AMERICAN P.E. TEACHER SKIP TAYLOR LEADS BY TWO AT ARBROATH

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Skip Taylor, a 55-year-old American high school physical education teacher who doubles up as a senior pro golfer, shot a five-under-par 65 to lead the small field by two shots at the halfway stage of the independent Senior Golf Circuit's Arbroath Smokie tournament.
Taylor, pictured, from Henderson, North Carolina, failed to survive the Monday pre-qualifier for the Senior Open, beginning at Carnoustie
today (THURSDAY) and jumped at the chance of competing in another competition during his first visit to Scotland.
He has been a PE teacher for over 30 years but started competing as a pro golfer in minor senior events in the States when he passed his 50th birthday.
"I'm not good enough to give up the day job!" said Skip who leads by two from former Ryder Cup player Peter Baker and two fellow Englishmen, Mike Field and Tony Lawrence who share second place on 67.
Still in with a chance is Carnoustie's Fraser Mann who shot a 68 to be.
In the field is former Manchester United footballer and Welsh international Clayton Blackmore who shot a respectable par round of 70.
Blackmore, pictured left,  also played in last week's Aberdeen Senior Masters at Meldrum House.

English pair lead weather-hit Carris Tophy

 on seven-under-par at Hunstanton

FROM THE ENGLAND GOLF WEBSITE
English players Angus Flanagan and Kristian Tannum Donaldson share the lead on seven-under par in the weather-interrupted second round of the Carris Trophy at Hunstanton on the Norfolk coast.
Thunder and lightning at the end of a day of scorching sunshine and strong winds forced play to be abandoned. Five groups still have to complete their second round and play will resume at 8am on Thursday.
It is hoped to start the third round of the English U18 boys’ open championship at 10am.
The Nations Cup competition, played over the first 36 holes, was completed and won by England I who finished five shots ahead of Denmark I.
The winning team was Toby Briggs of Dunston Hall; Norfolk, Matty Lamb of Hexham, Northumberland; and Dan O’Loughlin of Ruddington Grange, Nottinghamshire.
The combination of sunshine and winds – which were strongest in the middle of the day – made for testing conditions, but Flanagan, pictured top, (St George’s Hill) shot four-under 68 and Tannum Donaldson (Buckinghamshire) returned 69 to top the international leaderboard.
Overnight co-leader Matias Honkala on Finland is chasing them on five-under par, after a second round 71, while Sweden’s Oscar Teiffel also scored 71 for a four-under total. His round included an eagle two on the 12th where he drove the green and holed the putt.
When play was suspended another four players were on one-under par after 36 holes: Charlie Thornton (Fulford), Dario Antonisse of the Netherlands, Jacob Skov of Denmark and Matty Lamb (Hexham)
Flanagan’s 68 was the low round of the day and he commented: “I felt pretty rough this morning after yesterday’s sun but I played really nicely and everything went the way I wanted it to.
“I felt a lot better when I was three-under after nine and I saw everyone dropping back and my name going up. I like watching the scoreboards, I want to know what I need to do.
His round included five birdies and one bogey on the 17th.
“It was a good bogey because I had to get up and down from 80 yards! So I’m pretty happy,” said the 17-year-old.
Flanagan was an England U16 international and has come into this event in good form. He’s enjoying the challenge of links golf and the inventive shots it demands, remarking: “I love this course.”
Tannum Donaldson (pictured left) was co-leader after the first round and wasted no time in staking his claim to stay there after round two. He went out in the first group of the day and set the target with his 69.
He had six birdies in his round, making the most of the par fives and a hot putter. His highlight was the difficult 17th, when he hit a three-iron approach, straight into the wind, which finished inside 10ft.
“It was a lot tougher out there today,” said the 16-year-old. “The wind was much stronger and it was tricky, especially on the drives on the back nine. To keep it one-under for the back nine was probably the best I could have done.”
Honkala is another player in form, having recently won on the Finnair Junior Tour and been runner-up in both the German and the Finnish boys’ championships. His verdict on his 71 today was: “It’s good, one-under is ok. The wind was really tough today and I haven’t played in that much wind for a long time.”
He also secured an eagle on the long eight, where his three-iron approach finished with 6ft of the hole.
Stan Lewis of Chartridge Park in Buckinghamshire hit the shot of the day with a hole-in-one on the 167-yard par three 7th where he hit a wedge with the wind behind.

Scottish stars miss Home Internationals at

Nairn to play in US Amateur Championship

The Scotland team of six who won the European title for the second year in a row.

NEWS RELEASE FROM SCOTTISH GOLF
Four Scots have qualified to play in next month's United States Amateur Championship, bidding to follow in the footsteps of Richie Ramsay.
Thanks to their World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) inside the top 50, Grant Forrest, Robert MacIntyre, Ewen Ferguson and Connor Syme will all tee up at Oakland Hills from August 15-21.
It's a return trip for Forrest (Craigielaw) and Bearsden's Ferguson, currently nursing a hand injury, after the Walker Cup team winners both played in the event at Olympia Fields Country Club 12 months ago.
Indeed, Forrest will compete for a third year in a row after playing in 2014 alongside compatriot Bradley Neil.
Forrest, MacIntyre and Syme were all part of Scotland's recent defence of the European Men's Amateur team title, while the trio are also representing GB and I in this week's St Andrews Trophy. Drumoig’s Syme also won the Australian Amateur title at the start of the year, while MacIntyre (Glencruitten) finished runner-up in the British Amateur Championship.
Syme said: "Top 50 was my target at the start of the year and reaching there has now helped me achieve goals in qualifying for the US Amateur and competing for GB and I in the St Andrews Trophy.
"The four of us are now in the top 30 in the world rankings so we're all chasing each other's tails and the competition is great. I'm looking forward to the US Amateur as I've never played competitively in America before and I know Oakland Hills is an amazing course."
All four players now won’t compete for Scotland in the Home Internationals at Nairn (August 10-12) after qualifying for the US Amateur.
A total of 312 players from over 20 countries will contest the US Amateur title, with three-time European Tour winner Ramsay a past winner of the event in 2006 at Hazeltine, this year's Ryder Cup venue.
Oakland Hills hosted the 2004 Ryder Cup, while Padraig Harrington claimed Major glory when he won the PGA Championship at the course in 2008.
The top 50 point leaders and anyone tying for 50th place on WAGR as of 29 June are exempt from US Amateur Sectional Qualifying.

Scottish boys' stroke-play: Round 2 is scrubbed, field cut to

leading 40 and ties on first-round scores

The Scottish U18 boys' open amateur stroke-play championship has been reduced to three rounds with the final 36 holes at Lanark Golf Club being played on Thursday.
Thunder and lightning first caused a suspension of play in the second round very early this morning.
With the storm continuing and the weather forecast for the rest of the day not good, the organisers later decided to scrub the second round play and declare the cut to the leading 40 and ties on the first-round scores.
This meant that 46 boys with scores of 74 and better qualified to play on Thursday.
