Jordan Spieth dazzled with
his short game in a final round of 65 to win the Colonial by three
strokes in Fort Worth, Texas on Sunday.
The American posted his eighth victory on the PGA Tour and
his first in his home state, in the process passing a Tiger Woods mark
and achieved his triumph wrapping up with three birdies. His back
nine included six birdies and came in the third tournament since the
world No 2 blew a five-stroke lead on the final nine holes last month
when trying to win the Masters for the second year in a row.
He will try to defend his US Open title in three weeks. Only Horton Smith (14) won more tour events by the age of 22 or younger. Woods won seven by the same age. Spieth
reached the mark in emphatic fashion with a closing 65 to finish at
17-under-par 263 at Colonial Country Club, keeping ahead of Harris
English. Ryan Palmer and Webb Simpson were one shot further back on a day when scoring was good. Spieth told Sky Sports 4:
"It means a lot, the crowds were fantastic for me, for Palmer - and for
Webb, but Ryan being a member here had all his buddies out so people
were really rooting for both players.
"That
(birdie at 16) was cool, everybody in the crowd standing up
and cheering. I was really lucky on 17, being able to drop out and it
landed in a matted area where I could get the club on the ball. "Eighteen, just get it down there, another bonus. It was pretty cool." Spieth
curled in a 20-foot birdie putt at the 16th hole and there was no way
back for English after the Texan, having had a free drop from in front
of the grandstand at 17, chipped in for a remarkable birdie to move
two clear playing the last. English finished with a par for a 66, allowing the leader the leeway to make bogey at the last hole. With
his storming finish and his nearest opponents blown away, victory was
assured in the final three holes and he had one more firework up his
sleeve with a 35-foot birdie putt at the final hole.
Rocco Mediate shot a final round five-under par 66 to secure victory in the United States Senior PGA Championship at Harbor Shores on Sunday.
The 53 year-old American, who had led Colin Montgomerie
heading into the final day, holed a 15-foot putt for par on the final
hole for a three-stroke victory over the Scot. "That was sick,"
Mediate said. "As soon as it left the club, I knew it had a chance.
Obviously, I didn't know it was going to make it, of course not, but I
had a feeling I might.
"That
made a big difference. It made a huge difference. Because Monty was
there for three. At least three. And if I make bogey there, and it goes
to one shot going to the last hole, who knows what happens? Who knows?
So it was very fortunate at that time."
Mediate finished 19-under 265 to break the previous tournament record of 268, set by Sam Snead in 1978. Sunday's victory is the American's third on the senior tour, with his two previous victories coming in 2013. "I
didn't know I shot 66," Mediate added. "I didn't know what the heck I
shot today. ... A lot of great things happened today and I don't believe
I'm sitting here. I really don't." Montgomerie shot a final round of 67 to match Snead for the second-best total in the tournament's history.
Meanwhile,
two-time Masters champion Bernhard Langer failed in his bid to become
the first player to win all five US PGA Tour Champions majors and
eventually tied for third at 13-under with American Brandt Jobe. FINAL TOTALS AND PRIZEMONEY Par 284 (4x71) Yardage 6,852
