Syme and McDougall top seeds

 for match-play, 11 Scots qualify
NEWS RELEASE FROM THE RandA

Porthcawl, South Wales: Connor Syme produced some excellent golf in difficult conditions to lead the qualifiers for the match play stage of The 121st Amateur Championship at Royal Porthcawl.

Syme,  pictured left, who reached the semi-final of The Amateur Championship at Royal Portrush in 2014, carded a 3-under-par 68 in strong, gusting winds at Pyle and Kenfig to finish on 6-under-par after the two stroke-play rounds.
Alasdair McDougall finished two shots behind his fellow Scot to secure his place in the match play stage. The overnight leader, Frenchman Antoine Rozner, finished on 2-under-par after posting a five-over-par 76 at the same venue and was tied with England’s Harry Hall.
The cut fell at 5-over-par and 79 players reached the match play stage which gets underway at Royal Porthcawl tomorrow.
A total of 11 Scots qualified - C Syme, J Savage, C Ross, L Allan, B Hume, R MacIntyre, C Howie, E Ferguson, C Maclean, G Forrest, A McDougall.
Syme, who won the Australian Amateur Championship in January and was part of the winning Scottish team in the European Amateur Team Championship last year, got off to a good start with a birdie at the 2nd and picked up two further shots on the back nine in a bogey-free round.
McDougall, from Elderslie, mixed three bogeys and five birdies on his way to a 2-under-par round of 69 to reach the match play stage for the first time on his fourth appearance in The Amateur Championship.
Among the other qualifiers were the Lytham Trophy winner Alfie Plant on 2-over-par and 2015 Scottish Amateur Champion Robert MacIntrye, who finished on level par. Australia’s Cameron Davis, who was joint runner-up in the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in October, was on the same mark, two shots ahead of his compatriot Travis Smyth, who was the runner-up to Syme in the Australian Amateur Championship.

Grant Forrest, pictured right, beaten finalist in last year’s Amateur Championship, qualified on the 2-over-par mark along with his Walker Cup team mates Ewen Ferguson, on the same score, and Jack Hume, on 4-over-par.
Key quotes:
Connor Syme
“The goal at the start of the week is to try and make the top 64 and the further up the leaderboard you go is a bonus. I felt really comfortable in what I was doing today – a bogey-free round, which was nice in tough conditions so I’m delighted.
“I holed the par putts when I needed to. I didn’t really have any testy putts for par. I chipped it really well. I’m really delighted – bogey free is a bonus. I was trying to qualify for tomorrow.”
Alasdair McDougall
“I kept the ball in play today especially with it being windy. I think that was the key today. I had a good birdie at four and five, which got momentum going.

“The Amateur is the highlight of the year, it’s the biggest tournament, everyone prepares for it and it brings people from all over the world. I’ve played this the last few years (since 2013) and not made the cut – so it’s good to be in there safe and enjoy the rest of the afternoon.”

Antoine Rozner

“Today was really hard. It was a battle from the very beginning and I knew it was going to be like this. I knew no matter what happened I would have to stay calm, because obviously my run from yesterday helped me to stay on top of the leaderboard. I got that eagle on the 9th that really helped me stay with a decent round. And then it was just a battle – I don’t even think I hit bad shots – it was just tough.”

Harry Hall
“I just stayed patient today. After yesterday, I felt really good going into the round. Being in the states the last few months I haven’t really had to use the tool I’ve needed the last few days but just growing up on the links I kind of still had it and it was nice to play in the wind, keep the ball low and stay sensible.
“It gives me a lot of confidence. I think patience is important for qualifying, and especially at the top, you can’t afford to be too relaxed and waste your shots. But I was smart and I was under control.

Drumpellier pair win Lombard Trophy trip

to Algarve with net 62 at Cawder

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Drumpellier Golf Club professional Ian Taylor and amateur member Hugh McIntyre earned themselves a trip to the Algarve in September by coming top of a field of 18 club pairings at the Lombard Trophy first Scottish qualifier at Cawder Golf Club today.
Taylor and McIntyre teamed up for a better-ball net score of eight-under-par 62, thanks to an eagle 2 at the par-4 third and birdies at the first, second, long seventh, ninth, 10th, 11th and 12th. Their only better-ball bogey came at the 18th in halves of 29 (six under) and 33 (two under).
Taylor's financial reward on the day was £450 and amateur McIntyre received a handsome prize.
But the major prizes, for both professionals and amateurs, will be contested at the two-day Grand Final, hosted by Vila Sol Golf Club, on September 22 and 23.
The total prize fund for the pros there will amount to £41,450 with the winner collecting £12,000.
Today's competition at Cawder was the first of 14 regional finals nationwide. The second Scottish qualifier will be staged at Crieff Golf Club on Thursday.

Three teams tied for third place on 64 with the pros in each pairing earning £275 - Cardross (Robert Farrell and Lee Gibson) 30-34, Gourock (Derek Watters and Gordon McKillop) 32-32, and West Linton (Gareth Wright and Malcolm Ilgunas) 31-33.

Local hero Darren Howie wins Stephen

Gallacher Foundation Trophy at Cardrona

NEWS RELEASE
Local lad Darren Howie, last year's runner-up, went one better as he won the Stephen Gallacher Foundation Trophy at Macdonald Cardrona, near Peebles.
The 16-year-old took a commanding seven-shot lead into the final round after opening with scores of 68 and 67 to sit on nine-under-par.
That advantage was down to just one shot with two holes to play as Rory Franssen from Inverness turned up the heat at the Borders venue.
But Howie, a member at the host club as well as Peebles, made a timely birdie at the 17th before finishing with a solid par.
A closing 75 for 210 total gave him a two-shot victory over Franssen (68) with Old Ranfurly's Jamie Stewart (69) and Banchory's Sam Locke (72) both finishing on 214.
"That was an exhausting round," admitted a relieved Howie, last year's Scottish schoolboys' champion, afterwards.
"Having a seven-shot lead was strange as it actually seemed to make me think I was in a match-play situation with Sam and Rory rather than going out and shooting a score."
Sandy Scott, the player Howie finished runner-up to 12 months ago, has just been picked to represent Scotland in next month's European Men's Team Championship in France.
"I was only one back with two holes to go last year but bogeyed 17th and Sandy birdied it," he recalled.
"What Sandy has gone on to achieve since then has been a joke and hopefully this win will give me a lift, too."
Watched by dad Paul, Michael Lawrie finished joint-sixth on 218 after closing with a two-under 70.

The Dunvegan Hotel, St Andrews for sale at £3million

A Slice of Scottish Golfing Heritage

June 14th, 2016

I know that  Golf Business News (GBN.com) readers are interested in Scottish Golfing Heritage, especially when a famous public house is involved.
Earlier this year our story about the closure of Mrs Forman’s Bar and  Kitchen in Musselburgh was one of the most-read that we have ever published!

I therefore make no apology for leading this week with the news about The Dunvegan Hotel in St Andrews.
Don’t panic – it’s not going to close. It’s in the news because Jack and Sheena Willoughby, after 22 years of ownership, have decided to retire. The asking price is just under £3 million and I’m sure that there will be no shortage of potential buyers.
Cheers, Jack and Sheena and thank you for your hospitality!

Geoff Russell, Publisher

*The Dunvegan Hotel, only 112yd from the Old Course, can comfortably sleep 16 golfers, but you don't have to stay there to enjoy the great golfing atmosphere that is automatic when visiting the premises. As one major golf publication writes; "The Dunvegan is truly a golf lover's delight, and when you visit the famous Golfer's Corner lounge bar, suddenly you are eating and drinking with the ghosts of former Open champions. What could be better!
