 Haggs Castle GC's three champions

The three Haggs Castle GC championship winners (left to right): Jennifer Rankine, Craig Morrison and Ronan Johnston.

REPORT BY NEALE STEWART
Haggs Castle GC held their Finals Day today in dry weather.

The Junior Championship Final pitted the Junior Captain, 17 year old Ronan Johnston, against 13 year old Andrew Forbes.
In the morning round Andrew played solid par golf for the first seven holes and was four up.  Ronan finally managed to get his game into gear at the eighth and had got back to square at the 12th.
Ronan was two up on the 18th tee but Andrew reduced the deficit with a solid par at the 18th.  Ronan set out in the afternoon with some quality iron play and was 2 inches from a hole in one at the 20th.  Ronan began to exert more pressure on Andrew and finally won by 5 and 4.

In the Ladies Final, a repeat of the 2015 final, young Jennifer Rankine was defending her title against 2014 Champion and current Carradale GC Ladies Champion, Laura McGeachy.  The game was very tight and all square after 9 holes with both players having made the turn in 38 shots.
Jennifer won the 10th after a concession by Laura.  The play was even over the next few holes and Jennifer was two up after a straightforward par at the 15th.  Jennifer had a birdie 3 at the 16th to retain the Championship by 3 and 2.

The Men's Final was contested by defending champion Craig Morrison and the 2011 champion, Stuart Roberts.  Craig came in to the final in excellent form, having won the Edzell GC Championship, after 34 years of trying, and also this years Glasgow Golf Union match-play championship.
This final was full of quality golf with Craig making the turn in 32 shots and being round in approximately 66.  The better-ball for the first 18 holes was 63 with Craig being fourup.  Craig continued his good scoring in the second round and again made the turn in 32 and with Stuart just not making the putts when it mattered Craig ran out the winner by 9 and 7.

It's that man McIntosh again! Euan (47) wins
SE District Championship by eight strokes
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Euan McIntosh, the 47-year-old former Scottish assistant professional champion, continues to make the headlines in his comeback year as an amateur.
Today the Turnhouse Golf Club member shot a final round of 64 for a 16-under-par total of 264 to win the South East District Championship at Royal Musselburgh by an astonishing margin of eight strokes.
His earlier rounds were 70, 63 and 67
McIntosh's performances since he took up the game again last August after putting away his clubs for the best part of 10 years, during which he was in Germany, have already earned him a place in the Scotland amateur team.
Runner-up was Matthew Clark (Kilmacolm) with scores of 71, 64, 68 and 69. Chris Low (Tantallon) shot a 66 in the final round to earn fourth place, one ahead of this year's Scottish boys' champion, Eric McIntosh (Bruntsfield Links).

Euan McIntosh wins Order of Merit after

super comeback season at age of 47
FROM SCOTTISH GOLF
Turnhouse’s Euan McIntosh put the seal on his superb comeback year with victory in the final Men’s Order of Merit event of the season, extending his winning margin in the overall standings.
The 47-year-old has turned back the clock in some style in 2016, winning the domestic Men’s circuit and earning a first Scotland Home Internationals cap at Nairn earlier this month after a 27-year absence.
McIntosh continued his form over the weekend to storm to an eight-stroke victory in the South East District Open at Royal Musselburgh.
McIntosh, a former professional who only returned to Scotland in April after 20 years away, fired rounds of 63 and 64 in his 72-hole total of 264, well clear of Matthew Clark (Kilmacolm) on 272.
Chris Low from Tantallon secured third place on 274, with the Scottish Boys champion, Bruntsfield Links’ Eric McIntosh, a stroke further back in fourth spot.

Willow Classic at Hanbury Manor

Gary Marks scores first Senior Tour win on

home turf .. but it wasn't easy!
FROM THE EUROPEAN SENIOR TOUR WEBSITE
Londoner Gary Marks secured his first European Senior Tour title in just his 17th event as he won the inaugural Willow Senior Golf Classic by two shots today.
Sidmouth-born Marks started the final round with a commanding five-shot lead, but was pushed to the end by playing partner James Kingston at Hanbury Manor Marriott Hotel and Country Club.
Winner of this year’s Senior Tour Qualifying School, the 52 year old’s best result in 2016 had been a tied 18th finish at the SSE Enterprise Wales Senior Open before taking this victory in Hertfordshire with rounds of 67-63-72.
“It’s the greatest day of my golfing life,” said Marks. “The strength of the field here was great, and you might have a friendly game with one of them and beat them, but I beat them all and I’ve won a major event, it’s one of the biggest events on the Senior Tour.

“This season, I’ve been up the leaderboard and then falling on a number of occasions. The Senior Open at Carnoustie was important. I put in two 70s and finished level par. Because of the scale of that event, it gave me a little extra strength.”
Marks needed to draw on that strength on the back nine as a double bogey on the par four 13th hole saw his lead reduced to four shots with five holes to play.
It was difficult to cope with mentally,” he said. “I had a seven- shot lead with the back nine to play, it suddenly got quite difficult. I had a penalty stroke and started to lose my swing a bit, it was quite tough getting over the finishing line.
“I had a four or five shot lead, but then I had another bogey after that and in your mind you start seeing things unravel, you start seeing ridiculous things. In the end, I hit enough decent shots to cross the line.”

Australian Mike Harwood went two better than his result at the Prostate Cancer UK Scottish Senior Open, as he backed up his fourth-place finish at Archerfield with a second place at Hanbury Manor, finishing 12 under par after a final round of 68.
Kingston, who made his Senior Tour debut earlier this year after turning 50 last November, recorded his best finish on the over-50s circuit, tied third on 11 under par.
He was joined by Ross Drummond, Mike Harwood, Phil Golding and Tim Thelen, while Peter O’Malley, Cesar Monasterio and Paul Wesselingh shared seventh place on ten under par.
Spaniards Miguel Angel Martin and José Rivero each carded hole-in-ones during their rounds. Martin aced the 185 yard par three fourth hole, and Rivero’s came on the 179 yard par three 11th hole.

Thomas Detry makes Challenge Tour history

with 12-stroke win at English venue

FROM THE CHALLENGE TOUR WEBSITE
Thomas Detry made European Challenge Tour history to claim his first professional win as he romped to a stunning 12 shot victory at the Bridgestone Challenge in southern England.
The Belgian carried on his remarkable scoring at Heythrop Park Resort, picking up 11 birdies during his final round on his way to signing for a nine under par round of 63 to reach 29 under par overall – matching the joint lowest under par score in Challenge Tour history, set by Ivó Giner in 2003.
The 23 year old Detry, who broke the course record during his first round with a sublime 12 under par round of 60, also broke the record for the largest winning margin on the Challenge Tour, which was previously set at 10 shots by European Tour winner Brooks Koepka in 2013.
Detry, a former World Amateur Number Eight, was ecstatic with his record-breaking victory, and is looking forward to trying to climb higher up the rankings on the 2016 Road to Oman.
“I am lost for words,” he said. “It has been such a long day; yesterday was as well. We’ve had rain, we’ve had delays, we’ve had everything and to win like that was pretty awesome.
“I was able to stay in the zone and play some pretty good golf and it was a lot of fun. I feel so blessed and I am so happy right now.
“I talked to my caddie earlier today and I said ‘this is what I play golf for’. This is what drives me to play golf. There is no point in being nervous and being under pressure, just go out there and enjoy yourself.
“I started off the day with a birdie, that was great, then I had a very stupid double on hole number three but I didn’t let that affect me. I carried on with four birdies in a row and from there on I just let it roll.
“I think this win will mean I move up in the Rankings but I still need to go out there and put some numbers on the board. I am taking a week off next week – a much needed week off I think – but I am really looking forward to playing in the last five or six events.”
Detry’s victory was made all the sweeter by the news that his close friend, and fellow University of Illinois graduate, Thomas Pieters had won his third European Tour title in Denmark.
“It is amazing,” he said. “Last night we were texting each other saying ‘let’s do this, let’s win this for us, for our coach back home and our coach back in the United States’. It is awesome and we get along very well and it is really cool that we have both won today.

Kerr Investments' 36-hole OOM pro-am at Dumfries and Galloway

Tie between Graham Fox and Jason McCreadie
with Greig Hutcheon third
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
A birdie shoot-out to the £14,530 Kerr Investments 36-hole Order of Merit pro-am at Dumfries and Galloway ended in a tie between Graham Fox (Clydeway Golf) and Jason McCreadie (Largs) on 12-under-par 128.
Both men shot closing rounds of seven-under-par 63.
So too did third placed Greig Hutcheon (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre Inchmarlo) who finished only one behind the joint winners of 129.
Overnight leader Paul O'Hara (North Lanarkshire Leisure), winner of the Scottish young professionals title earlier in the week, found that his final round of three-under 67 for 131 was not low enough to hold the birdie-hunters at bay.
Fox and McCreadie earned £1961 each. Hutcheon £1,261 and fourth-placed O'Hara £871.
Fox posted the clubhouse target of 128 with a bogey-free round of seven birdies, the bulk of them - the 10th, 11th, 14th, 17th and 18th - after the turn for an inward half of 29.
McCreadie came late on the scene with his 63 to catch Fox. The Largs man had eighth birdies in halves of 32-32. But the bogey at the 15th cost him outright victory.
Hutcheon had bogey-free halves of 33-30.
O'Hara had a bag of seven birdies but had a costly run of dropped shots with a bogey at the short eighth, a double bogey 6 at the 10th and another bogey at the 11th.
Cameron Marr (Musselburgh) led the Kerr Investments 2 team of Andy Milner (handicap 18), Rich Milner (13) and Barry Millard (18) to victory by five shots with a 36-hole total of 44-under-par 236.

Paul Lawrie (T15) leads Scots at Himmerland Spa Resort

Pieters' birdie-birdie-birdie finish dumps Dredge in Denmark

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Belgium's Thomas Pieters produced a brilliant finish to win his third European Tour title at the Made in Denmark Tournament and send a message to Ryder Cup Captain Darren Clarke.
Pieters arrived at Himmerland Golf and Spa Resort as the form man on Tour with top five finishes in his last two events but knowing that automatic qualification for the European team to go to Hazeltine in September was out of his reach.
He played the first two rounds with Clarke and opened with a course record-equalling 62 before giving a masterclass in scrambling to a level par 71 on Friday.
Today Pieters showed incredible coolness under pressure, shrugging off the distraction of a 4hr 15min bad weather suspension of play  to almost make a hole-in-one on the 16th and put his approaches on the 17th and 18th to close range for three closing birdies and a 17 under par total.
That gave him a 65 and a one-shot win over Bradley Dredge, and will also give Clarke some food for thought ahead of making his three captain's picks on Tuesday.

"I really needed a good finish," said Pieters. "I saw I was one back walking to the green on 16 and I hit a great shot there but I knew I needed to make at least one more. To finish with two more birdies was pretty cool.
"It's all about winning tournaments. I'm really happy with this one. That was one of my goals, to just have one every year, just so you know you're improving and you can win. That's very important. I'm very, very happy.
"He (Clarke) has got plenty of good players to pick from, so if he doesn't pick me, then so be it and I'll work my butt off to get there in the next one. But I've done all I can now and I'm just really pleased with this win to be honest."
For Dredge, it was a second runner-up finish at this event after he lost out to Marc Warren in 2014, and he finished a shot ahead of Adrian Otaegui and David Lipsky.
Swede Joakim Lagergren was then at 13 under after a closing triple-bogey, two shots ahead of another Ryder Cup hopeful in German Martin Kaymer and South African Jaco Van Zyl.
Belgian Pieters made birdies at the fourth, sixth and eighth to open up a one-shot advantage over Dredge and Spaniard Otaegui, when the stormy conditions that had prompted organisers to bring the tee times forward arrived.
A lengthy delay followed and Pieters bogeyed the ninth upon the resumption, with Otaegui producing a chip-in on the eighth to take the lead.
Otaegui fell back with two bogeys in three holes while Pieters birdied the 11th, but Dredge and American Lipsky both made back-to-back birdies on the tenth and 11th as the Welshman took a one-shot lead.

Lipsky birdied the 14th to join Dredge, and when Lagergen made a third gain in a row on the 16th as Pieters narrowly missed out on an ace, there was a four-way tie at the top.
Otaegui had birdied the 14th, 16th and 17th to get back into contention but when Pieters and Lagergren both birdied the 17th, they stood on the final tee tied for the lead at 16 under.
Lagergen lost his ball off the tee to record a triple-bogey as Pieters made it three in a row, and Dredge then holed a monster putt on the last to make second his own.
Local favourite Søren Kjeldsen delighted the home crowd with a closing 66 to get to ten under alongside Portugal's Ricardo Gouveia, a shot ahead of Paul Dunne, Mikael Lundberg and Richard Sterne.

Pieters leads before rain and lightning halt

 play in Denmark

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Thomas Pieters opened up a one-shot lead midway through the final round of the Made in Denmark tournament before play was suspended due to torrential rain and the threat of lightning at Himmerland Golf abd Spa Resort.
Pieters arrived in Farsø in some glorious form, having finished fourth at the Olympic men's golf competition and second at last week's D+D REAL Czech Masters.
He will have to wait until Tuesday to discover whether his form will bring him a Captain's pick from Ryder Cup Captain Darren Clarke, but three birdies in his first eight holes put him in the driving seat to claim a third European Tour title.
Sunday's tee times had been brought forward due to expected bad weather in northern Denmark and, after rain overnight and in the morning, play was suspended at 1115.
At that point, Pieters was 14 under, one shot clear of Bradley Dredge and Adrian Otaegui and two ahead of Joakim Lagergren and David Lipsky.
Dredge had come into the final round with a one-shot lead and was looking for a change of fortune having won two European Tour events after leading into the final round 13 times.
Otaegui had a chance to hit the summit on the first, seeing a two-footer horseshoe out, but it was all change on the par three second as Dredge got in trouble off the tee. The Welshman pulled his drive left, resulting in a lost ball, a trip back to the tee and a double-bogey.

That left Lipsky, Otaegui and Pieters at the top as they all started with three pars, with Ricardo Gouveia joining them on 11 under as he followed a birdie on the third with a chip-in eagle on the fourth.
Pieters then produced a lovely chip on the fourth to nudge himself in front with Lagergren also making a birdie to get to 11 under.
Dredge and Otaegui both also took advantage of the par five and the sixth then bore fruit for the leading challengers.
Pieters and Otaegui both added another birdie but Dredge put his second shot to five feet for an eagle and joined the Belgian and the Spaniard at the top of the leaderboard on 13 under.
Swede Lagergen and American Lipsky produced excellent tee-shots on the seventh to get to within one of the lead but they were soon two back when Pieters rolled in a 20-footer on the eighth.
The rain had started to fall heavily by that point and, with the final group on the seventh green, play was suspended.
Portuguese Gouveia remained at 11 under, a shot ahead of Germany's Martin Kaymer and two clear of South African Thomas Aiken.
Local favourite Søren Kjeldsen, Scot Paul Lawrie and Ireland's Paul Dunne were then at eight under.
