Brian Malcolm wins Kirkcudbrightshire Senior Championship on a countback
Photograph shows the winners being presented with their trophies by the county president, Mrs Jean Forrest

Hot sunny weather greeted the players for the 2016 Kirkcudbrightshire Senior Championship played over the Dalbeattie course.
Over 30 seniors played in the Championship, a figure well up on the previous year.
Dalbeattie players showed that home advantage does pay off.  It was close at the top of the leaderboard but Brian Malcolm (Dalbeattie) won the Stableford Scratch Trophy on a countback from Jock Halliday after both scored 27 pts.
In the 50-59 age group, John Niven won the quaich with a score of 30 pts.
The 60-69 age group was won with a superb 40 pts by Larry Mouat and the over-70s age group was won by Jock Halliday with 39 pts. (Jock was celebrating his 80th birthday the following day!)

 Euan Moir Wins Lanarkshire county

championship for fourth time

Euan Moir of host club Hamilton has won the Lanarkshire county championship for a fourth time.  Euan Moir, now 47, and runner-up Ronnie Maclean, aged 63, showed age is no barrier in golf by claiming the first two places.
Euan, a former Scottish mid-amateur championship finalist and previously playing off +4,  plays only occasional golf these days with twin brother Michael but still holds a +1 handicap.
Ronnie Maclean still holds a scratch handicap at Hamilton and Western Gailes and was left to rue a couple of late three putts, otherwise places might have been reversed. Sadly neiher can play in tonight’s match-play due to work commitments .

However, Jack Emerson of East Kilbride, a 15-year-old schoolboy, reversed the age gap by winning the handicap section with nett scores of  69 and 68.

The Lanarkshire youth championship, played in conjunction with the main championship, was won by Dominic Dougan of Airdrie.

Kiwi Ryan Fox wins Northern Ireland Open

after record-equalling 62

FROM THE CHALLENGE TOUR WEBSITE
Olympics-bound New Zealander Ryan Fox equalled the Galgorm Castle Golf Club course record as he stormed to victory by four strokes at the  Northern Ireland Open in partnership with Ulster Bank.
His nine under par 62 equalled Joakim Lagergren’s score in the 2014 edition of the Northern Ireland Open, but Fox threatened to go one better down the closing stretch as he secured his second European Challenge Tour title which earned him 27,200 euros.
Starting the day on ten under par, three shots behind the lead, the Kiwi wasted no time in making up the deficit as he registered a birdie and an eagle on the first two holes to draw level.
Four more birdies followed on the front nine as he made the turn in just 29 shots.
Fox made four birdies in the next six holes, but a bogey on 16 scuppered his hopes of shooting a round of 59 and so emulating the achievement of Nicolo Ravano in the recent Fred Olsen Challenge de España.
However, a 19 under par total of 265 was enough to secure victory by four shots from four players who tied for second place - overnight leader Dylan Frittelli (69), Dominic Foos, Max Orrin and Bernd Ritthammer (all 65).
In so doing, Fox became the 15th different winner from 15 events on the 2016 Challenge Tour Schedule.
“To be honest, I played exactly how I played all week,” said Fox. “But I got really hot with the putter. I played solid from tee to green the whole week, and today I left myself a lot of makeable putts.
“It got hot and it was nice to keep seeing the ball go in. I thought I was flirting with the magical number for a while, but a three-putt on 16 didn’t help that.
“My start was a bit better than Saturday; I was one over after those two holes. I holed a nice putt on the first and I was perfect on the last on the green. Yesterday, I went too far right, but I hit a great shot today and rolled in a nice putt from eight or nine feet.”
Winner of the Le Vaudreuil Golf Challenge in 2015, Fox had previously played in four Challenge Tour events in 2016, finishing second, tied fourth, tied seventh and tied 18th.
As he prepares to represent his country in Rio at the 2016 Olympic Games, Fox said he could not have asked for better preparation for the tournament, which starts in less than two weeks.
“I couldn’t have played any better and it’s nice to go into the Olympics with some form,” he said. “It’s always a good feeling to win.
“It’s hard to get your first win and sometimes it seems harder to keep doing it. It’s great to be a two-time winner on the Challenge Tour and build on the experience I had last year.
“It’ll be great in Rio, I’m looking forward to being part of the New Zealand team; we don’t get the opportunity very often in golf.
“There are three Challenge Tour players and a lot of ex-Challenge Tour players there. It shows the quality of this tour, and hopefully I can join the upper echelon of the guys who have graduated from the Challenge Tour.”
Defending champion Clément Sordet carded a final round 68 to finish in a share of sixth place alongside Wil Besseling on 14 under par.
Tournament host Michael Hoey closed with a round of 68 to take eighth place on 13 under par, two strokes clear of European Tour champions Tom Lewis and Damien McGrane.
Ross Kellett was the leading Scot in a T15 finish on 275 with four rounds of 69, 70, 68 and 68. He earned 2,151 euros.
Duncan Stewart finished T32 on 277 (72-69-66-70) and earned 1,275 euros.
Scott Henry finished T42 on 279 with rounds of 68, 70, 73 and 68. He earned 918 euros

Knox earns $75,636 for T22 finish at Baltusrol

98th US PGA Championship: Jimmy Walker celebrates 'surreal' victory at Baltusrol

Jimmy Walker is celebrating after securing a "surreal" first major win at the US PGA Championship at Baltusrol.
The 37-year-old American held off the challenge of defending champion Jason Day to win by a single stroke after a final-round 67.
Heading into his final 18 holes, Walker led Day by one and having parred every hole on the front nine, birdies at 10, 11 and 17 were enough to ensure he maintained that advantage, finishing on 14 under par.

"It's surreal. I mean, it really is," he said. "I would have said it would have happened the last couple years, the way I was playing.
"I just had not quite played as well as I would have liked to this year but I knew it was close. I felt some things were clicking last week.
"God, just to be in it and be there and have a chance and then to finish it off is just - it's so gratifying. Everything I've done up to this point, helped this happen."

Walker carded a bogey-free final round at Baltusrol
Walker carded a bogey-free final round at Baltusrol
Walker was made to work for the title until the last by Day. The Australian eagled the last, putting the pressure on Walker to make the par that would seal victory.
"It's an incredible finish, what Jason did, eagling the last hole, forcing me to make a five," he added. "It was huge. It was tough. It feels sweet. It's amazing.
"There was nothing easy about the day, really about the week, for that matter, especially coming down the last hole.
"I figured birdieing 17 was huge, and that was going to cap it off. And then Jason making eagle sure makes my job a lot harder on the last hole. So kudos to him. You wouldn't expect anything less from the best player in the world."
Englishmen Tyrrell Hatton and Paul Casey tied for 10th place on 273 with Irishman Padraig Harrington T13 on 274.
Scot Russell Knox and England's Justin Rose tied for 22nd place on 276. Knox's four rounds were 70-70-67-69. He earned $75,636.
