U.S. Senior Open suspended until Monday

due to course conditions

The final round of the U.S. Senior Open was postponed until Monday.
The final round of the U.S. Senior Open has been suspended until Monday, the USGA announced Sunday.
The U.S. Senior Open was delayed for much of the day due to intense rainfall at Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio. Originally the USGA said play would resume at 3:30 p.m. EDT. However, about an hour before play was set to resume, the association announced that no golf would be played after reviewing the course conditions.
Miguel Angel Jimenez leads the Senior Open at 3 under, one shot ahead of Gene Sauers.
The USGA has not announced what time play will resume Monday, or whether players will go off on two tees.

Justin Rose wins duel with Henrik Stenson to claim Olympic golf medal

Justin Rose won gold for Great Britain as he overcame Henrik Stenson on a dramatic final day of the Olympic Men's Golf Competition in Rio de Janeiro.
Golf had not featured in the Olympic Games for 112 years and the Ryder Cup team-mates made its return well worth the wait as they produced an enthralling final day in Brazil.
The Englishman came into day four with a one-shot lead over the Swede but the pair were level at 15 under as they stood on the 18th tee after a day of nip and tuck on the Olympic Golf Course.
Both men found themselves just short of the green on the par five last after two shots and - while Stenson put his approach to 23 feet and three-putted for a bogey - Rose got to two feet and holed his birdie putt to sign for a 67 and beat Stenson by two shots.
American Matt Kuchar fired a brilliant closing 63 to finish at 13 under and take the bronze.
This was the second time in as many months Stenson had faced a final day shoot out to claim one of golf's biggest prizes after he produced a stunning closing 63 to beat Phil Mickelson at The Open Championship and win his first Major.
Rounds of 66-68-68-68 got him within touching distance of adding Olympic gold to his Claret Jug but he takes home a silver to add to his Open, Race to Dubai and FedEx Cup titles.

Rose is also a Major champion after his US Open success at Merion in 2013, and his gold medal will also sit next to a Harry Vardon Trophy after two of the European Tour's elite performers put on a show on the biggest stage in the world.

The pair will now begin to turn their attentions to Hazeltine and a successful defence of the Ryder Cup they helped to win by claiming three points from three as a pair at Gleneagles two years ago.
"I just said today that I had to out Stenson Stenson," said Rose. "I knew I wasn't going to get much from him at all. Obviously the bogey at the last only came because he had to force the putt in.
"But he is unbelievable. He's relentless and a great player, and I can't wait to be on the same team as him in the Ryder Cup. He's a great player and he's a great friend and I just gave him a hug on the 18th green, he's as gracious as ever.

"It feels absolutely incredible. The whole week, I've been so focused. I've been so into it. I've been so up for it.

The leading duo both took advantage of the par five first for opening birdies and Stenson - who made a 108-foot putt on day two - rolled in a 40-footer on the second to take a share of the lead.
That did not last long, however, as Rose put his approach on the next to six feet to make a second birdie of the day.

Both Stenson and Rose took advantage of the par five fifth but when the Englishman put his second on the seventh over the green and dropped a shot, the lead was shared again.

The 36 year old then responded in brilliant fashion, putting his tee-shot on the eighth to six feet and getting himself back to 15 under.

The pair were going blow-for-blow and Stenson got back in a share with a birdie on the par five tenth before Rose failed to get up and down from a greenside bunker on the 13th. Stenson had the lead with five to play.

Kuchar had made birdies on the fifth, sixth, eighth and ninth to put himself in contention for bronze and when he put his second shot to 14 feet on the tenth to set up an eagle, he was favourite for third place. Another birdie was to come on the 15th and after putting his approach to three feet on the penultimate hole, he was 13 under.

Stenson missed the green on the par three 14th to surrender a first bogey of the day and, after Rose made a brilliant up-and-down from the sand to save par, Kuchar was just one off the lead.
A par on the last saw the 38 year old set the clubhouse target but Rose put his approach on the 15th to six feet to once again get his nose in front before Stenson went even closer on the next and things were level again heading to the last.

Belgian Thomas Pieters was fourth at nine under after a closing 65, a shot clear of Spain's Rafa Cabrera Bello, Australian Marcus Fraser and Thailand's Kiradech Aphibarnrat.

Spaniard Sergio Garcia, Argentina's Emiliano Grillo and American Bubba Watson finished at seven under to complete the top ten

German Falko wins British boys'

title at 37th hole at Muirfield

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE R and A
Falko Hanisch came out on top after a closely-fought 36-hole final of the 90th British boys' amateur championship at Muirfield today.
The 16-year-old German defeated Spain’s Alejandro Aguilera on the 37th hole to seal the biggest win of his young career. He has earned a place in The 122nd Amateur Championship at Royal St George’s and Prince’s next year and an exemption into Final Qualifying for The 146th Open at Royal Birkdale.
In fair conditions on Scotland’s East Coast, it was the Spaniard who stormed into a three hole lead on the front nine after Hanisch bogeyed on the 6th and 9th holes, either side of a concession on the 7th.
Nevertheless, Hanisch, who is a member of the Stolper Heide Club in Berlin, won two holes in a row from the 10th to reduce the deficit to one, only to bogey the par 4 12th to give Aguilera a two hole advantage.
A beautiful tee shot by Hanisch on the par 3 13th enabled him to pull one hole back after Aguilera found trouble in the bunker and he returned the match to all-square after winning the 14th hole with a par following a bogey from the Spanish youngster.
However, the 16-year-old from Madrid replied immediately with a successful par putt on the next hole after a double bogey from the German hopeful.
Both players were unable to take advantage of opportunities to win the 17th after missing putts from around 4ft and had to settle for a halve as nerves began to take hold.
The pair finished the opening 18 holes all-square after Aguilera’s wayward approach to the 18th green plugged into the right-hand greenside bunker and was followed by a three-putt that led to the hole being conceded.
The early exchanges in the afternoon were a close run affair with the first four holes being halved but Hanisch, who is currently number one in the German Junior Golf Rankings, took the lead for the first time in the match with an excellent birdie on the par 5 23rd hole.
The slender advantage was short lived, however, as Aguilera made successful putts on the 24th and 25th holes in a two-hole swing to go 1up.
The see-saw nature of the encounter continued two holes later with a birdie by the German on the 27th good enough to win the hole and restore parity to the encounter, before a bogey by Aguilera on the 30th hole gave Hanisch the lead for a second time in the match.
Aguilera was not out of it yet, however, and the match went back to all-square on the 34th hole when the Spaniard holed a vital birdie putt from 20ft after his opponent had hit a spectacular bunker recovery close to the flag.
The last two holes were halved, taking the Final to extra holes.
Aguilera handed the advantage to Hanisch when his approach to the 37th hole went out of bounds while his opponent’s second shot safely found the heart of the green. The young German held his composure to secure the winning par putt from four feet and complete a memorable victory.
Key Quotes:
Falko Hanisch:
“I’m so happy, I can hardly believe it. I enjoyed the match, it was a very tough match and Alejandro played very well. I tried not to think about the occasion too much and just concentrate on enjoying playing golf. My only thought before the match was to be relaxed and enjoy the final.
“Sometimes it’s easier to play in other countries like Scotland because in your own country, everyone expects you to do well. I like the Scottish people, they were very supportive
“After the first nine holes, I was not confident and he was playing well. But I just said to myself ‘try and play better’ and thankfully it came together. Alejandro is a great player, I like his golf swing, he is very quick and his short game is unbelievable.”
Alejandro Aguilera:
“In the last hole, my ball was in a divot and I couldn’t hit it so I lost because of that. If you told me on the first day that I would have reached the final, I wouldn’t have believed you. I’m very happy as I came second in the Boys Amateur.
“Match play is different and I don’t always like to play the same type of golf all the time. I like the change in format.
“I knew I had to make a birdie on the 17th to stay in it and then maybe make a birdie on the 18th to win it but it wasn’t to be.
“I think it’s important at my age to not worry about winning all the time, being second place is good and I can come back next year to try again.”
The 91st British boys' amateur championship will take place at The Nairn and Nairn Dunbar from August 15 to 20 next year.

STEPHEN ROGER OUTCLASSES NORTH

EAST DISTRICT OPEN FIELD

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Cruden Bay's rising star Stephen Roger won the Kings Links Golf Centre North-east District Open by the runaway margin of nine strokes at Portlethen over the weekend.
The 18-year-old, winner this season of the Scottish and North-east youths' titles, forged clear of the field with his "Sunday best," shooting rounds of 73, 70, 68 and 66 for an impressive 11-under-par total of 277.
Adam Dunton (McDonald Ellon) was level with Roger after 54 holes at five-under 211 but took 75 shots in the third round compared with Roger's 66
Stephen feels being a full-time amateur for the past year or so has brought his game on tremendously.
"I've gained a lot of experience from playing in the main open tournaments and it has definitely helped. But he is not going to jump into the professional ranks.
"I want to get as good as I can get as an amateur before I even think about going to Tour School."
Scottish boys' champion Eric McIntosh (Bruntsfield Links) and Dunton  tied for second place on 286.
McIntosh shot 71, 75, 70 and 70. Dunton scored 68, 73, 70 and 75.
The CSS for the par 72 course was 73, 72, 72 and 72.
