Greig Kennedy (Hazlehead) scored the upset win of the morning when he ousted Matthew Clark (Kilmacolm), ranked 481 in the world, by 4 and 2.
Another good win by a local was that of young Royal Aberdeen member Craig Leith over the reigning Scottish boys' champion, Eric McIntosh (Bruntsfield Links) by 4 and 3.
Seeded teenager Sandy Scott (Nairn) marches on, his second-round win by a 7 and 5 margin.
Top seed and defending champion Robert MacIntyre  (Glencruitten) had to work hard for a one-hole win oer Calum Hill (Aberdour). The left-hander from Oban had been two up after 10.
Aberdeen Links champion Barry Reid (Caledonian) is through to the third round with a 3 and 2 win over Alan Sutherland (Cupar).
Scottish youths champion Stephen Roger (Cruden Bay) had a comfortable second-round 5 and 4 win over Stirling graduate Angus Carrick (Douglas Park) whose father David won the Scottish amateur championship of 1985 at Southerness.
Portlethen's Clark Brechin had a win that topped Greig Kennedy's achievement. Brechin KO'd World No 243 Liam Johnston (Dumfries and Co) by 2 and 1.
Calum Fyfe (Cawder), World No. 279, was beaten on the 18th green by Craig Morrison (Haggs Castle).
What a marvellous afternoon for North and North-east players, topped by Andrew Burgess (Nairn), pictured right, scoring a 3 and 1 victory over the seeded Craig Ross (Kirkhill) who is No. 65 in the World Rankings.
Steven Buchan (Royal Aberdeen) bowled over George Burns (Williamwood) who, 12 months ago, KOd top seed Grant Forrest from the championship. Buchan won 2 and 1.
Another Royal Aberdeen player, Fintan McKenna had an excellent 2 and 1 win over Australian Ben Ferguson, who has Scottish parents and has been selected to play for Scotland in the upcoming boys' internationals.
Seeded Barry Hume (Haggs Castle), a former Scottish amateur champion before his spell as a professional, advanced to the last 32 with a 2 and 1 win over Kieran Cantley (Liberton).
Another top seed, Connor Syme (Drumoig), was a 4 and 2 winner over Robert Watson (Muckhart) but the seeded Jamie Savage (Cawder) got dusted down 6 and 4 by Calum Hill, the Tantallon one, not the Calum Hill from Aberdour (there are two of them in the field).
Craig Howie, the seed from Peebles, knocked off one of the North and North-east challengers, beatin Calum Bruce (Duff House Royal) by 4 and 3.
"Old Man" McIntosh, a former Scottish assistants champion in the 1990s and reinstated as an amateur fairly recently, continues the great comeback which has so far earned the 47-year-old a place in the Scotland team for the Home Internationals. He beat Eamon Bradley (Mt Ellen), who plays on the US college circuit, by 2 and 1.
Youths champion Stephen Roger's run was ended in the third round by Andrew Gibson. The Blairgowrie player won by 2 and 1 after being two up at the turn.
Top seed MacIntyre made it through to the last 32 with another hard-working 2 and 1 win over Dalgleish.
Sandy Scott, pictured left, has yet to play the last few holes. In the third round he had another big win, by 5 and 4 over McMehen.
Aberdeen Links champion Barry Reid bowed out, beaten 2 and 1 by the up and coming Jamie Stewart.
A generally good day for the North and North-east players ended on a high note when young Ben Murray came back from two down after 10 to win his match by two holes against K Reid
of Balmore.
We are down to the last 32 now and the first three ties off from 8am Thursday feature North-east men playing each other and Mark  Halliday, one of three Royal Aberdeen players in the same quarter of the draw, taking on the seeded former champion, Barry Hume at 8.24.

English men's top seed Enefer marches into final 32

Top seed Will Enefer marched confidently into the final 32 as the match play got underway at the men’s English Amateur Championship at Ganton Golf Club in Yorkshire.
The 18-year-old from Wrekin in Shropshire beat Devon’s Matthew Wells 3 and 2 and tomorrow he will face Jake Burnage, a fellow member of the England men’s A squad.
Enefer, pictured top, from Wrekin in Shropshire, was aware of the pressure of being top qualifier, remarking: “It feels good to be number one but everyone expects you to do well and you can get ahead of yourself. You’ve got to stay in the moment and play each round as it happens.”
He clearly took his own advice today, getting ahead after the second hole and was never down during the match. “It was a good day’s work, it felt as though it was always going to go my way,” he said.
Burnage – who, like Wells, is a Saunton member - made quick work of his match, defeating his opponent 7 and 6, which was the day’s biggest winning margin.
The day began with 13 preliminary matches with the winners going forward to join the main draw – and, as always, the ups and downs of matchplay brought some unexpected casualties, among them England internationals James Hill (The Oaks) and Ashton Turner (Kenwick Park).
Turner was toppled on the 19th by Cheshire county champion James Newton (Prestbury), despite a dramatic fightback. He had been three down after 12, but won the 13th and 14th with birdies and got back to all square when he holed a 50-footer on the 18th.
“I couldn’t believe it, I was about 40ft away and I’d been thinking two putts and I will just about scrape a win,” said Newton. But his turn came on the 19th where he holed a 15ft putt for birdie and the win.
“It was the best game of match play I’ve had in a while.”
Many of the matches were tight with six going into extra time and two reaching the 20th. In one, Jordan Sundborg (Shanklin and Sandown) ended the challenge of Max Jordan (Langley Park) who equalled the nine-under par course record at Scarborough South Cliff to claim his place in the match play.
In the other, Yorkshire’s James Cass (Fulford) beat Tom Plumb (Sherborne) at the end of a very even match, eventually edging through when his opponent found a bunker. “I’m chuffed, I said to myself that if I could make the matchplay it would be brilliant and anything further would be a bonus,” said the 19-year-old. “I’m just enjoying it.”
Four other Yorkshire players successfully reached the last 32: Dan Brown (Masham), Steven Robins (Hull), David Hague (Malton and Norton) and Alex Fitzpatrick (Hallamshire).

Six Scots make flying start in chase for £10,000

PGA EuroPro Tour prize

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Six Scots have got off to a great start in the chase for the £10,000 first prize in this week's PGA EuroPro Tour 54-hole tournament at Close House Golf Club, Northumberland.
Louis Gaughan (Bathgate), Kris Nicol (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre), John Henry (Clydebank and Dist), Wallace Booth (Eastwood), James Steven (Clydeway Golf) and Fraser McKenna (Balmore) all shot three-under-par 68s to end the first day in a multiple tie for fourth place.
They are one shot behind the trio setting the pace on 67 - Englishmen Robert Watson and Adam Hodkinson plus Welshman Richard James.

Other Scots in the top 20 are Callum Macaulay, joint 13th with a 69 and Sean Lawrie (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) and Archerfield's Zack Saltman, T19 on the 70 mark.

For one Saltman it was not a good day. Lloyd shot a 77 to be sharing 131st place overnight with little hope of making the top 50 and ties who will advance to the third and final round.

Scots relegated to lower placings in their own

Nick Faldo Series Qualifier

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
As feared, the loophole in the Nick Faldo Junior Series qualifying competitions for the Grand Final, which allows any nationality to play in any qualifier anywhere, saw the Scots crowded out by "outsiders" in the Scottish qualifying 54-hole tournament at The Duke's Course, St Andrews.
Brad Robinson, from just over the border at Close House Golf Club, Northumberland, finished two strokes clear of the boys' field in which an Australian finished second, a Dubai player third and an Indian fourth.
Robinson shot 73, 73 and 70 for three-over-par 216.
The leading Scots were Jack Currie (Greenock) and Lewis Fenn (Dunbar) who finished joint fifth with a New Zealander on 226.
It was much the same story in the girls' event with Daphne Van Houten from the Netherlands winning by four strokes with rounds of 75, 77 and 77 for 16-over-par 229.
Louise Duncan (West Kilbride) was runner-up on 233, Carinne Taylor (Nairn) third on 235 and Molly Richmond (Strathaven) fourth on 240.

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
It was unlucky 13 for young Scot Sam Kiloh in the final round of the German PGA Development Tour's Polish Open at Sierra Golf Club, Wejherowo.
Heading for a top 10 finish, the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre player from Portlethen ran up a triple bogey 7 at the 13th hole but still managed to return a par 72 score for a two-under-par total of 214, the same as Ross Cameron from Ellon.
Both earned 445 euros each.
They finished nine shots behind two GErmans who played off for the 5,000 euros first prize and title. Heinrich Arkenau beat Sascha Schmidt over the extra holes.
Alexander Culverwell (Dunbar) tied for 30th place on 217 and earned 337 euros.
Ellon's Kevin Duncan had a nightmare final round of 78 which includes three 7s, triple bogeys at the par-4 first and seventh, and a double bogey at the par-5 17th in halves of 41-37. He finished tied 42nd and earned 250 euros.

European Tour boss Keith Pelley has flagged a radical change in the way we watch – and play – golf.
Pelley, less than a year into his role as chief executive, is signalling the Tour’s desire to play SIX-HOLE events in its 2018 schedule.
The Canadian has consistently mooted plans to embrace new formats and change to modernise golf, with players wearing shorts in pro-ams and introducing measures to speed up play.
And he says short-form golf will open up a whole new market.
“Golf has to be a little more open to letting the youth actually participate," Pelley told BBC Radio this week. “There's no question that is something we believe in as well.
“You look at some of the new formats that have been created -- when you look at adventure golf, or the brand Top Golf … it's really geared towards millennials, so the way that people are participating in the game is completely different.
“Let's be honest -- and scientific data proves this -- attention spans are decreasing as opposed to increasing and it's completely different when the choice people have to consume content now is so different than it was 35-40 years ago.
“So you have to change, people's time is so precious that golf – I think every golf course being built needs to be six holes, six holes, six holes – so that people can go at the beginning before they go to work.”
Pelley said the success of Twenty20 in boosting attendances as a reason for change with TV audiences flocking to short-form cricket.
“From our perspective … we are looking to create a format that would be six holes.
“That could be an hour, an hour-and-a-half content program which would be very entertaining.
“Our leaderboard is always filled with a bunch of different flags and it would probably be a country competition, so you could probably see England playing Scotland in six-hole match play with time clocks and music and so forth going on and it would be an aspirational goal to be even remotely as successful as Twenty20 cricket.
“But If you're not prepared to change, if you're not prepared to be innovative, if you're not prepared to take chances, then I do believe that the sports that aren't will fall behind.
“We'd like to experiment ... in 2017 and maybe roll it out in 2018. It's still in the infancy stages of being developed.
“The tradition, the integrity of the game, the 72-hole tournament will always be there in some form. But if you catapult ahead 10 or 15 years, the game of golf will be consumed completely differently and there will be different formats that will be successful as content entertainment makers.”
Pelley didn’t rule out changing the European Tour’s name to reflect its increasingly global nature.
Europe and the Asian Tour recently announced a strategic partnership and with just 19 of the 50 2016 European Tour events staged in Europe, Pelley is open to rebranding.
“You can't play 47 weeks in Europe, hence the reason that we started to move all around the world and since then we've expanded and as early as this week we've announced a strategic alliance with the Asian Tour, so our position in Asia is going to grow: we've opened an office recently in South Korea.”

EDITOR: The R and A are pushing NINE-HOLE tournaments. Why is Mr Pelley not following its lead before such a radical change as SIX-HOLE competitions.
