Hutch beats PGA cut at Wentworth for a third time

2705Bmwhutcheon
FROM THE PGA WEBSITE
Experience proved invaluable for Greig Hutcheon, pictured above in action today, as he tangled with Wentworth’s testing West Course to secure his place in the final two rounds of the BMW PGA Championship.
The Paul Lawrie Golf Centre Inchmarlo pro has made it to the latter stages of the European Tour’s flagship event on two previous occasions, in 2013 and 2011, and will now look to build on a promising opening two rounds this time.
In truth it could have been so much better. Hutcheon had flirted with the top 20 on a number of occasions throughout the preceding 36 holes before finishing on level par alongside defending champion Byeong-Hun An and three-time European Tour winner Andy Sullivan.
The man himself, who enjoyed the earlier tee time after a late finish on day one, described the course as “exacting” as he reflected on a topsy-turvy second round that featured an eagle at the fourth hole and a double bogey at the 13th
“It was a rollercoaster,” he explained. “If you’re slightly off, it becomes really difficult to make par – it doesn’t even have to be a particularly bad shot.
“Coming down the last, that’s when the experience helps. You’re aware that you don’t want to try anything too fancy.
“I’m delighted that I’ve done enough to make the cut – I’ve got two more chances to shoot a round in the 60s now.
“I said to my caddie before we came out that I felt I could shoot a couple of rounds in the 60s – now I’ve only got two days left to do it twice!”
Before signing for his second day round of one-over, Hutcheon navigated a tricky back nine which had left many of the field floundering.

Forrest on fire with an evening 66 to lead as

fog puts "Scottish" behind schedule

 By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Walker Cup player Grant Forrest (Craigielaw) showed his class late in the evening at Gullane with a five-under-par 66 to dislodge Craig Howie (Peebles), the long time clubhouse leader with a 67, in a fog-disrupted opening day at the Scottish men's open amateur stroke-play championship, sponsored by Carrick Neill.
A 2hr 35min suspension of play due to thick fog meant that the first round  will not be completed until Saturday morning even though play was not halted until darkness fell on the Lothians links which Forrest, the 2012 Scottish amateur champion and a multi-winner on the US college circuit, knows so well.
Forrest had an eagle 3 at the lng 12th and birdies at the first, third, seventh, 10th, short 13th, 15th and short 16th, in halves of 35-31.
Howie made his score with an outward half of 31, birdieing the first, third, fourth, sixth and seventh before bogeying the ninth.
After the turn Howie had a sixth birdie at the 12th but cancelled that out with a bogey at the 14th.
Other  Scots who have started well Jeff Wright (Forres), James A Wilson (Balmore) and Sandy Scott (Nairn), all tied seventh on 69.
Scott bogeyed the first but then rattled off birdies at the second, fourth, ninth, 10th and 12th before a weak finish which saw him bogey the long 15th and the short 16th in halves of 33 and 36.
Scots among the players who will have to return to the course early tomorrow morning to complete their first rounds are Kyle McClung (Wigtownshire), George Burns (Williamwood), Jamie Savage (Cawder), Robert MacIntyre (Glencruitten), Alan Sutherland (Cupar), Sean Burgess (Nairn) and Fraser Davren (Williamwood).

Greig Hutcheon beats cut but Paul Lawrie, Russell Knox just miss out

Willett lets five-stroke lead slip, shares halfway

pole position with Hend and Yang

 FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Masters Tournament champion Danny Willett experienced mixed fortunes as he claimed a share of the lead alongside Scott Hend and Y E Yang with a remarkable 68 on the second day of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club, Surrey.
Following on from a flawless 66 in his first round in England since winning his maiden major title at Augusta, Willett raced to the turn in a tournament-record of 29, thanks to six birdies in seven holes from the third.

At that stage the World Number Nine enjoyed a five-shot lead and was on course to break the 36-hole scoring record of 13 under par, but dropped his first shot of the week on the tenth and also bogeyed the 15th, 16th and 17th to come home in 39.

The 28 year old's ten-under-par total of 134 was later matched by first-round joint leaders Hend and Yang, with South Africa's Jaco van Zyl a shot behind in fourth.

Willett's group was put on the clock for slow play on the back nine and he also had a lucky escape on the 17th when his sunglasses almost fell on his ball in the rough. If they had caused the ball to move, he would have received a one-shot penalty.
"I played great most of the day and then chucked a couple of horrid shots in there," Willett said. "I had a slow walk from 17 to 18 to try and gather my thoughts and after hitting two lovely shots into the last I came off with a slightly better taste in my mouth.
"I could have just chucked it and finished really poorly, but to make birdie on the last was good and shows a little bit of mental strength.
Hend completed his 69 in style with an eagle from 18 feet on the 18th, while Yang - who created history in 2009 as the first man to come from behind to beat Tiger Woods in the final round of a major - carded four birdies, an eagle and three bogeys.
"I'd been struggling all day to get the ball over the centre of the club, get it around as best I can," said Hend, who won his second European Tour title in Thailand in March. "Came up 18, hit a nice little sliding driver down there and sort of chunked a six iron not as good as I'd like to hit it.

"I was in between six and seven and I took a six and caught it a little bit thick. But it was nicely on the green and knew I had a quick putt, so just hit the putt where I thought it could go and rolled all the way.

"It was quite nice and a good result considering I was floundering coming down the last few holes and put a positive spin going into the weekend."

FOG CUTS W LOTHIAN PRO AM TO 15

HOLES,  BROWN WINS WITH A 56 (-4)

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
The fog that forced a 2hr 35min suspension of play in the Scottish men's amateur stroke-play at Gullane also played havoc with the Tartan Tour pro-am at West Lothian Golf Club.
Tournament director Roy Murray explained:
"We had a lengthy delay because of the fog and then decided that the only way we could finish the tournament today was to make it a 15-hole competition by not playing the 16th, 17th and 18th."
Montrose assistant pro Graeme Brown won the £1,166 first prize with a score of 56, four under par for the 15 holes.
He won by one stroke from Paul O'Hara (Clydeway Golf), Paul McKechnie (Braid Hills), Paul Robinson (Largs) and Greg McBain (Newmachar). They all earned £644.
McBain made an extra £140 by leading the Spraystore No 6 team of
Peter Cowan, Alec Grant and Chris McGee, all 11-handicappers, to a score of 15-under 45.

Whiteford's purple patch puts him in Czech

mix but Law misses cut with four-under total

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Peter Whiteford had a brilliant six-under-par run - an eagle 3 at the long seventh and birdies at the 12th, 13th, 16th and 18th - to post a five-under-par 67 for a 36-hole tally of 11-under-par 133 in  a low-scoring Czech Challenge at Dritec in the Czech Republic today.
The Kirkcaldy man had bogeyed the first hole then parred his way to the seven before his round took off big time.
Sharing fifth place, Whiteford is four strokes behind the leader, Frenchman Adrien Saddier who has scored 65-64 for 15-under 129.
Duncan Stewart (Turnhouse) has had a pair of 68s for 136 and a share of 23rd place.
George Murray and Scott Hendry are tied 32nd on 137, Murray scoring 67-70, Henry 68-69.
Jack Doherty made the cut with a shot to spare in T43 position after a pair of 69s for 138.
Aberdonian David Law's disappointing run continues although he was unfortunate to miss out with a four-under-par total of 140. He missed the cut by one shot despite birdieing the third, 17th and 18th in a bogey free 69
Paul Shields (72-73 for 145) and Chris Doak (75-76 for 151)  were the Scottish non-qualifiers.

Lawrie, Harrington, Bjorn named as Ryder

Cup vice-captains by Darren Clarke

Left to right: Paul Lawrie, Padraig Harrington, Darren Clarke and Thomas Bjorn (Getty Images(c)

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Darren Clarke, the European Captain for The 2016 Ryder Cup, has named Denmark’s Thomas Bjørn, Ireland’s Padraig Harrington and Paul Lawrie of Scotland as his first three Vice Captains for the contest against the United States at Hazeltine National Golf Club this September.
As well as all being current players on the European Tour and therefore well known to the 12 players who will line up for Europe in Chaska,  Minnesota from September 30 to October 2, the trio will also bring vital Ryder Cup experience to the European team room having competed in 11 Ryder Cups between them.
Bjørn – the most decorated Danish player in European Tour history and the first Dane to have played in the biennial contest against the Americans – has been on the winning side in all three of his Ryder Cup appearances in 1997, 2002 and 2014; Lawrie – the 1999 Open Champion – was part of the Miracle of Medinah in his second of two appearances in 2012; and Harrington – a three time Major Champion – has helped Europe lift Samuel Ryder’s golden trophy on four of his six appearances in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2010.
For Bjørn and Harrington, it will also be another taste of Vice Captaincy, the Dane having helped Bernhard Langer’s team at Oakland Hills in 2004, Colin Montgomerie’s team at Celtic Manor in 2010 and José Maria Olazábal’s team at Medinah in 2012 all triumph, while Harrington was part of Paul McGinley’s backroom team during Europe’s win at Gleneagles in 2014.
Clarke, who unveiled the trio at a press conference during the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club, said: “I was delighted when Thomas, Padraig and Paul all accepted the invitation to become Ryder Cup Vice Captains.  They needed no persuading.
“The three bring a wealth of experience and knowledge and their input will be invaluable to Europe's cause. I could not have asked for anybody better to be standing shoulder to shoulder with me in the bid to bring The Ryder Cup home.
“I have known and been close to Thomas for many years and I know just how passionate he is about team golf's greatest competition. He has had a major influence already both on and off the course at previous Ryder Cups and I know that will continue at Hazeltine.
“Padraig's outstanding career has included three major championship successes and his presence in the team room will bring a big confidence factor to Europe's 12 representatives.
“Paul is a highly respected major championship winner and knows exactly what it will take to reach our intended destination. His calm, considered approach and strength of character will be of immense value.”
Bjørn said: “The Ryder Cup has provided so many of the highlights in my career, both from the three Ryder Cups I’ve played in, and from the three where I assisted Bernhard, Colin and José Maria as a Vice Captain.  It is an honour to be a member of the European Ryder Cup team campaign in any capacity and I very much look forward to playing a part in Darren’s team at Hazeltine.”

Harrington said: “I am delighted that Darren has given me this opportunity. I found it really interesting and rewarding helping out Paul and the team at Gleneagles in 2014 and seeing The Ryder Cup from such a different angle. I think I learned a lot from the experience and also from the matches I’ve played in, so I hope I will be able to be of some help to Darren and the players.”

Lawrie said: “I am delighted to be chosen by Darren as a Vice Captain, and it's going to be a great honour to take on this role on US soil at Hazeltine.
"Having played in two Ryder Cups, both in America, I would hope to draw on those experiences and offer some advice and guidance to the European Team, and continue the momentum to retain The Ryder Cup
"Darren will be a fantastic leader, and it's going to be a privilege to be part of his back room team, alongside Thomas and Padraig.”
The remaining two Vice Captains, who will complete Captain Clarke’s backroom team, will be named at a later date.

Mixed fortunes for Murrayfield pair in Wales

Murrayfield members Alastair Thurlow and Andrew Ni, the only Scots in a big field for the Welsh Youths Open championship at Whitchurch Golf Club, Cardiff, shot 71 and 79 respectively in the first round.
Thurlow matched the par despite a double bogey at the first and a triple bogey 7 at the 18th. He also bogeyed the fourth. The Edinburgh youngster compensated with birdies at the third, eighth, ninth, 10th, 12th and 13th to be tied 14th at the end of the day, three shots behind four players sharing the lead on 68.
Ni had three double bogeys in halves of 38 and 41 for his 79 which left him in joint 103rd positon and needing a very good second-round score to be among the leading 45 and ties who will advance at the end of 36 holes to the final two rounds on Sunday.

Jordan McColl, top Scot in EuroPro Tour

event, wins £760 for T11 finish

NEWS RELEASE
From Nick Teale
Richard Edginton shot a final-round 69 to win the IFX International Championship by two shots on 11 under par 205 (66-70-69) at Burhill Golf Club for his first HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour title.

Edginton (Royal Wimbledon Golf Club) began the day two back but four birdies in his first eight holes saw him wrestle control from Greg Payne (Chobham Golf Club) on the New Course at Burhill. He turned home with a two-stroke lead but that was dashed when he bogeyed the 10th.

Some nervy putts followed on the back nine but Edginton’s cushion was extended when Payne bogeyed the 14th and the pre-tournament 200/1 shot held out for eight pars to sign for a tournament-winning 69 and 11 under par for his three rounds.

“It was a lot of hard work and a very stressful round,” said Edginton, who wins £10,000 as well as a brand new Motocaddy S1 trolley, Bushnell Tour X Range Finder, Bolle sunglasses and £500 to spend at HotelPlanner.com

“I didn’t play great today but it is amazing to get the win. It was a tough day, it was breezy and the greens were firm. It is really nice to come out on top.

“I had a couple of really good breaks with putts dropping and after the turn it was a case of hold on, I knew pars would probably be enough and they just about were.

“I could feel Greg breathing down my neck. I had a couple of scrambley finishes and the putter was getting a bit shaky but I managed to dribble one in from four foot on 17. The putting held out well.

“I was keeping an eye on the leaderboards over the last few holes. I knew there was no point doing anything stupid if pars would be enough, but if anything changed I could maybe play a bit more aggressively, but I didn’t need to.

“I will probably play the full schedule of EuroPro events this year and try and get another win for that top five. Just to get the win is an amazing feeling, and if this is all that happens for me this year it will definitely be enough.”

Highlights of the IFX International Championship will air on Sky Sports 4 at 8pm on Tuesday, June 7. The HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour continues in June with the GRENKE Championship at Cumberwell Park Golf Club, commencing on Wednesday, June 22.

Another look at Barry Hume's Welsh success

 - he lost two balls early in final round!

Barry Hume - King of the (Harlech) Castle in Wales

FROM THE WELSH GOLF UNION WEBSITE
Scotland’s Barry Hume bounced back from losing two balls early in his last round, the 34-year-old using his experience to claim the Welsh Open Stroke Play title at Royal St David’s in Harlech last weekend.
Sports scholarship company boss Hume has returned to top level amateur competitions, admitting that he might not have coped as well with a roller coaster of a round during his teenage years.
Fellow Scot Craig Howie from Peebles was second, while the top placed Welsh player was Conwy's Lee Jones in tied fifth with Wrexham’s Tom Williams tied 14th.
“Any time you pick up a national title is a big deal,” said Glasgow golfer Hume, from the Haggs Castle club.
“I picked up a few, along with European titles, in the past but it has been a while since I picked up something like this so it shows all the hard work is worth it and I can build on this going forward “It is certainly a great feeling, I kept everything on an even keel when I might not have done that when I was younger.
“I lost two balls on the 3rd and the 8th, but I was level par after eight holes despite that thanks to four birdies. Then I bogeyed the ninth and tenth to put me behind, however from that point on I did not make a mistake."
“To then play the last eight holes in two under was the sort of thing that did not always happen when I was younger, I try to use experience to my advantage."
“I do not think about the result, I am just trying to focus on the process and my pre-shot routine. It was certainly a roller coaster first ten holes but there were four birdies on there so there were two different ways to look at it – either positively or negatively.
“The course was in fantastic condition and that really helped with my putting. I played here in the British Boys a number of years ago and I was keen to come back, the greens were amazing which was a key part in my win.”
Golf Union of Wales championships manager David Wilson added, “Congratulations to Barry, he bounced back strongly to win by a couple of shots in the end on eight under.  “The Royal St David’s course earned praise from all the players, it was certainly a good test but a fair one that they thoroughly enjoyed.
“The welcome from the club for many of Europe’s top amateur players was tremendous, while the course was shown in the best light. Given the mixed weather over the last few weeks, the course was in magnificent condition and testament to the hard work put in by the club.”

after first round at Colonial

Jordan Spieth is in the hunt.
Those are dangerous words to hear for the rest of the field, but it’s the truth after the World No. 2 opened the Dean & DeLuca Invitational with a 3-under 67. The score put Spieth within three of the lead.
The top of the leaderboard belongs to Bryce Molder, who went out in nine pars but birdied six of his final nine to open in 6-under 64. Scoring came for others, though, on Day One, as Patrick Reed, Webb Simpson and Anirban Lahiri all posted 5 under. Jason Dufner and Ryan Palmer came in at 4 under.
Adam Hadwin shot 2-under 68 to finish the day at T-18.
Spieth finished T-2 at Colonial last year and has top-15 finishes at the event in each of his three appearances here.

Rocco Mediate shoots 62 to lead Senior PGA; John Daly makes quintuple bogey on way to 75

BENTON HARBOR, Michigan — Entering the first round of the 77th United States Senior PGA Championship on Thursday at Harbor Shores, most of the attention had been focused on three players.
Bernhard Langer came to southwest Michigan needing only the Senior PGA to become the first to complete a career senior Grand Slam; Colin Montgomerie was shooting to be just the ninth player since 1900 at any level of professional golf to win the same major three times in a row; and there was newly turned senior John Daly, the week’s biggest draw.
Far down the list of likely headliners was Rocco Mediate, whose 2016 playing resume was largely mediocre. He had no top-20s in any individual event and was 0-for-22 trying to break 70.
But on Thursday, Mediate was nothing short of brilliant. He birdied four of his first five holes, later added an eagle as he went 8 under through 11 holes, and finished with a 9-under 62 that tied the 18-hole scoring record in the Senior PGA and at Harbor Shores. Mediate, however, holds just a one-stroke lead over Gene Sauers.
Mike Goodes made five birdies in a run of six holes starting at the fifth to shoot 64 and trail by two, and sharing fourth place at 6-under-65 were Kenny Perry, Kirk Triplett and John Dalcorobbo of Carmel, Ind., the best of four club professionals in the top 10.
“I don’t know the last time I shot in the 60s,” said Mediate. “It was one of those days. I just drove it really well. I hit a lot of solid irons … so I had a lot of short putts for birdie. I didn’t really make a long one.”
Mediate was as surprised as anyone by a round in which he missed one fairway, one-putted 12 times, chipped in for eagle and got up and down all five times he missed a green.
“I know it’s been coming,” he said, “but like this was kind of insane. But even if I would have shot 71 or 72 hitting it as good as I hit it today, as solid as I hit it today, I’m good with that because that’s what I need to have any type of confidence. You have to earn the confidence, though.”
One great round won’t change Mediate’s expectations for what might follow in the Senior PGA’s third visit to Harbor Shores.
“You just know that if you stay with it and keep working, regardless of what happens the next three days, I know the ball’s off the middle of the clubface again and it should stay there. There’s no reason for it to change. And if I don’t trust it, it’s going to go crooked. Simple as that. It’s just a matter of trust.”
Sauers played the second nine in 5-under30, a score boosted by birdie chip-ins at both par 5s.
“That was fun,” said Sauers, who has his two best finishes of the year, T-12, in each of his last two starts.
“It boosts your confidence up a little bit,” Sauers said. “I’ve hit the ball really solid in the last month. Let’s hope it keeps continuing.”
His good run coincides with a change to a cross-handed putting grip he made three weeks ago.
“That’s a night-and-day difference,” he said. “I wish I would have done it 10 years ago. I’ve always said, ‘If I could just putt like these guys out here, I’ll be in contention every week.’ So maybe I’m starting something.”
Perry, who shot 62 in the final round of the 2012 Senior PGA at Harbor Shores, had just one bogey on a card in which he had five birdies and an eagle in his first 12 holes.
“I think there’s going to be a lot of good scores out there,” said Perry. “It’s just a good start.”
Dalcorobbo won last year’s PGA Senior Professional Championship, where the top 35 finishers earn berths in the next Senior PGA. He finished Thursday’s round with a flourish, making birdies at Nos. 13, 14 and 16, then holing a 9-iron from 147 yards for an eagle 2 at the 18th.
“I hit a tremendous shot on 18 and a lot of that is luck,” said Dalcorobbo, an assistant professional at Brickyard Crossing Golf Course in Speedway, Ind., “but I hit some good shots during the day and I’m really happy about that.
“(At 18) with the wind direction and the lie, I thought that 9-iron was the play. I was just happy it was going to get on that level where the pin was so I can maybe find a way to two-putt it and just not lose any shots. And then it goes in. So, nice end to a good start for the first day of the tournament.”
Daly, who turned 50 less than a month ago, had six birdies, but his round of 4-over 75 was marred at the par-4 16th, where he hit two balls into a water hazard on his way to making 9. Daly had three penalty strokes in all, including one at the par-5 ninth, his last hole of the day.
Colin Montgomerie, Paul Broadhurst and Barry Lane are all on the 67 mark and tied 10th. Ian Woosnam had a 70
