Danny Willett and Lee Westerwood to be England's pair in Melbourne

Russell Knox picks Duncan Stewart to be

his Scotland partner in World Cup

Danny Willett has selected Lee Westwood to represent England alongside him at this year's World Cup of Golf in Melbourne.
As the highest-ranked English player to commit to the two-man team event from November 23-27, the Masters champion had the right to choose his partner and picked the man who finished second behind him at Augusta in April.
Willett, who finished 37th in the Olympic golf tournament in Rio on Sunday, said: "It's always great to represent your country. You don't get the chance to do it too often so I'm excited about playing the World Cup.

"I was at Royal Melbourne in 2013 and although I didn't play as well as I would've liked, it was a cracking course and I've heard Kingston Heath is just as good.
"It's a different format this time so I'm really looking forward to playing with Westy. He's played in nine Ryder Cups and has unbelievable experience of foursomes and fourballs, so I couldn't have picked a better partner."
Westwood, 43, has never played in the World Cup but says team golf brings out the best in him.
"Over the past couple of years Danny has shown what he's capable of and I've got no doubt he's going to prove a great partner, so I'm looking forward to pairing up with him," he said.
"I've always enjoyed team golf. It's an exciting format and it adds to the occasion when you're playing for your country, so hopefully we can bring the trophy home with us."
Defending champions Australia will once again be represented by Adam Scott and world No 1 Jason Day, who won the individual title and combined with Scott to claim team victory.
The 2016 tournament reverts back to a 72-hole team event, with teams playing in foursomes on the first and third days of competition and in four-balls on the second and fourth.
Scotland will be represented by Russell Knox and his former Jacksonville University team-mate Duncan Stewart from Grantown-on-Spey, the world number 392 who won his first tournament on the Challenge Tour earlier this year.

Knox, who is hoping to secure a Ryder Cup wild card after winning the Travelers Championship earlier this month, said: "I've never been to Australia so it was super, exciting to get the chance to go there.
"I've heard the golf course is one of the best in the world so it will be fun. To represent Scotland is obviously a dream come true."
Duncan Stewart told Scottishgolfview.com:
"I am extremely excited and honoured to get the opportunity to represent Scotland at the World Cup in November. It is going to be great to team up with Russell and we will be doing everything possible to make Scotland world champions for a second time."

World No 1 amateur in Stanford University team for tour of Scottish links

Stanford’s Maverick McNealy
Stanford University’s Maverick McNealy (Tracy Wilcox)

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Michigan – Stanford senior Maverick McNealy can’t wait for the upcoming US college season. The Cardinal lost just one player to graduation – Welshman David Boote – and return a core that includes McNealy, junior Franklin Huang and sophomore Brandon Wu. Plus, they will add freshmen David Snyder and Henry Shimp.
“I’m very excited about our team this year,” said McNealy, the world’s top-ranked amateur and the Haskins Award winner from two seasons ago.
While McNealy is enthusiastic for the season to begin, he might not want to report back to school next month.
Why, you ask? Well, let’s just say McNealy and his team will soon be embarking on the trip of a lifetime: a nearly two-week-long trip to Scotland that will include golf on 10 esteemed courses.
The line-up:
  • Crail Golf Club
  • St. Andrews’ New Course
  • Kingsbarns Golf Links
  • Carnoustie Golf Links
  • Cruden Bay Golf Club
  • Nairn Golf Club
  • Castle Stuart Golf Links
  • Royal Dornoch Golf Club
  • Trump International
  • Royal Aberdeen Golf Club
“Something I’ve been looking forward to since I signed up four years ago,” said McNealy, who will be joined by his whole team, including the freshmen, and Stanford coaches.
Said Huang, who is joining McNealy and Shimp at the U.S. Amateur this week: “That’s just a cherry on top of going to Stanford.”

A short note on Justin Rose winning the Olympic title. I did courtesy driving at the first Scottish Open at Castle Stuart some years back. As you will remember the weather had a big say that week, and the courtesy drivers had some long shifts, up to 14 hours a day.
At the end of the tournament, late Sunday afternoon, Justin spoke publicly in the players area to thank all the drivers for their great work in difficult circumstances.
Never forgot it, and good guys win.
All the best,
Baker

United States Amateur Championship first qualifying round

Robert MacIntyre (68) leads Scots at Oakland

Hills,  Syme 70, Ferguson 72, Forrest 73

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Michigan – Eighteen holes are in the books at the 116th U.S. Amateur, and that means just 18 holes remain before the field of 312 players is whittled to just 64.
Leading that field after Day 1 is Lipscomb’s Dawson Armstrong, who shot 6-under 64 on the North Course at Oakland Hills. The round was a personal best for the Brentwood, Tennessee native in competition.
“It feels really good to finally reach that hump. … It’s a big bonus (to do it at the U.S. Amateur),” said Armstrong, who just missed the match-play cut at the 2014 U.S. Amateur.
“You know, I was hoping the game would be on. This is kind of a tournament I’ve been looking forward to all year. It’s just been constantly people telling me, hey, look, you’re preparing yourself for the U.S. Amateur up in Oakland Hills, and it’s a great opportunity to show how the hard work is going to pay off.”

Behind Armstrong, many notable names are in ideal position to make match play, including Florida sophomore Sam Horsfield, the world’s second-ranked amateur, and Vanderbilt senior Matthias Schwab, ranked fourth in the world.
Horsfield, who has Ian Poulter’s caddie Terry Mundy on the bag this week, shot 4-under 66 Monday on the North Course at Oakland Hills Country Club, while Schwab played the tougher South Course to the tune of 1-under 69.
“I think I missed eight putts inside of 12 feet,” Horsfield said. “I think I hit 17 greens in regulation … I had three eagle putts. From there, it’s kind of hard not to play well.”
Of course, there are some big names that need to turn things around on Tuesday.
Last year’s U.S. Amateur runner-up Derek Bard of Virginia shot 7-over 77 on the South Course.
TCU’s Chelso Barrett, playing in his 13th USGA event, also carded 77 on the South.
This year’s Latin America Amateur champion Paul Chaplet opened with 76 on the South.
Min Woo Lee, this year’s U.S. Junior Amateur winner, played the South, as well, and shot 73, as did last year’s U.S. Junior champ, Philip Barbaree.
Most notably, top-ranked amateur Maverick McNealy of Stanford finished his first round on the South in 73, carding three birdies, four bogeys and a double. McNealy, who missed some time this summer recovering from adrenal fatigue, has his father Scott McNealy, a Michigan native, on the bag this week.
SCOTSWATCH: Robert MacIntyre, the left hander from Oban and last year's Scottish amateur champion, is the best place of the four Scots in the field who are trying to follow in the footsteps or Aberdonian Richie Ramsay who won this championship before he turned pro.
MacIntyre goes into the second qualifying round in tied 14th place after a two-under-par 68.
Connor Syme is T50 after a 70.
Ewen Feguson and Grant Forrest need to improve some to make the leading 64 who will qualify for the match-play. Ferguson is T118 after a 72 and Forrest is T156 following a three-over 73
