Those last few holes are quite tight and it’s easy to have a shot leak away into the trees and that’s kind of what happened to my opponents.”
Staffordshire captain Julia Gaunt added: “A half is a good result, it’s not a loss and we’ll take it.”
For Norfolk captain Tracey Williamson it was a case of: “Nearly but not quite. It was looking promising at one time and it’s a little bit disappointing when you think it’s all going to come together, but that’s golf.”
Tomorrow Buckinghamshire play Surrey, Gloucestershire play Staffordshire; and Yorkshire play Norfolk.

Hazel and Jamie surge into top 10 of Duke of

York tournament with two-under-par 70s

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Hazel MacGarvie (Troon Ladies) and Jamie Stewart (Old Ranfurly) returned two of the best scores of the day - two-under-par 70s - to surge out of the pack into a share of eighth place in The Duke of York Young Champions' Trophy tournament at Royal Birkdale Golf Club, Lancashire.

Both improved by eight strokes on their first-round scores in this 54-hole event at an Open championship venue and are only six shots behind the leader, Markus Braadlie (Norway) who has scored 69-73 for two-under 142 and a one shot lead from Sami Valimaki (Finland) (72-71)
MacGarvie, pictured right, had halves of 35 studded with an eagle 3 at the 433yd 13th and birdies at the long sixth, short 14th and 15th. But for a double bogey 7 at the par-5 17th, the Ayrshire girl would have been within striking distance of the lead.
Stewart, pictured below, started with a double bogey 6 but bounced back with birdies at the fourth, fifth and seventh to turn in 34. He dropped one more shot, at the 10th, before finishing strongly with birdies at two-par 5 holes, the 13th and 17th.

The two other Scots in the field of 49 players did not enjoy such a revival in their fortunes.
Shannon McWilliam (Aboyne) is tied 32nd after scores of 81 and 78 for 159. Shannon's inward half of 42 included a quadruple bogey 7 at the short 14th.
Scottish U18 boys' champion Eric McIntosh (Bruntsfield Links) ran up a triple bogey 8 at the long 17th on his way to an 81, two worse than his first round. Eric is on 160, sharing 34th place.

SHEENA LETS IT SLIP CLOSE HOME AT

CALDY AND DROPS TO TIE FOR 12th

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Sheena Wood (Aberdeen Ladies) was in a challenging position at the Senior British women's open amateur championship today (WED) until she dropped four shots over the closing holes for a first-round score of three-over-par 76 and a share of 12th place at Caldy Golf Club, Lancashire.
Joint leaders on two-under-par 71 are Ireland's Laura Webb (East Berkshire) and Minna Kaarnalahti (Finland), a shot ahead of past champion Ann Lewis (Royal St David's).
Wood, pictured, bogeyed the second but birdies at the fourth and fifth got her out in one-under 35.
She was still one under par with five to play but then bogeyed the 14th, 16th, 17th and 18th for 41 home.
Royal Dornoch's Alison Bartlett had a similar sad story from the back nine. She was two under par for the first six holes but eight over the card for the last 12, finishing with a 79 (36-43) for a share of 34th place.
Fiona De Vries (St Rule) had an 80 to be joint 39th; Margaret Sievwright (Buckpool) an 82 for T52 position; Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie) an 83 (T65) and Dawn Yog (North Berwick) an 87 for joint 85th place in a field of 94 players.
The start of play is this 54-hole tournament was delayed until 8.30am because of fog coming in off the Irish Sea but once it cleared it was a "roaster" of a day.

Hutcheon wins Carnegie Invitational for third

time - by three shots at Skibo Castle

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Greig Hutcheon  (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre Inchmarlo) scored his third win in the £59,000 Carnegie Invitational at the Skibo Castle course today, a five-under-par total of 137 winning him the £6,000 first prize by three strokes.
Alastair Forsyth (Mearns Castle), Graham Fox (Clydeway Golf) and Stephen Gray (Lanark) tied for second place on 140 and earned £4,000 each.
Hutcheon's previous wins in the lucrative tournament were achieved in 2007 and 2010.
Greig's final round started inauspiciously with bogeys at the first two holes but he snapped into title-winning gear with birdies at the long third, short fourth, long fifth and seventh to turn in 33 (two under par).
More birdies followed, at the short 13th, long 15th and 17th, and bogeys at the 16th and long 18th only reduced his winning margin.
Fox (72-68) had six birdies, including the 17th and 18th, in halves of 34 while Forsyth (67-73) ran up a double bogey 7 at the closing hole for 38 home.
Gray, the 2014 winner, had rounds of 71 and 69.

Anybody seen Nick Robson's missing putter? Reward
if you can help find it

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Aberdeen businessman Nick Robson has had a great season as an over-50 golfer. He made his international debut in the Scotland team that won the European senior amateur team title in Slovernia, finished third in the Scottish Senior Golf Society Order of Merit, was leading amateur in the Aberdeen Masters at Meldrum House ... and lots more besides!
Despite all that Nick is not a happy man.

"I have had a putter gone missing. It's a unique one, a Scotty Cameron which is easily recognisable by the custom paint infill on the back and on the neck , unlike any other putter," says Meldrum House Golf Club member Nick, pictured below.

"It has a value of about £400 but that's irrelevant. It is one of the most important clubs in my bag
"I have a picture of this putter and wondered if it would be possible to display it on www.scottishgolfview.com and offer a reward for information leading to the recovery of the putter."

John Duff chalks up another N E Alliance

win with a 68 at Kemnay

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
John Duff left his EuroPro Tour form well behind him as he returned to his happy hunting ground - the North-east Golfers' Alliance, where he is a prolific winner.

At Kemnay today, Duff, pictured at a previous winning venue,  a professional attached to the club of which he was an amateur member, Newmachar Golf Club,  headed a field of 94 with a three-under-par 68 to win the top pro prize of £150 by two shots from Sean Lawrie (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre), nephew of Paul Lawrie, who earned the £120 runner-up prize.
David Law (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) and Ross Cameron (Saltire Energy) tied for third place with pars 71s, earning £80 each.
Duff was three over par with bogeys at the third, fifth and seventh - and then covered his last 11 holes in six under par with birdies at the eighth and ninth, an eagle 3 at the 11th and further birdies at the 15th and 18th for contrasting halves of 37 and 31.
"I really took advantage of the par 5s - having three good eagle chances, and then I finished the round by almost holing my tee shot at the last which set up a nice 2 at the 18th!" said John.
Sean Lawrie had an eagle 3 at the eighth and birdies at the first and 15th in halves of 35. Bogeys at the second, sixth and 17th prevented him from challenging Duff for first place.
