Last hole drama as Gough wins the Reid

Trophy by five strokes

ENGLAND GOLF NEWS RELEASE
Conor Gough pulled off an impressive five-shot victory in the Reid Trophy today – despite a little last hole drama at Porters Park Golf Club in Hertfordshire.
The 13-year-old was cruising home in the English U14 boys’ open championship when he caught a flier with his second to the 18th. It cleared the green and finished in an almost inaccessible position beneath tree branches.
Gough, from Stoke Park in Buckinghamshire, opted to replay the shot and this time finished safely to the right of the green. From there he calmly played a neat up and down to complete his – slightly delayed – march to victory.
“I was shocked it went so far,” said Gough who initially took a six-iron for the 190-yard shot. “I hit a good shot but it just came out like a proper flier. But I knew I was five or six shots in the leads so I just told myself to take a double bogey and win.”

He led the championship from start to finish, opening with three-under 67, following up with one-over 71 and signing off today with 74 for a two-over par total.

“I’m really happy to win this, it was important because it’s my last year,” said Gough. “Hopefully I can look forward to winning more competitions in the future.”

The runner-up on seven-over was Nicola Gerhardsen of Switzerland whose closing level par 70 was the best score of the day. Third place on eight-over was shared by Lancelot Salisbury of France, who also made progress with his 71, and England’s Dominic Clemons (Gog Magog) who finished with 74.

England’s Oscar Doran (Delamere Forest) also finished in the top 10, sharing 9th place, while Joseph Wood (West Hill) and Thomas Gregory (Stoke Park) were in a group tied for 12th place.

Gough’s win completes a remarkable couple of weeks in which he has also won the U15 Douglas Johns Trophy and successfully defended the Berks, Bucks & Oxon (BB&O) U14 boys’ county championship. He’s now won that title for three years in a row, first claiming it at the age of 11, when he also had the first of his two U12 championship wins.

He set off today with a three-shot lead and played steadily throughout the round. He was a couple over par on the outward half, but his playing partners - and most of the field – were also dropping shots and as Gough turned for home he was five clear.

He underlined his dominance in the event with birdies on the 10th and 13th, both par fives which he two-putted and which got him to two-under for the championship. He was back to level as he played the 18th, but not even the final hole blip could do much to dent his progress to his first national title.

“It feels good, very good,” said Gough. “When I first got here I liked the course and I knew if I played well I could win it. Then, after my first two rounds, I thought this could be the week. I just kept to my strategy all week and today I didn’t really hit any bad shots, I was just a bit unlucky on the last.”

Plain sailing at Archerfield for top seed Chris

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Top seed Chris Wood eased into the second round of the Aberdeen Asset Management Paul Lawrie Match Play with a 4 and 3 win over Brett Rumford.
The Englishman is looking for a victory this week to cement his place in the European Ryder Cup team and ensure he can begin married life later this month with a week's holiday rather than a battle to get into Darren Clarke's team for Hazeltine.
The BMW PGA Championship winner had spoken coming into the tie of being wary of Rumford's short game over the Archerfield Links but after the Australian made a birdie on the first, it was plain sailing for Wood.

He bounced back with a birdie on the second and won the fourth and seventh with par before recording an eagle on the par five 11th. A birdie on the 14th put him four up and he finished the job with the minimum of fuss.
"I'd like to think I have a good chance this week," said Wood. "You don't have to beat 155 others, you just have to beat six or seven, on paper. I know it's not that easy. I knew today playing Rummy, he's got such a good short game, you never feel like he's out of a hole.

"I managed to get a couple holes up by seven and you sort of feel in control.
"I couldn't buy a putt today but kept giving myself chances. When you're hitting it to ten, 15 feet on every hole, I think it wears your opponent down."

Wood will next face countryman and 32nd seed Daniel Brooks, who overcame Welshman Gareth Wright 4 and 3.
The winner of that match will face 36 holes tomorrow with the round of 32 and round of 16 rescheduled for Friday with high winds expected on Sunday.

Birdies at the first, sixth, eighth, 11th and 16th all brought him holes with Bjerregaard fighting back with a gain of his own on the 14th.
Australian Richard Green had been two down with seven to play but three birdies in the next five holes helped him claim a 3 and 2 win over Lee Slattery and earn a clash with Lawrie.
"I played lovely today," said Lawrie. "I've been struggling a wee bit with a sore neck the last ten days but today I felt fully fit and when I feel like that I feel as though I can make birdies and I can get some speed with the club.
"I've not played with Richard for a long time. He's a similar age to myself, maybe a little younger, so not so much of a young gun tomorrow. But whoever it is, you've got to play decent golf."
Local favourite Marc Warren dumped out fifth seed Jorge Campillo as a run of four birdies in five holes from ninth helped him to a 3 and 2 triumph.
Next up for the Scot will be Swede Magnus A Carlsson, who was seven under for 15 holes in beating Chase Koepka 4 and 3.
Another victorious Scot was eighth seed Richie Ramsay, who overcame a late fightback from last year's semi-finalist David Howell to win by one hole.
Next up for him is Roope Kakko, the Finn made an eagle on the last to beat Grégory Havret after 20 holes.

Oliver Fisher needed 22 holes to overcome American Peter Uihlein and he set up an all-English clash with Simon Khan - a 2 and 1 winner over Pablo Larrazábal.
Mikko Ilonen - the 16th seed  - had fallen behind against Jin Jeong after six holes but two birdies in four around the turn moved him ahead before a Jeong bogey on the 16th handed the Finn a 3 and 2 victory.
German Maximilian Kieffer was six under after 15 holes in beating Edoardo Molinari 3 and 2 and he will be next up for Ilonen.
Richard Bland was a 2 and 1 winner over Joakim Lagergren and will next face fellow Englishman Anthony Wall who beat Robert Dinwiddie 3 and 2.
David Horsey fell behind early as Sébastien Gros made an eagle on the second in their match but the French number 21 seed would make only one further birdie as Horsey won the fifth, seventh, eighth, tenth, 12th, 13th and 14th in a 6 and 4 win.
He will face Haydn Porteous on Friday morning with the South African beating John Parry at the first extra hole.

WEBB MASTER HAS DESIGNS ON TITLE

GALVIN GREEN PGA ASSISTANTS’ CHAMPIONSHIP
PRESS RELEASE

Mathew Webb had tournament officials scrambling for the record books at one point after a birdie and eagle spree during the second round of the Galvin Green PGA Assistants’ Championship at Little Aston.
The Northumberland ace was flying at eight under par through 16 holes as he looked set to carve out an unassailable lead in the £32,000 event.
But after finding water on the 17th with a flier and snap-hooking his drive off the last, the Bedlingtonshire assistant eventually signed for a six under par 66 leaving host pro Brian Rimmer’s record 63 intact.
Webb, however, remains very much in pole position at nine under for the 54 hole tournament with a three shot advantage over Three River’s James Webber and Spalding’s Adam Keogh who also carded a 66 to thrust himself into contention.
“It was a bit of a disappointing finish given how I’d played,” admitted Webb. “I didn’t even see it coming from anywhere as I hadn’t a bad tee shot all day.
“I don’t know if it was a lack of concentration but on the 18th I snap-hooked a driver and didn’t even bother looking for it because it was that far wide but the other was down the middle and I got up and down for a five. It was damage limitation on both of them really.
“I feel a bit hard done by but I played well. I think the last two days I’ve hit the ball the best I ever have.”
While a feature of the opening round on the Harry Vardon-designed gem has been plenty of scoring opportunities, equally there are card-wrecking dangers too and Webb is grateful for the three stroke cushion.
“I think it is really going to be beneficial because there are a few holes where you can play a little more defensive on. I haven’t been overly aggressive the last few days anyway, but there are a few holes where you can say you’ve got a shot in the bag.”
Webb will go out last with Webber who made a lightning start with three birdies in his opening four holes. Like Webb though he came a cropper at 17 but this time entirely self-inflected.
“I hit a terrible shot at 17 which led to trouble,” he explained. “I had a chip out sideways or a risky shot to the green. I took on the risky option which was probably wrong and hit it in the water and made double.”
Webber’s frustration at the aberration was eased by a birdie at the last and hopes his driver and wedge play will serve him well again in the final round.
“If you hit iron off the tee to play safe you’re probably going in with too much club and losing too much on the field. Twenty per cent are going to hit it driver and have a wedge in and you’ve got to try and be in that 20 per cent.
“You’ve just got to try and beat what’s in front of you which is the golf course, if I can get rid of a few of my iffy shots and wedge it as I have, there are so many chances out there.”
Keogh, in his third year of training, saw a putt lip out on the last for a 65 but is delighted to have a final tilt at winning the elusive title.
“Ultimately, it’s my last chance so I’ve got to give it a good go,” he said.
“Last year the leaders got away so I didn’t really feel in contention but hopefully tomorrow I can have a good go.
“Obviously Matt has a three shot head start and he is favourite but you can only do what you can do so we’ll see.”

Downfield’s Graham Bell was the next best Scot on three over par and two off the lead with a round to play.
“I started slowly with there bogeys in the first four holes,” admitted Fraser, who was in the last match out. “But then I had a run of three birdies and I should have had another at the last. I missed from six feet.

Ed Wood to play Gordon Yates in Lanarkshire final this evening at Hamilton

Former match-play winner Ed Wood of Crow Wood will play Gordon Yates of Colville Park in tonight’s Lanarkshire Men’s Matchplay Final.
Both players came through last night’s semi finals on the last green with the final putt. Dominic Dougan of Airdrie had gone out in three under par to hold a one hole lead over Ed Wood however three birdies in the back nine turned the game in Ed’s favour and a tricky four footer at the last for par put him in the final.
Gordon Yates game with Hamilton number two greenkeeper Brian Scott  was equally close and they came down the last hole level.  Brian knocked his shot to about 20 feet but Gordon rose to the occasion by hitting a great 52 wedge to three feet to clinch the winning birdie!!
The final will be tonight at 5.30. Thanks to Hamilton Golf club for hosting the strokeplay and matchplay events. Course has been excellent.

LASKEY LEADS WORLD SNOOKER GOLF MASTERS
Welshman two clear after opening-round seven under par

REPORT FROM NICK TEALE
Mark Laskey holds a two-stroke lead in the World Snooker Golf Masters after carding a brilliant seven-under-par 64 for his opening round at Army Golf Club on Wednesday.

The two-time HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour winner tops the leaderboard ahead of George Mullins (Langley Park Golf Club) thanks to a course-record equalling first 18. Six golfers share third on three under but are already four behind the leader.

Laskey (Brocket Hall/Team Honma) made eight birdies with his only bogey coming at the 2nd, and the Welshman says it was a not-so-perfect first shot that inadvertently set him on his way.

“I got off to a bit of a shaky start on the first hole,” he admitted. “I fatted it off the tee and ended up chipping in for birdie. That kind of steadied the ship early on and from then on I played well, kept hitting it close and making the putts.

“I played here a few years ago and I really like it. I have been struggling with the driver all year and it has been nice this week where I have hit two iron everywhere. If you play sensibly you can take some of the bogey risks out, but if you are aggressive you can find trouble. Wedge play is the key this week.

“The course is in really good condition; I really like it here.”

Among those sharing third on three under par is Race To Desert Springs Order of Merit leader Matthew Cort (Beedles Lake Golf Club), who has two wins to his name this season while Army Golf Club’s own Sam Robertshawe is one of 13 players on two under, five behind Laskey.

The World Snooker Golf Masters continues with the second round on Thursday, after which a cut to the leading 50 players and ties will be made. Spectator entry is free throughout the event and live scoring can be found at www.europrotour.com.

A two-hour highlights package of the event will be broadcast on Sky Sports on Tuesday, August 16.
