Great Scott! Henderson swoops to lead

with a late 65 in Northern Open

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
It's 20 years since Scott Henderson won the Northern Open at Cruden Bay but the 46-year-old Aberdonian showed he's no back number by shooting a five-under-par 65 to lead at the end of the first round of this week's 72-hole tournament, one of the oldest in the Tartan Tour schedule, at Royal Dornoch Golf Club.
The Kings Links Golf Centre player had a bag of seven birdies, including four in the first six holes.
"I got a bit of a break as the wind died a bit when we were playing the 11th and 12th before it was back to full throttle at the 18th," said Scott whose Northern Open win in 1996 was achieved in gale-force winds over the final day..
"It is hard for me to get excited about that score as I'm not chuffed how I'm hitting it at the moment. But, if you are not hitting it at your best, this is probably a good course to be playing as it is not just about smashing driver all the time."
Henderson came in late to demote clubhouse leader Greig Hutcheon (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre Inchmalro), the 43-year-old Northern Open winner in 2010, who had only 27 putts in compiling a three-under 67.
He holed an "absolute monster" (60-70ft) at the 11th for one of his five birdies
"I've been struggling for a long time with a troublesome pain that I've now discovered is a pinched nerve in my left shoulder/neck," said the man who had dominated the Tartan Tour in recent years.
"The good thing about finding the diagnosis is that I know what exercises and stretching I need to do to help it and, apart from the first couple of shots on the range, I felt fine out there today."
Sharing third place on 69 are Aberdonian Greg McBain, the Newmachar tour pro, and defending champion Chris Kelly.
Kelly had two birdies, at the eighth after a wedge to 6ft, and the 12th where he holed from 15ft
"I only got here just before 11pm last night after making a six-and-a-bit hour drive from Gosforth, where I missed out in The Open regional qualifier said last year's Scottish professional champion.
"I putted awful in that but today I was pretty steady, though I don't hold out much hope of hanging on to my title as I have not been playing well."
McBain, 32-year-old two-time Paul Lawrie Invitational winner, had
three front-nine birdies, at the first, fifth and ninth, "all pretty much tap-ins"
"As always, the course is very good but the rough is brutal. I hit a few loose tee shots on the way in but, apart from that, it was pretty steady, " said McBain.
"I did my PGA training up here from 2007-11 and met my wife, Kirsten, during that time. Her family are from here so I'm getting free lodgings and fed like a king this week."

World No. 1 amateur Jon Rahm turns pro

NEWS RELEASE
Jon Rahm, the world’s top-ranked amateur, is now officially a professional. The former Arizona State stand-out and two-time Hogan Award winner from Spain made the move after earning low-amateur honours with a T-23 finish at the U.S. Open.

“It’s a special moment being where I am and being this course and today the last day of my amateur career,” Rahm, pictured, said after his final-round, even-par 70 on Sunday at Oakmont.
Rahm, who signed with Lagardere Sports for management and marketing representation, will compete on a sponsor exemption this week at the Quicken Loans National at Congressional, his first event as a pro.
He has also received exemptions into the Barracuda Championship, Barbasol Championship, RBC Canadian Open, Travelers Championship and John Deere Classic.

USGA regret 'distraction' caused by ruling

against Dustin Johnson at US Open

NEWS RELEASE
The USGA have admitted their regret at "the distraction" caused by the way it handled the controversial ruling against eventual 2016 US Open winner Dustin Johnson.
Johnson won his first major championship at Oakmont Country Club by three shots on Sunday, but the final two hours of the tournament were played under a cloud of uncertainty.
On the fifth hole with a three-foot putt for par, Johnson's ball rolled a fraction backwards after he had completed his practice putting strokes on the fifth green, and it was determined at the time - with playing-partner Lee Westwood's full agreement - that the American had not addressed the ball before it moved.
Johnson and early leader Shane Lowry were tied as late as the 13th hole.
A USGA rules official determined quickly that Johnson had done nothing to cause the ball to move and Johnson played on without being assessed a penalty.
As Johnson built up a lead over Lowry, another USGA official approached him two hours later while on the 12th tee to say the incident on the fifth green was going to be reviewed and a penalty was still possible.
Johnson celebrates with the US Open trophy

"Upon reflection, we regret the distraction caused by our decision to wait until the end of the round to decide on the ruling," the statement read.
"It is normal for rulings based on video evidence to await the end of a round, when the matter can be discussed with the player before the score card is returned.
"While our focus on getting the ruling correct was appropriate, we created uncertainty about where players stood on the leaderboard after we informed Dustin on the 12th tee that his actions on the fifth green might lead to a penalty."
By not making a decision sooner, the USGA opened the door to criticism from many of Johnson's golfing peers like Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth.
Butch Harmon was quick to praise Dustin Johnson for the display that saw him claim a first major tit
McIlroy, who missed the cut at Oakmont, said: "This is ridiculous. No penalty whatsoever for DJ. Let the guy play without this crap in his head. Amateur hour from USGA."
Spieth added: "Let me get this straight. DJ doesn't address it. It's ruled that he didn't cause it to move. Now you tell him he may have? Now? This a joke?"

Nairn Golf Club give Murray Urquhart
key teaching post
Murray Urquhart (right) with Nairn Golf Club captain Ian Hutchinson and some junior members.
HIGHLAND LINKS NEWS RELEASE
Former European Tour player Murray Urquhart is to lead a drive to enhance Nairn Golf Club’s junior programme as part of a new role as full-time teaching professional at the internationally-renowned club.
Murray, who has been a PGA professional for 17 years and was a full-time competitive player for seven years, has joined Nairn from Spey Valley Golf Course in Aviemore.
One of Scotland’s leading teaching professionals, he will assist Nairn’s 1,300 members and 110-strong junior section, as well as visitors to the Moray Firth club, which has hosted both the Walker Cup and Curtis Cup and this year will be the venue for the 2016 Men’s Home Internationals competition.
Nairn is also part of Highland Golf Links which promotes golf tourism in the Highlands and offers Play and Stay packages in association with leading hotels in the area.
The post provides something of a homecoming for Murray who was a Nairn member as a youngster and practiced at the club when he became a touring professional.
He said: “I am delighted to be involved with such a vibrant members’ club and one that is so popular 12 months of the year.
“It is a great opportunity to engage with the members, help them play better golf and enjoy their game more. My role will also enhance the experience of players visiting Nairn.
“In addition, a major focus for me will be to take forward the junior programme, to work on their game and improve the pathway for young players from pre-teenage years to competitive golf.
“For me, teaching is the next best thing to playing and it’s an exciting prospect to pass on the knowledge I’ve gained throughout my career to help people to improve their skills.
“Being such a busy and well known club, both national and internationally, it is important we have a good professional service here.”
Murray said another attraction for him in taking up the post is the excellent range of facilities at Nairn: “The club has a great driving range, pitching area and putting green, plus a fantastic nine-hole course which is good for younger players and beginners.
“We also have the indoor swing studio and simulator, where we can work on players’ games when the weather is not so good.”
Murray, who was also previously attached to Inverness Golf Club, played on the European Tour, the European Challenge Tour and South African Sunshine Tour. He competed in the 2005 Open Championship at St Andrews and won the Northern Open at Skibo in 2007.
Fraser Cromarty, CEO at Nairn Golf Club and chairman of Highland Golf Links, said: “We are excited about bringing Murray on board and having his vast experience as a player and teaching pro to help our members and visitors.
“He will improve their games and enhance the golf experience for all, whether junior, senior, beginner or scratch player and will undoubtedly be a huge asset to the club.”
