The Penny(cott) drops - from 67 to 77, and

Lawrence is new leader at Leven Gold Medal

First-round leader Malcolm Pennycott (Royal Burgess) from Arran went from the sublime (a four-under-par 67) to the almost ridiculous (a six-over 77) to tumble down the halfway leaderboard at the Leven Gold Medal 72-hole Scottish Golf Order of Merit tournament organised by the Leven Golfing Society.
Pennycott had seven bogeys before, to cap it all, finishing his second round with a double bogey 6. Good job he had three birdies or he would not have broken 80 second time round.
Angus Carrick (Douglas Park), who tagged on a 67 to his opening 69, took over the lead  with a six-under-tally of 136 before he was relegated to second place by one of the last men to finish their second rounds - Dan Lawrence (Ballumbie Castle).
Dan shot a brilliant second round of seven-under 64, which included a splendid outward half over 29 with birdies at the first, second, third, seventh and eighth.
His birdie fest continued after the turn with further gains at the 12th, 13th and 14th before he came back to earth with a bogey 4 at the short 15th, the only  blemish on his card which was a six-shot improvement on his morning round.
Highlander Kyle Godsman, based at Hopeman but a member of Moray Golf Club in Lossiemouth, has scored 69 and 68 for third place on 137.
Former Scottish amateur champion Barry Hume (Haggs Castle) usually plays well over the Leven Links but the sparkle was missing today as he shot 70-73 for 143, nine off the pace with 36 holes to play.
Only those with 36-hole totals of 149 and better qualified for Sunday's two rounds.

Alex Noren to take on Anthony Wall in Paul Lawrie Match-play final at Archerfield

Alex Noren will take on Anthony Wall in Sunday's final
FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Alex Noren, pictured above, remains on course to complete a notable Scottish double as he cruised into the final of the Aberdeen Asset Management Paul Lawrie Match Play at Archerfield Links.

Tournament results

The top seed, who lifted his fifth European Tour title at last month's Scottish Open, claimed comfortable victories over Johan Carlsson and James Morrison and now faces Anthony Wall in Sunday's final after the veteran Englishman edged past Oliver Fisher at the fourth extra hole of a tense semi-final.
Noren raced out of the block against Morrison with birdies at the opening three holes and, after the long sixth was halved in birdie 4s,  another birdie from the in-form Swede at the seventh swept him into a four-up lead.
Morrison fought back with birdies at the ninth and 10th to halve the deficit, but he could not match Noren's sixth birdie of the round at the 11th before the Englishman responded again at the next.
Noren restored his three-hole lead with yet another birdie at the short 13th, and the next two were halved in par before both players hit excellent approaches to the 16th and Noren followed Morrison in from three feet to seal victory.
The all-English encounter between Fisher and Wall was a much tighter affair, with the first six holes being halved before Wall rolled in a good putt for a three at the seventh to go one up.
Fisher holed from 20 feet to level at the eighth, but a poor drive at nine led to a double-bogey six and the pair traded birdies at the 11th while the next four were halved in pars.
Wall matched Fisher's birdie at the 16th to stay one up, but he missed the green at the par-three 17th and could not get up and down before Fisher gained the upper hand when he crushed a stunning three-wood to 25 feet at 18.
But Wall wedged to eight feet and rolled in the birdie putt, and Fisher ensured extra holes with a calm six-footer after leaving his first putt woefully short.

Wall left a putt for the win short on the second extra hole, and Fisher did likewise at the next before leaving a birdie putt in the jaws on the 22nd, and Wall's eight-footer just had enough pace to drop to book his place in the final.
In the morning quarter-finals, Noren was always in control of his clash with Carlsson after reeling off three consecutive birdies from the third before a superb eagle at the sixth took him into a commanding four-hole lead.
Carlsson managed to reduce the deficit to three on three occasions, but Noren's birdies at 10 and 13 maintained his healthy lead before he wrapped up a convincing win on the 16th green.
Morrison advanced after being one down at the turn against Alejandro Canizares before playing a storming back nine, rolling in five birdies in seven holes, to romp to a 4 and 2 win over the Spaniard. and
Wall produced a grandstand finish to his tense battle with Haydn Porteous as he chipped in for eagle - his second of the back nine - to win on the final hole, while Fisher overcame a mid-round stutter against Max Kieffer to clinch a 3 and 2 victory.
Live coverage of the final and third-place play-off will start on Sunday at 11am on Sky Sports 4 - your home of golf.

Cameron's top 20 finish in Germany but Kiloh nosedives

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Ross Cameron from Ellon and Portlethen's Sam Kiloh, the only Scots to survive the second round cut in the Gut Bissemoor Classic at Bissenmoor Golf and CountryClub at Bad Bramstedt, Germany finished joint 17th and 32nd respectively.
Cameron had rounds of 71, 72 and 73 for a three-over-par total of 216. He earned 422 euros
Kiloh was also chasing a top 20 place, perhaps even higher, until he nosedived with a final round of seven-over-par 78 after earlier rounds of 72 and 69.
The Portlethen man had an aggregate of six-over 219 and earned 327 euros, much less than he might have expected after two rounds.
Winner of the 5,000 euros first prize was France's Mathieu Fenasse, who scored his first pro victory with rounds of 67, 65 and 69 for 12-under 201 - one shot ahead of Ireland's Rory McNamara (66-66-70). McNamara earned 3,000 euros
Scots Daniel Kay (148), Kevin Duncan (148), Alexander Culverwell (149) and Chris Robb (157) missed the cut which fell at 146.

Malcolm Pennycott sets pace with a 67

at Leven Gold Medal

By Colin Farquharson
Royal Burgess Society member Malcolm Pennycott, originally from Arran, made the early running in the Leven Gold Medal 72-hole Order of Merit tournament at the Fife links today.
He shot a four-under-par 67 with birdies at the second, third, eighth, 11th, 12th and 13th in halves of 32 and 35. He had two bogeys - at the first and 10th.
Snapping at his heels are Alasdair MacDougall (St Andrews New), twice winner of the Tennant Cup, another four-round Order of Merit counter, and Clive MacLean (Balmore) with 68 apiece.
MacDougall had halves of 33-35 while MacLean saddled himself with a double bogey 6 which took the shine off a six-birdie scorecard of 36-33.
Euan McIntosh (Turnhouse) had four birdies in a row after the turn in returning a 69.

Leishman leads but Knox in the mix on crowded leaderboard at Travelers Ch/ship

Russell Knox is just one off a four-way tie for the lead in Connecticut.
Russell Knox is just one off a four-way tie for the lead in Connecticut (TracyWilcox)

CROMWELL, Connecticut. — Having shot his second straight 3-under 67 Friday afternoon at TPC River Highlands, Russell Knox was offered congratulations for being in contention.
The personable Scot from Inverness, he of the breakout year on the US PGA Tour, accepted the good cheer, but said “being in contention includes everyone who makes the cut.”
He wasn’t kidding, either.
For whatever reason you put the finger on — devilish hole locations, greens that firmed up as the day went on, swirling winds, or a cozy golf course that seems to show its colors when the field is bunched — the 36-hole cut at the Travelers Championship has delivered the sort of clarity you get when you drive through Manhattan at 6:30 on a Friday.

If you like wide-open spaces, don’t look at the agate list here at the Travelers, because from the four names tied at 7-under 133 — Tyrone Van Aswegen, Daniel Berger, Russell Henley and Marc Leishman — to the 18 names tied for 56th — a mere six strokes separates the leaders to those who made the cut on the number.
So claustrophobic is it that one of those names tied for 56th at 1-under 139, Louis Oosthuizen, shook his head. “If you play good enough, you feel like you can shoot 5 or 6 under and see where that puts you,” he said.
“Anyone could win this.”
Well, not everyone, because Andrew Loupe missed the cut, an inexplicable exit on an improbable day. One of two players to push as deep as 8 under, Loupe’s fortunes turned when he triple-bogeyed the par-4 14th. He made the turn at 6 under, and played the front in 41 to finish at level-par.
That was one too high as 73 advanced at 1 under or better.
Each and every one thinking he has a chance.
“If it stays firm, you never know,” said Vaughn Taylor, who shot 71 and at 5-under 135 is in a logjam with six others. Then again, everywhere you look there is a logjam, because in addition to the four who share the lead, there are four others — Jerry Kelly, 70; Robert Garrigus, 67; Patrick Rodgers, 66; and Knox — who are tied for fifth at 6 under.
Among the notables to make the cut:
  • Three of four who will fly to the Olympics Sunday night to represent the U.S. — Matt Kuchar at 4 under; Bubba Watson and Patrick Reed at 3 under.
  • Jon Rahm, the impressive Spaniard via Arizona State, backed up a 65 with a 70 and is 5 under.
  • Padraig Harrington and Hunter Mahan both birdied their 18th hole, the par-4 ninth, to make the cut on the number.
  • Ernie Els, who was 4 over at one point in Thursday’s first round, pitched in for eagle at the par-4 ninth and holed a wedge shot from behind the 17th green to shoot 67 and make the cut at 1 under.
  • Bryson DeChambeau was 2 over for the tournament, but birdied four times over his final six holes to shoot 66 and get into the weekend at 2 under.
Of the four co-leaders, Leishman won here in 2012, while Berger and Henley have also won on Tour. Van Aswegen, meanwhile, is not only 114th in the FedEx Cup standings, he sits No. 348 in the Official World Golf Ranking.
With rain forecast to come into the area early in the afternoon, tournament officials pushed tee times up so they’ll go off of two tees in threesomes between 7 and 9 a.m.
Expect the range to be crowded in the early morning, just like the leaderboard.
