Shepherd leads way with a 66 in Boyd Quaich

Breezy conditions in St Andrews made scoring difficult for most of the field on day 1 of the 68th Boyd Quaich international students' tournament.

With the field split between the Old Course and New Course it was the New which played the more difficult, the lowest scores coming from Callum Cochrane (Newcastle University) and Jo Du Feu (University of South Wales) who both shot level par 71s.
Alasdair McDougall (Mercer University, USA) lies joint second on level par following a 72 on the Old course. However, it was Laird Shepherd from Stirling University who stole the show with an excellent 66 (-6) on the Old Course which included 7 birdies, his only blemish coming on 17.
A total of 14 students, including George Burns from host University, St Andrews, are sitting at +2 or better and will be hoping to reduce Shepherd’s 6 shot lead during Wednesday’s 2nd round.
The field will be cut to 30 players at lunch time with the afternoon 3rd Round taking place on the New Course, followed by Thursday morning’s final round on the Old Course.
Scoring can be followed on the Saints Golf website www.saintsgolf.co.uk

McColl and Gaughan lead Scots challenge at

Scottish Masters

By COLIN FARQUHARSON

Four Scots in the top 10 was not a bad score for the host country at the end of the first day of the Eagle Orchid Scottish Masters EuroPro Tour 54-hole tournament over the Montrose Links today.
Englishmen Luke Johnson from King's Lynn set a hot pace with a seven-under-par 64 which included an eagle 3 at the long sixth and seven birdies in halves of 33 and 31. He did bogey the ninth and 16th or he would have had a commanding lead.
The top four places are occupied by Englishmen.
Top Scots are Jordan McColl (Kingsbarns Pro Academy) and Louis Gaughan (Bathgate), joint fifth on five-under-par 66.
McColl had halves of 33 with a bag of six birdies while the improving Gaughan had a bogey-free, five-birdie halves of 34-32.
The field will be cut to the leading 50 and ties after the second round.

SUMMARY FROM NICK TEALE

Nottinghamshire golfer shoots seven under opening round for one-shot lead
By NICK TEALE
Luke Johnson leads the HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour’s Eagle Orchid Scottish Masters at Montrose Golf Links by one shot after carding a seven-under-par first round 64.
Mark Ramsdale, Max Penny and Greg Payne share second on six under par after the first 18 on the Medal Course at Montrose, one of the World’s oldest golf courses.
Johnson (King’s Lynn Golf Club) had completed his round before the heavy afternoon rain set in. The weather did force a brief suspension in play as standing water was cleared from greens, and made for a testing round for those in the second half of the draw.
The 24-year-old from Nottinghamshire made a steady start to his tournament with five pars before eagling the 6th to set the ball rolling. Consecutive birdies followed before a dropped shot at the 9th, the first of two bogeys with the second to came at 16. Five back-nine birdies included back-to-back threes to finish and he signed for a 64 for the overnight lead.
Payne (Chobham GC / MindSet4Golf) is the Race To Desert Springs Order Of Merit leader with two second-place finishes to his name already this season. He occupies that position again after his unblemished first round at Montrose.
His company in second is Ramsdale (Formby Golf Club), who also made six birdies in his opening round, and Max Penny (Alderley Edge) who recovered from a five at the par-four first to card a 65 consisting of six birdies, and eagle and two bogeys.
The Eagle Orchid Scottish Masters continues with the second round tomorrow, July 6, with a cut to the leading 50 players and ties to be made after 36 holes before Thursday’s final round. The tournament carries a £50,000 prize fund with the winner collecting £10,000.
Spectator entry is free throughout the event and live scoring can be found at www.europrotour.com. Highlights from Montrose Golf Links will air on Sky Sports on Tuesday, July 19.

SWISS SENIORS OPEN WINNER TO PLAY

 IN ABERDEEN SENIOR MASTERS

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Tim Helen, the 55-year-old Texan who won the Swiss Seniors Open title at the weekend for the second time in four years, has filed an entry for next week's Aberdeen Senior Masters over 54 holes at Meldrum House, Oldmeldrum.
Helen, who finished birdie-birdie for his latest win at Golf Club Bad Raz, has won five times in all on the European Senior Tour for pros aged 50 and over.
The Aberdeen Senior Masters is a tournament on the independent Senior Golf Circuit for professionals - and Category 1 amateurs - aged 48 and over. It is run by a Scot, David James from Dumfries, who played as an amateur for Scotland in the home internationals of 1985 and still competes as a senior pro.
Said Helen after his second Swiss victory:
“It’s fantastic to win again, it had been a couple of years. Looking back, I’ve won every other year. My last victory was in 2014 and I won three times in 2012, so this is my year.”
Thelen finished one shot ahead of Englishman Simon P Brown and the pair will cross swords again in the Aberdeen Senior Masters which has a £50,000 prize fund with a first prize of £10,000.
The tournament, won last year by Spain's Miguel Martin, who is not defending the title, is jointly sponsored by Thistle Windows, the Gym Rental Company  and Meldrum House Hotel.
Former Ryder Cup star Paul Broadhurst, Paul Wesselingh, Senior PGA champion Robert Arnott, Andrew Oldcorn, Peter Baker, Kenny Hutton, Stephen McAllister, Brendon McGovern and Jonathan Lomas  are also among the 110  entries.
There will be no charge for spectators or for car parking and the starting tee times will range from 8am to 2pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday next week. There is no cut.  Monday is the official practice day at Meldrum House.
