Tiger Woods will not make comeback this season

FROM SKYSPORTS.COM
Tiger Woods has withdrawn from next week's US PGA Championship and will not play again this season, according to agent Mark Steinberg.
Woods has not played since the Wyndham Championship 11 months ago and has had two operations on his back since.
His absence from the year's final major means he will have missed all four in a calendar year for the first time in his illustrious career.

England Golf News Release from Hunstanton, Norfolk

Carris Trophy starts with super
scoring in the sun
Super scoring in the hot sunshine marked the first day of the boys’ Carris Trophy at Hunstanton in Norfolk, with two players leading the way on four-under 68.
Finland’s Matias Honkala set the target early on and was later joined by England’s Kristian Tannum Donaldson (Buckinghamshire) who produced his first bogey-free round in competition.
Right behind them are six players on 69: boy international Toby Briggs (Dunston Hall), Conor White (Bridgnorth), Thomas Harbord (Castle Eden), Angus Flanagan (St George’s Hill), Sweden’s Oscar Teiffel and Michael Gilbert (Chelmsford) who was runner-up in last week’s U16 McGregor Trophy
Altogether 31 boys made the most of the scoring conditions in the first round of the English U18 boys’ open stroke play championship, by either matching or beating par.
Honkala and Briggs (image © Leaderboard Photography) set off in the same group at 7.30am and, said the Norfolk player: “That was perfect, it didn’t get baking hot until we were about on the 15th.” Both players dropped a short on the long second, which should offer a birdie opportunity, but then Honkala got going, with four birdies before the turn and two on the back nine before another bogey on 17.
“I was hitting it pretty good and missed only one fairway and hit 16 greens,” said the 17-year-old, who is playing in the Carris for the first time. “Scoring conditions were good, but the course was getting pretty hard because it was so warm.”
Briggs got his round going with an eagle three on the 8th and said: “I created another four birdies but also had three three-putts and hit a ball in the water, so it had the potential to be much better and I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”
Briggs was quickly joined by other players on three-under, but no-one challenged the lead until Tannum Donaldson finished in the late afternoon, with his flawless 68.
He had one stroke of luck, when he holed an 80-footer for birdie two on the blind par three 14th. But for the rest, he said: “I was hitting fairways and greens and very, very rarely got myself in trouble.”
The 16-year-old – a former boys’ champion from Berks, Bucks and Oxon - is playing in the Carris for the first time and surpassed his personal goal of a two-under start to the championship.
“It was a perfect day for scoring with not much wind,” he remarked with an eye on tomorrow’s forecast which promises more sunshine, but strengthening winds.

Scottish boys' stroke play championship at Lanark

Ben from Down Under finishes day on top

Australian Ben Ferguson, with a four-under-par 66, set the pace on a day of low scoring in the first round of the Scottish U18 boys' open amateur stroke-play championship at Lanark Golf Club.
Ferguson had six birdies and two bogeys in halves of 34 and 32.
His closest rival is Sandyhills' junior member R Yu Zhu who birdied five of the last eight holes, coming home in 31 to get in the mix.
Sharing third place are Scots Robert Watson (Muckhart) and Jamie Stewart (Old Ranfurly) on 68. Watson had only one bogey, at the third, and three birdies. Stewart left his birdies late - at the 14th, 16th and 17th for 33 home.

Tragic death of star footballer John White on July 21, 1964 recalled

Lightning strikes pin, destroys practice green

in Iowa ... so don't shelter under a tree!

FROM GOLFCHANNEL.COM
Golf and lightning don't exactly mix. Just ask the Bishop from "Caddyshack."
But we got another reminder of just how dangerous some weather on the course can be last week in Iowa, when Rick Tegtmeier posted this photo to Twitter, showing the aftermath of a lightning strike on the practice green at Des Moines Golf and Country Club, where he is Director of Grounds.
If you're wondering about those long tentacle-looking marks protruding from the cup, we'll let The Weather Channel explain.
When lightning strikes earth, it branches out along the ground which, in this case, happened to be a green. These currents fan out from the strike centre in a tendril pattern. A lightning bolt can be fatal up to 100 feet away from the point of the strike.
Tegtmeier followed up the photo with another tweet that he wasn't holding out hope for a recovery, adding that the intense heat from the lightning stike melted the cup:
So next time you hear the lightning warning horn, do yourself a favour and head for cover ... but NOT UNDER A TREE!
That's where, on July 21, 1964, the Tottenham Hotspur and Scotland international footballer John White took shelter during a lightning storm at Crews Hill golf course, Enfield in the south of England  ... lightning hit the tree and killed John.
So, unless you can get inside a house or a car, the safest place when lightning is flashing around you, is actually out in the open where nothing can draw a lightning bolt to you.
The odds are millions to one against you being hit by lightning but that didn't stop John White being a victim of a bolt from the blue.

Qualifying at four Angus venues for Senior Open at Carnoustie, starting Thursday

Eight-hole play-off at Montrose on Monday

FROM THE EUROPEAN SENIOR TOUR WEBSITE
Paraguayan Carlos Franco will join his brother Angel, a member of the European Senior Tour, at the Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex, teeing off at Carnoustie on Thursday, as one of 38 successful Monday qualifiers for this year’s tournament.
Franco topped the leaderboard at Panmure Golf Club, one of four qualifying venues yesterday, after carding a two under par 68.
Fellow Senior Tour regulars Jorge Berendt, Bob Cameron and former European Tour winner Andrew Murray also secured their places at Carnoustie after their rounds at Panmure.
Bidding for places in this year’s tournament were 395 golfers, with 38 qualifying to play at Carnoustie from July 21-24.
With qualifying rounds taking place at Downfield, Monifieth, Montrose and Panmure Golf Clubs, each required a play-off to determine who will be teeing up on Thursday alongside the world’s finest over-50s golfers.
Montrose Golf Club played host to a thrilling eight-hole play-off which saw Irishman Peter O’Hagan successfully qualify ahead of amateur Peter Jackson.
The pair played head-to-head for the final four play-off holes, and O’Hagan scored par on the eighth extra hole to book his place
Joel Edwards carded the lowest score at Montrose, a four-under-par 67, and five-time Senior Tour winner Nick Job finished second with a three-under-par 68.
Satoshi Oide and Stephen McNally carded the lowest rounds of the day as they each finished on five under par at Downfield and Monifieth respectively.
Former European Tour winner Stephen Bennett qualified from Downfield with a two under par 71.
The Senior Open Championship tees off on Thursday with American Marco Dawson defending the title he won last year at Sunningdale.
Dawson will face stiff competition from the likes of Miguel Angel Jiménez, three-time Senior Major winner Bernhard Langer and home favourite Colin Montgomerie.
