European Tour's Nordea Masters in Sweden

Fitzpatrick goes clear but Henry still in mix

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Matthew Fitzpatrick fired the low round of the week so far to move into the midway lead at the Nordea Masters at Bro Hof Slott Golf Club, Sweden.
The Englishman has enjoyed a consistent season so far but has secured just one top ten,  at the Masters Tournament in April ,as he looks to follow up his stunning rookie campaign in 2015.
That brought a win and nine further top tens but victory at the British Masters supported by Sky Sports and seven of those finishes came in the second half of the season, and Fitzpatrick is now hoping to kick-on again.

His blemish-free effort on Friday got him to 11 under and handed him a three-shot lead over local favourite Alexander Björk, Belgium's Nicolas Colsaerts, fellow Englishmen Ross Fisher and Andrew Johnston and Scotland's Scott Henry.
"Any time you shoot seven birdies it's always a good day, and when you manage to keep the bogeys off the card at the same time, it's an even better day," he said.
"I hit one or two poor shots but you're always going to do that. I putted really well today, I holed virtually everything so it was just one of those days.
"Any time you go into the weekend high on the leaderboard, you're going to get excited."
Fitzpatrick started a shot behind the overnight leaders but moved ahead thanks to gains on the tenth, 12th, 15th 18th and first.
A brilliant tee-shot to eight feet on the fourth led to another birdie and when the 21 year old spun his ball from the back of the green to within tap-in distance for another gain on the seventh, he was in control.
Big-hitting Colsaerts sandwiched an eagle on the first with birdies on the 12th, 15th, third and fifth as he flew up the leaderboard. A bounce-back birdie on the ninth then followed a bogey on the eighth as he signed for a 66.

Johnston had started the day in a share of the lead after an opening 67 but a triple-bogey on the tenth moved him back to square one for the day after turning in 33.
A big finish was to come, though, with three birdies in his last four holes moving the in-form 27 year old into a share of second alongside Fisher, who had an eagle and three birdies in his 68.
Thunderstorms in the area led to 58 minutes being lost late in the day but that did not affect Henry, who was in the penultimate group out from the tenth but finished with a birdie to add to six further gains, two bogeys and a double.
It was past 8.30pm local time when Björk walked off but he could be very happy with his work in just his second European Tour event, recording five birdies to a single bogey.
French rookie Thomas Linard was then at seven under, a shot clear of two-time champion Mikko Ilonen, German Florian Fritsch, South Africa's Jean Hugo and English debutant Matt Wallace.

Latham reclaims England's senior

crown with wire-to-wire victory

Lincolnshire’s Richard Latham completed a wire-to-wire victory in the English senior men’s championship at Kirby Muxloe, Leicestershire – beating the field by a hefty five shots.
It’s the second time Latham (Image © Leaderboard Photography) has won the title and he commented: “It feels terrific, I am delighted.”
He claimed his crown after a final round which had everything: a first tee wobble, a dramatic charge from a rival, birdies galore - and dogged determination from the new champion.
At the end of it Latham, the general manager at Woodhall Spa, was level par for the championship, returning four-over 75 in the final round.
The runner-up was David Niven (Newbury and Crookham), who set the final round alight with three birdies in his first five holes.
Latham made a meteoric start to his senior career in 2013, but came to Kirby with a point to prove, after losing his England senior team place last year. “I have come out and proved I can still play, which is what I wanted to do. I was desperately keen to prove that to myself,” he said.
He made his intentions clear with a superb first round of four-under 67, followed up with level par 71 at Rothley Park – the championship’s co-host – and at the start of the final round he held a seven shot lead over Niven, Chris Reynolds (Littlestone) and Andrew Stracey (Denham).
But, such a big lead can be as much a challenge as a comfort and Latham was edgy on the first tee and ended up topping his opening drive.
“It was probably the worst shot I have hit in my entire 40-year competitive career, but I did make a good bogey!” he said afterwards.
A couple of unlucky breaks later and Latham was three over after four. Meanwhile Niven, a senior international, was charging – and the gap was narrowing.
Latham showed his mettle with birdies on five and six, where he struck his shot of the championship. In the first round he had opted to lay up short of the water hazard in front of the green, but this time he went for it, arrowed his shot straight at the pin and holed the 10-footer.
“I thought I’d better get a move on!” he said.
Both players also birdied the eighth, but after that Niven’s charge stalled and Latham was able to extend his lead once more. He got back under par for the championship with a birdie on the long 17th where he played a superb approach to about 6ft, but the short 18th cost him a shot after he bunkered his tee shot.
By then, though, it didn’t matter. He’d avoided paying attention to his rivals’ play but he did know he had a very comfortable cushion as he played the last.
He paid tribute to his wife Lisa, for her support, and to his coach, David Ridley.
“My coach told me ‘play for yourself, concentrate on what you are doing’ and that’s such sound advice. I gave very little thought to anyone else and concentrated on me.”
The spectators, however, were well aware of the scoring as Latham and Niven – playing in separate groups - collected eight birdies between them.
Elsewhere there was good play from Paul Plant who scored a final round 73, composed of 16 pars and two bogeys, which moved him into a tie for third place with David Nelson (Northenden). Fifth place was shared by Andrew Stracey and Keith Young (Ashridge).

Graham Bell wins East of Scotland Seniors

Open for a fourth time at Edzell

By GORDON THOMSON

Graham Bell (Downfield) added a fine score of 70 to yesterday’s 73 for an aggregate of one-over-par 143 to win the East of Scotland Seniors Open (sponsored by McCrea Financial Services) by two shots at Edzell's par-71 lay-out today.

Ian Brotherston (Dumfries and  County) signalled a return to form as he added a 70 for an aggregate of 145 for a second place tie with Ronnie Clark (Erskine), who spoiled good outward halves on each day with dropped shots on the back nine.

John Fraser (Royal Burgess), Norman Dyce (Strathmore) and Nick Robson (Meldrum House) tied for fourth place on 147 with Keith Reilly (Silverknowes) in seventh place on 148 just a shot ahead of Duncan Hamilton (Mortonhall).
Graham has a particular liking for this event which he has now won four times. As one of the joint overnight leaders he played solidly again today, securing birdies at the 9th and 15th holes to offset a dropped shot at the 4th hole.

Edzell proved to be an excellent test and justified its reputation as one of the finest inland courses in Scotland. With less wind than yesterday scoring conditions were slightly easier today and the CSS was 73 for the par 71 course.
