GULLANE REPORT FROM SCOTTISHGOLF
A superb amateur course record 63 in this morning’s third round helped young Australian Cameron John to a stunning four-shot victory in the Carrick Neill Scottish Open Stroke Play Championship at Gullane.
Playing in beautiful conditions which were more akin to his homeland than the East Lothian coastline, the 17-year-old from Melbourne held off a strong Scottish challenge from Grant Forrest and Craig Howie and fast finishing Irishman Stuart Grehan to take the biggest title of his career, finishing with a final round 68 to post a 15-under par aggregate of 269.
John, the reigning Victorian Amateur champion, made his move this morning with a flawless eight-birdie haul to move into a two-shot lead ahead of overnight leader Forrest going into the final round, and held his nerve despite late bogeys on 14 and 15.
Playing links golf for the very first time this week, his knock-down approach shot from 97 yards to set up a birdie from two feet at the last, was played in his words, “like a true Scotsman”, to round off the championship in some style, which shades of Rickie Fowler’s final hole birdie in the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open at Gullane nearly a year ago.
The Australian was vying for the lead with Forrest (Craigielaw) for much of the final day, and with the East Lothian man getting off to a flying start in the afternoon with birdies on each of the first four holes, it looked like the local support was in for a thrilling finish. But a costly double-bogey from a loose tee shot on the 7th hole damaged Forrest’s chances, as he eventually had to settle for a share of second place with Ireland’s Grehan, who produced an excellent final round 66.
Peebles’ Craig Howie, second in the Welsh Stroke Play last week, put himself into contention with a third-round 65, matched by Drumoig’s Connor Syme as a clutch of Scots battled to become the first home player to take the title since Wallace Booth eight years ago.
Howie couldn’t quite keep up his morning momentum, posting a two-under 69 in the final round to clinch fourth place on 10-under, one clear of Syme, while joint overnight leader Sandy Scott (Nairn) signed off with a one-over 72 to share sixth place with English duo George Bloor and Adam Chapman.
“I’m certainly pretty happy with that performance. It was a lot of fun out there and easy to relax given I was playing with my club-mate Zach (Murray) so it felt like a normal day’s golf,” said the new champion, who had made the trip to Scotland with several of his Golf Australia colleagues.
“I won the Victorian Amateur and the Argentinian Amateur Championship in November, but this is my first time playing golf in the UK and the biggest event I have won.
“Royal Melbourne is the only course back home which is like playing links, but I’ve loved the experience and it sets me up well for the next few weeks over here. Gullane is one of the best courses I have played and having watched the Tour pros play the Scottish Open last year on TV, its great to have come here and won.”

“Golf Australia’s support has been fantastic in giving us the opportunity to come over here and play and I’m looking forward to getting up to St Andrews to play the Links Trophy next week,” he added.
Forrest, who heads to The Home of Golf next week looking to win the St Andrews Links Trophy for the second time in three years, took the positives from his performance

“I got off to a great start this afternoon with four birdies but the double-bogey on seven really knocked my chances. I finished nicely however and I’m hitting my irons as good as I ever have, so I’m really happy with my game. A win would have been great but I just need to make a few less bogeys, and I’m feeling confident going into the next few weeks with some big events coming up.”

Greig Hutcheon's week among the big boys ends with an 82

Chris Wood wins BMW PGA title on

dramatic last day at Wentworth

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Chris Wood came through an attritional final day to claim the biggest win of his career at the BMW PGA Championship today.
The 28 year old Englishman stormed into the lead by matching Danny Willett’s tournament-record front-nine 29 from Friday, and at that stage led by four from clubhouse leader Rikard Karlberg, who had burst through the field with a sensational 65 to reach eight under par at Wentworth Club.

A wayward tee shot on the tenth saw Wood drop his first shot of the day, and although he bounced back with a birdie on the 11th after his approach spun back to a couple of feet, he was loose off the tee again at the 12th and registered three bogeys in four holes from the 14th.

That left him just one ahead of Swede Karlberg on the 18th tee, but Wood completed a par five with relative ease to card a closing 69 and nine under par total.

Speaking after his securing his third European Tour title, a relieved Wood said: "It's huge, because my friends and family are here. It's amazing. To win in front of them was unreal.

"It's hard to win, as I've proved. I did not look at a leaderboard all day but when you are making lots of birdies on a tricky day you know you are there or thereabouts.
"On the 18th I had 196 yards to the front and I immediately thought six iron, but my caddie said 'Do you want to know the situation?'
"I said I'll put it in your hands and he said I'd like you to lay up. It seems silly hitting sand wedge, sand wedge into 18 but as soon as he told me to lay up, I knew probably five was enough. I can rest easy now and enjoy it now."
Karlberg finished second after an exceptional round that featured an ace on the second, while Masters Tournament champion Willett, who had been 12 under for the week through 27 holes, shot a closing 71 to finish third on seven under.
In testing conditions, plenty of players found themselves contesting the title only to fall away.
Overnight leader Scott Hend double bogeyed the opening hole and went to the turn in 41

German Martin Kaymer eagled the fourth to get into contention only to slip out of the frame after a double bogey two holes later following a poor drive, and Tyrrell Hatton, who was one behind overnight and playing with Hend in the final group, dropped three shots in as many holes around the turn.

Sandy Scott a creditable T6 behind 17-year-old

Aussie winner Cameron John at Gullane

 By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Nairn teenager Sandy Scott finished a creditable tied sixth in the Scottish open amateur stroke play golf championship, sponsored by Carrick Neill, at Gullane Golf Club over the weekend.
Scott shot rounds of 69, 66, 69 and 72 for an eight-under-par total of 276.
Jeff Wright (Forres) failed to survive the halfway cut.
Cameron John, a 17-year-old who arrived in Britain last week as a member of a 14-strong Australian squad, won the title with rounds of 71, 67, 63 and 68 for 15-under-par 269.

That brilliant third round of 63 was the score that separated the "boy" from the men.
Cameron, pictured right by Joyce Hunnam, who sounds as though he has some Scottish blood in his veins, won by four strokes from Irishman Stuart Grehan and Craigielaw's Grant Forrest with Craig Howie fourth and Connor Syme fifth on 274 and 275 respectively.
The bad news for Grant Forrest and Co is that Master John from Down Under will be testing them again in the St Andrews Links Trophy 72-holer next weekend.

Graham Fox wins Bishopbriggs pro-am with

record 63 after 64s by Hay, Forsyth

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
It was a "record day" at the Bishopbriggs Golf Club pro-am today!
First Gavin Hay (Grantown on Spey) posted a new course record of seven-under-par 64 with the help of eight birdies and one bogey and was joined very shortly in the lead by Alastair Forysth (Mearns Castle) who had a bogey-free, seven-birdie 64.
But before the paint was dry on the new record mark, in came man in form Graham Fox (Clydeway Golf), beaten in a play-off for the P and H Championship last week, lowered the record again ... to eight-under 63.
Fox, who earned £1,416 for his great round, had bogey-free halves of 32 and 31 with the birdies coming in sequences - sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, 10th  and at the end of the round birdies at the 16th, 17th and 18th.
Hay and Forsyth pocketed £991 each.
Last year's Scottish professional champion Chris Kelly (unattached) led the amateur team of Thomas Murray (handicap 12), Vince Echline (20) and Gavin Cunningham (11) to victory in the pro-am team competition with a 17-under-par net score of 54.

Jordan Spieth in command at Dean and Deluca Invitational

Jordan Spieth recovers from the sand on the eighth
Jordan Spieth recovers from the sand on the eighth

Jordan Spieth carded a 5-under 65 that even included a few wayward shots to take the third-round lead on Saturday at Colonial.
The second-ranked American was alone in the lead at the Dean and Deluca Invitational after three birdies and a huge par save in a four-hole stretch in the middle of his round.
At 12-under 198, he was one stroke ahead of Colonial member Ryan Palmer and Webb Simpson.

Palmer overcame consecutive bogeys early to shoot 66. Simpson ended with a 67 after his 3-foot par putt at the 18th hole for a share of the lead lipped out of the cup.
None of Spieth's seven PGA Tour victories have come in his home state of Texas.
Spieth hit only three of 14 fairways and 11 of 18 greens in regulation, but he hung in there with his only bogey on the last hole.
