NEWS RELEASE FROM NICK TEALE
Jonathan Thomson leads the HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour’s Glenfarclas Open by two strokes after carding a seven-under-par 63 for his first round at Mar Hall, just four weeks into life as a professional golfer.
The
towering 6 ft 9in Yorkshireman is trailed by Billy Spooner (Woodhall
Spa Golf Club) in second, with five golfers sharing third having shot 66
in the opening round on the par-70 Earl Of Mar Course at Bishopton, near Glasgow.
With
just two events left to conclude before the top 60 on the Race To
Desert Springs Order of Merit are invite to the Matchroom Sport Tour
Championship in Spain, the pressure is on for those yet to make a major
impact this season. Thomson
is among that group of players, having only played two events and
missing both cuts since leaving the amateur ranks last month.
The 20-year-old was in the last group of the day to tee off the 10th and made his first birdies at the 13th and 14th. That momentum helped him to an eagle at the 15th. After the turn he broke
par at the 1st and 3rd before dropping a shot at the 4th. Back-to-back birdies immediately followed before three pars saw out the round.
“I set off pretty slowly; I hit it close on the 10th and the 11th but missed them both,” said Thomson. “I did the same on the next but then on the 13th the ball started rolling and I went birdie, birdie
before chipping in for eagle.
“I turned pro only four weeks ago but I am enjoying the pro life. The
amateur season had pretty much finished for me after the European
Amateur Championship. I was going to turn pro at the end of the year for
European Tour School but managed
to get a few invites so I decided to turn pro now.
“This week for me is all about getting
to Desert Springs, I need a really high finish to get there and then
anything can happen once you get there. For me, this week was about
focussing on trying to get there.”
The
Glenfarclas Open continues with the second round on Thursday, after
which a cut will be made to the top 50 professionals and ties. Live
scoring can be found at
www.europrotour.com and spectator entry is free of charge throughout.
Highlights from Mar Hall will be broadcast on Sky Sports on Tuesday, September 20.

Dubai Creek Open won by Scottish boys' stroke-play champion
Scottish boys champion Thomas (16) wins
Dubai Creek Open after play-off
Rayhan Thomas with the Dubai Creek Open and officials at the presentation ceremony.
REPORT BY VIREN VARMA
DUBAI — Scottish boys' open stroke-play champion Rayhan
Thomas from India created a piece of golfing history today when the Dubai-based teeanger became the first amateur to win a MENA Tour event
when he claimed the Dubai Creek Open after a play-off.
Starting the day tied for the lead with
England pro Jake Shepherd on 10-under, Thomas closed with a 69 to reach 12-under
201 for the tournament, forcing a play-off with England’s Luke Joy, who returned a
brilliant five-under 66 for 201 aggregate.
Thomas bogeyed the first extra hole, the
18th, but that was good enough to win as Joy had a double bogey after hitting his approach
from a bunker into the water
“I am really delighted with my efforts.
Winning the Tour's 50th event and on my home course too made it
special,” said Thomas after receiving the winner’s trophy from Adel Zarouni,
vice chairman of the Emirates Golf Federation.
Mohamed Juma Buamaim, chairman of the MENA
Golf Tour, Chris May, CEO of Dubai Golf, and Patrick Morrow, the club captain,
were also present at the presentation ceremony.
Thomas, who finished runner-up to Shepherd
last year, insisted taking a relaxed attitude into the final round worked
wonders. “I was pretty calm out there and focused on one shot at a time.
“The only anxious moment I had was at the
18th when my approach shot the rocks, nearly ending up in the water, but I
managed to save par to get into the play-off,” he said.
“Overall, I played steady golf and holed some
nice putts, including one for birdie on the 15th from about 12 feet. It feels
nice to get the job the done this time around,” said the 16-year-old prodigy,
who hails from the southern Indian state of Kerala.
England’s Joy, placed third overnight at
seven-under, staged a compelling fightback, but a wayward drive on the first
extra hole that landed in a bunker cost him the title.
“The lie was pretty bad. I had just five per
cent chance of getting over the water. I couldn’t,” said Joy, who won the Dubai
Creek Open in 2014.
Playing in his very first Middle East North Africa Tour
event, Australia’s Ben Eccles made his presence felt by equalling the course record of eight-under-par 63.
Clarke Lutton from Aberdeen and Dunbar's Daniel Kay, the only Scots to make it through to the final round, finished tied 10th and 19th respectively. Lutton shot 71-71-67 for 209 and Kay scored 67, 75 and 73 for 215.DUBAI CREEK OPEN

Kevin Duncan wins NE Alliance opener
with a pro course record 65 at Craibstone
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Kevin Duncan bounced back from a double bogey 6 at Craibstone's first hole to post a four-under-par 65, the lowest score of the first North-east Golfers' Alliance competition of the season.
The professional (pictured) from the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre stable, shot an eagle 3 (at the 574yd fourth), and birdies at the short second, par-5 fifth, short seventh, and the par-4 15th and 17th in halves of 32 (three under par) and 33 (one under). He had a bogey at the 13th.
Duncan earned £130 for heading a field of 85 players by two shots from +3 amateur Adam Dunton (McDonald Ellon), and Peterhead-based pro Ross Cameron (Saltire Energy).
Dunton birdied the fourth, 10th, 16th and 17th in halves of 34-33 while Cameron had six birdies (first, fifth, ninth, 10th, 12th and 15th) in similar halves but including four bogeys.
Sam Kiloh (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) finished fourth on 68, finishing with birdies at the 14th, 16th and 17th after a bogey at the 11th was followed by a double bogey at the 13th.
A triple bogey 7 at the 11th cost Kamran Zeynalov (Portlethen) second place and offset his five birdies. He finished with a par 69, the same mark as Michele Thomson (Meldrum House) who had a double bogey 6 at the 15th.
A new award of a £50 voucher for the leading amateur was won by Ian Esslemont (Cruden Bay) with a 70. Technically, Adam Dunton was the leading amateur with a 67 and Bryan Ritchie (Inverallochy) had a 69 but they earned higher vouchers in the scratch prizelist.
Curiously, nobody returned a 72 or a 73!
The condition of the Craibstone course was commented on favourably by many of the competitors although some thought the greens was just a little bit too fast! Shades of the Masters!
