Perrier's record-equalling 62 puts him in pole

position at Czech Challenge

FROM THE CHALLENGE TOUR WEBSITE
Damien Perrier equalled the course record of 62, set by Brooks Koepka in 2013, at Golf and Spa Kunetická Hora to move into position for a maiden European Challenge Tour title at the D+D REAL Czech Challenge.
The Frenchman carded 11 birdies and one bogey en route to a ten under par round which elevated him to a 20 under total, one shot clear of Englishman Jordan L Smith - who is chasing a second victory of the season.
Perrier, whose best Challenge Tour result to date in 61 appearances is a tied ninth finish back in 2010, followed current World Number 16 from the USA, Koepka, into the history books at the Czech venue with a round which set fire courtesy of three successive birdies from the second and finished with three birdies in the final three holes.
The 26 year old was delighted to be in such esteemed company and called it the best round of his career.
“It’s such a good feeling,” said the former British Boys Amateur Champion from Brittany. “It’s not every day you play this kind of golf, so I’m really happy with the round and to tie the course record with Koepka.
“I played really solid but it’s really weird - since the beginning of the year I have felt like I’m playing well but I’m just finishing 30th or 40th.

“I had my best score of the season yesterday with a seven under round. Then I was talking to Marina, my girlfriend and caddie, saying, ‘I can go lower than this’, because I had a lot of opportunities between eight and ten feet. I kept playing with that same strategy today and it’s just a great feeling to make 11 birdies.
Having shone in the amateur scene and played in teams alongside the likes of Victor Dubuisson and Romain Wattel, Perrier believes it is high time he began to make bigger strides in his professional career.
“I turned professional eight years ago and I’ve only had two seasons so far on the Challenge Tour,” he said. “I have always played well and put myself into contention on the smaller tours – I’ve graduated twice from the Alps Tour.
“At 26 years of age, turning 27 soon, I want to start doing that on this tour. This is the next step for me in my career and I am still waiting for it to happen, so I’m happy about these three rounds.
“I have put some pressure on myself because I really want it, and I see my friends like Romain Langasque, Clément Sordet and Matthieu Pavon doing well, so I want to follow them but finally I am not so far away from where they are.
“I’m a little bit older than those guys though. My generation is more Dubuisson and Wattel and I played in boys’ teams with those guys, who have been on the European Tour for many years and winning there, so it’s time for me to go.
“It’s time to get results like the guys are doing this year, not just feeling like you’re not far away but not at the top. It’s an important round and a good score for three days.”
Smith, winner of the inaugural Red Sea Egyptian Challenge Presented by Hassan Allam Properties last month, is happy to once again be in contention following a five under par 67 which earned him outright second place.
“I didn’t hit it quite as well as I did in the first few days,” said the 23 year old. “On the front nine I played really nicely and then on ten, 11 and 12 I had three putts inside 12 feet which were makeable, but I missed all of them.

BMW PGA Championship third round report

Eagle finish gives Aussie Hend  Wentworth lead

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Aussie Scott Hend eagled the final hole at Wentworth Club to snatch the outright lead at the end of a thrilling BMW PGA Championship third round today. Hend and Masters Tournament winner Danny Willett struggled for much of the day in the final pairing which  blew the tournament wide open, and England’s Tyrrell Hatton looked set to hold the lead going into the final day when his brilliant 66 took him to eight under par.
But Hend fired an eight iron to within five feet of the par-five 18th and duly converted the putt for a round of 73 that left him one clear on nine under.

Hatton was one ahead of compatriot Lee Westwood, who carded a flawless 68, and South Korean Y E Yang, with Willett part of a six-strong group a shot further back which also includes two-time Major winner Martin Kaymer.

Two-time European Tour winner Hend’s only deviation from par over the first ten holes came with a bogey at the seventh, but after a good approach led to a birdie on the 11th he paid the price for some wayward drives on the back nine with dropped shots at the 13th, 14th, and 15th – the latter the result of a missed five footer.
His luck turned at the penultimate hole, when a miscued approach bounced off rather than into a bush, and he was able to move to the top of a congested leaderboard with three faultless shots at the last.
“It was very fortunate - I was just trying to get it anywhere on the green there and two-putt for a birdie," the 43 year old said of his efforts on the 18th.
Asked what it would mean to win such a prestigious event, Hend added: “I’m not really thinking that far ahead right now – I’m just thinking about what I’m going to have tonight to be honest.
“I’ll just go about my work tomorrow and try and get the ball a bit more off the centre of the club , a bit more consistency in the swing and what will be, will be.”
Hend, Willett and Y E Yang shared the halfway lead at Wentworth but were a combined 11 over par on day three.
Willett, who also shared the 36-hole lead in the Irish Open last week but struggled to a 74 and eventually finished 23rd, enjoyed a two-shot lead after a birdie on the fifth, but played his last ten holes in five over par to card a disappointing 76.
Greig Hutcheon is tied 21st after his best round so far - a 70 for 214, seven shots off the lead.

Bathgate pro-am with a four-under 67

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Christopher McMaster (Wellsgreen Driving Range, Leven) beat off a lot of Tartan Tour big names to win today's Bathgate Golf Club pro-am with a three-under-par 67 on a great day sunshine for golf.
McMaster birdied the long first, seventh, ninth, long 12th and short 13th in halves of 34 and 33 with only one bogey, at the short eighth, to land the £1,242 first prize, the biggest so far in his pro golf career.
He won by one shot from four players on the 68 mark, Alastair Forsyth (Mearns Castle), winner at Cardross last Thursday, Graeme Brown (Montrose Links), winner at West Lothian on Friday, Robert Arnott (Bishopbriggs), recent winner of the Senior PGA championship, and the consistent Christopher Currie (Caldwell).
They each earned £685.
Jonathan Lomas (Ayr Caprington) led the R J Fixings amateur trio of John Mallon (handicap 12), Ross Mallon (2) and Gary Corrigan (scratch) to victory in the pro-am team event with a net score of 14-under-par 57.

Zika Virus: Health experts push for Olympics to be delayed or moved from Rio

Health experts from around the globe are urging the United Nation’s World Health Organization to either delay or move the 2016 Olympics Games in Rio de Janeiro.
More than 100 doctors, scientists and researchers signed an open letter that states its not only dangerous, but unethical to hold the summer games as scheduled due to threats associated with the Zika virus.
“The Brazilian strain of Zika virus harms health in ways that science has not observed before,” the letter states. “An unnecessary risk is posed when 500,000 foreign tourists from all countries attend the Games, potentially acquire that strain, and return home to places where it can become endemic. Should that happen to poor, as-yet unaffected places (e.g., most of South Asia and Africa) the suffering can be great. It is unethical to run the risk, just for Games that could proceed anyway, if postponed and/or moved.”
The letter writers note that despite Rio’s new mosquito-killing program, the transmission of the mosquito-borne disease has increased rather than decreased. Rio’s health system is so weakened, they say, that a last-minute push against Zika isn’t possible.
“While the virus is the infectious agent of Zika, its real cause is Rio’s poor social conditions and sanitation—factors that lack a quick fix, and that are not helped when shrinking health resources are diverted to the Games,” the letter states.
The experts also expressed concerns that the WHO has rejected alternatives to the Rio games because the organization is in an official partnership with the International Olympic Committee, and therefore has a conflict of interest.
The Zika virus is spread by mosquitoes and by sexual intercourse. It has caused more than 1,000 confirmed cases of the birth defect microcephaly (in which babies are born with unusually small heads and brains) and appears to be linked to neurological and autoimmune disorders like the paralyzing Guillain-Barre syndrome, according to a recent cover story in Time Magazine.
Victoria Lovelady, a Brazilian-born golfer who competes on the Ladies European Tour, travels back to Brazil frequently to visit family and work on her game. Lovelady said in a recent interview with Golfweek that she is “super cautious” when she returns to Brazil, putting on repellant three times a day. The golf courses, she said, are full of mosquitoes.
I have friends that are pregnant now and they are leaving the country to be pregnant,” Lovelady said. One friend she recently met up with was covered in stocking and long sleeves, doing everything she could to make sure she didn’t get bit.
That being said, Lovelady has every intent to compete in the games should she qualify. As host country, Brazil is guaranteed at least one participant in the 60-player field.
The CDC states that men with symptoms of Zika are at risk of passing along the virus to sexual partners for at least six months after symptoms begin.
LPGA player Brittany Lincicome said in March that she and her husband have discussed him staying home during the Aug. 17-20 women’s golf competition, should she qualify, so they’d cut their chances of contracting the virus in half.

Scottish men's open amateur stroke play at Gullane

Scott and Forrest share halfway lead on 135

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Nairn's rising star Sandy Scott and Walker Cup player Grant Forrest (Craigielaw)  share the lead on seven-under-par 135 at the halfway stage  of the Scottish men's open amateur stroke-play championship, sponsored by Carrick Neill,  at Gullane Golf Club, East Lothian.
Scott has had rounds of 69 and 66, Forrest 66 and 69.
First-round leader Forrest, Scottish amateur match-play champion in 2012, birdied the first, seventh, 12th, 13th and 15th and would have retained the lead on is own but for a bogey at the 18th in halves of 34-35.
Grant had earlier bogeys at the fifth and 10th.
Teenager Scott birdied the second, third, sixth, seven and 17th, highlighting his card with an eagle 3 at the par-5 12th in halves of 32 and 34. He dropped shots at the short fourth,10th and 15th.
The two Scots are one shot ahead of Travis Smyth (70-66 for 136), one of an army of Australians who are playing in all the big amateur tournaments in Scotland, England and Wales over the next few weeks.
Backing up Forrest and Scott in the top 20 are James Wilson (Balmore) in joint 4th place on 137 (71-66) and last year's Scottish amateur champion, left-hander Robert MacIntyre (Glencruitten), tied 13th on 139 (69-70).
Another past Scottish title-holder, Barry Hume (Haggs Castle), winner of the Welsh open amateur stroke-play title at Harlech last weekend, is tied 23rd on 141 with steady rounds of 71 and 70.

Monty is T3, five behind as Rocco Mediate sets

Senior PGA Championship record low of 128

BENTON HARBOR, Michigan — When the 77th US Senior PGA Championship has been completed, there will be a massive overhaul of the record books.
Rocco Mediate shot a 5-under-par 66 at Harbor Shores in the second round on Friday for a two-day total of 14-under-par 128, and in the process has erased by four strokes the championship record of the lowest opening 36 holes that had been shared by three Hall of Famers: Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus.
Mediate, who has played his first 36 holes without a bogey, has a four-stroke lead over the rejuvenated Gene Sauers, who made three consecutive birdies late in his round en route to a 2-under 69.
There are some notable names in pursuit of the leaders.
Bernhard Langer, trying to become the first player to win all five senior majors, shot a 7-under-64 to climb into a share of third place with two-time defending champion Colin Montgomerie, who had 66 for 133 and is tied third, five behind the leader.
2010 winner Tom Lehman is part of a group of six players at 8-under-par 134, tied for sixth but six strokes back.
And the day’s most astounding scorecard belonged to a player further down in the pack. Kenny Perry shot an even-par 71 that was anything but uneventful. He stumbled to three double bogeys over his opening nine holes, but his incoming nine included a double eagle at the par-5, 566-yard fifth hole. Perry made the 2 when he holed a 5-iron from 227 yards.
The shootout that has transpired over the first two days also has posted the Senior PGA’s lowest 36-hole cut of even par, slashing the previous record of 4 over.
“It’s going to be fun to be back in a cool position and see what I do,” said Mediate. “I had some moments out there where it went a little south, but I covered up with the short game today. I made some ridiculously good putts to save (pars) and I made a bunch of birdies again.
“I haven’t been here in a long time. I’m looking forward to trying to drive it in the first fairway and see what happens from there. That’s all you can really do.”
Three weeks ago, the 53-year-old Sauers changed to a cross-handed putting style and has seen instant improvement. He’s had his two best tournaments since the change, finishing T-12 at both the Insperity Championship in Houston and the Regions Tradition in Birmingham, Ala., and now he’s filled with confidence.
Three of his birdies on Friday were of the easy variety: a two-putt at the par-5 fifth, followed by a tap-in at No. 6 when his 6-iron approach stopped two rolls short of the cup, and a 4-foot putt at the seventh.
“Ever since I went left hand low three weeks ago, I’ve been putting a lot better,” said Sauers, “so I’m going to be right up here now with ’em.
“What made me change? Because I was putting awful. Yeah, I wish I would have changed 10, 20 years ago.”
With the Regions Tradition win he secured last week, Langer has collected four of the five major titles in senior golf. Only the Senior PGA Championship is missing, though he’s been a frequent contender there with four top-10 finishes in seven starts. No player has won all five parts of a career senior Grand Slam.
“I was told last week that nobody’s ever done it before,” Langer said. “I didn’t even know that. It’s always special if you can do something that no one has done. To even think that guys like Nicklaus or Irwin or Watson, I mean, there’s there’s so many legends and great names that have played this tour, that nobody’s ever won all five majors is pretty amazing.
“It would be (special) because the clock is ticking. I’m going to be 59 soon, so the longer I wait, the harder it’s going to get.”
Langer thought his second-round 64 was good in just about every respect.
“I made more putts today and I hit my irons a little closer,” he said. “It’s a little easier to make a 10-foot putt than a 20-foot putt. We all know that.”
Brandt Jobe, playing in his first full season as a senior, had sole possession of the lead at 10 under par until the par-4 18th, where he blocked his tee shot into a hazard right of the fairway on his way to making a double bogey. It was his second double of the day, which put a damper on an eventful round that included birdies at half his holes.
“I’m happy with how I played,” said Jobe. “But every time I tried to get aggressive, I made a mistake. So I think it’s hit it in the right area, give yourself an opportunity and move on. And be a little more patient. I was trying to go and I got caught going.”
Kirk Triplett, also in the group at 8 under, won in each of his first three full years as a senior but did not taste victory in 2015. There wasn’t much to get excited about in his first few months of 2016, but since a T-66 showing at the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic in April, he’s improved in each of his next three starts, including a T-3 at the Regions Tradition last week.
“It’s just a little bit of everything,” said Triplett, “striking the ball better, making a few more putter, a better frame of mind. It all kind of goes together.”
Triplett has hit every fairway over the first two days at Harbor Shores, but on Friday he missed six greens and got up and down only twice.
“Today I had a couple of hiccups,” he said. “The greens are still receptive, though, and scores are still good. I don’t know what the weather’s going to do. I certaily don’t think 8 under is going to win the golf tournament. So you’ve got to go out there and make some birdies.”
John Daly’s first visit to the Senior PGA was a short one because he couldn’t figure out a way to play the dogleg-left, par-4 16th. After making a 9 there on Thursday, he had a one-putt 6 at the 16th in Round 2 en route to a 3-over-par 74 and a two-day total of 7-over-par 149.
Perry’s double eagle was the first on the PGA Tour Champions since last year’s U.S. Senior Open.
“I hit the prettiest 5-iron,” said Perry. “That’s the first one I ever made. It was pretty neat. I couldn’t see it go in, but when I saw the crowd jump up and down, I knew it went in.”
